Using the Nikon ML-L3 Remote

A very useful thing for the photographer - remote control camera.

Nikon ML-L3 Remote Control, which I often use

Nikon ML-L3 Remote Control, which I often use

What gives such a remote control:

  1. Possibility command focus and shutter release from a distance and do not use any wires.
  2. Possibility avoid shaking (jitter) when releasing the shutter.

I have an infrared remote control Nikon ML-L3Which is suitable for my Nikon.

Compatible with Nikon DSLR cameras D80, D40, D40X, D70s, D70, D50, D5000, D60, D5100, D3000, D90, D7000, D600, D5200, D610, D750, D7200, D7100, D3200, D5500, D5300, D3300, D3400. And digital cameras Coolpix P900, P7800, A, P7700, P7100, P7000. And Nikon mirrorless cameras 1 V3, 1 J1, 1 V2, 1 J2, 1 V1,

It is very convenient to use the remote control for shooting on a tripod, for example, when you need to shoot on long shutter speed. On flimsy tripods during descent (pressing the shutter button), you can still get camera shake, but nothing happens with the remote control. Also, this is an indispensable thing for self-portraits.

The remote control is powered by one tablet battery, the distance is usually as lucky, but stable up to 5 meters.

work Features:

In order to use the remote control, you need to set the desired camera mode - namely remote control shooting mode, it is usually designed as a rectangle and radio wave pictogram. After which the camera will respond to remote control commands. When a button on the remote control is pressed, the camera will try to focus and take a picture of the parameters set accordingly. Everything will be exactly as if you directly press the shutter button on the camera to the end. The feature is that in mode AF-C the camera will not focus when releasing through the remote control, but immediately releases the shutter. The camera focuses automatically only in focus mode AF-A,AF-S.

In BULB mode (excerpt by hand) the first press of the remote control button opens the shutter, and the second press closes the shutter, you do not need to keep the button pressed on the remote control, it is much more convenient than using the shutter button on the camera itself, which must be kept pressed in BULB mode.

If you set the shutter button function to the 'Movie' option, you can control the video recording using the remote control.

How can I replace the remote control?

Instead of using the remote control, I often use the usual shutter lag (usually from 2-3 to 30 seconds, an icon with a watch). In this way, you can avoid stirring and take a self portrait or a general picture with friends on a camping trip or at a party. For professional cameras such as D700I have a remote Nikon MC-30. You can also use any radio synchronizer for flashes that can control the camera, for example ComTrig T320.

Little trick:

Taking off your hands under difficult conditions to avoid camera shake from pressing the shutter button in some you can set the delay for raising the mirror. So on my camera Nikon D90, when using this function, the picture itself is taken a second after pressing the shutter button. True, this method loosens the nerves of the photographer, since it is always customary that after focusing, the picture takes place immediately, without delay. It also can control the video recording.

Where to buy?

Please tell me how to be in this situation:
Nikon d7000 + remote control in BULB mode does not work, a dash on the display. No more problems. So, there is no other way out and you can’t remove, for example, star tracks from the remote control?

    • Lynx

I need a slightly different remote, alas.

      • Svetlana

        How much different?

        • Lynx

There are wired and wireless remotes with timers, a screen and other bells and whistles. On ebee and Chinese sites come across

          • Artem

My D7000 worked perfectly with a similar remote control, I need to look at the camera settings

    • Sergei

Svetlana, try using a tablet or phone instead of a remote control. I have been using it for over a year now and I’m not overjoyed. You put the camera on a tripod, and you sit down in a chair and in real-time control absolutely all modes, intervals and settings from the tablet, plus immediately view it all on the tablet screen. Correct the exposure and shoot further. To connect the camera and the Android tablet, you need to purchase the wifi WU-1A module. Who has a camera with wifi, there are no problems at all. I just don’t know if the d7000 supports this module. In general, it is sold as an accessory for the d3200 camera, but I have a d7100 and everything works. Software (free) for installation on the tablet is both in the Appstore and in Googleplay. There is a miserable Nikon Wireless Utility program. In it you can only press the trigger and view. I use QDSLRDASHBAORD V0.2.7 (the latest version is always available on the developer's site, and on Googleplay an old version that is no longer supported) In this program, you can do absolutely everything. A sort of remote directorial console.

      • Svetlana

Thanks, I somehow didn’t think about the tablet. Really))

  • Sergei

I forgot to write that you get a more functional and more informative LiveView mode on your tablet from your camera.

    • Anatoly, Gomel

As for me, this is abstruse. Then take a picture from your wise smart or from a tablet? !!!

  • Anatoly Bigaydarov, Gomel

Yes, I completely forgot an important detail! Lithium 3-volt batteries, which are popularly called coins, we have on average 22-39 thousand rubles per piece. In China, for $ 1-1,7, you can easily buy at least 2,5 pieces. I ordered at the beginning of May and yesterday (June 5) received for $ 1 and $ 1,66 for packaging (1,89 pcs.) CR 5 and 2025. Note that batteries and accumulators (I know AA and AAA types well) which are made in China, with hieroglyphs, pure China, I like - no worse than the most branded "energy jisers". As well as different multimeters (made under license by the Chinese) - one such device has been serving me since 2032. I just changed the probe - I accidentally cut the wire with a grinder.

