The first thing that catches your eye is the interesting lens design. When changing the range of focal lengths, the lens does not move anything. The lens looks solid on the camera.

The design is austere, the whole body is made in black with white markings. Only the minimum aperture value and the aperture lock button are orange.

Sony has a similar lens - Minolta 70-210 / 4, which is called "beer can" due to the similarity of the lens and aluminum can. Since the Nikon 70-210mm f / 4 AF has the same specifications, it is sometimes also called "beer can".

Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4

Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4

Nikon 70-210mm f / 4 AF is valued as a great portrait lens. Indeed, after a series of shots, you begin to appreciate his unique design and amazing picture. And Nikon 70-210mm f / 4 AF is very compact (as for a telephoto) and not at all heavy. My Nikon 70-300mm 4.5-5.6 much more bulky and slow due to the fact that his trunk is lengthening. For lovers of faster aperture optics Note: Nikon 70-210mm f / 4 AF is darker Nikon 80-200 just 1 stop (2 times).

Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4

Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4

The main points you need to know about the Nikon 70-210mm f / 4 AF lens and their effect on the resulting image.

  1. The lens from the film cameras, and this gives the ability to use it on full-frame cameras Nikon Most likely, if you are configured to use or already use this lens, then when switching to a full frame by type Nikon D800, D3s etc., the lens can prove itself in all its glory.
  2. When used on Nikon DX APS-C cameras, the viewing angle will be narrower. The viewing angle will be equivalent to the viewing angle of a focal length lens 105-315mm when used on film cameras and / or in full frame. On my Nikon D90 и Nikon D200 the lens turns into a decent telephoto, and a rather large aperture allows you to do just great portraits.
  3. At the lens general aperture. This is indicated in the lens name as F / 4. This means that no matter how cool the zoom is from 70 to 210mm, and aperture will be permanent. This makes the lens look like its colleagues from the professional lineup. The most important thing is that already with F / 4.0 the lens is completely 'working' in terms of creating sharp photos.
  4. At the lens internal zoom. Internal zoom. When zooming, the lens does not extend its trunk - this is also an important professional feature of the lens. The zoom at the lens is exactly three times. There is a popular belief in what people do good zoom with a magnification of more than three - impossible due to physical factors.
  5. When focusing, the front element both moves and moves forward. Leaves somewhere by 3cm. This is inconvenient for manual focusing and for the use of some filters (especially polarizing and gradient). With manual focusing, the focus ring rotates 180 degrees, this can be easily checked by a small groove in the ribbed ring of the focus. Auto Focus Slow.
  6. The lens has a wonderful focus distance scale.
  7. The lens has aperture control ring, it is necessary for old film cameras and a useful thing when used, for example, with other systems. If you need the usual automatic iris control, then rotate the ring to F32where it clicks itself. The diaphragm \ diaphragm control is made in the form of a button, and not a moving slider.
  8. The lens has a standard 62mm filter. I advise you to immediately screw on it protective filter.
  9. The lens has an aperture with 7 blades. The diaphragm petals are not rounded, and the diaphragm hole creates nuts in the blur zone.
  10. True to the lens no depth of field indicatorsbut there is a focus correction in the infrared for 70 and 210mm.
  11. Nikon 70-210mm f / 4 AF very well shot, without backlash. With its 760g of weight, it is very convenient to consider my cameras Nikon D200, D700but on Nikon D80 it is no longer so convenient to control the lens, since it takes the bulk of the camera-lens bundle onto itself.
  12. This is one of the few lenses with zoom and focus. the rear lens group does not move... This will prevent the camera from sucking in dust, and in general - just a nice little thing.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras without a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will not focus automatically:

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

Thoughts on the Nikon 70-210 mm f 4 AF:

The lens has a very small minimum focusing distance, you can take pictures of a completely normal macro with 210 mm 1: 4 magnification. The lens is not of the D type, because the camera will not know about the focusing distance to the object, maybe it will not be convenient for someone to work with the flash with this lens, but I did not personally feel the serious difference between D and none D. Lens focusing slow. Yes, the Nikon 70-210mm f / 4 AF has really slow focusing, the camera buzzes and twists the focuser for a very long time with its motor. When focusing, a rather strong and unpleasant sound is produced.

Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4

Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4

About image quality:

The lens is almost completely devoid of distortion. The lens is sharp enough already with a full f / 4.0 aperture. Significant open diaphragm chromatic aberration, including strong friringo. The color reproduction is excellent, although they say that due to the old NIC (Nikon Integrated Coating) enlightenment, the lens can distort colors a little.

Sample photos on Nikon 70-210 mm f 4 AF

More examples of photos on this lens can be seen with me here, here, here, here и here. My wedding (the one where I was the groom, not wedding photographer) was shot on Nikon D610 + Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1: 4.

