Tamron Aspherical LD XR DI II SP AF 17-50mm 1: 2.8 [IF] A16, Model A16 N II

Please note that the Tamron A16 lens was also available for other systems:

  • Canon - Model A16E (good review here)
  • Pentax - Model A16P
  • Sony / Minolta - Model A16S
  • Nikon - Model A16N or A16N II

In total, the line of such Tamron lenses for Nikon cameras consists of four models:

  1. Tamron Aspherical LD XR DI II SP AF 17-50mm 1: 2.8 [IF] - Model A16N, February 2006 (country of origin - Japan or Vietnam)
  2. Promaster DIGITAL XR EDO AF Ashperical LD [IF] 17-50mm 1: 2.8, which is a model of the Tamron Model A16 N under the Promaster brand.
  3. Tamron Aspherical LD XR DI II SP AF 17-50mm 1: 2.8 [IF] - Model A16NIIMarch 2008, the model is shown in this review.
  4. Tamron Di II SP 17-50mm F / 2.8 VC - Model B005NII, September 2009, review is located here.

Difference between Tamron A16 N II and Tamron A16 N

  • Tamron A16 N Model Older
  • The Tamron A16 N does not have a built-in focus motor and is similar to the 'AF' lens for Nikon cameras. The Tamron A16 N II has a built-in focus motor and is the counterpart to the 'AF-S' lens for Nikon cameras. The older Tamron A16 N model will not automatically focus on Nikon cameras without a built-in focus motor, an accurate and complete list of cameras without a focus motor can be viewed here... Be careful, both models are labeled 'Tamron AF', but this abbreviation does not refer to Nikon's designations and can be confusing.
  • The Tamron A16 N II has an AF / MF focus mode switch. The older version lacks such a switch.
  • The Tamron A16 N has a screwdriver slot on the bayonet side, which connects the camera focusing motor to the lens focusing mechanism. The Tamron A16 N II lacks this slot.
  • Tamron A16 N has 5 microprocessor contacts, Tamron A16 N II has 8 microprocessor contacts (interesting information on microprocessor contacts here).
  • Lenses come in different boxes. The Tamron A16 N II version has a clear indication of its model, it says 'Model: A16 N II, Built-In Motor for Nikon D'.

Please note that the Tamron A16 N II and Tamron A16 N models have the same name spelling on their case and only the generic 'A16' model is indicated throughout. Be careful when shopping. The easiest way to distinguish lenses from each other is the number of microprocessor contacts. Also, for Tamron A16 N II version, 'A16N II' is indicated on the box.

In short

Tamron Aspherical LD XR DI II SP AF 17-50mm 1: 2.8 [IF] A16 (abbreviated as Tamron A16 N II) is high-speed universal zoom lens for Nikon DX cameras. Interesting big maximum constant aperture over the entire range of focal lengths and low price. The native analog of this lens is Nikon AF-S Nikkor 17-55mm 1: 2.8G ED IF SWM DXwhich is about 3 times more expensive than the Tamron A16 N II.

What need to know about Tamron A16NII:

  1. The lens is used constant maximum relative aperture F / 2.8 over the entire range of focal lengths. Actually, this is one of its strengths. The difference in aperture between F / 2.8 and F / 5.6, which are used in simple whale lenses, is 4 times (2 steps).
  2. Price. The price of the lens is approximately 3 times lower for the native analogue from Nikon.
  3. Very convenient range of focal lengths. EGF lens for Nikon DX cameras will be 25,4-75 mm which is a very popular focal length range.
  4. Built-in focus motor. The lens will work with any Nikon digital SLR camera.
  5. Included lens hood, which helps a little when shooting in side and backlight. The hood can be installed in the reverse position for transportation, in this position it’s a little inconvenient to zoom, and the focus ring is completely locked.
  6. The diameter of the front filter is 67 mm, which is a standard diameter and will allow you to easily find filters for the lens
  7. Strange lock buttonwhich locks the zoom at 17mm. Strange because the lens does not have the ability to independently lengthen its 'trunk' and this button is here just for the sake of a tick. Perhaps, over time, the button will come in handy.
  8. When focusing front element does not rotate or extend, you can use special light filters without any problems. This option in the lens name is called [IF] (Internal Focusing)

Of the disadvantages:

  1. To focus manually or adjust the focus, be sure to switch the focus mode switch to M on the lens.
  2. Auto focus is fast enough, but very noisy.
  3. Spread in quality. My copy was selected on the third attempt.
  4. Very poor build quality and lens design itself. At first, questions about assembly do not arise, but after prolonged use, the ring near the front lens begins to loosen and the focus ring loosens. Moreover, it seems that the focus ring is about to fall off. The image quality was not affected.
  5. When focusing manually, hard to focus due to the fact that the focus ring has a stroke of only 45 degrees. Even in Live View mode, getting into focus is very difficult.

