Nikon D80 review

At the moment Nikon D80 is an outdated camera, but many amateur and professional photographers continue to use it. The camera was released in the fall of 2006, but is still popular, this is due to the huge set of useful functions and its trouble-free operation. The camera usually comes with one of 3 lenses

  1. Nikkor AF-S DX 18-135 / 3.5-5.6 G IF-EDthat was announced with the camera
  2. Nikkor 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G ED-IF AF-S DX, one of the best station wagons
  3. Nikon AF-S DX 18-55 F3.5-5.6G, a pretty whale lens.

Advantages of the device to which you should pay attention:

  1. An excellent viewfinder, more than its predecessors, but still does not provide 100% coverage.
  2. Optional liquid crystal display. This is not a relic of the past, but a convenient thing that allows you to quickly configure the necessary little things and save battery in contrast to the large main display. Also, there is a backlight mode, which is very easily turned on by the on / off button of the camera.
  3. Focusing drive. He is "engine"In common people or" screwdriver "- will work with all lenses from Nikon that have autofocus. This will significantly expand the range of possible optics and save some money. The motor turns focus pretty quickly on my Nikkor 50mm F1.8 D.
  4. Matrix in 10MP, type of CCD sensor, working with different cameras, I can say that CCD has sometimes more pleasant colors than CMOS. Also about 10MP - today it is not much and not a little. Don't chase megapixels at all, even professional full-frame cameras Nikon D3, Nikon D700, Nikon D3s have 12MP. I advise my article Battle of Megapixels.
  5. Many focus points (areas) (total 11 zones), as much as in the newer Nikon D90 or old semi-professional Nikon D200This is a really useful feature when taking pictures. After 3 focus points on Nikon D40, 11 points on the D80 are just a huge amount.
  6. The custom menu, it would seem a trifle, but you can customize the menu for yourself. I usually put out there ISO control functions, the built-in flash mode, battery power and shooting modes (portrait, standard).
  7. Great battery, same as in nikon d200, d300(s) D90, D700 making it easy to change batteries between cameras. On average, the battery can withstand 1000 to 1500 frames, depending on the lens and shooting method.
  8. FP Flash Sync Modeallowing you to shoot with an external flash with shutter speed up to 1/4000. An indispensable function, how to use, read in my article "how to take pictures with flash during the day»
  9. External flash control mode. An indispensable feature - allows you to remotely control external flash units at a distance in i-TTL mode. SB-600, SB-700, SB-800, SB-900 и SB-910 Ideal for such control. It is enough to switch the built-in flash to the control mode (C - Comand Mode) and set the synchronization settings.
  10. A programmable button on which you can hang a number of functions, I personally set it to focus modes - by point, auto, dynamic zone.
  11. A separate button for bracketing will always allow you to simplify the setup and selection of the frame with a successful exposure. By the way, there is an opportunity bracketing by BB and by flash.

Disadvantages:

  1. Joystick (multi selector) without central button - quite unusual for our time. This slightly reduces the ergonomics of the camera. Even on small Nikon D40 the joystick has a central OK button. In the D80, the "OK" button is taken out separately and to press it, you need to move your fingers from one place to another.
  2. Metering does not work exposure with manual lenses, a rather inconvenient thing if you, for example, use Soviet optics. And any manual optics from Nikon will work only in manual mode - this means that the camera cannot measure exposure with lenses that do not have a chip.
  3. The camera does not show as fast a reaction as we would like it to be (although this does not apply to the shooting process itself). There is no info button. The overall reaction speed (menu, switching modes) as in Nikon D40. But then, navigation on the secondary display is just great.
  4. Not necessary and not programmable button for viewing depth of field. On the cropped matrix, it does not really allow you to peer into the DOF (DOF). It would be better if the company spent on such a pleasant trifle as vibrational cleaning of the matrix or increased the shutter speed to 1/8000.
  5. On my copy, after 20.000 frames, the gum on the rear panel began to peel off - most Nikon's problem. It is solved by repeated gluing, and sometimes by complete removal from the camera. After 128.000 frames on the camera, the frame counter turns off and starts counting in the opposite direction. But the mileage of over 100.000 on my copy only says that the camera is really very high quality.

At the moment this is Nikon's cheapest and most practical DSLR APS-C camera, which will allow you to get almost all the necessary functions of a professional camera. At the moment, there are practically no new cameras on sale, but in the secondary market you can find a huge offer of Nikon D80. If the functionality is very important at work for minimal funds, then the Nikon D80 is the best option.

