Nikon 200mm f / 4 NIKKOR-Q review

scheme: 4 elements in 4 groups.
The weight: 630 grams
Filter diameter: 52mm
Number of aperture blades: 6 pieces
Diaphragm: F4.0-F32.0

In the beginning there was 200mm f / 4 Q, then there was 200mm f / 4 AI, then 200mm f / 4 AI-s and 200mm f / 4 AI-s Micro-NIKKOR and at the end our contemporary 200mm Micro-NIKKOR AF-D. Lenses have a slightly different optical design.

Important factor! Although Nikon is famous for the fact that any camera of any time can be attached with a lens of any year of production - this is far from the case. Some modern cameras cannot attach non-AI (Automatic Indexing) lenses.
Nikon lenses before 1977 cannot be used on cameras D90, D80, D70s, D50, D70, D100 without altering the lens or adapter for AI. You can get detailed information here.
But for the owners D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D5000, D5100 good news - on these models you can use lenses from Nikon of all time. True, the lenses of 1963-1977 are unlikely to come across often.

On old Nikon lenses, the aperture values were applied in different colors (white, green, yellow, pink, blue) and, in turn, the strips indicating the depth of field limits had a line color corresponding to the aperture value for such a depth of field. It looks quite interesting and brings liveliness to the gray and black tones of the lenses.

Nikon 200mm f / 4 NIKKOR-Q was released back in 1961. Issued until 1976, enlightenment was added in 1973. At that time, it was a very popular lens among photographers. The lens has an interesting inscription "Nippon Kogaku Japan"

About the picture: no distortion, pretty strong HA on open. An interesting observation - if you set the focus very precisely, then the sharpness is almost the same for F4.0-F5.6, of course, the depth of field increases. Moreover, sharpness is present throughout the field of the frame. The bokeh is excellent, you can judge for yourself by the examples below.

Information about Nikon 200mm f / 4 NIKKOR-Q and its applications for photographers:
1. The lens has a wonderful integrated telescopic hood with a fixing bolt - a great solution, the lens hood is always with you, and with a lens hood the photos in different lighting conditions will be better, and the lens looks better.
2. Lens sharpness - sharpness is normal, considering that it is a telephoto.
3. All the necessary indicators are present. Everything is set manually.
4. Very well shot down, all of iron and glass, not particularly heavy. In general, despite its weight, it is very convenient to use.
5. I consider a serious drawback focus from 3 meters, which makes it very difficult to shoot small objects. For example Jupiter-21A with the same parameters can focus from 1.7 meters.
6. Easy to find 52mm filter. Personally, I lost the cap from this lens and quickly replaced it from my whale 18-55, which is gathering dust on the shelf, since it is also with a diameter of 52mm.
7. Not all models had enlightenment. Is there any enlightenment in the model for this review? It is impossible to determine by indicators. But the front lens shimmers violet.
8. Ability to use on full-frame cameras type Nikon D3. And the lack of vignetting on cropped ones.

I use Nikon 200mm f / 4 NIKKOR-Q on camera without any problems Nikon D40, all settings are manual. How to use manual optics read in this article. On my D90 the the lens refused to mountwhy - I wrote above. Also, do not forget that on a cropped camera, the angle of view will be equal to the angle for the lens of 300mm for 35mm film, so that it “zooms in” quite strongly (4 times for a full frame).

The quality of the optics is high, excellent resolution and contrast, easy. Good quality detailed shooting, panoramas, clear and sharp portraits, pleasant blurring of the background.

Arkady, good afternoon! Firstly, I want to express my great admiration and gratitude for this wonderful site and for your work!
And I ask you for help, I can't choose a lens for my Nikon D5100, which one is better?

    Nikon 200mm f / 4 NIKKOR-Q
    Vivitar 200mm f / 3.5
    Accura Supertel Tc 200mm f / 3.9
    Lentar 180mm f / 3.5

MDF is not decisive, the lens is needed for photo-hunting (reportage “secretive” portrait, for shooting birds / squirrels). I would like to know more about the picture quality.
If you can answer even in a few words, I will be very grateful!

I worked only with Jupiter-21A and Nikkor, for the rest I cannot say anything from personal experience. Nikkor is not bad, Jupiter is heavy.

    • Gennady

For these purposes, at 5100 I use 55-200. Now it can be borrowed for ridiculous money. And a hood is required.

