The first thing that catches your eye is the interesting lens design. When changing the range of focal lengths, the lens does not move anything. The lens looks solid on the camera.

The design is austere, the whole body is made in black with white markings. Only the minimum aperture value and the aperture lock button are orange.

Sony has a similar lens - Minolta 70-210 / 4, which is called "beer can" due to the similarity of the lens and aluminum can. Since the Nikon 70-210mm f / 4 AF has the same specifications, it is sometimes also called "beer can".

Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4

Nikon 70-210mm f / 4 AF is valued as a great portrait lens. Indeed, after a series of shots, you begin to appreciate his unique design and amazing picture. And Nikon 70-210mm f / 4 AF is very compact (as for a telephoto) and not at all heavy. My Nikon 70-300mm 4.5-5.6 much more bulky and slow due to the fact that his trunk is lengthening. For lovers of faster aperture optics Note: Nikon 70-210mm f / 4 AF is darker Nikon 80-200 just 1 stop (2 times).

Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4

Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4

The main points you need to know about the Nikon 70-210mm f / 4 AF lens and their effect on the resulting image.

  1. The lens from the film cameras, and this gives the ability to use it on full-frame cameras Nikon Most likely, if you are configured to use or already use this lens, then when switching to a full frame by type Nikon D800, D3s etc., the lens can prove itself in all its glory.
  2. When used on Nikon DX APS-C cameras, the viewing angle will be narrower. The viewing angle will be equivalent to the viewing angle of a focal length lens 105-315mm when used on film cameras and / or in full frame. On my Nikon D90 и Nikon D200 the lens turns into a decent telephoto, and a rather large aperture allows you to do just great portraits.
  3. At the lens general aperture. This is indicated in the lens name as F / 4. This means that no matter how cool the zoom is from 70 to 210mm, and aperture will be permanent. This makes the lens look like its colleagues from the professional lineup. The most important thing is that already with F / 4.0 the lens is completely 'working' in terms of creating sharp photos.
  4. At the lens internal zoom. Internal zoom. When zooming, the lens does not extend its trunk - this is also an important professional feature of the lens. The zoom at the lens is exactly three times. There is a popular belief in what people do good zoom with a magnification of more than three - impossible due to physical factors.
  5. When focusing, the front element both moves and moves forward. Leaves somewhere by 3cm. This is inconvenient for manual focusing and for the use of some filters (especially polarizing and gradient). With manual focusing, the focus ring rotates 180 degrees, this can be easily checked by a small groove in the ribbed ring of the focus. Auto Focus Slow.
  6. The lens has a wonderful focus distance scale.
  7. The lens has aperture control ring, it is necessary for old film cameras and a useful thing when used, for example, with other systems. If you need the usual automatic iris control, then rotate the ring to F32where it clicks itself. The diaphragm \ diaphragm control is made in the form of a button, and not a moving slider.
  8. The lens has a standard 62mm filter. I advise you to immediately screw on it protective filter.
  9. The lens has an aperture with 7 blades. The diaphragm petals are not rounded, and the diaphragm hole creates nuts in the blur zone.
  10. True to the lens no depth of field indicatorsbut there is a focus correction in the infrared for 70 and 210mm.
  11. Nikon 70-210mm f / 4 AF very well shot, without backlash. With its 760g of weight, it is very convenient to consider my cameras Nikon D200, D700but on Nikon D80 it is no longer so convenient to control the lens, since it takes the bulk of the camera-lens bundle onto itself.
  12. This is one of the few lenses with zoom and focus. the rear lens group does not move... This will prevent the camera from sucking in dust, and in general - just a nice little thing.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras without a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will not focus automatically:

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

Thoughts on the Nikon 70-210 mm f 4 AF:

The lens has a very small minimum focusing distance, you can take pictures of a completely normal macro with 210 mm 1: 4 magnification. The lens is not of the D type, because the camera will not know about the focusing distance to the object, maybe it will not be convenient for someone to work with the flash with this lens, but I did not personally feel the serious difference between D and none D. Lens focusing slow. Yes, the Nikon 70-210mm f / 4 AF has really slow focusing, the camera buzzes and twists the focuser for a very long time with its motor. When focusing, a rather strong and unpleasant sound is produced.

Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4

Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4

About image quality:

The lens is almost completely devoid of distortion. The lens is sharp enough already with a full f / 4.0 aperture. Significant open diaphragm chromatic aberration, including strong friringo. The color reproduction is excellent, although they say that due to the old NIC (Nikon Integrated Coating) enlightenment, the lens can distort colors a little.