A brief comparison with a relative Nikon D90:

Nikon D80 has a basic ISO of 100, against Nikon D90 with his lo1. I Nikon D90 the maximum ISO is raised by one step, which is 6400. The Nikon D80 has a 2,5 inch screen with 230 thousand pixels, versus 3 inch with 920.000 pixels D90. And of course, D90 there is a Live View mode and video shooting. Nikon D90 also wins in terms of speed - 4.5 fps versus 3 fps. Otherwise, the cameras are very similar. I do not recommend upgrading from Nikon D80 to Nikon D90, D300, D300s without emergency. If you go already, then on Nikon D7000 or full frame Nikon D700 and others like that.

Here link to the archive with the originals - 586 MB, 73 photos in .NEF format (RAW) from the Nikon D80 camera.

Brief comparison with ancestor Nikon D200:

Nikon D80 same matrix as semi-professional camera Nikon D200. The only difference is the matrix kit, Nikon D200 it is double, which allows you to do 5 frames per second, while the Nikon D80 is single, which allows you to do only 3 frames per second. In general, they say that the matrices are different. The picture quality is very, very similar, I used a long time Nikon D200 and D80. Also, Nikon D200 has dust and moisture protection, it has more functionality, can work with manual lenses of the type AI-S, the shutter speed is half as fast as the Nikon D80 - 1/8000c versus 1/4000c. Also, the Nikon D200 has a 1,005 sensor, versus 420 for the Nikon D80. Nikon D80 uses SD cards, against big ones CF from Nikon D200. Well, the ergonomics are different. With Nikon D80 you will get the same picture as Nikon D200. When choosing between Nikon D80 and Nikon D200, the decisive factor was the battery life, which runs out very quickly on the two hundred. I do not recommend upgrading from Nikon D80 to Nikon D200.

Nikon D70(s), in my humble opinion, to compare is not practical due to the large difference in functionality. From D70 he took his classic design.

Features and recommendations for the use of Nikon D80:

The camera can very accurately show the number of spent frames for each battery and show the battery charge level with an accuracy of one percent. By the way, the battery is the same as the Nikon D90, D700, D200, D300, D300s, it’s convenient for me to change batteries between my D90 and D80 cameras.

Tips:

  • I advise you to program a function button to select the focus mode, this will help you quickly switch between automatic and spot focus mode. Also turn off high ISO and long shutter noise reduction functions, since they greatly reduce the number of frames in the buffer, there are about three of them. With disabled features you can achieve 6 frames in RAW in the buffer.
  • I use Nikon D80 and 32GB Class 10 without any problems SD HC memory card, this means that the camera works adequately with new memory cards, so you don’t have to worry about the age and compatibility of the camera.
  • Since this is still a DX camera, I do not advise buying expensive DX lenses for it, then you still have to switch to a full frame. Well, if the DX format is fine, then Nikon 35mm F1.8, Nikon 55-200 and classic Nikon 50mm f / 1.8D AF Nikkor will be a great addition to the camera for little money.

Conclusions:

Nikon D80 - an obsolete miracle of camera manufacturing with great functionality. Suitable for both amateurs and professionals. Recommended as a budget option for any need.

I advise you to look at the page recommendations for choosing an amateur Nikon camera.

Hello. I want my wife to buy a gift, which is better nikon d3100 or d80?

    • BB

IMHO, to begin with - the d3100 will be a little more interesting: the matrix is newer, the working ISO is higher, but lenses with a built-in motor are needed.

But the D80 has a CCD-matrix (better color), but below the working ISO + there is a screwdriver.

    • Lynx

If it is “easy to shoot,” then D5200 is better, or at least D5100.

    • Jury

I switched from D3100 to D80 because of a screwdriver, I do not regret a bit, although sometimes I’m not enough

I have been using 5 for 80 years, bought a used one. Very happy !!!! I switched to 7000 - the color of the latter did not please !!!! I still love my old man 80. But the ISO lacks ....

  • Sergei

I love my D80. Never worried about the limiting ISO. On the contrary, I try to shoot at extremely low levels, using faster lenses. Fortunately, the presence of a "screwdriver" allows you to save on lenses.
But the visibility of the "grain" already with ISO400 is a drawback. I look towards FF. At least D610 ...

