Nikon D80 review

At the moment Nikon D80 is an outdated camera, but many amateur and professional photographers continue to use it. The camera was released in the fall of 2006, but is still popular, this is due to the huge set of useful functions and its trouble-free operation. The camera usually comes with one of 3 lenses

  1. Nikkor AF-S DX 18-135 / 3.5-5.6 G IF-EDthat was announced with the camera
  2. Nikkor 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G ED-IF AF-S DX, one of the best station wagons
  3. Nikon AF-S DX 18-55 F3.5-5.6G, a pretty whale lens.

Advantages of the device to which you should pay attention:

  1. An excellent viewfinder, more than its predecessors, but still does not provide 100% coverage.
  2. Optional liquid crystal display. This is not a relic of the past, but a convenient thing that allows you to quickly configure the necessary little things and save battery in contrast to the large main display. Also, there is a backlight mode, which is very easily turned on by the on / off button of the camera.
  3. Focusing drive. He is "motor"In common people or" screwdriver "- will work with all lenses from Nikon that have autofocus. This will significantly expand the range of possible optics and save some money. The motor turns focus pretty quickly on my Nikkor 50mm F1.8 D.
  4. Matrix in 10MP, type of CCD sensor, working with different cameras, I can say that CCD has sometimes more pleasant colors than CMOS. Also about 10MP - today it is not much and not a little. Don't chase megapixels at all, even professional full-frame cameras Nikon D3, Nikon D700, Nikon D3s have 12MP. I advise my article Battle of Megapixels.
  5. Many focus points (areas) (total 11 zones), as much as in the newer Nikon D90 or old semi-professional Nikon D200This is a really useful feature when taking pictures. After 3 focus points on Nikon D40, 11 points on the D80 are just a huge amount.
  6. The custom menu, it would seem a trifle, but you can customize the menu for yourself. I usually put out there ISO control functions, the built-in flash mode, battery power and shooting modes (portrait, standard).
  7. Great battery, same as in Nikon d200, d300(s) D90, D700 making it easy to change batteries between cameras. On average, the battery can withstand 1000 to 1500 frames, depending on the lens and shooting method.
  8. FP Flash Sync Modeallowing you to shoot with an external flash with shutter speed up to 1/4000. An indispensable function, how to use, read in my article "how to take pictures with flash during the day»
  9. External flash control mode. An indispensable feature - allows you to remotely control external flash units at a distance in i-TTL mode. S, S, S, S и S Ideal for such control. It is enough to switch the built-in flash to the control mode (C - Comand Mode) and set the synchronization settings.
  10. A programmable button on which you can hang a number of functions, I personally set it to focus modes - by point, auto, dynamic zone.
  11. A separate button for bracketing will always allow you to simplify the setup and selection of the frame with a successful exposure. By the way, there is an opportunity bracketing by BB and by flash.

Disadvantages:

  1. Joystick (multi selector) without central button - quite unusual for our time. This slightly reduces the ergonomics of the camera. Even on small Nikon D40 the joystick has a central OK button. In the D80, the "OK" button is taken out separately and to press it, you need to move your fingers from one place to another.
  2. Metering does not work exposure with manual lenses, a rather inconvenient thing if you, for example, use Soviet optics. And any manual optics from Nikon will work only in manual mode - this means that the camera cannot measure exposure with lenses that do not have a chip.
  3. The camera does not show as fast a reaction as we would like it to be (although this does not apply to the shooting process itself). There is no info button. The overall reaction speed (menu, switching modes) as in Nikon D40. But then, navigation on the secondary display is just great.
  4. Not necessary and not programmable button for viewing depth of field. On the cropped matrix, it does not really allow you to peer into the DOF (DOF). It would be better if the company spent on such a pleasant trifle as vibrational cleaning of the matrix or increased the shutter speed to 1/8000.
  5. On my copy, after 20.000 frames, the gum on the rear panel began to peel off - most Nikon's problem. It is solved by repeated gluing, and sometimes by complete removal from the camera. After 128.000 frames on the camera, the frame counter turns off and starts counting in the opposite direction. But the mileage of over 100.000 on my copy only says that the camera is really very high quality.

