Canon 60D Review

The first impression of the camera is very positive, the camera sits nicely in the hand, I learned to manage the basic settings in about five minutes. An optional monochrome display always shows the most needed camera settings.

Canon 60D Camera Review

The Canon 60D is a great camera for amateurs and professionals. Fans will find it’s not very difficult control, and Live View will help to get comfortable after the transition from a conventional digital camera. A professional will be able to quickly control the camera, guided by an additional display and use a huge set of functions in the camera.

Important Benefits of the Canon 60D Camera:

  1. Whole 18mp. On the one hand, this is a real search for the cropped matrix, on the other hand, a great opportunity to crop the image. For those who are chasing megapixels, Canon 60D is a great choicealthough printing pictures from 6MP and from 18MP to A4 it will be difficult to find differences. Also, to squeeze out their full potential from 18mp, you will need very sharp optics with high resolution. And optics of this quality also cost the corresponding money.
  2. Rotary display. Great thing for the video. For the photo it will be used very rarely, since Live View focusing is much slower than through the viewfinderYes, and it seems to many to be more pleasant to photograph through the viewfinder than through the display. Live View will be useful to those who switch from a soap box to a DSLR to quickly get used to it.
  3. Quick shot in 5,3 frames / sec... In fact, this is just a gadget. As you can see, marketers are chasing every 0.3 frames per second. Fast shooting is rarely used, so you shouldn't pay much attention to this parameter.
  4. Full HD at 30 fps, which means you can shoot 1920 × 1080 pixels videos. True, not all monitors can squeeze out the same 1920 by 1080, this is only needed for those who really want to do video. For amateur shooting 640x480 is quite enough, given that the video just instantly in Full HD mode eats your memory card. I will not write more about the video, as this is a separate story.
  5. Great display on 1040000 points. This is more than enough for normal menu navigation and footage.
  6. ISO 100-12800 (according to the real 100-6400) will help in any poor lighting, and at 3200 you can still take a picture in the editor. But I think many understand that great shots are taken at low ISOs on any cropped camera. Therefore, it is too early to talk about the working ISO 6400 for a cropped camera. I do not advise much to go deep into the pixel-by-pixel comparison of noise at high ISO of different cameras.
  7. The wonderful feature of the "Priority of Lights" ensures that there are no overexposures.
  8. Virtual Horizon Live View. Due to the fact that I almost always shoot through the viewfinder, I rarely use this function. The virtual horizon is really useful when working with a tripod.
  9. The camera has the ability to remotely control external flashes according to a special protocol. Little is written for this feature, but this is a very important point.
  10. Canon 60D has quick sync with external flashes, up to 1/8000, this is very important. More details in my article “how to use flash in the afternoon»
  11. Fast and accurate focus with 9 cross-shaped phase sensors. Of course, always remember that focusing speed is mainly dependent on the lens. I note a convenient focus mode switch.
  12. A million other useful thingssuch as battery charge levels, use of lightweight (small) SD (SDXC) cards, work with any manual optics (which can be attached to the camera) in aperture priority mode.

Of the disadvantages:

  1. A magnesium alloy case could not be spared on such a camera. Instead, the camera is made of plastic, although the supporting elements are made of aluminum.
  2. As for me, the controls are not enough.
  3. Small bufferwhich stores up to 58 frames in JPEG format, 16 frames in RAW format. It seems like almost 60 frames in jpeg is great, but considering serial shooting, the buffer will fill up after 2 seconds of shooting in RAW.
  4. Focus highlight with built-in flash. Very funny thing, the backlight during autofocus works only with the strobe effect from the built-in flash. This backlight takes more energy into the battery and warms the built-in flash more. And the flash itself rises to the working position.
  5. No autofocus in movie mode. No comment, the usual Canon PowerShot S5 IS soap dish even had autofocus for video.