  • Pashqwert

I own a D7000, only the dynamic range pleases - nostalgic for the colors of the D200 sold for $ 50. And then I came across a D80 for $ 130 in a condition of a neat 30k run ...

Thanks, Arkady. Great review. Please tell me how different is the picture D80 from D40? Because I'm shooting on D40 now and want to switch to D80. And how different are their matrices?
    Thank you.

  • vitalitysharp

D200 and D80. For the latter, exposure metering works much worse, makes mistakes more often, the shooting speed is lower. If anyone wants high-quality jpeg right away - definitely the D200, then exposure metering is never wrong. Its shooting speed makes it easier to shoot at long focus and fast shutter speeds. Anyway, the only advantage of the d80 is its size. I am not a professional, I do not process raves. Experienced amateur. You can see the difference in the colors of the CCD and CMOS matrix on a normal monitor. After comparison, I sold the D90 and bought the D200, like this

  • Jury

Hello! This question interests. Here my d80 makes everyone happy, except for shooting in poor lighting, especially indoors with artificial light. I would say not that difficult, usually impossible. I am fond of photography, but what should I call it correctly, very irregularly. Without an external flash, something adequate in the room in the evening will simply not come out. Due to lack of experience, I cannot determine what the problem is. I use nikkor 50mm 1.8d, nothing comes out, at the same time in an electronics store I photographed on a d7000 with a native whale. The result is excellent, without stabilization and even at low iso. I took a canon from a friend, it seems like the 1100th, and he has fifty helios on it. Did a great job at the gaming club, where there is little coverage at all. But I have the same helios, but the results are miserable. Those. I can calmly sort it out on someone else's camera, but on my own in any. Is it really the difference in generations, or mine started to fail, or hands (but then why can I set up other cameras).

    • Denis

Without an external flash, it’s just that nothing adequate will come out indoors in the evening

      so it’s right! output!

  • Ruslan

Yuri! I purchased the D80 a couple of months ago! in new condition! lucky in short! So the pictures in the room are great in the evening! Try it like this! use so that there is not much noise, for example, max 200, although you can bend it to 800. If the quality of this photo is not important to you! But it’s better not to bully above 200! prioritize the camera, i.e. S! And for example, set the shutter speed to 1 or 2 seconds! I use a tripod in dark rooms so that there are no shivelki! And this I am writing to you an example without a flash in general! and if you turn on the inner puff, then in general a miracle photo will come out! And I am still writing this to you with a wholly dark lens! And with your fairy tale, the photo should work out!)) I think you just didn’t figure it out in the settings!

    • BB

      Is your keyboard 'dot' broken?

    • Jury

Ruslan, thanks for the answer. There is no way to try it yet, but I will make a remark. Suppose we have a tripod, but you need to lower the shutter speed to 1 / 20-30 (I don’t know the exact values), and at the same time we’ll have to set a large aperture. At the same time, on another camera (it seems Kenon 1100), I could take it off my hand with a shutter speed of 1 / 80-100 and the result was sane. Well, I say I would have written it off, but I took newer models, and even completely amateur ones turned out to be better right away. And of course, coverage is a relative concept, but statistics speak for me.

  • Oleg

Please tell me, is the camera resource 5 thousand or more?

  • Andrei

    Good afternoon!
Tell me, I often hear that ISO 400 on this model is no longer working. I have a nikon d40 (the matrix is happy), I think to take the d80 for convenience (I often heard that the photo quality will be the same). Tell me the difference in ISO between these models is?

    • Vladimir

I am facing the same problem! Who had the D80, share your experience !.

    • Vladimir

In a review of the Nikon D40, Arkady writes that he bought it again. It is interesting to know, Arkady, how did he like you so much !? And is it worth changing the D40 to the D80?

      • Lynx

        Colors and compactness.
change - if you need high-speed sync, puff control and more focus points.

        • Vladimir

Hello Lynx! You want to say that the colors of the D40 are better than the eighties? And what is there, after all, with this ISO? Many write that the matrix in the D80 is very noisy. How much better or worse than the forty? Or are they identical in noise?

          • Lynx

iso workers are the same. Noises, well .. back and forth, too. The colors, IMHO, are better for the forty (there is not so much a matrix as signal processing). Almost like a heel.
In general, if you take a camera "for the sake of color", then, to improve it - d80, -> d40, -> d200, -> s5pro.
If we take the camera from the principle “there is not enough money for more” - then the d40 will be a very pleasant training camera “nothing more and good results”. But it is better to save up for d200 or heap.

