Review of Sony Alpha NEX-5 and two lenses

Today in Radozhiv a review of a non-SLR camera. Sony Alpha NEX5 is a MILC (Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera) - mirrorless digital camera with interchangeable lenses. Very interesting instance with huge potential and good opportunities.

All in order:

when you pick up the Sony Alpha NEX-5 camera, you get a very interesting impression, it seems like the lens is large and you need to twist the zoom by hand, but on the other hand there is no mirror viewfinder. After using SLR cameras, I just want to lean the camera against my face and see the picture in the viewfinder. Personally, I have been caught in this trick many times. Of course, it will be easier for someone to sight through the screen, but still sighting through the screen makes the camera very similar to ordinary digital compacts.

Positive aspects of Sony Alpha NEX-5 (as it turned out, quite a lot):

  1. Very large matrix. Attention: this camera uses a matrix from cropped SLR cameras APS-C, because its size is really large and exceeds all digital compacts. Also, the size is larger than in cameras with a 4 \ 3 matrix. Thanks to the large matrix, this camera is interesting. Using a large sensor, you can achieve low noise and good depth of field control. True, in order to cover such an area of the matrix, one needs to use no longer tiny lenses.
  2. Whole 14,2 megapixels CMOS based. More than enough for amateur use. It's more than mine Nikon D90, and more than professional Nikon D3(S)
  3. Video Full HD 1920 × 1080, 1440 × 1080, 640 × 480. For lovers of photos and videos in one small case, the camera gives you the opportunity to shoot with huge resolution. True, an important point 1920 × 1080 can only be shot in AVCHD format, and 1440 × 1080, 640 × 480 in both AVCHD and MP4. By default, there was the MP4 format and I saw the available options only at 1440 × 1080, 640 × 480, which puzzled for 5 minutes in search of 1920 × 1080.
  4. Compactness. The camera is very small. Given the huge sensor - this is a very big plus. However, already with an 18-55 lens it will be quite difficult to put it in a jacket pocket. But with a 16mm fixed lens, you can throw it in your pocket and purse. Personally, such a camera would be suitable for me on a camping trip - small size and good functionality.
  5. Rotary display. True display rotates only upright almost 90 degrees. It would be better if he had more degrees of freedom during rotation.
  6. Easy operation. Easy does not mean comfortable. All control is done through the camera menu.
  7. ISO 200 to 12800Moreover, in on-camera JPEG, even at 6400, a more or less normal picture is obtained. An ordinary digital compact cannot even dream of such working ISOs.
  8. Camera can work with any optics that can be hooked on it. To do this, you need to make the setting "allow the picture without a lens." For lovers of manual optics just a fairy tale. The camera supports metering in any manual, semi-automatic PASM or full automatic mode. Simply put, you can hook on to the camera through an adapter some small cheap fast lens like Helios-44m-4 and get just wonderful photos.
  9. Monitor at 920000 points. Good contrast display.
  10. The camera has just unique panoramic mode. The panorama is made of several pictures. What do you get a perfectly assembled panoramic photo.
  11. With manual focus, the 14x zoom mode is automatically turned onwhich allows you to fine tune. It is also an indispensable and even automatic thing when working with manual optics.
  12. In the camera you will find all the necessary hints by type bar charts, modes, parameters, etc. True, sometimes there are no elementary familiar things. Many features are automatically enabled, such as reducing hand shake, macro and landscape modes.
  13. Fast autofocus. Autofocus has a number of settings and generally gives a normal speed. But always remember that the aftofocus speed depends not only on the camera, but also on the lens. Speed will be lost to SLR cameras, since in Sony Alpha NEX-5 it works by the principle of contrast, in SLR cameras a whole additional system with phase focus sensors is responsible for focusing.
  14. Continuous speed of 7 frames per second. True works without measurement exposure and focus changes for each individual frame. Still 7fps in RAW is impressive. In normal high-speed mode, when focusing after each frame, the camera takes 2.3 frames per second.