At the moment this is Nikon's cheapest and most practical DSLR APS-C camera, which will allow you to get almost all the necessary functions of a professional camera. At the moment, there are practically no new cameras on sale, but in the secondary market you can find a huge offer of Nikon D80. If the functionality is very important at work for minimal funds, then the Nikon D80 is the best option.

A brief comparison with a relative Nikon D90:

Nikon D80 has a basic ISO of 100, against Nikon D90 with his lo1. I Nikon D90 the maximum ISO is raised by one step, which is 6400. The Nikon D80 has a 2,5 inch screen with 230 thousand pixels, versus 3 inch with 920.000 pixels D90. And of course, D90 there is a Live View mode and video shooting. Nikon D90 also wins in terms of speed - 4.5 fps versus 3 fps. Otherwise, the cameras are very similar. I do not recommend upgrading from Nikon D80 to Nikon D90, D300, D300s without emergency. If you go already, then on Nikon D7000 or full frame Nikon D700 and others like that.

Here link to the archive with the originals - 586 MB, 73 photos in .NEF format (RAW) from the Nikon D80 camera.

Brief comparison with ancestor Nikon D200:

Nikon D80 same matrix as semi-professional camera Nikon D200. The only difference is the matrix kit, Nikon D200 it is double, which allows you to do 5 frames per second, while the Nikon D80 is single, which allows you to do only 3 frames per second. In general, they say that the matrices are different. The picture quality is very, very similar, I used a long time Nikon D200 and D80. Also, Nikon D200 has dust and moisture protection, it has more functionality, can work with manual lenses of the type AI-S, the shutter speed is two times shorter than that of the Nikon D80 - 1 / 8000c versus 1 / 4000c. The Nikon D200 also has a 1,005 sensor, versus 420 on the Nikon D80. The Nikon D80 uses SD cards, versus the large CFs of the Nikon D200. Well, ergonomics are different. With the Nikon D80 you get the same picture as the Nikon D200. When deciding between the Nikon D80 and the Nikon D200, the decisive factor was the battery life, which sits very quickly on two hundred. I do not recommend upgrading from Nikon D80 to Nikon D200.

Nikon D70(s), in my humble opinion, to compare is not practical due to the large difference in functionality. From D70 he took his classic design.

Features and recommendations for the use of Nikon D80:

The camera can very accurately show the number of spent frames for each battery and show the battery charge level with an accuracy of one percent. By the way, the battery is the same as the Nikon D90, D700, D200, D300, D300s, it’s convenient for me to change batteries between my D90 and D80 cameras.

Tips:

  • I advise you to program a function button to select the focus mode, this will help you quickly switch between automatic and spot focus mode. Also turn off high ISO and long shutter noise reduction functions, since they greatly reduce the number of frames in the buffer, there are about three of them. With disabled features you can achieve 6 frames in RAW in the buffer.
  • I use the Nikon D80 and 32GB Class 10 SD HC memory card without problems, this suggests that the camera works adequately with new memory cards, so you can not worry about the age and compatibility of the camera.
  • Since this is still a DX camera, I do not advise buying expensive DX lenses for it, then you still have to switch to a full frame. Well, if the DX format is fine, then Nikon 35mm F1.8, Nikon 55-200 and classic Nikon 50mm f / 1.8D AF Nikkor will be a great addition to the camera for little money.

Prices for modern Nikon cameras in popular stores can look at this link.

Conclusions:

Nikon D80 - an obsolete miracle of camera manufacturing with great functionality. Suitable for both amateurs and professionals. Recommended as a budget option for any need.

I advise you to look at the page recommendations for choosing an amateur Nikon camera.

