Nikon 200mm f / 4 NIKKOR-Q review

scheme: 4 elements in 4 groups.
The weight: 630 grams
Filter diameter: 52mm
Number of aperture blades: 6 pieces
Diaphragm: F4.0-F32.0

In the beginning there was 200mm f / 4 Q, then there was 200mm f / 4 AI, then 200mm f / 4 AI-s and 200mm f / 4 AI-s Micro-NIKKOR and at the end our contemporary 200mm Micro-NIKKOR AF-D. Lenses have a slightly different optical design.

Important factor! Although Nikon is famous for the fact that any camera of any time can be attached with a lens of any year of production - this is far from the case. Some modern cameras cannot attach non-AI (Automatic Indexing) lenses.
Nikon lenses before 1977 cannot be used on cameras D90, D80, D70s, D50, D70, D100 without altering the lens or adapter for AI. You can get detailed information here.
But for the owners D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D5000, D5100 good news - on these models you can use lenses from Nikon of all time. True, the lenses of 1963-1977 are unlikely to come across often.

On old Nikon lenses, the aperture values were applied in different colors (white, green, yellow, pink, blue) and, in turn, the strips indicating the depth of field limits had a line color corresponding to the aperture value for such a depth of field. It looks quite interesting and brings liveliness to the gray and black tones of the lenses.

Nikon 200mm f / 4 NIKKOR-Q was released back in 1961. Issued until 1976, enlightenment was added in 1973. At that time, it was a very popular lens among photographers. The lens has an interesting inscription "Nippon Kogaku Japan"

About the picture: no distortion, pretty strong HA on open. An interesting observation - if you set the focus very precisely, then the sharpness is almost the same for F4.0-F5.6, of course, the depth of field increases. Moreover, sharpness is present throughout the field of the frame. The bokeh is excellent, you can judge for yourself by the examples below.

Information about Nikon 200mm f / 4 NIKKOR-Q and its applications for photographers:
1. The lens has a wonderful integrated telescopic hood with a fixing bolt - a great solution, the lens hood is always with you, and with a lens hood the photos in different lighting conditions will be better, and the lens looks better.
2. Lens sharpness - sharpness is normal, considering that it is a telephoto.
3. All the necessary indicators are present. Everything is set manually.
4. Very well shot down, all of iron and glass, not particularly heavy. In general, despite its weight, it is very convenient to use.
5. I consider a serious drawback focus from 3 meters, which makes it very difficult to shoot small objects. For example Jupiter-21A with the same parameters can focus from 1.7 meters.
6. Easy to find 52mm filter. Personally, I lost the cap from this lens and quickly replaced it from my whale 18-55, which is gathering dust on the shelf, since it is also with a diameter of 52mm.
7. Not all models had enlightenment. Is there any enlightenment in the model for this review? It is impossible to determine by indicators. But the front lens shimmers violet.
8. Ability to use on full-frame cameras type Nikon D3. And the lack of vignetting on cropped ones.

I use Nikon 200mm f / 4 NIKKOR-Q on camera without any problems Nikon D40, all settings are manual. How to use manual optics read in this article. On my D90 the the lens refused to mountwhy - I wrote above. Also, do not forget that on a cropped camera, the angle of view will be equal to the angle for the lens of 300mm for 35mm film, so that it “zooms in” quite strongly (4 times for a full frame).

    Conversion:
    1. Removed the ears
    2. I started to unscrew the mount - 5 screws. 4 plucked, the 5th did not give in in any way .. And then the thought - see p.3
    3. I unscrewed the screw securing the aperture adjustment ring - and lo and behold - it unscrews along the thread and the mount does not need to be removed (just like with a similar 135)
    4. Sawing and assembly
    5. If the previous points took about 40 minutes, then the installation of the ears is almost an hour (on the knee with trembling hands)

First impressions on the crop - after something like this for about the same money 135 2.8, you can hardly shoot at 100 ISO. But how nice it is to take it in your hands)