Features to watch out for:

The camera has an excellent lock for switching shooting control modes. This means that if the aperture priority mode was set, then it will remain so and it is simply not possible to accidentally change it. To change the mode, you need to press the button on the center of the control wheel. I really miss a button like this on my Nikon cameras. Also, the disk does not have free rotation, but has two endpoints.

Raw files weigh pretty well, on average, a snapshot weighs from 20 to 30 mb. Before using the camera due to the huge number of useful functions I highly recommend reading the instructions. It may take 2-3 days, but it's worth it. The speed and convenience of working with the camera will greatly depend on this. The resulting image on the Canon 60D depends on the optics used to shoot.

Competitors:

mainly competitors include Canon 50D - but the outdated model lacks the ability to shoot video and slightly different ergonomics The Canon 7D is a more advanced professional grade camera (albeit cropped).  Canon 7D can be considered as an upgrade with the Canon 60D. Canon 550D and newer Canon 600D ergonomic controls and are simpler models than the Canon 60D. In general, working as a photographer, I noticed that a lot of pros and amateurs give their money precisely for the Canon EOS 60D, as there are great opportunities for photo and video shooting. And the video operators who shoot video on DSLR APS-C cameras most often use the Canon 60D and Canon 7D.

About the matrix:

Matrix has crop factor 1.6 (standard for Canon DSLR APS-C digital SLRs), and to calculate the effective focal length with a conventional Canon EF lens, you need to multiply the focal length by 1.6. Regarding noise, you can view the original 18MP footage taken at ISO 1600 and ISO 3200.

I bought my first car, d-60 optics24 / 105, tell me whether the choice is normal

    • Nicholas

      A great!

  • Shishoff

    Help! D7000 or 60D?

    • Anatoly

      D7000

      • Sergei

        Anatoly!
Before me is a similar choice between the D7000 and 60 D.
Please argue your choice in favor of the D7000, if possible without emotion, but in detail !!
Thanks in advance for your reply.

        • Scarecrow

The D7000 has disgusting autofocus and no rotary screen. Video is better implemented in 60d. There is nothing even to say about everything. Canon 60d vomits Nikon D7000 as an ace heating pad.

          • Dima

60d makes a noise like a tractor in the shadows and its limit is 640 ISO. And who sang songs to you about the fact that d 7000 af is bad?

            • BB

Come on, if we are going to necropostate, the 60D has quite a working ISO, at least up to 1200 (and this is about Jpeg), with AF, too, it seems not bad. I didn’t like AF on D5200 (compared to D5100 and D7100, I didn’t use D7000).

  • Igor

all the good time of the day and good mood. Can you tell me if it is possible to set a different name for files and folders for photos on the canon 60D. I didn’t find it in the manual (it always starts with “100 canon”, and the file numbering is from “0001-9999”. It’s not very convenient. Thanks to those who answer.
    Sincerely, Igor.

  • anonym

f / device Canon60D, memory card 10 class 32 GB inserted, does not work, shows “No memory card inserted”. Tell me what's the matter? Thanks in advance.

  • anonym

Format the memory card on the computer, if not mistaken, then put it on a 32-bit one.

  • Garik

Please tell me Canon 60d or Nikon 5300 for the wedding

    • Anatoly

Perhaps the best is Kenon 60D

      • Scarecrow

Anatoly, please, without any "perhaps". Kenon 60D is simply better than 5300, if only because it is a semi-professional, and 5300 is an amateur DSLR.

        • Vladimir

“At least by the fact that it’s a semi-professional” - it’s better to take a reportage, even though it’s older, but with advanced control, and in terms of picture quality, new cameras will always surpass, albeit a lower level, this is a trend, the newer, the picture quality better, and there is no getting away from it, therefore, dear militant Cananists, do not be so categorical. Even the most unpretentious modern SLR from any manufacturer will put 60D on the blades in terms of quality, what matters is what a person will shoot how and what are the requirements for the formal quality of the picture

          • Ruslan

"Even the simplest modern SLR from any manufacturer will put 60D on its blades in terms of quality."