Hello! Help if you can. After the picture is taken on the Nikon d80, there is such a glitch. And so it always happens, but there is a dark screen. Who knows what happens to him? Here is a picture.

Most likely the firmware was buggy, and this can be connected with some kind of controller on the board.

  • Alexander

    So repair?

    • Arkady Shapoval

You need to contact the service, they will quickly tell you what the problem is

  • Alexander

Service is very far from me.

Hello Arkady! He took off the back cover, removed the board, put everything back together, and a miracle worked!

hello, tell me please, they offer Nikon D80 + Nikon DX 18-105 + Nikon AF 50 1,8 D and which 3 lens Kitovsky 18-55 for 25 thousand rubles is it relevant today or should I choose a modern device, mileage I don’t I know how much, because it's through an online store

    • Arkady Shapoval

better, of course, something more modern, from the category of nikon d7000, kenon 60d, at least.

    • anonym

It is expensive. In addition, they try to double the whale range of focal lengths.

  • Sergei

Hello! Tell me what to choose: Nikon D90 with a range of 15000 frames and a price of 13000 rubles. Or Nikon D80 with mileage of 30000 frames and a price of 8000 rubles. I want a maximum of functionality for little money. So far it was necessary to shoot only on cameras 3000 and 5000 series

    • Pokemon

D7000 on Avito can be found in good condition from 15-16 thousand rubles.
This will be the maximum functionality for a penny.

      • Jury

we have laid out 7000 whales with a range of about 10000 for 15t.r. + expensive bag ...
I’ll take my son d80 with 20t mileage. for 4t.r.

    • Rustam

You can buy a D90 carcass for 8-9 thousand and a 50mm 1.8D lens for 4 thousand. This will be the maximum quality of the photo for a penny. It is advisable to buy an external flash, Nikon SB-600, for example. Can be found in just 2,5-3 thousand.

  • Jury

    Thank you Arkady!
I choose my son between d90 and d80 ... the difference in price is THREE times! ... I think to take him d80

  • Jury

    Thank you Arkady!
    I choose my son

    • Valery A.

Correct solution. It’s more than enough for a son, unless you go to dark clubs.

  • Victoria

    Good afternoon!
Please help, the Nikon D80 is out of order, I used it for many years, it suited me and now I absolutely do not know how to replace it. Tell me, please, that you can buy an adequate one, not expensive, but in order not to waste money, so that SD memory cards and lenses from D-80 will fit, I have 3 of them.

    • Valery A.

Hello. If inexpensive and similar, but more modern - d7000. If this one is expensive, then d90. The colors will take some getting used to.

      • Victoria

I mean not so saturated? Ehh .. And are the available lenses suitable for these models? Well, even so. But do not tell me, is the battery from the D80 accidentally not suitable?
Thank you Valery for your help.

        • Valery A.

No, not unsaturated, the saturation can be tweaked. The point is in shades, CCD matrices, IMHO, they lie a little, embellish the color picture - greens often get an emerald hue, blue skies are purple, skin color often has a pleasant peach tint, you won't see such colors in life. CMOS matrices try to reproduce colors as they are, but if they are mistaken, blue or potassium permanganate (the so-called cuff) “creeps in”. Lenses and batteries will work (the d80 and d90 have the same).

          • Denis

yes, the skin of CCD is unnatural, looks like apricot or peach

            • 1Ds_mk3

Better than greenish yellow like Nikon’s first CMOS or acid orange like Sony’s.
Victoria, from the color of Nikonov, even full-frame will spit. Take Canon full frame and you will be happy.

            • Anatoly

for the first time in my life I hear such nonsense about CCD matrices, you still rub people

        • Novel

Victoria, enter “500px nikon D80” in the search box and go to see the pictures. With my own eyes. So for any other camera model. Look at the specifications of the camera. If you already have a fleet of optics, it hardly makes sense to change it - just grab something next in your lineup. Be less concerned about the color, it is a local disease. It is called phototropping.