After about 1986 years passed from 2012 to 26, Nikon came to its senses and released Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm 1: 4G ED SWM VR IF Nano Crystal Coat. But this is not the original 70-210 / 4, but still 70-200 / 4.

The only weakness of the lens is poor coping with backlight - the lens starts to catch hares and lose contrast. Perhaps a hood would help with this ailment. Personally, I was pleasantly surprised that a lens even at 30 meters can separate the background from the subject in the field of focus. Vignetting on crop is minimal, but at 210mm 4.0 it is still slightly noticeable. The bokeh of the lens is excellent, I'll even write “amazing”.

  • Arkady, thanks for your constructive reviews!
    About this lens.
The focusing speed (for my copy) is not slow at all. Let's just say not too fast. I haven't had a chance to shoot sports yet, but the city holiday, it worked for me with a bang. It looks like it depends on the state of a particular instance (and he is an "old man"), storage conditions, etc.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I had 2 such lenses. Both have a slow speed. What do I use them on 4 different cameras, d80, d90, d200, d700. For example, the new 70-300 bp focuses just instantly compared to this 70-210.

      • Sashko

Recently, you can twist / touch / take a picture of a 70-210 F4, maybe through those copies you can get to ideal, but the speed of focusing on the D300 would be great, but not the girly itself ... but in less time ... In general, it quietly got to my hands, leaving the buv 35-135 F3,5-4,5, it was an estimate of the normal operating environment, which was noisy until cold.

      • Alexander Belozerov

Arkady hello. How will this lens work if it is in good condition on the d750? It is necessary for shooting portraits on FR from 105 mm, sometimes for landscape photography, where 24-70 are missing. Bribes the price, weight and size of this glass. Or is it worth saving up for a new 70-200 f4? Your opinion? Thank you in advance for your advice.

      • Alexander Belozerov

Hello Arkady. Let me ask you a question about 70-210 f4 ...
Is it possible for them to film not only a walk, but also a church wedding (close-ups)? Will f4 be enough for this without flash? Without raising the ISO too much ...
Thank you in advance for your reply!

  • Konstantin

Can Nikon 70-210 f4 be considered as a Makro?

    • Arkady Shapoval

No. To The Real Macro He Fails.

      • Alexander Belozerov

Arkady hi. Strongly inferior to optical 70-210 f4 80-200 2.8?
Testing 80-200 2.8 lll versions, the picture is good, but it seemed too heavy to me ...
Taking 70-210 f4 with a weight of 700 gr. How much am I losing in the quality of the picture?
I would be very grateful for the advice.
I shoot mostly with fixes (50,85,105) and 24-70 zoom with the D750 carcass ...

  • Idlinnes

Good night Arkady. what do you say by Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210 mm f / 4-5.6? How bad is it compared to Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210 mm f / 4?

    price 140ue ..

    • Arkady Shapoval

I didn’t hold it in my hands, but my friends say that it’s a good lens.

  • Idlinnes

    thank you) .. reasonable price?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Yes, it is quite.

  • Vladimir

    Arkady hello.
What can you tell about such a Vivitar 70-210mm lens?

  • Dennis

I have the opportunity to purchase Nikon 70-210 mm f 4 AF or Nikon AF Nikkor 75-300 mm 1: 4.5 - 5.6 well, also sigma af 100-400, advise what to choose. And then I myself am at a loss.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I recommend 70-210 4.0

    • FLASHproject

Tez vibra іz them even more 70-210 Ф4-5,6. As a result, adding 75-300. It’s just a miracle. I’m not sorry for the vibration.

  • Anatoly

Arkady, tell me his plastic mount like the nikkor 80-200 4.5? And he surpasses 80-200 4.5 only in aperture and autofocus?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Mount (mount to the camera) metal.

    • Sergei

Well, if you take into account the mass of 710 grams, it will be clear that if plastic is present here, it is very limited. Thanks to this, zooming is very quiet and smooth, with video this is an essential fact.

  • Vyacheslav

Arkady Good afternoon! Please advise which telephoto you can use for serial shooting on the topic of skiing at an athlete approaching speed of 40-100km \ h. I have a Nikon D300
When choosing a-price quality of course.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Nikon 80-200 2.8 AF-D is not bad

  • Vyacheslav

Honestly did not expect a quick response!
    Nikon Nikkor AF 80-200 mm F / 2.8 D ED Zoom
Did you hint at this model?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I didn’t hint, I wrote about him

      • Vyacheslav

At a decent price, I think that with the focusing speed of this lens, everything will be okay7

        • Arkady Shapoval

Focusing speed is not the fastest.

