Canon 60D Review

The first impression of the camera is very positive, the camera sits nicely in the hand, I learned to manage the basic settings in about five minutes. An optional monochrome display always shows the most needed camera settings.

Canon 60D Camera Review

The Canon 60D is a great camera for amateurs and professionals. Fans will find it’s not very difficult control, and Live View will help to get comfortable after the transition from a conventional digital camera. A professional will be able to quickly control the camera, guided by an additional display and use a huge set of functions in the camera.

Important Benefits of the Canon 60D Camera:

  1. Whole 18mp. On the one hand, this is a real search for the cropped matrix, on the other hand, a great opportunity to crop the image. For those who are chasing megapixels, Canon 60D is a great choicealthough printing pictures from 6MP and from 18MP to A4 it will be difficult to find differences. Also, to squeeze out their full potential from 18mp, you will need very sharp optics with high resolution. And optics of this quality also cost the corresponding money.
  2. Rotary display. Great thing for the video. For the photo it will be used very rarely, since Live View focusing is much slower than through the viewfinderYes, and it seems to many to be more pleasant to photograph through the viewfinder than through the display. Live View will be useful to those who switch from a soap box to a DSLR to quickly get used to it.
  3. Quick shot in 5,3 frames / sec... In fact, this is just a gadget. As you can see, marketers are chasing every 0.3 frames per second. Fast shooting is rarely used, so you shouldn't pay much attention to this parameter.
  4. Full HD at 30 fps, which means you can shoot 1920 × 1080 pixels videos. True, not all monitors can squeeze out the same 1920 by 1080, this is only needed for those who really want to do video. For amateur shooting 640x480 is quite enough, given that the video just instantly in Full HD mode eats your memory card. I will not write more about the video, as this is a separate story.
  5. Great display on 1040000 points. This is more than enough for normal menu navigation and footage.
  6. ISO 100-12800 (according to the real 100-6400) will help in any poor lighting, and at 3200 you can still take a picture in the editor. But I think many understand that great shots are taken at low ISOs on any cropped camera. Therefore, it is too early to talk about the working ISO 6400 for a cropped camera. I do not advise much to go deep into the pixel-by-pixel comparison of noise at high ISO of different cameras.
  7. The wonderful feature of the "Priority of Lights" ensures that there are no overexposures.
  8. Virtual Horizon Live View. Due to the fact that I almost always shoot through the viewfinder, I rarely use this function. The virtual horizon is really useful when working with a tripod.
  9. The camera has the ability to remotely control external flashes according to a special protocol. Little is written for this feature, but this is a very important point.
  10. Canon 60D has quick sync with external flashes, up to 1/8000, this is very important. More details in my article “how to use flash in the afternoon»
  11. Fast and accurate focus with 9 cross-shaped phase sensors. Of course, always remember that focusing speed is mainly dependent on the lens. I note a convenient focus mode switch.
  12. A million other useful thingssuch as battery charge levels, use of lightweight (small) SD (SDXC) cards, work with any manual optics (which can be attached to the camera) in aperture priority mode.

Of the disadvantages:

  1. A magnesium alloy case could not be spared on such a camera. Instead, the camera is made of plastic, although the supporting elements are made of aluminum.
  2. As for me, the controls are not enough.
  3. Small bufferwhich stores up to 58 frames in JPEG format, 16 frames in RAW format. It seems like almost 60 frames in jpeg is great, but considering serial shooting, the buffer will fill up after 2 seconds of shooting in RAW.
  4. Focus highlight with built-in flash. Very funny thing, the backlight during autofocus works only with the strobe effect from the built-in flash. This backlight takes more energy into the battery and warms the built-in flash more. And the flash itself rises to the working position.
  5. No autofocus in movie mode. No comment, the usual Canon PowerShot S5 IS soap dish even had autofocus for video.

Features to watch out for:

The camera has an excellent lock for switching shooting control modes. This means that if the aperture priority mode was set, then it will remain so and it is simply not possible to accidentally change it. To change the mode, you need to press the button on the center of the control wheel. I really miss a button like this on my Nikon cameras. Also, the disk does not have free rotation, but has two endpoints.