The list of articles says "Using the remote" instead of "using"

  • Avtandiil Tumbochkin-Syroezhkin

Well, and what, the other photo theorists, no one has told clearly, in detail, how he shoots with this cheap Chinese remote control on the D7000 camera.

  • anonym

Comrade (or lord, I don’t know) Avtandil and others like them. What is not clear to you specifically?

You pick up this little shit, put the corresponding value on the camera wheel from above, step back / forward, and click on the button on this dead Chinese little figovka.
At the same time, it should be directed as a pointer at school, if you have been there, towards the infrared sensor. Where is this sensor, bother to inquire about the instructions for use.

    And that's all.

  • anonym

I came almost a month later with the battery set to zero ... It even swelled up ... One joy - the low price ... So it didn't work out ... I went to buy a battery ...

    • anonym

      this battery costs 30 rubles

  • Peter

How does the remote control interact with the camera, i.e. Do I need to “synchronize” it with the camera down? What if some joker points the same remote control at the camera while shooting and interferes with the shooting?

    • Yarkiya

There is nothing to be done, you have to drive away such a joker with kicks. ML-L3 just works and that's it, without any synchronization.

The answer of January 9.01.2015, 5100 regarding the Nikon DXNUMX says:
“In the camera settings in the video section, set the assignment of the shutter button to record video. The usual mode is when she takes a photo, and the video has a button next to it. but you can make it work depending on the camera mode and photo and video at once ”.
How specifically to set the purpose of the shutter-release button for shooting both photos and videos?
In other words, can the Nikon ML-L3 remote control be used to shoot video?

  • Alexander

Buy this remote control on Aliexpress ... It costs an average of 100 rubles ... And you will be happy ... Do not feed Russian online stores that inflate prices 10 times + shipping.

  • Victor

Well, maybe someone needs it. Great price

I purchased the ML-L3 remote control (original) for myself a few years ago. Then I used the f / a NIKON d40x. The remote control worked perfectly with this f / a in the “Photo” mode (since this f / a did not support video shooting). Then I bought a NIKON d3100. The "Video" mode has already appeared in it, but, for some reason, the developers have removed the possibility of using the remote control from this model altogether ... (only the self-timer remained). Last year I bought a NIKON d5300. This unit has reintroduced the function “shooting with the ML-L3 remote control”. No problems arose in the “Photo” shooting mode. The remote control worked as described in the instructions - half-press, focusing - a snapshot. But, when I wanted to reprogram the remote control to enable video recording, problems arose - the remote control did not turn on video mode. In order for the remote control to start turning on the video, the instructions suggest performing such actions. 1). Press the button for selecting the shooting modes and set the mode “Shooting with the remote control”. 2) Go through the MENU to the “Setup Menu” sub-item “Remote. shutter release ”. Here it is proposed to set one of two options - “Remote control photography” or “Remote control video”. I set, accordingly, the “Video recording” mode, confirm it and exit the Menu. After that, according to the logic of the instructions, the f / a should turn on the video after pressing the button on the remote control. But for some reason he (the camera) does not do this, but the shutter is released, and the camera takes just an ordinary photo. (despite the fact that the menu is set to the “Video with remote control” mode. Logically, if there is a separate red button on the device itself for turning on / off, then the same button should be (to turn on video) on the remote ... But, the instructions indicate that the Video mode can be turned on by this particular remote control, ML-L3 (and not by some other, more sophisticated). -that is a discrepancy. If anyone can help to understand this issue, I will be grateful

As far as I know, even on the proprietary remote control there is no 'half' pressing, there is one usual 'membrane' button. Are we talking about an 'IR' remote?

According to sabzh: there is 5100 I can check similar functionality on it tomorrow.

Concerning the 3100: IMHO, probably this mode was removed, because it would have to be carried out on the broach selection lever, and there is very little space there.

I used the IR remote control myself two times: I checked its operation with one, then with another device :-)
In this case, the radio synchronizer is more convenient: you do not need line of sight (you can, for example, keep your hand with the remote control in your pocket if it's cold), and the range is huge (for Yongnuo 603 - up to 100 meters, for example) + there is a 'half' press (although it is necessary doubtful).

      • Sergey

On D5100, when you press a button on the ML-L3 remote control, focusing occurs first, and then shooting. There is no half-press on the remote control. I noticed that if the focusing is severely out of focus (for example, the object is on the MDF, and the lens is aimed at infinity), autofocus errors occur. There is a feeling that the shutter is released before the autofocus drive has finished its work. When the subject is “slightly out of focus,” focusing is accurate.