Interesting moments:

  • The lens is marked SP (Super Performance - super performance), which hints at its professional lenses.
  • The lens has a large zoom ring.
  • The difference between 17 mm for the amron A16 N II) and 18 mm for the kit lens class 18-55 / 3.5-5.6 is very difficult to feel. So 17mm as a wide angle is not a good idea when choosing a lens.
  • I shoot with this lens almost always at three values, this is 2.8 - when needed aperture in poor lighting or a 50 mm portrait. F4.0 - when you need to slightly increase the depth of field without closing the aperture much and F9.0 when you need to get a sharp picture.
  • In the position of the zoom ring at 50 mm, the lens does not give a clear 50 mm, but gives a wider angle than a fifty-fifty (fixed lens with real 50 mm focal length). This complicates the photography of portraits by 50 mm a little.

Image quality

The lens has a good contrast, but in lateral light can catch glare and flare. Chromatic aberrations very noticeable at the edges and corners of the image, in the center of aberration are much better compensated. At 17 mm there is a tangible barrel-like distortion. Sharpness - here is a very interesting point, the copy from this review does not give normal sharpness on apertures from F / 2.8 to F / 5.6. Moreover, closing the aperture to F / 5.6, the sharpness changes very weakly. The lens is suffering very strong vignetted on the diaphragms aboutt f / 2.8 to f / 4.0. The lens does not distort color reproduction and has a simple 'bokeh'.

Tamron Aspherical LD XR DI II SP AF 17-50mm 1: 2.8 [IF] A16, model A16 N II is an unusual lens, it is difficult to choose a copy with normal sharpness. The lens assembly is far from professional. The lens attracts a large aperture over the entire range of focal lengths, nice color reproduction and low price.

Please tell me what is the diameter of this lens? I just need to buy a cover for it separately, and I just can’t figure out what diameter it has so that the cover fits in size.

    • B. R. P.

Nameplate at the beginning of the article:

"Front filter diameter - 67 mm"

Hello! I don’t know where to turn with the following question, I decided to write to you.
Today I tested Tamron 17-50 lenses 2 pcs, on the Nikon D5100 carcass, I was confused by the moment, there were no complaints about focusing through the peephole, but focusing in life view does not work. as I understand it, this is one of the first revisions equipped with a motor for focusing. What lens should I pay attention to so that autofocus works in all modes? Maybe there is a means of firmware technology in order to focus in LV earned?

    • Alexey

I would try the sigma lens (in your case), maybe it will work in live view, although I don’t understand why they should use these focal lengths if it’s not a telephoto and the depth of field is large, but you can focus on the center point and frame it with the button pressed halfway.

Tell me please, does assembly in Japan or Vietnam matter?

I have 2 of them - one for Nikon and one for Pentax. Both have been working for almost ten years, I have dragged them to many countries, anywhere, and they still look like new, nothing in them is loose or out of order, in terms of optical qualities it can be second only to Nikon 17-55 / 2.8, and then on open corners, on F4 and F5.6 it tears most of the fixes, I even compared it with my own super-powerful Tokina 100 / 2.8 Macro, it does not lag behind him. The examples given here once again prove all this. Autofocus is fast, but tenacious, profiles are available in all RAW converters, costs $ 100 in excellent condition, similar to the Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 OS, which some praise and is not worth it, especially in terms of sharpness, I was surprised when I compared it, and in one very detailed Russian-language review on the Internet, the author is also surprised at this. I copy a huge number of books with them (with Pentax K-01), and in the corners it is sharper than Nikon 40 / 2.8 Micro (!!!), of course at F5.6-8.0 apertures. I am writing this because at the moment this lens, coupled with an excellent Canon 40D camera, can be bought for $ 200, and if you add to this the excellent Keno 55-250 STM for $ 140, you will get an excellent set for a very minimal amount, but decide with such a set, you can have a huge number of photo tasks, or you can buy two cameras at once and work without rearranging the lenses. I almost forgot that the Tamron 17-50 / 2.8 is very sharp when shooting long-range shots, that is, it has excellent spatial sharpness, my Nikon 28-105D just sucks in this regard, as well as the Nikon AF 70-210 / 4 (but the latter is great for close-ups and portraits, for separating the subject from the background). During the entire operation of this Tamron with different cameras, its jamb with the Nikon D90 comes to mind, which was expressed in the fact that sometimes the camera lost it, and it was necessary to disconnect and reconnect it to the camera, after that it worked for 3-4 and then again I had to do this exercise. I recently recommended him to a friend who also photographed books on his Nikon D5100 + 18-55 VR, and after the very first shots he called me and said a big thank you, because now he can shoot small text on the corners of the page without fear, with which the old 18-55 VR essentially did not cope, which was especially evident when binarizing the captured files. A pleasant feature of the operation of this lens on the Pentax system is that it becomes stabilized, since the stabilizers are built into the cameras themselves. A similar Tamron 17-50 / 2.8 VC, that is, with a built-in stabilizer, optically much worse than this lens.