          • Valery A.

Well, yes, photography. Probably, statements about the units of canon, fujiks, sigma-phaveon, etc., should also be included in it.

            • 1Ds_mk3

              This is not a fallacy.
Until you try the above-mentioned Units from Canon, modern Fuji, Sigma on Foveon, you will think that this is something unreasonable. The color, or rather the perception of color, for Sigma and Fuji may be different due to the preset in the camera or RAW. But it will differ 146% from Nikon's CMOS colors. I recommend every Nikonovod to buy D800 / D300s and “enjoy” their colors. After that, understanding will come.

              • Novel

This is from the category of torsion fields. Honestly, in order to avoid such heresy, I would just blindly test a couple of dozen photos. It would be interesting to see how you would distinguish this mythical “color”. Especially after the inevitable treatment changes him to hell.

Color in photos and in movies is a tool. In the "Hotel Grand Budapest" all exteriors are pinkish and low-contrast, the snow is pink - and this is wonderful. In "Dark Times" everything is contrasting and muted, the black point is raised - and that's fine too. Amelie is red-yellow-green. In Game of Thrones, each terrain has its own color and the SAME ACTORS look different depending on the post-processing applied - which is great.

To fake color in photography, striving for some kind of standard of color rendering, is like choosing a woman for yourself according to the shape of the right nipple. Somewhat painful. Do you like the color of your one - yes ok, why the hell to yell about this in every message? For example, when I look at photographs, I generally do not care about what is filmed. And in confirmation I can find hundreds of beautiful photos from each of the cameras you abuse. Because in reality they give out plus or minus the same card holder, which a competent photographer will also change to suit his task, achieving the necessary sensations.

              • Michael

Enjoy, normal color. Hands just need to be removed and straightened. I have D300 and D80 and don't worry about the “divine” CCD color. This is nonsense

              • Andrey T.

                2Roman
About the right nipple - not the topic. Here, rather, who likes black, who likes white, and who likes redheads. And this is a more essential point. But, seriously, looking at several dozen new images on flickr per day, I quite confidently distinguish the colors of different camera manufacturers without textual specifications for the images (this is about blind testing). And in 90% of cases, the non-Canon color causes me at least doubts. And in 50% - quite active rejection.

              • Novel

Andrey, pictures on Flickr are not the color of the camera (in most cases). This is a fundamental color correction performed by in-camera algorithms. We can only talk about your subjective perception of these presets. In principle, I do not recognize size-based JPEG, it suits me a little less often than never, since it does not convey any sensations or the idea of the picture and does not allow post-processing. And an elementary mistake in installing the BB in general can disfigure the picture beyond recognition.

Therefore, when arguing about color, you can only say for sure that on your monitor (most likely, uncalibrated) under your lighting conditions, subjectively, the operation of intra-chamber algorithms is subjectively more pleasant for such models (provided that you are really capable of distinguishing them). Everything.

              • Valery A.

Roman, than to swear and spit without justification, get the cheapest device from this problem category - nikon d40 (50,40x), for 4-5 thousand rubles (canons, fuji are much more expensive, especially sigma) and you yourself will understand who is right.

          • 1Ds_mk3

Let me guess - you edit pictures on a laptop with a TN matrix. Another option - the office costs $ 250 at home from aserobank. Most likely not a TN matrix. Uncalibrated. Therefore, you do not care what to shoot - X-T3, 1DX_mk2, EOS R, d800e, d300s or Sigma on Foveon. I think that sf_645d or F80 charged Fujichrome or Kodachrome or aerocolor give, in your understanding, one average hospital result. At this point, the conversation can really end.
It is interesting to listen to the conclusions of theorists, in whom in 99% of cases dark whales gather dust with crop cameras.