    • Valentine

Turn on f / a in the video shooting mode first (live view)

    • Sergei

Yes, the same situation on the D5200

  • Vadim

For BB. Yes, in principle, on this remote control there is no “half-pressing” in the form as it is implemented on the camera, I didn’t put it so much…. But, nevertheless, when you press the button, the remote works differently. Sometimes - almost immediately (if the object is in the sharpness zone), sometimes - after half a second or a second (the time until it catches focus). Well, this is what I mean when the "Instant release" mode is set (and not with a delay of 2 seconds). There, anyway, it does not work right away. As for radio synchronizers, I know about their "dual purpose" that you can use them as a remote control. I have several of these, and also from Yongnuo. But I don't need such long distances (100 m), 5-10 are enough, in principle, this and this remote control is much more compact than synchronous ones, you won't carry them with you all the time ... So the remote control, in principle, copes with its photo tasks .. And I, nevertheless, would like to clarify whether it is possible for them to start video recording remotely. And if so, how ?

    • BB

The D5100 does not have such a setting, you can only take pictures from the IR remote control. For the D7100, if you set the shutter release button to record video, then as soon as you turn on the LV into video mode, the menu item with Ml-L3 and the operation of the remote control are deactivated (the remote control stops working). If the shutter button is set to take a photo, then when you press the button on the remote control, a photo is taken (it does not matter in what position the LV is - a photo or a video).

There is an assumption that remote start of video shooting is possible only with a wired remote control.

  • Vadim

It looks like "Vv" is right - dist. video recording can only be started from a wired remote control. In that link from the instructions for the d5300, there are two, in my opinion, streamlined phrases. The first is “Selecting the functions performed with the remote control cable ... OR ... wireless remote control”. (but, it is not written, for which situations the first option is applicable, and for which the second). In addition, in the very description of the use of consoles there is no less vague wording - “additional device.” (Also without specifying which one and in which case). Alas, I don't have a wired remote control, so I myself cannot verify the correctness of this assumption (about enabling the Video function from the wired remote control). If anyone has a wired remote control, I would like to know the result. Well, and there are, accordingly, several wired remote controls for different Nikon models

    • BB

A wired remote control (as well as a r / synchronizer connected in this mode) completely duplicates the function of the device’s shutter button.
I have a Chinese analogue similar to your photo - Meike Mk-80N3, I tested the D7100 with it: in LV-video mode, when setting the shutter button to shoot video, the remote control focuses when half-pressed, when fully pressed - start / stop video recording.

Please tell me, does this remote control work on d50?

    • Jury

      Yes, it does.

      • Alexey

it’s clear, otherwise I bought this remote control on Ali, but it doesn’t show any signs of life on the d50.

  • Alexander

I ordered in Aliexpress on December 10 - received today on April 11 ... Once I congratulated on the Purchase and wished good luck - I replied that I did not receive the Order ... disputes began ... I sent all the payment data through the Bank card .. and now I received ... Thank you for the short and clear information ..

  • Olga

Speaking of remote controls and wireless controllers, can you please tell me whether in practice a wireless controller like a wr-r10 transceiver and a wr-t10 transmitter have significant advantages besides an increased interaction range ?!

Today's climate systems are complicated equipment, uninterrupted functioning of which is possible only in case of their timely maintenance, diagnostics and repair. In addition to extending the service period, preventive measures carried out with air conditioners of various types and classes are designed to make it work efficiently, that is, to ensure the operation of the mechanism in the mode prescribed by the equipment manufacturer.

At the same time, filling the air conditioners with refrigerant is considered to be an exclusively responsible procedure that must be entrusted only to the craftsmen. Our company is engaged in the implementation of all, without exception, work options related to the assembly, service and repair of all kinds of air conditioning systems, and we can say from our experience that the successful, thorough and long-term operation of this air conditioning equipment depends to a large extent on how the air-conditioners are filled .

I can not configure my Nikon D5500 to use the remote control ML-L3.
It seems not so stupid, but nothing comes of it.

  • Alexey

    Good afternoon!
What good remote control tripod do you recommend for the Nikon D600?

  • Valentine

    Hello.
I have a nikon 5200 and I just can’t connect the remote control in the camera settings, can you explain it step by step? Thanks!

  • anonym

You can do without a remote control))) on the smartphone there is a free DSLR Remote program, it performs the function of this remote control, although the phone must have an infrared port. it hits me more than 7 meters. In the program settings, you need to change the camera to Nikon and on the camera itself turn on the photo mode from the remote control, as described in this article.

    • Artem

The problem is that the IR port on the phone is already a curiosity. Yes, and there is a penny remote ..

  • V.

I bought a Chinese Dicom TX 1003 remote control for a Nikon D 3000 camera. The instructions are in Chinese and English. All attempts to set up the camera were unsuccessful. In the store they say the remote control is working. Do not help with advice? Thanks in advance.

    • Michael

Yes, there are no difficulties to find. On the camera, set the quick release mode, press the button on the remote control and voila. Maybe there are no batteries or are they insulated with a transport film?