Disadvantages:

  1. Manage everything through the menu. It takes more time. But that's a compact, not a DSLR.
  2. In automatic mode, a number of settings are not available.
  3. No ISO 100. For example, at the minimum for Sony Alpha NEX-5 ISO 200 and when using the lens aperture from 1.4 to 2.8 you can not fit into the shutter speed, which is 1 \ 4000, I have the same problem on Nikon D40.
  4. Limited set of native lenses. Only special lenses are suitable for the camera. Minolta AF lenses must be used through the adapter.
  5. Price. About 1000 cu The price is comparable to an advanced level SLR camera.
  6. There are no huge number of useful features like conversion from RAW to JPEG
  7. In automatic mode, the camera gives a slight overexposure to 1 \ 3 or even the entire step.

Interesting moments:

The camera makes an interesting sound when you release the shutter. At first, I thought that the sound was coming from the lens, but then I realized that the shutter movement was audible. Yes, the camera does not have a simple electronic shutter, but curtain slot with shutter speeds from 30 seconds to 1 \ 4000. Moreover, the shutter fires with a very characteristic double-click, from which it might seem that the camera takes two pictures instead of one. The sound gives some moral satisfaction, which is similar to the shutter sound of a SLR camera. And in the camera you can choose aspect ratios 16 to 9 and standard 3 to 2. Actually photo 16 to 9 below.

There is background control mode. Pretty interesting thing for lovers. For professionals, I’ll tell you a secret, this function simply closes and opens the diaphragm, making this magic effect of blurring the background.

Matrix noise - I was pleasantly surprised, as the camera showed excellent results at high ISO. True, I can only judge when viewing the camera JPEG FINE. My Lightroom refused to process Sony Alpha NEX-5 RAW files. Raw files weigh about 14 MB, and JPEG FINE from 2 to 10 MB.

Conclusion:

Sony Alpha NEX-5 is very unusual camera with a curtain shutter but without a mirror viewfinder. The camera has an excellent matrix with high working ISOs. Great as a great photo and video gadget with good quality. Find for 2010.

It's funny that this lens is also included, because it is not much wider than 18mm and just a stop brighter than 18mm by 3.5. Rather, it’s a marketing move to show people the possibilities of interchangeable optics. This is a wide-angle fixed lens that gives a viewing angle of 24mm in full frame. The lens does not have a stabilizer. The distortion is pretty strong HA removed by the camera, contrast level. Sharpness was disappointing for a prime lens, it is rather poor up to F8.0, although it is quite suitable for creating panoramas since the edges of the frame are quite sharp. Autofocus is optionally fast. Nothing special. The only serious advantage is its compactness and rather wide angle at 16 mm.

In addition to the above ... my flash blinks 5 times in front of the picture, that is, people constantly blink from so many flashes, and after the fifth time, it shoots ... how to get rid of this problem? Can I have clocked something in the settings?
PS Give an answer to the mail serge-boiko@yandex.ru

  • Stepan

Good day!!!!! I have nex f3 and I like it much more than 5! and is cheaper! I use a tamron 80-210 103a and a helios 44-6 ... the quality of the photo and the ease of using manuals without pretensions and my native built-in flash pleases !!!! I think to buy a 2x converter for tamron but I don't know if it's worth it ... can you tell me?

Arkady, help with the choice: I want to buy a camera,
sometimes a macro seed (hand made), but mainly for the soul ...
Is it worth considering Sony Alpha A65 or to pay more attention to Nikon D90 with CANON EOS 650D

PS I want to separately thank you for the warmth of your words (in articles, posts)
If you can send an answer to E-Mail I will be very grateful.

Arkady, thank you very much for your interesting informative reviews. Tell me, what are your prospects for using mirrorless digital cameras with interchangeable lenses in 4/3 format? After all, they are quite compact (with crop 2, we get a portrait portrait with FR already 35-40mm) and have a large fleet of lenses. How much worse are the photos taken on the APS-C? The area of the 4/3 matrix is only 1.5 times smaller than the area of the APS-C. (We remember that the area of the APS-C matrix is 2.25 times smaller than the APS and this does not bother anyone). I would like to know your opinion and, if possible, an overview of any camera in this series.