            But!
1.the optimal working ISO for them is 100-400. Maximum 800 and even then in the case of normal lighting. Propane and d200 can allow you to raise it to 1600, but there is already a characteristic noise. I liked it.
            2. you should take cameras with ssd-matrices if you WANT good colors and DD, while you will definitely shoot with good light - either a studio or an open air.
            3. To shoot reports on them, events, children running fast and so on - this is another test (although I succeeded).
            ....
For me, for the first couple of years, the questions of DD and color did not stand at all, it was necessary to learn other things.
Below I will give you examples from the same set taken on d3100 and d40
            ..........
On the other hand, if you want really acceptable high working ISOs, then these are cameras from 25-35 thousand even on the secondary (d700 or something from d7100 / 3200 and above)

          • Lynx

            time

          • Lynx

            two

            • B.R.P.

              And is it - D40?

              • Lynx

                Yes

          • Lynx

            three

            • B.R.P.

Well this is apparently the D3100.

              • Lynx

                Yes

          • Lynx

            four

  • Vladimir

Thanks for the answer Lynx! I understand that it makes little sense to change, in general, no. Simply, in the eighties, better ergonomics, and more autofocus optics park. Probably better to save up on the D300.

    • Lynx

for reporting better than three hundred .. or 300s perhaps

  • Andrei

By the way, I have d300s + 16-85mm and d40 + 35mm. I shoot only in Jpeg, because no time to sit in the converters. The D300s is of course a machine gun, even with a whale 18-55 fire. It’s very good to photograph children. But recently, more and more often I photograph on the old d40. Still, you can’t deceive the eye, the picture with d40 is much more pleasant and more natural, but ISO 800 is the limit even with aperture.

  • Ivan

Hello, please tell me where you can buy an elastic band for the thumb.

    • Pastor

They come across ali express, and quite a lot on ibey. I haven’t seen it in stores, and if you find it in online stores of the Russian Federation, it’s for wild money.

  • Dmitriy

To put it mildly, a strange review. All photos are on ISO 100. But only on this sensitivity does any camera have a good image. And above what? What is there for 800, for example? Or is it generally not recommended to set above 100?

    • Dima

On any camera, ISO above 400 is already a compromise. Yes, the newest cameras produce a clear picture at 1600-3200 with the correct exposure, but still everyone shoots at the lowest possible ISO)

  • Sergey Ivanovo

Good afternoon, Arkady! I have Nikon D3100, I got used to it in 5 years ... BUT! I also sold D3000, now I regret the matrix drawing I really liked ... Now there is an option for 8000 rudders (about $ 125) to buy a used Nikon D80 with mileage 60 thousand frames and a pair of batteries and a Nikkor 18-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5G lens ... What can you say, will it be a normal choice for going outdoors?

  • Sergey Ivanovo

Good afternoon! Does it make sense to take in addition to my main photo D3100 (lenses 18-55VR, 55-200 Nikkor and Sigma 18-200 with a stub) as an ADDITION for hiking in nature \ visit this model Nikond80 + Nikkor 18-70mm lens 1: 3.5-4.5G + 2 batteries and a shutter mileage of 60 thousand frames for $ 125 Externally, a solid "4" ...

    • KalekseyG

Well, if in order not to feel sorry for killing, you can, especially considering the cost of 18-70 itself, a generally good price

  • Sergey Ivanovo

Watched the ABOVE LINK today ... I did not like it! 1) In terms of sharpness, 18-70 Nikkor turned out to be completely identical to my “kit” 18-55 VR ... On modes M, P and A, autofocus works in an incomprehensible way - the points do not “blush”, remaining black and the buzzer does not “write”, indicating autofocus ... The 2,5 ″ screen turned out to be very small - even the photos are difficult to see - their details ... After 3 ″ Nikon screens, which I had 5200,5100,3100,3000 - the D 80's screen with my myopia is not happy! The viewfinder, of course, is light -do not take away ... In terms of the quality of the photos, THIS matrix, which is also in D 3000, is - the colors are good ... So I would gladly buy D 3000 for a party / forest / visit, even with a whale and smaller features than the D 80, but with a larger screen and better shutter.

  • Sergey Ivanovo

For comparison, 2 frames of my D3100 with THESE lenses at the same focal length.

  • Sergey Ivanovo

TAM was 18-70, and now 18-55 VR ..