  • Irina

Once again, good afternoon! I thought I was asking a stupid question. You haven't tested these Vivitars and Lentars :-)
I'll try to fix it a bit.
Well, at least you can say: which is better to take: Jupiter 21-A or Nikon 200mm f / 4 NIKKOR-Q?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Native Nikkor is more convenient to use, it is easier.

  • Irina

Thank you so much! I'll take Nikkor :-)

Hfc, please tell me, does the iron "hook" interfere with the installation on the nocon d90, which is on the lens not far from the bayonet? So? Is it possible to saw off or unscrew it?

    Canon 550d be delivered?

    • Alexander

Easily, through the EOS-Nikon F adapter. It is interesting to observe the surprised looks of the uninformed like: “... I don’t understand, do you have Canon or Nikon?”

  • Sv

Got caught in the Internet tsikava storinka
As a matter of fact, the following chronology should be used for this asset:
    1. From 1960 to 1967 (can be finished in 1966), objects were issued at 20 cm. In the first ob'ktivs of 1960 rock the hood is not a small screw. Even in 1960 rock the scale was in feet, already in 1961 it was in meters - it was possible to use it for hours for two rinks and visions. Here between 1961 and 1964, two scales began to be put.
    2. In 1967 (possibly the end of 1966), we started writing 200 mm. The bayonet pochav krіpitisya five gvintikami, turning uvazhchav 20 grams (sphatchu bulo 560).
    3. Here, between 1968 and 1969, 6 leaves were replaced with diaphragms. 7. It became possible to close it up to 32 (replace the previous 22). The ring of the installation with diaphragms from the round-ribbed, became "tooth-shaped". Until now, the scale of the distance was 3 m (10 feet), and became 2 m (7 feet), the applied values were remembered. The circle on which gray was applied from the silver became black. The circle of focus became wider, the volume became larger (630 grams), the three were remembered as geometric dimensions.
    4. Between 1969 and 1972, the writing was changed in a gray color, it changed from “Nippon Kogaku Japan” to “Nikon”. In the constructive, changes are not mentioned. Similarly, between 1969 and 1972, on the front edge, metal metal “squeezed” appeared, plastic materials appeared, writing on them from “Nikkor” to “Nikon” is not a fact, but “new” chicks were shot at once with the components, and not delivering the author, logically, because of the wickedness of the vyrobnik on the object, could remember it on the cry.
    5. Here, between 1972 and 1973, the brand name “NIKKOR-Q” was replaced by “NIKKOR-Q · C” - a way of enlightenment.
    6. Here are between 1973 and 1975. The replacement of 4 elements in 4 groups has become 5 in 5. The active sutta has changed its name of the viglyad, becoming simply called “NIKKOR”. The focusing circle has become gummy, there is a fixed bolt on the blend, the circle with diaphragms has become known as a round prosthesis with a “square” relief. Vaga changed by 100 grams (up to 530), becoming male and short, on the scale of distance the sutta changed intermediate values.

The well-known podilu and judging by the photo of the zaznishny viglyad from the glance, the sequence of point 2 - 580 grams, the maximum diaphragm is curved up to 22, the images are shown in 1966/67 and 1968/69, without education. From point 3 of the second view of the focus and setting of the apertures, as well as the extreme value (in this copy there are 6 sheets and f / 22), in point 1 - write 200 mm. In looking at Ken Rockwell, the fourth point is objectified - it should be seen from the given and the minimum focusing distance, and the maximum values of the closed aperture, do not speak about the call of the Nikon vigil.
Still one, already from 1968/1969 (point three), according to the minimum focusing rate, the program Yupiter-21A is a difference of 30 cm. Too, it was released from 1960 to 1976, then about the first 9 years 3 , and the offensive 9 are already 2 m.

I have a little battered, judging by the serial number he is about 40 years old. Of the 11 lenses that I have now, it has perhaps the most interesting picture, which I personally like the most. It is a pity that the focal is not very convenient for everyday use.

I bought this lens with the installed “dandelion” and converted for Nikon D90 (Nikon 200mm f / 4 NIKKOR-Q). The lens sharpness is excellent. The front and rear lenses glow purple. Easy to focus. I set the shutter speed to 1/500 s. and in short, so as not to smear. Aperture and ISO - according to the situation. “Dandelion” allows you to control the aperture directly from the camera, which is very convenient.
