Nikon D80 review

At the moment Nikon D80 is an outdated camera, but many amateur and professional photographers continue to use it. The camera was released in the fall of 2006, but is still popular, this is due to the huge set of useful functions and its trouble-free operation. The camera usually comes with one of 3 lenses

  1. Nikkor AF-S DX 18-135 / 3.5-5.6 G IF-EDthat was announced with the camera
  2. Nikkor 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G ED-IF AF-S DX, one of the best station wagons
  3. Nikon AF-S DX 18-55 F3.5-5.6G, a pretty whale lens.

Advantages of the device to which you should pay attention:

  1. An excellent viewfinder, more than its predecessors, but still does not provide 100% coverage.
  2. Optional liquid crystal display. This is not a relic of the past, but a convenient thing that allows you to quickly configure the necessary little things and save battery in contrast to the large main display. Also, there is a backlight mode, which is very easily turned on by the on / off button of the camera.
  3. Focusing drive. He is "engine"In common people or" screwdriver "- will work with all lenses from Nikon that have autofocus. This will significantly expand the range of possible optics and save some money. The motor turns focus pretty quickly on my Nikkor 50mm F1.8 D.
  4. Matrix in 10MP, type of CCD sensor, working with different cameras, I can say that CCD has sometimes more pleasant colors than CMOS. Also about 10MP - today it is not much and not a little. Don't chase megapixels at all, even professional full-frame cameras Nikon D3, Nikon D700, Nikon D3s have 12MP. I advise my article Battle of Megapixels.
  5. Many focus points (areas) (total 11 zones), as much as in the newer Nikon D90 or old semi-professional Nikon D200This is a really useful feature when taking pictures. After 3 focus points on Nikon D40, 11 points on the D80 are just a huge amount.
  6. The custom menu, it would seem a trifle, but you can customize the menu for yourself. I usually put out there ISO control functions, the built-in flash mode, battery power and shooting modes (portrait, standard).
  7. Great battery, same as in nikon d200, d300(s) D90, D700 making it easy to change batteries between cameras. On average, the battery can withstand 1000 to 1500 frames, depending on the lens and shooting method.
  8. FP Flash Sync Modeallowing you to shoot with an external flash with shutter speed up to 1/4000. An indispensable function, how to use, read in my article "how to take pictures with flash during the day»
  9. External flash control mode. An indispensable feature - allows you to remotely control external flash units at a distance in i-TTL mode. SB-600, SB-700, SB-800, SB-900 и SB-910 Ideal for such control. It is enough to switch the built-in flash to the control mode (C - Comand Mode) and set the synchronization settings.
  10. A programmable button on which you can hang a number of functions, I personally set it to focus modes - by point, auto, dynamic zone.
  11. A separate button for bracketing will always allow you to simplify the setup and selection of the frame with a successful exposure. By the way, there is an opportunity bracketing by BB and by flash.

Disadvantages:

  1. Joystick (multi selector) without central button - quite unusual for our time. This slightly reduces the ergonomics of the camera. Even on small Nikon D40 the joystick has a central OK button. In the D80, the "OK" button is taken out separately and to press it, you need to move your fingers from one place to another.
  2. Metering does not work exposure with manual lenses, a rather inconvenient thing if you, for example, use Soviet optics. And any manual optics from Nikon will work only in manual mode - this means that the camera cannot measure exposure with lenses that do not have a chip.
  3. The camera does not show as fast a reaction as we would like it to be (although this does not apply to the shooting process itself). There is no info button. The overall reaction speed (menu, switching modes) as in Nikon D40. But then, navigation on the secondary display is just great.
  4. Not necessary and not programmable button for viewing depth of field. On the cropped matrix, it does not really allow you to peer into the DOF (DOF). It would be better if the company spent on such a pleasant trifle as vibrational cleaning of the matrix or increased the shutter speed to 1/8000.
  5. On my copy, after 20.000 frames, the gum on the rear panel began to peel off - most Nikon's problem. It is solved by repeated gluing, and sometimes by complete removal from the camera. After 128.000 frames on the camera, the frame counter turns off and starts counting in the opposite direction. But the mileage of over 100.000 on my copy only says that the camera is really very high quality.

At the moment this is Nikon's cheapest and most practical DSLR APS-C camera, which will allow you to get almost all the necessary functions of a professional camera. At the moment, there are practically no new cameras on sale, but in the secondary market you can find a huge offer of Nikon D80. If the functionality is very important at work for minimal funds, then the Nikon D80 is the best option.

