Overview of Jupiter 11 under M39

Jupiter 11 one of the very good portrait soviet lenses. I put it to the vote on best soviet portrait lens.

There is a very large number of different lenses of the Jupiter-11 brand, you can additionally look into the review JUPITER-11 1: 4 F = 13,5cm P with mount Contax-Kiev RF.

Focal length: 135mm
Maximum aperture: F4.0 (closes to F22.0)
Number of aperture blades: 12
The weight: 300-400
Minimum Focus Distance: 1.4 meters (indicated on the lens)

The lens presented in this review is from an M39 SLR camera. Jupiter-11 has a classic Zonnar (from Sonnar) scheme of 4 lenses in 3 groups. The parent of the Jupiter 11 optical design was the Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar T 135mm f4.0 lens.

Jupiter-11 exists in different versions, for more details about the Jupiter-11 lineup you will find the review of its brother - Jupiter-11A.

Lens pros:

  1. About small dimensions - both the weight and the length of the lens are not great at all.
  2. Good image quality with the popular zonar blur of the background.

  3. A huge number of aperture blades, which is 12 pieces and allows you to get even bokeh, which is very popular when shooting portraits.
  4. Metal casewhich will serve for many more years. My lens was produced in 1962, as evidenced by the first two digits on the marking of the lens, while it looks at 100.

  5. Allows use on full-frame cameras. On the cropped matrix of mine Nikon D90 (and the rest of the cropped cameras) there is no vignetting at any aperture value.
  6. The focus ring rotates all 360 degrees, providing the smoothest focusing possible.

 Disadvantages that I have identified:

  1. The diaphragm has only fixed values of 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, and not a smooth stroke, like Jupiter-11A.
  2. There is no possibility of pre-setting the aperture, which appeared in Jupiter-11A.
  3. A rather small depth of field due to the combination of 135 mm focal length and aperture F / 4.
  4. The lens does not hold well office and side light, it’s difficult to find a lens hood and it doesn’t help much.
  5. Not really big aperture, torn only F / 4.0 is not always on hand, for example, when I took a photo in the shade under the trees, I had to set the shutter speed at ISO 400 to 1 \ 100 s at F / 4.0. Take a look at the Jupiter-11A review, there sample photos were taken indoors with a lot of light, but still F / 4 is too small to take off.
  6. Rare thread 40.5 mm under the filter, my usual protective filter 52 mm did not fit this lens.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with an M39 mounting thread (for SLR cameras, M39 X 1 / 45.2), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this you just need to choose correct adapter. The cheapest adapters can be found aliexpress.com

For use on modern digital SLR cameras Canon EOS need M39-Canon EOS adapter, you can buy such an adapter (adapter) here. Also, an adapter M39-Canon EOS can be easily replaced with two adapters: M42-Canon EOS + M39-M42. Detailed information on the use of such lenses with any Canon EOS cameras will find here.

An adapter is required for use on Nikon SLR cameras M39-Nikon F, you can buy such an adapter (adapter) without a lens and a chip here. Also, one adapter M39-Nikon F can be easily replaced with two adapters: M42-Nikon F + M39-M42. Detailed information on the use of such lenses with any modern Nikon cameras will find here.

How to use this lens with cameras of other systems (Pentax, Sony, Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic, Samsung, Sigma etc.) - ask in the comments and you will be prompted. If you have any questions on compatibility and adapters, ask in the comments (comments do not require any registration at all, any user can add a comment).

Personal impressions

The lens gives a good picture, great for portraits, the depth of field is quite small. In most cases chromatic aberration not large and almost invisible. Distortion is not observed. Max open f / 4.0 aperture is well suited for shooting. This lens does not pursue sharpness, but simply gives a nice picture. Jupiter-11 creates moderate contrast in the picture, for printing you need to tighten in the editor. In principle, a lot of things in the picture and functionality are similar to Jupiter-37A.

Flowers on Jupiter 11

Flowers on Jupiter 11

Jupiter 37-A has a diaphragm one third more than Jupiter-11. The optical design of the lenses is the same. I did not find differences in the picture between my instances on the same apertures. Jupiter-37A, however, is with multi-enlightenment and has a smooth diaphragm stroke. Nevertheless, shooting with the 37th Jupiter is more pleasant, since it has a more classic black color and does not attract attention. By the way, in my survey about the best Soviet portrait lens, Jupiter-37A takes the second place, lagging behind only the legendary Helios-40-2.

I really liked the size of Jupiter-11, which is much smaller than the popular Jupiter 37-A. See for yourself the difference in size between Jupiter-11 and Jupiter-37A.