    • Arkady Shapoval

You can always shoot good shots at 4/3. If I come across it, I'll write.

  • Leonid

I have a choice or buy d 7000 or SONY NEX-6-I’m shooting D 90 now. I’m mainly shooting nature. I would like to have a small camera but I want it to hold and give high quality pictures. I read a lot of good comments about NEX -6 But do they correspond to reality? I don’t even know what to buy. I need advice.

  • Denis

Leonid, the skill of the Nex C3 and Nikon D90. And I can’t choose between them, although I have long wanted to leave only one. On the Nex side, compactness and the ability to fasten any inexpensive manual lens, it is better to fix a fifty dollars or 35ku. Nex for compactness and unhurried, (unpretentious maybe) shooting. But you should put on a Nex telephoto, put it on a tripod or think about a good flash: so immediately the compactness disappears.
Nikon D90 gives a consistently good result, with it you can and I think you need to use autofocus lenses, advanced flash. The mirror in the hands sets up a serious approach and the percentage of defective frames is negligible compared to the Nexus.
Personally, I have now stopped spending money on Nexu manual lenses. I sold all the large Jupiters37 / Zeiss135 / zuma80-200 and now he is with a staffer Konika 50 / 1.7 Well, maybe if money allows, I will buy him a 35 mm flecogon. So it is compact and functional.
    And to D90 Mark2 bought a flash / fifty dollars / tamron 28-70. So I divided them.

I would choose between D7100 and Nex6 in your place depending on the tasks

  • Ivan

Sony Nex 5, of course, is a transitional option - it is understood that the system will gradually “grow”. I have a Nex 7 (although I shot a lot with Nikon DSLRs, Minolts, etc., up to the legendary Varex 2 exakta from the 50s, but this is a different song), so I no longer have all the problems of the Nex 5 - there is a viewfinder, there is a cleaning matrices, etc.
As I think, the owners of expensive cameras take Sonya primarily because of the weight - over the years it is difficult to carry professional Nikon or Canon and several lenses, but I want something small and light for the street. The same thing happened to me: there was a choice between a watering can, a sleepyhead and a fuji.
With the watering can everything is clear - dear, because “cult”, it means “fanaticism” more than active photography. The prospects for the development of the system in the future are unclear - as it seems, Lake is more and more lagging behind the leaders in the digital era. With Fuji, alas, the developers gave up - they created an essentially “one-time” system. Buy a camera, but know that when a new model comes out, the old "system" will most likely not be supported (the bayonet is small there, hence the impossibility, for example, of switching to ff).
The second reason for choosing Sonya, of course, is the huge number of supported optics. Fine old optics.
And these optics are relatively cheap! It also has its own difficulties, for example, support is not unconditional (this also applies to rangefinder lenses), there may be mounting difficulties, etc. “The problem of infinity”. Fortunately, many problems can be solved if you have experience with old technology. The bayonet is "open", that is, the adapters are molded in huge quantities. True, the quality of these is not always good.
    But the prices are reasonable.
Finally, one more weighty argument - when you drag around the city with a huge wardrobe trunk, pull out a huge camera - it all attracts attention. And this attention is not always happy)
It also strains the feeling that “two hundred thousand rubles” weighs on your shoulder. It seems like you start to catch glances)
With Sonya, all this is not - her “appearance” is quite soapy.
She shoots quite well for herself, it definitely surpasses “budget” level DSLRs, the absence of a mirror also gives advantages over DSLRs - when you press the shutter button, nothing twitches inside the camera)) But a beginner, unfamiliar with old rangefinder cameras, will have it is not easy with this toy: Sonya clearly requires a more thoughtful approach than a DSLR. In particular, using the old optics it is quite possible to abandon autofocus and shoot with the flu, as they did before) And there will be an excellent “street” camera)
    PS Thanks for the review

    Hello!
    Maybe someone will tell.
    I have a Sony Alpha NEX-5.
It is possible to flash this camera with new software from this series of Sony Alpha NEX-5A, R cameras, etc. Or just the new Sony Alpha NEX-5 software and all?
    Thank you!