A brief comparison with a relative Nikon D90:

Nikon D80 has a basic ISO of 100, against Nikon D90 with his lo1. I Nikon D90 the maximum ISO is raised by one step, which is 6400. The Nikon D80 has a 2,5 inch screen with 230 thousand pixels, versus 3 inch with 920.000 pixels D90. And of course, D90 there is a Live View mode and video shooting. Nikon D90 also wins in terms of speed - 4.5 fps versus 3 fps. Otherwise, the cameras are very similar. I do not recommend upgrading from Nikon D80 to Nikon D90, D300, D300s without emergency. If you go already, then on Nikon D7000 or full frame Nikon D700 and others like that.

Here link to the archive with the originals - 586 MB, 73 photos in .NEF format (RAW) from the Nikon D80 camera.

Brief comparison with ancestor Nikon D200:

Nikon D80 same matrix as semi-professional camera Nikon D200. The only difference is the matrix kit, Nikon D200 it is double, which allows you to do 5 frames per second, while the Nikon D80 is single, which allows you to do only 3 frames per second. In general, they say that the matrices are different. The picture quality is very, very similar, I used a long time Nikon D200 and D80. Also, Nikon D200 has dust and moisture protection, it has more functionality, can work with manual lenses of the type AI-S, the shutter speed is half as fast as the Nikon D80 - 1/8000c versus 1/4000c. Also, the Nikon D200 has a 1,005 sensor, versus 420 for the Nikon D80. Nikon D80 uses SD cards, against big ones CF from Nikon D200. Well, the ergonomics are different. With Nikon D80 you will get the same picture as Nikon D200. When choosing between Nikon D80 and Nikon D200, the decisive factor was the battery life, which runs out very quickly on the two hundred. I do not recommend upgrading from Nikon D80 to Nikon D200.

Nikon D70(s), in my humble opinion, to compare is not practical due to the large difference in functionality. From D70 he took his classic design.

Features and recommendations for the use of Nikon D80:

The camera can very accurately show the number of spent frames for each battery and show the battery charge level with an accuracy of one percent. By the way, the battery is the same as the Nikon D90, D700, D200, D300, D300s, it’s convenient for me to change batteries between my D90 and D80 cameras.

Tips:

  • I advise you to program a function button to select the focus mode, this will help you quickly switch between automatic and spot focus mode. Also turn off high ISO and long shutter noise reduction functions, since they greatly reduce the number of frames in the buffer, there are about three of them. With disabled features you can achieve 6 frames in RAW in the buffer.
  • I use Nikon D80 and 32GB Class 10 without any problems SD HC memory card, this means that the camera works adequately with new memory cards, so you don’t have to worry about the age and compatibility of the camera.
  • Since this is still a DX camera, I do not advise buying expensive DX lenses for it, then you still have to switch to a full frame. Well, if the DX format is fine, then Nikon 35mm F1.8, Nikon 55-200 and classic Nikon 50mm f / 1.8D AF Nikkor will be a great addition to the camera for little money.

Conclusions:

Nikon D80 - an obsolete miracle of camera manufacturing with great functionality. Suitable for both amateurs and professionals. Recommended as a budget option for any need.

I advise you to look at the page recommendations for choosing an amateur Nikon camera.

  • Go

    Sell for 650-700 cu
Included: [D80] + [18-70 kit] + [50-200] + [sb-400 flash] + [wires and everything else]. Mileage about 4000-5000, did not drop, did not bathe.
Is it worth spending that amount?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I would bargain.

      • Go

        Thank. I'll try.

  • Dima

Good afternoon, Arkady. I ask for advice.
It is possible to buy Nikon D3000 Body (10t. Mileage) for 2200 UAH.
Or Nikon D80 Body (30t. Mileage) for 3000 UAH.
What do you advise? I want to do photography just above the amateur level.
The site is super, I am your regular guest.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Then I recommend the D80, which is an advanced hobbyist camera that goes above the D3000.

      • Dima

Arkady, and if you compare the Nikon 80D with the Canon 40D, is there a significant difference? or it’s not worth overpaying, because I don’t find yet cheaper 4000UAH

        • Arkady Shapoval

You decide on the system - Nikon or Canon - then everything depends on that.

  • Dima

I wanted Nikon, read your articles and learned a lot of nuances about manual optics and now I look closely at what you can get from Canon. I want something budgetary for working with manual optics

    • Arkady Shapoval

Canon 1100D. But one trifle - all the old Nikon optics since 1961 have been digital and will work, but with Kenon, this trick will not work, they changed the mount when switching to digital.