            • Pokemon

“The shots on Flickr are not the color of the camera (in most cases). This is a fundamental color correction performed by in-camera algorithms. We can only talk about your subjective perception of these presets ”
Roman, this is taftalogy. RAW in almost every camera is different. The same BB can not be perfectly tuned in street lighting on the go.

              • Novel

Naturally different. And making the correction yourself, you bring the image on the screen to a specific mental image. The only task in which you need to bathe about color is product catalogs where color is really important, but there you need to provide the appropriate viewing conditions. In all other respects, I can not paint on color as a thing in myself.

              • Pokemon

I will add an example from my own life - I took D4 and Sigma SD-1 to the observation deck of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior (I had to take another X100T with me, but I didn't have it then). I tried to simulate Sigma colors when shooting. Did not work out. Dig deeper into RAW - it's still green, red and partly blue others. The picture on Foveon is more contrasting, but visually it is more pleasant. On CCD cameras it is also possible. But I shot there and there in RAW. It is impossible to shoot in jpg on Sigma, it would be better if it were not there. On Amateur photos with d90, d200, d300, d80, d40, s5pro you can understand by the greenery and shades of red and sometimes blue, where CCD. I don't have Canon, but I had experience with the third penny.
I ought to buy to touch the unit ... sorry there are few living, and good roads are rare.
Extreme Fuji generally discourage the desire to sit in ravahs. Laziness. And the profiles on the camera jpg are more interesting than the result after picking in their equal.
How not to rule the colors of the rav-s for A7m2 / A7m3 or d800 / d800e, but something that cannot be deduced by nothing, no, no, but it does come out ...

              • Novel

And if you remove the brick wall, what are the nuances? How color rendition, transitions, skinton? Sect.

            • Novel

This is not a conversation, this is esotericism. I do not operate with the categories "transparency", "airiness", "softness", "skin tone", that's all. This is somewhere close to audiophilia, when instead of music they listen to frequencies, and instead of photos they look at color. A separate sphere of erotic experiences, far from real life.

I see no reason to compare letters. Photos are watching. Including on the TN-matrix of a lousy laptop. And even, you will not believe, printed on photo paper. And if in order to view your masterpieces, you need a combination of a million factors, including the phase of the moon ... Well, sorry.

              • Pokemon

Are you still sitting on TN ?!

              • Novel

If I sit on the matrix, it will crack. On a working laptop, a TN matrix is not dead. I calibrated it, several times and processed the photo too. For processing Dell UP2716D photos in sRGB. For me, color is not an end in itself. And the "reliability" of color rendering is generally fiction. A photo is about a plot, about a composition, about a mood, about solving artistic problems. In which color is only one of the components working to solve them. And not value in itself out of context.

              • Arkady Shapoval

Yet TN-matrices of the vast majority of laptops suffer not only from a lack of color, but also from contrast. After normal monitors 2 minutes behind TN matrices, the laptops are eating out the eyes. For processing, it is still much better to have a normal monitor. A lot of people write to me in a personal message, send their “masterpieces” so that I can suggest something, but in 80% it turns out that we look at the photo in completely different ways, because on TN monitors, especially laptop ones, some kind of nourishing 1378 * 768, contrast suffers greatly. As a result, on the TH-matrix it is screwed out all the way, and on a normal device a very fierce mixture of acid shades is obtained. It is by these acidic shades that you can almost immediately determine that a person literally does not see either color or contrast. Also, TN monitors are bad for operation because no matter how you calibrate them, you will still get bad output and this is extremely critical during printing. Believe me, it is very pleasant when prints for clients come, which completely match the monitor color and contrast. And you can't even imagine what comes when they look at TN and then submit it to print. Although, TN has its own plus: we can say that TN-matrices average color and contrast, which at the output gives a picture that hides some of the shortcomings of photos.
And one more story about TN. I have had the same story several times. Wedding photography, demanding clients, everything needs to be finished to perfection, retouching, color. But sometimes it is possible to submit photos at the client's home or over a cup of coffee and his super-laptop with a TH-monitor. Great disappointment comes when doped, tortured with sweat and blood, brought to mind photos on their TH devices do not look at all as they should. The worst thing is that you often don't see the work on the photo - everything turns out to be average, faded, soapy, terrible. But, recently, frankly bad monitors are less and less. And yes, indeed, a good photo will look good everywhere, color and so on are only part of the photo, but these are the parts of the photo. With bad color, a good story is bad, and with a good color, a bad story is bad. You need to strive for the best. Those who cannot aspire in terms of artistic components can express themselves wonderfully in the technical part.