Conclusions

Nice short telephoto lens suitable for portrait photography, the picture is very similar to the well-known Jupiter-37A. When used on cropped cameras, it may not be very convenient to use.

Good afternoon, I found on sale Jupiter 11 with a mount for Kiev 10/15, is it possible to install it on canon?

    • Alexander

      Read above

  • Anatoly

Arkady tell me on the lens Jupiter 11 4/135 automatic machine, as I understand it from Kiev-10, which lens has Nikon F
How this glass will be friends with Nikon D700
    Sincerely.

    • Anatoly

      Figured out
this lens was created for mirror Kiev-10 (Kiev-15) and similar devices (dead-end branch), the original mount and the NIKON F-mount (Kiev-17, Kiev-19, Kiev-20) are NOT COMPATIBLE!

      • Alexander

Jupiter-11 has a very large focal length. Of the milestones of AUTOMATIC machines, it is easier to adapt it to NIKON, sharpening the gelcoid will not cease, the gap is sufficient (he altered it to KENON and there is still a margin), but the rest of the AUTOMATS to KENON are in butt after buttress of the gelcoid, but it has not been pulled to NIKON anymore. I think if you go the other way, it may work, but NIKON is much more complicated. From this conclusion, whether it’s worth it, I just had them with the KIEV-15 camera, lay dead weight, so it was decided to take out the crawl, but I don’t advise just to buy, it’s very troublesome.

Today I bought Jupiter 11. White 1969. With interchangeable shank and aperture preset.

I docked movie Jupiter-11 with Helios-44m helicoid ... superglue. :) There is infinity, the work took no more than 2 hours. Spun Jupiter, sawed off part of the body going to the movie helicoid, sanded the butt end. In Helios, he gutted the glass and the diaphragm. It turned out that the diameter of the Jupiter tube coincided with the diameter of the area on which the diaphragm was. Degreased everything and joined with superglue.

    • Michael

I will continue. I had an idea to make Jupiter-9 autofocus. (Our hands are not for boredom :) I found AF50 / 1.8 with broken lenses. Dismantled, I realized that the 9th Jupiter is too big for him. Then the next implant for implantation was decided to use a lens block from Jupiter-11. In the evening I sat and thought about where and how much to cut off the sleeve of the native helicoid. On a lathe (to maintain the perpendicularity of the bushing axis cut), they cut off the “excess” and assembled it again with the help of cyanoacrylate (superglue in the common people). AND - ABOUT MIRACLE !!! - the camera sees the lens as 50 / 1.8 focuses, it shoots with underexposure of 1EV. Those. set the exposure compensation to +1 on the camera and life improved. If you have questions about the old lens unit - you need to clean the lenses properly and possibly the fungus under the front lens. The previous copy that stands on Helios-44 is much better in this regard. But that's not the point. The main thing is that it turned out to mate "hedgehog with a boa constrictor" which I am incredibly happy about. :)

Used Jupiter 11A in excellent condition, black, judging by the number 78, in appearance as: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:%D0%AE%D0%BF%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%B5%D1%80-11%D0%90.JPG?uselang=ru . His aperture values DO NOT FIX, unlike Jupiter 37A. :) The lens hood for it was originally sold in a kit (as they would say now in the whale, along with the case).
Pictures from him and Jupiter 37A (and almost like from Tahir 11A) are very similar. These Soviet lenses will give a big head start to modern plastic in picture quality.

Thanks to the author for the articles!

I will sell Jupiter 11 under a bayonet mount (Kiev camera) in a case as a new 5 tr post office boss.wret@mail.ru Voronezh write or call 9003023540

  • Bob

I have a Jupiter11 rangefinder, white, 1975, converted for Nikon (infinity). Aperture values are not fixed. I really like the drawing, contrast, colors, sharpness, although sometimes you have to tighten up the picture in the editor, but just a little)). Unpleasant - hares are caught by horror, the hood does not help much. Jupiter37 Better in this regard!

  • Stanislas

Who uses on Nikon - tell me up to how many meters the focus remains approximately. Can I take a full-length photo of a person?

  • Alexander

A strange instance. Not the best to see. I have the same one, only with a diaphragm closing ring, a standard Leukov diameter 40.5 for a filter (I use filters from a 49mm zonnar, through a lowering ring) ... Yes, and cosmetically better, judging by the photo. :)
As for the hood, in modern realities it is evil, in my opinion, for classic lenses. On the contrary, I try to emulate this “warm tube” illumination in numerous editors. And here, on you, you get "analog" straight from the lens. ;)

For the price, he makes 37th immediately. For the difference is almost twice.