For the quality of what? Have you shot with all the “unpretentious modern SLRs from any manufacturer”?

Most modern DSLRs of the amateur category are all about marketing: a huge number of MPs squeezed into a crop matrix, a multitude of modes a la "click and get a MASTERPIECE", cheap materials and a reduced resource.

In this case, the 60D is a full-fledged well-balanced METAL all-weather camera, it is not entirely reasonable to compare it with an amateur plastic one. Still, slightly different categories of cameras. According to your logic, 10 years ago, did photographers get worse photos or what? Of course not. A masterpiece can also be removed with an old film camera in the presence of straight arms, good optics and a developed sense of frame.

            • Ruslan

With metal I went too far, of course. Confused with 50D.
The 60D case is made of polycarbonate with fiberglass on an aluminum frame, which is also very reliable.

              • Arkady Shapoval

                it’s a pity that 60d is not a direct continuation of 50d

              • Michael

Well, it was necessary to shove 7D

  • Alexey

The d7000 has good autofocus and 39 points, while the 60d has focus from 550d, and the cat cried for points in it. Burst shooting at only 5k per second. And about a nightmare in the canon of pentaprism with 96% frame coverage, which looks like a mockery + a plastic fiction case! And the video he writes is no better than Nikon, I would say that for the videographer they write the video equally badly, only it takes up twice as much space. My friend having 60d as soon as possible takes off on my d7100. There are no pluses on the 60d side and it merges the d7000 almost everywhere, so the choice is obvious, and don’t listen to the bogey Kenon fans who are trying to present its shortcomings with merits :-)

  • Ivanov

A short review with a very dubious comparison of competitor analysis.
It’s somehow not at all serious to compare cameras from different classes
Where it would be more correct to compare 60D with Sony A580
The 60D has an excellent pivoting screen that makes life a lot easier when shooting. But with the flowers, the boot, like other brothers, is not very good.

  • Peter Sh.

“They write that those and those have a noisy matrix, and Nikon, in addition, has oil on the matrix, and that the seven, because of the low-pass filter, has a weak sharpness ...”

Do not believe them. Both experts and amateurs write on the Internet, which are two orders of magnitude larger) and go who is who.

Both are fine and sharp and high ISO. No oil has no matrix. Both the D7100 and 7D are great cameras. Everything depends on your personal preferences. You need to shoot them.

  • Lynx

maybe it was worth at least not shooting a tamron?
Yes, and select shorter shutter speeds.

  • Yarkiya

In the seven thousandth series there is no oil, it was only 600, and even at the beginning of production. And about the sharpness, well, as Lynx said, Tamron is not that dude.

  • Vadim

I thank “Lynx”, “Yarkiy” and Petr Sh. For responding.
Outwardly and ergonomically, the soul is very drawn to 7200, although it has never been held in hands.
In his hands once was 7 D, but without glass, a very serious device.

    • Lynx

Well, take 7200 if funds allow.
Shoot should be on what lies with the soul.
      It’s like a car.

      • Vadim

        That's right.

  • Oleg

I use a camera with a 40 mm / 2.8 stm lens - an excellent combination, reveals all the possibilities of the camera.

  • Eugene

Tell me, d300s (50 thousand months of work) or 60d (40 thousand), the price is almost identical. Fo is not the first (there were Sony a300, Nikon d3200, I have experience with 650d). Now I don’t know what to take for myself.

    • anonym

      d300s with 50?
twist the mileage there, as you can’t do it)
d300s is morally obsolete, 60d is already on the verge.

    • Alexey

      they told you right.
any nikon carcasses - any run is drawn in 5 minutes on a computer. at least 50 thousand at least 10 thousand
besides, old cameras often have a lot of little things from mechanics worn out.