Good day. Thanks to your article, I have long chosen Nikon D80.
Now there is a desire to move to a higher level.
Maybe tell me what options to consider. Not very expensive for the price.
Basically, this is a children's shooting in nature and a studio family.
The lens is 35 and I want 18-200.
The Nikon line is of interest.

    • Arkady Shapoval

D7000 is the most affordable option from this series with normal image quality. Perhaps the d5200-d5500 will also be interesting. Everything else is significantly more expensive.

      • Nika

Thank you very much) Just considering it. D7000. I'm just wondering if the difference with my old man will be noticeable. Is there a point in the transition. Or save more ...

Hello, tell me please, the choice has fallen between Nikon D80 and Canon 40d. What do you advise to take?

    • B. R. P.

Nikon or Canon? Both cameras are good. But you, apparently, have a choice of system. https://radojuva.com/2015/11/nada-shakti/

Hello! Faced a back focus problem on the nikon d80. I thought a problem with the lens, but misses the focus on the three lenses and if you adjust the manual focus, then the sharpness is excellent. Is there a way to fix this problem myself?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Better to service, most difficult.

    • kotofei

If the back focus is global, proportional to the focal focus on all glasses (and this usually happens), then the problem is in the alignment of the carcass. All you need is to fix the AF sensor. Or with a screwdriver (I would prefer this method), or programmatically - on the network you can find the special software that has leaked from the service.
And do not delay with this, the sooner you do it - the less spoiled frames you will have.

Good day! I really want to replace my Nikon D80 (with a Nikkor 18-135 lens) with something better.
In my camera it is embarrassing that it has bad stabilization, it is too wide-angle, I would like something more portrait. I also use Helios 44-4, it does not have an infinity lens, and without autofocus, but makes excellent portraits, but not landscapes. I would like something in between Nikkor 18-135 and Helios 44-4. I thought about 50mm, 1.8…. more options?

    • B. R. P.

Your camera has no stabilization at all, m. meant the lens. For portraits, 50 1,8 will still work, but for landscapes, something wider is just desirable (for an undemanding user, at least the same 18-135).

      Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 with stub, Nikon 50 / 1.8G, Nikon 85 / 1.8G.

Sell all your old cinder block except for the manual and the boot) any with 400go. And half a Chinese for 40ue. This is where happiness will be. And then the Elks and FF. Nikon in the form in which he is now on except and for the money that he is being sold is not viable to compete with anything without a mirror, even with ancient boots.

      • Valery A.

That's what, one friend recently recommended upgrading from a d5100 to a super zoom compact.

      • fake

subjectively / rude / impudent (like you) .. budget d3300 for example, makes the whole crop line from the boot in the picture. The boot in general has the feeling that only ff is dragging from the very first step.
"And then elki and FF" - and then to Mars for the return from elek)))

“Excellent battery, same as in Nikon d200, d300 (s), D90, D700” - and in the d200 review, you write that the battery is terrible and can take 400-500 shots. How is it possible? Read it yourself ...

    • B. R. P.

Do you want to read more carefully? Two hundred eating.

    • Eugene

You know, I have enough battery for max. 80 frames on a 400k, with manual glass. Although Arkady wrote that the charge is enough for 1000+ frames .. I realized that my battery is already out of breath, I will order in Ali.