  • J-fx

hello, thanks for the tests and in general for a great site, I began to get acquainted with photographic equipment from here, the articles are simply reference!

    a couple of questions

    1) in the comments, you repeatedly write what you need to check for broken / hot pixels before buying - can you tell me how to do this (preferably in detail)? in the near future I will take one of the cameras (question 2), and of course I would like to be fully armed (well, so that they simply do not deceive)

    2) between D50 and D70s - where to stop? at the price are almost the same, 70th is possible to see before buying, D50 - for shipment; lenses for the first time helios (for there are), then - Nikon's 50 / 1,4G; what do you think?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      1) close the lens cover, set ISO 1600, aperture F16 (optional) and shutter speed on the order of a second. Take a picture - if there are luminous points, then these are hot pixels, they are practically invisible at low ISO.
      2) better than 70-tku, it has faster cards and has a command mode with flash.

      • Alexander

Arkady, have you mixed up anything? Who checks for broken pixels at high ISO? In my opinion, verification is always done at the minimum

        • Arkady Shapoval

It is possible at high, at high, the result is more clearly visible, but due to noise, you can make a mistake in recognizing dead pixels / noise, therefore, at low, you can do more accurately.

  • Dima

Hello, we bought a D80 with a whale 18-55 without a stabilizer. There was no mirror technology before this unit. The first nuance that surfaced during the first days of acquaintance is that the focus is lost. I bring it to the person, and as a result to the photo it turns out that the device focused either a little further, or closer to something else. Is it with the lens side or with the camera? The second one is that in normal auto mode (green camera on the mode wheel) the device sometimes literally goes crazy. It happens on a sunny day that takes a very long shutter speed and smears everything. Is this a feature or is it still problematic?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Focusing problems can be due to a million reasons, usually a poor understanding of focusing. Regarding a sunny day, the D80 sometimes anneals with exposure, but usually there are no such serious problems. Perhaps flashing the device will help.

      • Dima

Thanks article! read, very useful and accessible for people like me. Understandable human language. From that page I followed the link even further: about the settings - like life is getting better.

  • Dima

I found broken pixels on my camera, what should I do? Damn, why didn’t I immediately check the camera on them when I bought it, and now I don’t return it - I took the used one in the shopping center.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Absolutely not deadly. In fact, more than half of the d80s that I met have hot or broken pixels. On my D200 there are more than 30 of them and I am not worried about this at all.

      • Dima

thanks for the reassurance. I have only 3 of them and the fourth one is in question. In my opinion, even in the store can’t be changed due to marriage with such a quantity. It is visible only in dark photos.

  • vladimir

there is a note of nikon d80 with a shot of 26000 frames for 2800 UAH. Is it worth taking or not?

    • Arkady Shapoval

If everything else is in order, then it's worth it. The number of shutter releases is not the most important indicator. My D80 camera has already taken about 150.000 shots, its counter started ticking backwards.

  • Andrei

What's better, Nikon d 80 Or nikon d3100? I think. The quality of the pictures is the best. I don’t need a video. I’ll go pick it up tomorrow. Please help, give an answer.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Image quality is better with the D3100.

      • Andrei

Thank you very much, Arkady :)

  • Maksim

Arkady, tell me how much the DD in 5100 and D80 differs. There are not enough finances for expensive engine windows, but the kit doesn’t work .. here are some thoughts to change 5100 to D80 or d90 (the latter is said to be very noisy)

    • Arkady Shapoval

D80 makes much more noise than D90. The D90 is a great camera. DD D5100 and D80 differ by almost 2 (TWO) stops, since the D5100 has an excellent matrix from the D7000, and the D80 has a damn old matrix from the D200 in a single body kit. But personally I like the colors on Nikon D80, D200 at ISO 100, 200 much more than even on Nikon D700. Therefore, the choice is really not easy. If I were you, I would not change the D5100 for something else, third-party manufacturers have good cheap alternatives to good lenses.

      • Maksim

D5100 even sold, the lack of a screwdriver is not the only reason)) now I’m racking my brains)) buy a new 7000 or take a bu 80+ fix and puff, but as Nikon releases a replacement d700 switch to FF. what do you think?

        • Maksim

          i.e. buy bu 700

        • Arkady Shapoval

          Could be so.

          • Maksim

Arkady, you have photographs taken under the same conditions at 80 and 5100/7000 I want to understand how big the difference is? photo is not my job ... but for the soul))

  • vladimir

thanks, I will keep in mind

  • Kostya

    Hi!
There is such a function as Center-Weight. I don’t understand what it is! Explain pliz and what is affected by its change!