It's time to review the Sony A7.

  • Eugene

In the review, you wrote “Manual focus automatically turns on 14x zoom mode, which allows fine adjustments. It is also an indispensable and even automatic thing when working with manual optics. "

How exactly does this process happen when installing a manual lens? and does this have a Sony nex 3n camera?

  • Mark

Tell me, does the Sony Nex 5 \ 6 work well with the adapter and EF lenses (Canon and Sigma)?

  • Peter

I really want a review of the Sony A6000 from you - I'm sure it will surprise you with the focusing speed and the quality of the images and the ergonomics with the electronic viewfinder. I am sure that the future belongs to mirrorless cameras and mainly from Sony, it does not mark time, unlike Nikon and Canon, which deliberately cut the functionality to ridiculous.

  • anonym

    Your power is over, mirrors!
Sony has confidently and irrevocably marked the beginning of a new era of digital photography with the release of the cheapest (13 tr.) Camera NEX-3N (16-50 mm). The era of the reign of MIRRORLESS photographic equipment. The world of photography has shifted and will never be the same again. Tremble, professionals, your marginal destiny is a mirrored fullframe for crazy money. Everything else, from cheap to budget semi-pro, is definitely behind mirrorless cameras. Prepare a place on the dusty mezzanine, in five (inertia of consumer thinking) years you will remember the present day with nostalgia about the former greatness of its master Mirror.

  • Victor

I am very dissatisfied with the nutrition of Sony 6. Very quickly sit down the battery. Maybe the reason is in the carcass and glass - aiming on the screen - maybe too energy-intensive? I bought two branded ones, but they sit down quickly just lying on the shelf. Their capacity should be more or less.
Or here's another battery pen for Sonya Neks, but a third-party manufacturer. It's interesting to try it, but in the city we don't even have a Sonya's branded department - Sonya doesn't release a pen, only through a pull.
And Akum works with manual longer.

bought a used Nex-3c to load a Canon 70D. I hope I will not be disappointed, I took it specially for manual glasses, of which I have a lot. They say that metering works out with dignity ...

Good afternoon, there is nex 5, I bought Helios 44 (white with 8 petals with m39 thread) and an L39-Nex adapter, so with this bunch I can’t focus at any distance. Everything is blurry, what reason I can’t understand. The glasses are clean, at the zenith of 3m, the glass focuses without problems. Tell me what could be the problem?

    • Vladimir

You most likely have a Nex-m39 adapter for rangefinder cameras (the working segment is different, short, but you need it for DSLRs). You need an adapter Nex-m42 + m42-m39 (such a thin ring with a thread on both sides.

    • Sergey Prince

You bought an adapter for lenses for rangefinder cameras (Fed, Sharp)
whose working length (much!) is less than that of your Helios. For Helios
and other lenses (a la Zenith) you need a Nex-M42 adapter and since your
Helios M39 connecting thread, then you need another adapter ring
M39 - M42. Screw it onto your lens, screw it into the NEX-M42 adapter,
Connect the red dots on the adapter and the camera and connect! Good luck to you
      pictures!

  • Dmitriy

Made a gift to his wife - NEX 5p. Having filmed them ... .. sold the entire fleet of professional Nikon equipment. Why? I rarely earn money with photography, and carrying 3-4kg in a bag is constantly ... hard, not promptly, lazy. And the nex is always with you. And weighs from 18-55, 50 1,8, 10-18 4,0 a little over 1kg! And while traveling it is convenient, not noticeable. Of course, the DSLR is faster in terms of shooting efficiency, it is more convenient to shoot it, AF is better. But after comparing the number of good shots for the year, I still sold the DSLR. Several of my friends did so.

No comment is added with the address of the article, but ... and how many bit RAW does Sonya have? Nobody was interested? ;)

And where is the bit depth of the RAW file in the description? ))) Well, in Nikons we know - 12 bits, 14 bits, Fuji S5Pro - 16 bits ... And how many bits do Nexes have? )))