Sample photos on Nikon 70-210 mm f 4 AF

More examples of photos on this lens can be seen with me here, here, here, here и here. My wedding (the one where I was the groom, not wedding photographer) was shot on Nikon D610 + Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4.

After about 1986 years passed from 2012 to 26, Nikon came to its senses and released Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm 1: 4G ED SWM VR IF Nano Crystal Coat. But this is not the original 70-210 / 4, but still 70-200 / 4.

The only weakness of the lens is poor coping with backlight - the lens starts to catch hares and lose contrast. Perhaps a hood would help with this ailment. Personally, I was pleasantly surprised that a lens even at 30 meters can separate the background from the subject in the field of focus. Vignetting on crop is minimal, but at 210mm 4.0 it is still slightly noticeable. The bokeh of the lens is excellent, I'll even write “amazing”.

Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4 is a great telephoto lens with interesting characteristics. One of the few lenses that you can safely recommend as a portrait zoom lens. It has an excellent drawing, small dimensions and low price. If you are in the throes of choosing a zoom portrait, take Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4 you won’t be mistaken, just remember that autofocus will only be on older Nikon cameras.

  • Demon

Hmm, that is, on the D3100 there are no reports with him at all? Still, a portrait is a good thing, but some scenes would also be nice to catch ...

    • Pokemon

      Reportage?
In human terms, until you change the camera to any one with a screwdriver.

    • Sergei

Buy at least the D90, make your life easier.

      • Alexander

Well, or at least the D50, it’s quite a credible ph, although ancient, and it’s worth a penny

  • anonym

This lens is an autofocus version of the manual lens E series 70-210 / 4 Ais, by the way, a beautiful lens. Starting from a certain moment, Nikon began to transform his own economy class lenses into semi-professional lenses, their quality was so high. That manual 70-210 / 4 Ais can now be bought for 70-80 dollars.

  • Alexander Malyaev

I held 85 f / 1.8G and 70-210 f / 4 on the full frame, but my financial situation forced me to make a choice. In most cases, a width of 18-35 f / 3.5-4.5G and 50 f / 1.4G is enough for me now, I rarely use longer. Well, in general, I took a tripod and went into the forest, head-on compare 85 and 70-210 on the same spring frames, then snapped close-up portraits from them (for the other 50 it will do), twisted the footage on a PC, and sold 85 Not because 85 is bad, but because the results convinced me that 70-210 is a nice picture for my tasks for the eyes, and I stopped chasing pixel-by-pixel sharpness long ago.

    • Alexander Malyaev

Yes, and I’ll clarify: 70-210 soap only in the corners and edges, this is noticeable in the distant plans, at medium and near distances it is generally not significant. And the rest is very sharp glass, the difference from 85 in the depth of field zone with the D600 matrix has to be searched with a magnifying glass.

  • anonym

How relevant is this lens now?
To take a portrait. thanks for the answer

    • B. R. P.

Here you can’t definitely say. Too many factors.

      • anonym

What confuses me is the fact that there is no stabilizer. Will it be possible to shoot portraits from hand?

        • Oleg

Used it on Nikon D7100. precisely as a portrait painter. I mainly used focal lengths from 100 to 160 mm, in this range my copy showed the best sharpness. At 210 open, there was no sharpness, only at close to 5.6. To avoid blur, I photographed in the “M” mode with a shutter speed no slower than 1/250. I liked the glass for its beautiful drawing.

        • B. R. P.

Choose the shutter speed correctly and the rest of the parameters should be free of grease.

  • Igor

I wanted to take for sports. I read that the chen is slow. It's a pity.

And at first I was glad that I found a cheap copy.

    I will look towards 80-200 or 70-200.

    • Oleg

It’s definitely not suitable for sports.

      • Victor

Strange, and how I managed to shoot sports with him.

  • Shardi.plck

Good day. Last week I bought an old D80 with a lens from this article 70-210 f4 for inexpensive. I am interested in the question about the hood, maybe there is some analogue from modern lenses that would be suitable for this from the review?

    • Michael

If you cannot find it, you can stick the threaded

    • Osh

There are a lot of metal threaded blends on the M42 from different manufacturers. I bought a Marumi lens hood for this lens.

    • Osh

      * Of course, on a 62 mm thread, not M42 =)

    • Nicholas

I have the same 70-210 / 4. Blen's screw from China is good, but there is no cover for it ..