  • anonym

I got drops of oil on the d7000 after 55000 in the left corner of the frame.
On d610, after 15000, a large drop appeared in the right corner of a friend - he passed it under warranty.
7d - old stuff, how can it be compared to 7100? especially with 7200?

  • Alexey

there isn’t much difference in carcasses. on the little things:
they told you everything correctly, D7100 / D7200 like other nikon, their matrix is often dirty, the old unit suffered from this in kenon. most likely coverage features or something :)
kenons - matrix - more crop factor, at least a little more.
you can put Nikon lenses on kenons through an adapter, on the contrary - in no way.
Nikon, due to the F mount, basically has no AF lenses better than 1.4
see AF - double crosses, ordinary crosses, etc.
Kenon has better skinton; Nikon has better drag and drop shadows and better DD.

IMHO, the main thing is - see optics, the Nikon / Kenon optics lines do not match.
and the carcass, it is a consumable in comparison with the service life and the price of good optics.

    ps
many complaints now about the lack of spare parts for Nikon for repair. the repair period may be 3 months or more, including for the popular D7100 / D7200.

  • Mario

According to the specification, the Canon EOS 70D turns on in 0,15 seconds. I do not know exactly how it was measured for a mere mortal, it seems that the camera turns on instantly.

  • anonym

Please tell me, when shooting, does the focus not make any sounds?

    • anonym

Everything depends on the magician ...

  • Irina

Tell me please, completely confused. You need a camera to shoot portraits of excellent quality, which you can advise from canon. And the second question: will there be differences in the photo depending on whether I shoot on a full-frame camera or a cropped one? Thanks for the answer)

  • Anastasia

Good day. Which advise you to choose between the Canon 700d kit 18-55 DC III or the Canon 60d kit 18-55 DC III? Filming is more subject, well, for nature, and so on. thanks

    • Lynx

seven hundred, or 650, it is cheaper and the validity is the same.

  • Ilya

Good afternoon, tell me please, I’m choosing the first DSLR for myself now, I chose Nikon d3300 from 18-105, but today my friend offered me his 60d kenon with sigma 17-70. I would be very grateful for a less objective assessment of these cameras, in order to help me with the choice)

    • anonym

You choose between a modern amateur nikon for an amateur and a Yuzan advanced kanon (with a non-native lens). here it is rather necessary to choose according to condition and price, well, which system you like best - in general, the Canon system is better

  • Dasha

Please tell me what is better than Canon 60D or canon 550D.

    • Ilyas

      stupid comparison)
For you, I think it’s quite 550D will be supir)

      • Oleg

Ilyas, did you look at the comment date? It seems to me that Dasha bought Nikon a long time ago =)

  • Andrew

Thanks for the review of the Canon 60D. There will be something to push off

  • Koba

At various times, the Canon 60D and Tshlsht D7000 personally crawled. The video is definitely better than Kenon, and it also has a flip display. In all other respects, especially in noise in photographs and dynamic range, Nikon is superior to him (as well as the more advanced 7D, although the latter is a top crooked zerkal and it is a pleasure to work with it, but only up to ISO800 !!!!).

  • Zhenya

Tell me) Nikon D5300 or Kenon 60d?)

    • EVG

      D7000-D7100-D7200

    • Valentine

Definitely a D5300. From the question it is clear that a beginner is an amateur. D5300 is just for lovers. 60D carcass for advanced users with significantly greater capabilities. And do not choose your camera only for the price. You need a camera + optics, at least. Further, it is not necessary to take the old dead carcasses, even if they tell you that they are professional. The more professional the carcass, the longer you will deal with it. You are not an expert and you will not be able to assess how bad her condition is.

    • anonym

buy better Canon 5D instead of crooked sludge.

      • a guest

Do not grind! 5d old trash

        • anonym

This crop is the same old trash.
If you choose the old trash full frame or the old trash crop for the minus the comparable money, the full frame trash is definitely better.