          • Vyacheslav

It remains to rely on single shots in manual mode7 Or are there televisions in your opinion that will suit sport.photo7

  • Igor

which is better to buy Nikkor 70-210 F4 or Nikkor 70-210 f4-5.6? the difference in price is 100 cu

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Better first.

  • Igor

And if it is possible by what criteria will the first be better? Is it worth it to overpay?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Constant aperture over the entire range, aperture 2 times more than 210mm.

  • vinnitsa2

beautiful glass. I took b \ y practically without looking because I understood that there was no choice anymore. adjusted the front to D300 and the hit leveled off with a bang. Very amazing plastic. but you need to have "firm" hands. There was a stub, the prices were not for him.

  • Alexey

You write: "For fans of faster optics, a note: Nikon 70-210mm f / 4 AF is only 80 stops darker than Nikon 200-2.8 1.2, but much cheaper."

You probably wanted to write 1 stop.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Arkady, good time of day. I want to buy this lens for Nikon d3200. I just bought a camera, as far as I understand, there is no autofocus on this model. How hard it is to focus manually, (for a full teapot).

    • Arkady Shapoval

If you have a whale lens, turn off the auto focus, focus manually, you will realize how difficult it is. Live View is a little easier than using an optical viewfinder.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Please tell me what budget telephoto lens do you recommend on the d3200 !?

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

thanks! And not so budget! In the aisles of 300-500 $

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Arkady, thank you very much! 55-300 is what you need !!!

  • gene

I would buy this object in normal condition ...

  • Ivan

This is my favorite "old man" for portraits. The review is very correct, but you can add some details based on personal experience, so to speak.
“Interesting lens design”, as the author correctly notes,
indeed, it helps to avoid the "vacuum cleaner effect" inherent in other lenses with powerful retractable parts. This is very nice, especially when you use optics on old cameras, which do not have a “dust shaker” (and I love ancient cameras, I bought a lens for an old D1X).
The author is right, when shooting in backlight, a hood is a must! Forgetting the hood at home, I often had to cover the lens with my hands from above from the sun)) But even in this case, the drawing remains very pleasant. Below are the weak points of the lens for those who dare to buy this extremely cute “veteran”.
Since the lens has a “screwdriver”, and the focusing is slow (and noisy, I will not deny it), it does not drain the batteries weakly - I compared it with other, more modern and fast “screwdriver” lenses, alas, the old man is gluttonous. I think this should be remembered when you go out into the countryside and there is no way to take a spare battery.
The "bugs" inherent in this lens are also noted, they must be taken into account when buying: some lenses are "smeared" on the long end, they say that this is some kind of "troubles" - either from old age, or because of former breakdowns.
Therefore, it is better to immediately check the optics at the limit values, so as not to run into a possible nuisance.
Manual focusing is somewhat inconvenient, but this is just my opinion, since I'm used to the old optics when I don’t have to reach for the front lenses of the lens.
Despite the “violet” hue, or perhaps due to some inherent chromatic aberration, this lens produces very pretty colored portraits and landscapes.
The lens is contrasting with the same “old” Nikon contrast.
Apparently, he is loved in Russia, Ukraine and beyond the distant seas - I often met reviews in English, these were very sympathetic reviews. Probably because the lens today is relatively cheap at auctions, but it gives a noble "expensive" drawing. Yes, when they just started producing it, it cost quite solid money at that time)) But now the same prices seem ridiculous)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thank you for the nice comment with selection tips.

  • Sergei

good evening, tell me if there is a version with a stabilizer? and which one do you recommend from the choice of this or tamron 28-70 f2.8

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, there is a similar Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm 1: 4G N ED VR. Tamron 28-70 f2.8 and 70-210 are completely different lenses.

  • Jury

I got 70-210 / 4-5.6 a week ago, the portraits are very beautiful and the sharpness turns into the background, and indeed the picture is beautiful. Does it make sense to buy a nikon 85 / 1.8D I tried in the store, but the blur is strong but the overall picture is not the same as at 70-210 (though they were taking pictures on a snowy street)?

    • Arkady Shapoval

You can get by and 70-210, at 210 \ 4 can wonderfully draw portraits.

  • Jury

Arkady, thank you very much for such content, I read for a week, maybe I couldn’t resist today, I asked a question and answered right away.
    Thanks again,

  • Jury

To the above, the picture 70-210 is somewhat similar in nature to something like 35-70 / 2.8, I think to buy, though I have found it for the 300ue-inadequate all the same b / y.

  • Jury

Today I filmed Dr. at 70-21- and 85 / 1.8 indoors, I can say that I liked voto from 70-210 more and this is not my opinion ...

  • Vyacheslav

They offer this lens for 10.000 rubles - an adequate price or is it worth bargaining and throwing it off?

    • Vlad

Will the d7000 camera have auto focus if you can talk