    • Andrey

Look towards the rubber blends on the thread. I took on 80-400mm, quite effectively.

  • Konstantin

Nikon HN-24 for aliexpress is about 300 rubles, but it is the least useful. Elongated conventional hood for m62 - about 200 rubles. (I use it in the backlight, but I have a cropped crop. It can vignette on FF)
There is another version of the old Soviet rubber hood with a metal screw ring from the f / a Kiev. It is the size of a native Nikon HN-24, but the plus is resilient, it’s not scary to hurt someone in the crowd. I use it more often.

  • Koba

I bought this lens today by accident, that is, I looked closely, but in China it cost about dollars in excellent condition, and today in Georgia I accidentally bought it for 130 dollars with an original metal hood and a professional UV filter. condition - close to new. After one day of testing on my Nikon D3s, I can say that there are no back or front focuses, no chromatitis, afthofocus is quite working, I would say that it is fast, it rarely misses, probably it will be slower on younger cameras. Micro contrast is clearly above average, noticeably higher than that of my Nikon 24-85 / 3.5-4.5G (not VR!), The lens is made very well, I even wonder how it has been preserved without a single scratch. The picture is more uniform and at times pleasant than from my 24-85. The bokeh is great, but for the money it is simply gorgeous. Someday I'll make an accurate technical comparison of my three lenses - this one, the 24-85 / 3.5-4.5G and the Tokina 100 / 2.8 Macro. At aperture 5.6, all minor optical imperfections disappear, although aperture 4 is also fully operational.

  • coroner

I found out that on a sunny day, with a screwed-on metal hood from Alibaba, there are indecently many mistakes - almost half. Without a hood, there is no such problem.
I suspect that there is an inertia of the blend itself ..

    • Vitaly N

Unlikely. The mass of the moving part is much larger than the hood. Most likely this is due to reflections inside the hood. Insert the matte black paper tube into the hood and check.

      • coroner

        Laziness:(

        • anonym

I have an original hood, HN-24, inside it has a matte blackening, not very black, by the way, but I did not compare autofocus with it and without it. I will definitely try and unsubscribe ...

    • Koba

Yesterday I tested my specimen with a hood and without, I did not find any noticeable difference, according to subjective feelings on a sunny day, like without a hood, the focus smeared a little more often. I have an original matte blackened blend.

  • Koba

I would like to ask the people - is this lens parfocal or nat? the fact is that I personally checked it many times and never gets out of focus when zooming. I did not find confirmation of this in the Internet. Here it is not in the review either. It is known that there are no real parfocal zooms for photography, there are only parfocal zooms for cinema and video, but nevertheless, there are more or less parfocal zooms, for example, Nikon 80-200 / 4 AIS. There is also confirmed information about the following lenses:

    EF 16-35mm f / 2.8L USM
    EF 17-40mm f / 4L USM
    EF-S 17-55 / 2.8 IS

As well as unconfirmed information about the following:

Please share your experience, if your copy is more or less parfocal (that is, within acceptable limits, when a slight shift practically does not affect the focus), then this is a big plus for this lens.

  • Alexey

Hello everyone. There are 50 1,8d; 85 1,8d, Jupiter 37a. I shoot mostly portraits. D750 camera. Do you think 70-210 f4 is suitable for my purposes or will it be superfluous? Itself is no longer able to figure it out.

    • Alexey

Already on the D750, buy 80-200 \ 2.8 III, instead, here it is suitable for portraits.

  • Alexander

Hello! Is it possible to fine-tune the nikkor 70-210 f4 AF on the Nikon d300

    • Arkady Shapoval

      yes, you can

  • Alexander

Thanks Arkady! Then I buy this lens.

    • Koba

Hello! I would like to give you advice based on my own experience. I own this lens and use it, it is great and gives great results (at least on the Nikon D750) and is inexpensive. But consider a few practical points - it does not have a constant F2.8 aperture, which is often very required for a fair amount of background blur, it does not have fast autofocus (although in real life it is sufficient in most cases, at least on Nikon D3s), on the same apertures Nikon 80-200 / 2.8 will give a better result, an even more pleasant picture, and autofocus at 80-200.2,8 (III) is really fast, and the latter is made as befits a top-end professional lens. 70-210 blurs the background beautifully and separates the subject from the background, but sometimes the level of blur is not enough. In short, I want to tell you that they are not interchangeable. I would also like to say that some observers on the Internet say that 70-210 is not suitable for long-range shots, for landscapes, I myself checked it in this regard, and it is absolutely suitable, even at F4 aperture, the only disadvantage is strong vignetting to F4. The advantage of the 70-210 is its very low distortion in all ranges (it is higher in the 80-200). Also keep in mind that there are no automatic correction profiles for it in graphic editors.