Raw files weigh pretty well, on average, a snapshot weighs from 20 to 30 mb. Before using the camera due to the huge number of useful functions I highly recommend reading the instructions. It may take 2-3 days, but it's worth it. The speed and convenience of working with the camera will greatly depend on this. The resulting image on the Canon 60D depends on the optics used to shoot.

Competitors:

mainly competitors include Canon 50D - but the outdated model lacks the ability to shoot video and slightly different ergonomics The Canon 7D is a more advanced professional grade camera (albeit cropped).  Canon 7D can be considered as an upgrade with the Canon 60D. Canon 550D and newer Canon 600D ergonomic controls and are simpler models than the Canon 60D. In general, working as a photographer, I noticed that a lot of pros and amateurs give their money precisely for the Canon EOS 60D, as there are great opportunities for photo and video shooting. And the video operators who shoot video on DSLR APS-C cameras most often use the Canon 60D and Canon 7D.

About the matrix:

Matrix has crop factor 1.6 (standard for Canon DSLR APS-C digital SLRs), and to calculate the effective focal length with a conventional Canon EF lens, you need to multiply the focal length by 1.6. Regarding noise, you can view the original 18MP footage taken at ISO 1600 and ISO 3200.

the camera is quite pleasant to operate, has as much as 18mp and an excellent extended set of important functions for professionals, such as remote flash control, quick sync, additional display, etc. The camera is perfect for both amateur and professional.

Arkadiy, I’m blowing a dyaky for a walk and looking around the camera :)
he himself is a candle of harassment! A good look and a good look for me! :)

  • The

Thanks for the nice review :)

  • Alexander

Arkady, is it not difficult for you to make a test review of the canon eos 1100d? Before me is the choice of an entry-level DSLR in the price category of 4000 UAH, I drew attention to the nikon d3000 but doubted its shortcomings.
    Thank you.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I’ll be happy to review, give me only this camera for a day in your hands. 1100d will be better than the D3000, if you look in the direction of Nikon, that one there is the best budget option 3100.

  • Alexander

Arkady leave your coordinates, I think we will meet with you in the near future.
I offer you help in purchasing the camera, from me the camera for the day is in your hands. =)
    Thank you.

  • Eugene

I bought such a camera and drew on one unpleasant moment - the uneven sensitivity of pixels on the narrow iso, manifests itself if you photograph, for example, a clear sky in raw and enlarge in the editor, in the old eos 350d the uniformity was much better. True, if in 60d you reduce the resolution to 10 mgpx, then the picture seems to become much better

  • Elena

there is a choice between this camera and the Nikon D90. What do you advise to choose?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I advise Canon 60D.

      • Oleg

And if you compare the Canon 60D with the Nikon D7000?

  • Olga

Good afternoon, tell me please, what kind of lens was taken when testing the camera?
    Thank you.

  • Catherine

“There is no autofocus in video mode. No comment, the usual Canon PowerShot S5 IS soapbox had autofocus for video. "
How is it not ??? The AF-ON button on the rear panel is from the top right.

    • Arkady Shapoval

There is no autofocus during movie shooting. There is focus only until you click on the video recording button.

      • Alexey

There is autofocus in the video, but it is made rather poorly, so roughly speaking it is not. )))

I personally shot at 60d and 600d and I shoot at 7d. All of them have autofocus.

  • Dmitriy

For a beginner, recommend a small external flash for the Canon EOS 60D.
    Thank you.

  • Andrei

    Hello.
    I have a d3100 and now I have a choice of carcass, canon 60d or d7000.
I did not find any special differences, only ergonomics and body, what would you advise between these two carcasses. I know that the Kenons have a large working area - that's why it's easier to use the old optics while maintaining "infinity".

    • Arkady Shapoval

This is more suited to the question "Nikon or Canon", therefore, I advise you to solve it first of all. The D7000 has autofocus when shooting video and shoots faster in burst.

      • Andrei

Canon is some kind of plastic, but there is a good video mode, Magic Latern firmware, a slightly different ergonomics.
Of the minuses, as for me, there is no back / front focus correction, unlike the D7000.

If, for example, use manual glasses - are boots better? By virtue of its crop (which gives a longer working distance) and therefore you can achieve infinity without sawing anything.