Each sandpiper praises its swamp. If only the samples were attached, if you defend the subject so zealously. It would be very interesting to see what kind of phenomenal sharpness this glass has. It is not very expensive in comparison with the original glass.

      • Anatoly

A normal fast lens, 2,8 is quite sharp, I actually don’t see a difference in sharpness between 2,8 and 5,6. In terms of sharpness, I tested it with the 18-55 kit from Pentax, and by the way, the sharp lens doesn’t blur at all, both showed good results.

  • Eugene

    Good day to Arkadiy
adding a version for Canon (for me Canon450d), eliminating the onset of shortcomings: adding focal view data in EXIF - permanently 32 mm from reality (changing all the way from 17 to 50 mm).

And from the value of the diaphragm, the camera reads вірно.

Daniy is not scary, ale - as soon as you vikoristovute zvnіshnіy sleeps, so we can focus on the reflector (as in my sleepy Sigma I will focus on the range of 18-24) `` In active sleep, it will turn out to display the value from the range and if it is not far away, it will gradually increase by 35 mm.

Leave it in hand can vibrate. Reversed with іnshim objects - such problems are dumb.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Good day. There are several options:
      1. Incompatibility with 450d
      2. B.u. Tamron version with a dangling train / comb for focal lengths (stuck at 32mm)

      • Eugen

The problem of the bullet was with a loop, which is more frequent than the other part, and what is more for the given focus. Having replaced now everything is OK.

        • RA4ADF

Yesterday I just bought the same lens in a used state. Sharpness suits. But the focal value does not transmit. Apparently, the problem is a dangling train.
          New purchased on Ali?

  • an256

Hello, I’m looking at this lens, it’s not expensive right now, I need it for hiking, at the moment I’m using Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical and Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical, but when hiking, using these two lenses is not always convenient for me, is this Tamron comparable in picture quality and color reproduction with these fixes? Will the replacement be equivalent?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Fixes are significantly better on open diaphragms. But on diaphragms around F / 8-F / 16, the difference will not always be so obvious.

  • an256

Arkady, and what would you recommend an inexpensive zoom for crop instead of these fixes.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Tamron 17-50 VC (version with stub), Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 OS (with stub), Sigma 18-35 / 1.8, Sigma 17-70 / 2.8-4 Contemporary

      • Ro686

Why do you offer 17-50 tamron with a stub? If the version is sharper without a stabilizer?

  • an256

Probably in terms of reliability, he is not very.

  • Valery

Good day. I bought such a used one for nikon d40 in addition to the kit 18-55 and fix 50 1.8g. Draws a very beautiful sharp picture, perfectly blurs the background, portraits are superb, aperture 2.8 helps a lot. I shoot mostly in manual mode and in mode P, sometimes in mode A. I really like it. The front ring was loose and there was a lot of dust under the front lens. Found on YouTube how to clean the lens and fix the ring. I didn’t do this myself, and I don’t advise doing it, I went to a familiar mobile phone repairman, he has a large set of necessary tools. As a result, we cleaned the lens from dust and fixed the ring, now it sits tightly. It took a long time - then the bolts did not loosen well, then the decorative ring did not fit well in place, so I advise you to do this with the master. I bought a nikon d7000 in addition, in conjunction with a tamron 17-50 2.8 sharp photos are also obtained. But I prefer to use it on the d40 as a universal lens, the fixed 50 1.8g on the d7000 seemed more interesting, I also bought a nikon 70-210 4-5.6d for the d7000, in the end I use all of them depending on the shooting conditions. Of course, fifty kopecks is the lightest, but the 70-210 draws beautifully outdoors in sunny weather, and the Tamron 17-50 2.8 is a versatile reportage lens. I advise.

I have been using this lens for about 10 years. On the technical part, 17mm began to smear one edge. Everything! Hundreds of thousands of captured frames in different conditions, tenacious autofocus, acceptable sharpness. I tried to replace it with Sigma ... and I didn’t stand nearby, af slow, grease, and so on. Skychas as the main Tokin 16-55 f2,8, but Tamron continues to please. Great lens for the money.