  • Yuriy

    “At the same apertures Nikon 80-200 / 2.8 will give the best result” - so Nikon 80-200 / 2.8 and three 70-210 1: 4.

    • B. R. P.

      “Yak three 70-210 1: 4” - then 3-ty moidfіkatsіya.

  • Alexander

Arkady Hello! I bought 70-210mm and turned out to be back focus. I made adjustments to fine-tune AF at 210mm set +18 and at 70mm + 7. And what should I do? The service is very far from me. It's not work if you change the adjustment settings every time on different focal points. Tell me what to do or leave as it is.

  • Yuriy

Friends, advise: for shooting portraits (outdoor and indoor) what to buy 70-210mm 1: 4 or 85 1.8D. I will use it on D80. I have read reviews here about the first and about the second three times - I can't decide. Who has tried both?

    • Peter Sh.

Tried, of course. We tried everything, and everyone decides for himself.
Personally, I like shooting portraits on fixes more. They have a much more gorgeous picture than any zoom. Again, in my immodest opinion.
But if I shoot people in the studio, I always use a telezoom of the type 70-200 2.8. The specifics are such, you always need to quickly and a lot.

  • Yuriy

Thanks for the answer. I thought so - you need to have both. I'll start with 85. Thanks again.

  • Sergei

who used this device on d200

    • Victor

Used / use on d200. What exactly interests?

  • koba

There is a lot of talk about lenses with the D prefix - that is, with the transfer of distance to the camera for more precise control of the flash light. I was a little afraid to use this lens with a flash because of this, but after over 1000 frames with flash, the results were essentially 100 percent, that is, there was not a single exposure miss out of more than 1000 frames. So I think the significance of this function is many times exaggerated. I also admit that maybe its value is really high when shooting with wide-angle lenses at close range, but definitely not with long lenses.

  • Nico

Hi, there was a problem with this lens, on my D90, the camera just does not see it. Aperture latched to 32, but still lights fEE

  • Yuri

More than a year has passed since the last comment, and I just now acquired this miracle. Bought, but not yet received. I’ll get it, try it, I will certainly state my impressions. All gorgeous photos!

  • Yuri

Oh, sorry, I confused nights and dawns, in the sense of dates…. )

  • Vladimir

Good day! Please tell me which lens has a better picture than Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm or NIKON AF-S 70-300mm f / 4.5-5.6E ED VR

    • Arkady Shapoval

Technically, the new E-version is better, aesthetically in some cases the old.

    • koba

I have 70-210 and use it often. He has a picture and aesthetic side is clearly better, especially when used for portraits, shooting a lot on it, my personal feelings are such that it perfectly separates the subject from everything else, the photos turn out on vit as they should be, I also tried 70 -300 vr, it is excellent, with fast focus, excellent stabilization, even at 300mm from usable, but you always get pictures like all in one, that is, rubbish, gibberish, and then it just deteriorates, and this old one is made like a stone, but his af is slow, sometimes refocused, this is his only drawback. and more - MDF for the old version is 1,1m, and for the new one is 1,5m! The old distortions have very few, can be neglected altogether, there is one feature - the vignette is open, but I often leave it that way, and at the same time when shooting you see the finished frame, if you don't like it, close the aperture to 4,8, the optical parameters will improve, and the bokeh will still remain at the level. The old one is not yet a vacuum cleaner.

Hello Arkady! Recently acquired Zoom-Nikkor-C 80-200 / 4.5. I liked the picture very much, but have not yet managed to take a lot of it. And now I accidentally found such an AF 70-210 / 4, it should come in a week. I wonder what can be said about the difference in picture and image quality. Thank you in advance!

I was looking for televik for a long time. Anti-missile defense glasses disappeared immediately because of their cosmic prices. Naturally I looked at joyfulness as always. Not the first time this site helps me out during a painful choice. I looked for it and, lo and behold, I came across this glass. I ordered it on ebee for one hundred euros. I came as a new one. I'll tell you that if it were with a stub, it would be an ideal glass, but without a stub, this is a beautiful glass that instantly became standard on my d7000. Earlier, the device was picky with its back-front, but then everything came together. I attach a photo.