  • Andrei

I noticed on my Jupiter-11 for M39 thread a strange feature: on an open aperture, with insufficient exposure in the center of the photo, a lighter circle, that is, a highlighted area.
Is this a feature of my instance or am I doing something wrong? I use on Canon 6D with a standard adapter with confirmation of autofocus.
    Thank you in advance!

    • Ivan

In my case, it was a square (window). Hood partially helps.

  • anonym

    cool! Jupiter 37A

  • Ivan

the review presents a lens from Kazan, but it was also produced in Krasnogorsk, and so, the difference is noticeable already with an open one - KMZ is noticeably sharper, and the rich blue enlightenment looks much more interesting than the yellow Komz

  • asp

Jupiter 11 is a great lens.

  • Pastor

I am sincerely wondering if this lens will give any very different picture from 70-200 4L. It seems like they have the same luminosity, but still Jupiter is a fix. True, the fix is old. In general, there is an opportunity to take it for $ 30, I think, is it worth it.

  • Maksim

I can not understand what makes the U37 better than the U11 in the design of the UXNUMX?
Aperture increased slightly due to the size of the lens or is the glass different? what else has changed in it, that the U37 has become better and less active?

  • Maksim

I will answer my own question. With the same optical design, the s37 has a slightly higher resolution, because of this the contrast in it is slightly less. Aperture, as I understand it, only because of the diameter of the lens has increased.

  • Metiss776

Arkady felts you got a bad bad specimen, I have a unique felts. Very very rich colors, and very sharp with an open, and on the field.

Hello Arkady. Please correct: “Rare thread for a 39 mm filter” - this lens has a thread for a 40.5 mm filter.

    • KalekseyG

Right I have exactly the same as in the review and also on contact-cues and both at 40.5

On my Jupiter-11 (without A) in 1971 there is an adapter KP-A \ N and there is infinity, but in the list of “some lenses with interchangeable shank“ A ”” it is not. The picture is contrasting, but it's a little difficult to shoot with hands on the crop, the focus bracketing described by Arkady helps. I live in Tehran, where the Ju-11 costs 2 times more than the Yu37A and one and a half times the Yu21M.

Good afternoon, photo lovers. Until today I was not a fan of Jupiters, all 37 of which are to me
didn’t impress absolutely (everyone was B.U.). But today I bought a brand new Yu-11 63goda
for the past 53 years he has been lying in a box (fantastic), the impression is that he just bought in a store, they gave me a UV filter and a macro lens with him. I immediately ran to shoot, I really liked the glass, sharp, contrast, bokeh super, practically it doesn’t go into any shades, the dynamic range is very good, the video is solid 4 with a plus. Aperture 4 on modern cameras is not a problem, unlike 2011, it’s sharp with open, and at 8 sharpness does not increase much (unlike Helios), you can put intermediate numbers between clicks. o +2 lens for rangefinders, Yu-11 with it with a minimum focusing of 1.4 meters, focuses at 35 centimeters, my portrait is even harsh for portraits, Sony maintains focus on infinity. Probably because the new lens is very good.

    • KalekseyG

Most likely it’s not the age (used, not used), but the quality of a specific sample.

  • Oleg 1

Good afternoon, photo lovers. I again tested the lens in the backlight, the situation is really bad, it does not hold the backlight (the test was hard), I built a paper hood immediately
it’s much better. But I think it’s silly to require backlighting from such an ancient glass, I have only one lens for which the backlight does not exist, it’s almost impossible to squeeze hares from it, it’s Sony 55-200. But I like portraits from the U-11 more than with 55-200 (but
    portraits only).

    • KalekseyG

Can you show how bad it is.

  • Oleg 1

Good afternoon, photo enthusiasts. Sevodnya compared the test U-11 and Pentacon 135 f2.8 ms. I shot an open U-58 f11, Pentacon F4 and further 2.8 and 5.6 from a tripod on a Sony 8 camera with a diaphragm, and both lenses showed very good sharpness on an open aperture, but Pentacon was especially pleased with the sharpness at f2.8, which I did not particularly expect from him, on the open, he is quite a bit sharper than the Yu-11, further also a minor advantage of the German. By color, P. gives a more accurate picture of Yu. Slightly goes into a greenish tint, the dynamic range is almost the same, bokeh is slightly stronger in P. .. In Yu-11, sharpness appears only at f8 at infinity, Pentacon is sharper at infinity and the depth of field at all apertures above. The video was shot at infinity, here the German leader has focus already from f2.8, the DD is almost the same, the quality of P.'s assemblies is just super, unlike Yu, who is at least a little loose (and he’s new), by P.'s weight 490g. Y. 320g. in a place with covers and filters, the Yu-11 lost the battle and will be sold, but lost very little to the Pentacon. All that I have described here is my subjective sensations and I do not pretend to their accuracy.