        • Arkady Shapoval

Crop does not apply to the flange. The crop for Kenon is 1.6x, for Nikon is 1.5x, therefore Nikon wins a little here. + Kenon has no manual focus confirmation, you must take the chip. Old Soviet "H" and "A" lenses will sit on Nikon without alteration, and "H" will give automatic diaphragm control + all old AI-S optics, PRE-AI will sit on D7000 and will work with a bang. Canon has changed its mount and the old FD Canon lenses cannot be used. Therefore, here is a serious stick with two ends.

          • Andrei

But you can fully use the optics of M42 without loss of infinity.
Confused only by the narrow DD. And the fact that all the lenses are somehow cheap in appearance, plastic edging. But I really like the video mode and the relatively “inexpensive” carcass + cheap optics.

Canon EOS 60D 18-135 IS KIT
Canon EOS 60D Kit (18-55 IS II)

Please advise with which lens is better to take?

    • Arkady Shapoval

18-135 IS KIT for portraits is best suited from this trio.

    • yuriy75

do not take the first one, the old version has a low resolution.

  • Zhenek

needed for portraits, I forgot to add ...

  • Natalia

What do you recommend: Canon 60D or canon 50D for wedding photography ??? And lenses to them?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      60D + Canon EF-S 17-55mm f / 2.8 IS USM + 50 1.4 + 85 1.8

      • Alexey

        And I would suggest 50d + the same 17-55 or Tamron 17-50 + 70-200 of any version. =)

In 50d, at least you can adjust the glass for bf and ff. =)

    • yuriy75

      or 24-105 4L

  • Natalia

    thank you

  • Bonya

What budget lens can I choose for the Canon 60D, for photos of various events ???

    • yuriy75

Sigma 18-125 mm f3.8-5.6 DC OS HSM is a good staffer.

  • Arthur

    Hello,
maybe you can tell me? I choose a camera between Nikon d90 and Kenon d50 (you still haven’t found a review on it).
Which one do you recommend? if I'm going to study with this camera first, and then later ... and try to make a profit)
    Thanks in advance

  • Arthur

It’s just that I was thinking of taking d90 already, but right now it isn’t available .. and they advised an analogue of 50d .. here I decided to find out an opinion ..)
I don't like the warm tones of the kenon, but it seems a little more comfortable in the hand of the d90 ... but I only held 550-600 of the kenon ..

  • Arthur

    Good morning.
Tell me still determined on fotik 50d.
But right now the question arose about lenses: they suggest buying 55-200 f 3,5-4,5 (it seems so) along with the carcass right away. Or buy a body, but then wait for the Canon EF 50mm f / 1.8 II.
    Which object do you recommend?
My wishes are from the camera and the lens: blurred background, bokeh, I like taking a portrait, landscape, flowers, something like macro .. and street photography ..
    your advice?)

    • Arkady Shapoval

I recommend fifty dollars (aperture and bokeh at close distances) and a 55-200 telephoto for street sorties.

  • Anastasia

Arkady, tell me, please, where do you choose 600d, 650d or 60d? Is the cost of 650 justified?
    Thank you!

    • Arkady Shapoval

600d, 650d and 60d are different classes of cameras. I would take 60d because of the more advanced functionality for photography, in particular the ergonomics above. The 650 is expensive because of its display.

  • Anastasia

    But 650 is a newer model ... (2012)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, the choice is all a difficult task.

  • Anastasia

..and video functions are cooler ... if you take with a whale 18-135, the difference is 150 UAH ...

  • Yaroslav

What kind of SLR advise regarding the same price category is only a plus with autofocus in the video. Nikon D7000 is a little expensive!

    • Arkady Shapoval

      7d, pentax k5

  • oksana

Arkady, please advise what to take better Canon600d 18-135 or Canon 60d with a lens 17-55? Thank you in advance ..

    • Arkady Shapoval

      17-55 2.8 smart lens, I advise it.

  • oksana

Arkady, please tell me, canon 600d with a CANON EF-S 17-85 mm f / 4-5,6 IS USM lens, just the one that you wrote is chic too expensive for me. Is it good in photo quality? thank you in advance.

  • Alexey

Arkady please tell me how to put the shutter speed 1/4000 on the video ??? I can not understand….(