    • Arkady Shapoval

This applies to metering. There are three main methods: matrix, point, and center-weighted. Affects the area over which exposure is determined.

  • Kostya

those. if it is larger then the area by which the exposure is determined is also larger, right?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Yes.

  • Kostya

    Thanks for clarifying! Very grateful)

Good day! August 8 on the site http://www.ok-buy ordered a ML-L3 Nikon D80 remote control. Yesterday I received it, tried to shoot in the evening ... It didn't work. I went to bed rastroin ... In the morning I decided to ask for help in the internet, I got to your site, and after reading your comment, I realized that fools are not sowed or plowed, they are born themselves! This is me about myself! It is necessary to read carefully the manual for the camera! Including everything, as you advised, got a positive result! Thanks you! And, about the site http://www.ok-buyI can recommend it. Remote on many sites costs thousands! He came to me for 240 rubles, and not a penny more! Yes, not branded, Chinese, but which of these works! And this is the most important thing! Sincerely, Vitaliy.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Glad for you that everything worked out for you.

  • Maksim

Arkady, even bought this device for himself ... basically happy with Geleus 44 gives much better pictures than on d5100. I ordered 50 1.8d but there is no wide angle, tell me what is better to look for - buy preferably a screwdriver (used) + I plan to switch to FF in 3-4 months

    • Arkady Shapoval

Cheap wide-angle from a full frame for use on crop does not exist. You can see Tamron 28-75 2.8 https://radojuva.com.ua/2012/04/tamron-af-28-75mm-f2-8-nikon/

      • Maksim

Nikkor AF 28-105mm 1: 3,5-4,5 D MACRO what do you say?

        • Arkady Shapoval

The screwdriver lens is old and not darkish. Not used, I can’t say anything.

          • Maksim

FOR 1000g. suggest, better it will be better than 18-105

  • Maksim

Thank you, you always help out))

    • Arkady Shapoval

I would not say 18-105 has VR and ED, IF

  • Victor

Today I became the owner of the D-80, mileage 41770, the lens in the kit QUANTARAY for NIKON AF 18-125mm 1: 3.5-5.6 DiO Maid in JAPAN MULTI-COATED 62mm. I chose for a long time, thanks to your website, where there is a huge amount of information, I stopped at D -80, of course I would like D-90, but the budget allowed this camera. Perfect condition. Arkady, I have a whale lens from D3000 18-55. What do you advise to do with it if you have the above? I sit, read the instructions. I really liked the camera, picked it up and did not want to let it out.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Give someone 18-55, it's hard for me to figure out what to do with it. Congratulations on your purchase.

    • Maksim

or sell it to me, for not expensive)) otherwise it is not convenient with one fix)

  • Maksim

Arkady, good afternoon! Can't figure out the sb-700 on my d80? more precisely with fast synchronization. When the flash is on the camera, shutter speed to 1/4000 is not a problem, and when I try to control the flash remotely, the shutter speed is limited to 1/200, can I increase it and how?

    • Arkady Shapoval

In remote control mode C, turn off the built-in flash (put a dash -), then everything will work out.

  • Maksim

exactly))) built-in does not have fast synchronization….
thank you very much!!!! as always helping out))

  • Maksim

Arkady, another question)) when you select any focus point except the central one, the focus illumination on the camera (d80) does not work as soon as the central illumination is selected, it works ... can I fix it? otherwise it is not convenient to frame the frame in the dark (((thanks for the answers !!

    • Arkady Shapoval

This is a feature of this camera.

      • Maksim

thanks, otherwise I already broke my head

  • Vladimir

    Good afternoon Arkady.
Tell me where you can buy a used camera type d90 - d80 - d7000?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Through the Internet - slando, aukro, at flea markets on forums

    • Christina

I will sell nikon d80 bu (brand new) at an affordable price)

  • Vladimir

What is better d80 or d200?

  • Vladimir

I want to buy another carcass and I can’t choose

    • Arkady Shapoval

D200 is a class higher, the image quality is the same.

  • Maksim

Arkady needs your help, or rather advice) camera d80, glass 50 1,8 + geleus 44, puff sb-700. I thought I could do without a wide angle, but something is not very good ... the panorama does not always stick together)). Please advise which lens to look at? I plan to switch to FF, but I don’t know how soon, but at spring rush it’s for sure.

  • Misha

In your opinion, at what ISO value does the D80 have the largest DD?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I never thought about it, I can’t say.