  • Eugene

Please, tell someone! In the D80 with a manual glass (zenith), doesn't exposure compensation work? I mean, on the camera, you press the “ev + -” button and use the wheel to make a correction. The problem is this .. I make an amendment, for example, in -3, I shoot, but there is no difference by eye, while there is a correction in the exif camera! And by eye it is noticeable only when I do exposure bracketing .. so I can't understand where the dog is buried))

    • Arkady Shapoval

You shoot in the manual exposure setting mode, with manual lenses + it does not work

      • Eugene

Arkady, huge respect to you for a quick response and help in resolving this issue!
P.S. thanks to your review, I will take Yongnuo 35mm.f2 Of those reviews on YouTube that I saw, your most detailed, + review on the site with examples of photos is simply perfect! Thanks for the work !!!

        • Arkady Shapoval

Thank you, if only the yong worked fine, unsubscribe how it will feel on the d80

          • Eugene

Yes, I will definitely unsubscribe on the site in the 35ki review. I will definitely take it in the official store, so that if something happens there will be less trouble. And so, I hope I'm lucky, it was too tempting for glass for that kind of money :)

This is my second SLR. Before that I used the D3100 for about 5 years
I bought this camera in 2017 on olx for 3000 hryvnias (110 $)
There was a complete boxed set and ideal in appearance
Mileage 12345 frames. For two years of use, only positive emotions and 2.5 thousand frames.
The picture quality and color reproduction are simply excellent. Slightly lacking 10MP matrix
The focus is quite accurate, but you basically have to select a point manually for more accurate focusing. Convenient menu
    I use with 50mm f / 1.8G and 18-70mm f / 3.5-4.5G ED
In the second, I lack a bit of sharpness, and so the lens is wonderful for every day

Advise shirik with good aperture and sharpness on this camera?

    • Vladislav

The camera was purchased after reading your review.
      For which many thanks!

The 18-70mm f / 3.5-4.5G ED lens is exactly the same!
The next step I want to try B300 / D300s, have already found an option up to 30 thousand mileage and again .. with a boxed kit for $ 230 -250 $

Hello Arkady! If it does not make it difficult for you, tell me, for family photos (no post-processing, print no more than A4) what to look for from a used Sony a37 or Nikon d80 - they are here on the secondary housing at approximately the same cost with the same mileage. The natural color of the photos is important. Without explanation :).
    Thank you!

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Sony a37 would be preferable.

      • Alexander

Thanks! You have a very nice blog, a lot of interesting things!

      • Alexander

Arkady, and sony a37 or nikon d90?
        Thank you!
PS I do not pester anymore! ;)

  • Vladislav

    Hello Arkady!
The D80 review has the phrase “Nikon D80 has white balance bracketing, flash bracketing, flash combo, which is not in the D90”.
The fact is that the D90 also has it all, in addition there is d-link bracketing, which the D80 does not have. So in terms of bracketing, the D90 will be cooler.
He began to delve into these matters in more detail and found this typo on the functions of the D90.

  • Vladislav

Arkady, another question for you, since he began, as I said, to delve deeper into the intricacies of Nikon settings.
Personally, based on your experience, that you advise you to block using the AE-EL / AF-EL button, there’s a lot of things you can do, I understand that in each situation you need something different, but still, what do you like more?
I just did flash lock (FV) until I found a suitable lock. You will not select OFF there.

    • Valery A.

Not Arkady, but I'll stick it. Not immediately, but I came to the method - using the AE / AF button to focus (AF-on), and half-pressing the shutter button - to block exposure metering (especially in cases of center-weighted and spot metering).

      • Valery A.

Leave - d90 has a separate AF button (how convenient is it?).

        • Michael

D90 does not have it - there is amateur control, as in d80

    • Arkady Shapoval

In each situation differently. I often lock the external flash.
