On my site you can find a review of the lens Jupiter-9 of black color, Lytkarino plant for M42 thread и Jupiter-9 P of white color from cameras with Contax-Kiev mount. By the way, the first Lytkarino Jupiters were also white, which complicates their difference with the Krasnogorsk Jupiters, a review of such an old white specimen can be viewed here.
This review focuses on the lens: white Jupiter-9 Krasnogorsk plantoriginally made for an M39 threaded SLR camera. Jupiter-9 is in the top five the best soviet portrait lenses.
Below shown list of major versions of JUPITER / JUPITER-9:
- JUPITER-9 2/85 AUTOMATIC. In the case for the Kiev-10/15 cameras, the Arsenal plant (Kiev), the Kiev-Avtomat mount
- JUPITER-9 1: 2 F = 8.5cm. In a white case, Krasnogorsk, mount Contact-Kiev
- JUPITER-9 1: 2 F = 8.5cm P. In the white building, Arsenal building (Kiev), Contact-Kiev bayonet mount
- Jupiter-9 1: 2 F = 8,5cm P... In a white case, KMZ, M39 for Zenit cameras
- JUPITER-9 2/85. In a white case, Lytkarinsky, M39 for Zenit cameras
- In the black case of the old type, Lytkarinsky, M42 (no review yet)
- JUPITER-9 2 / 85. In a black case of a new type, Lytkarinsky, M42
- MC JUPITER-9 2/85. In a black case of a new type, Lytkarinsky, with 'MS', M42
Unlike his Lytkarino brother, white Jupiter has a thread under M39 and purple enlightenment. The main difference in the picture is the sharpness already with an open aperture. As mentioned in the review of the black version, Lytkarinsky strongly softit and soap on open diaphragms.
My version has an M42 thread, in fact, all white Jupiter-9 go under M39, if M42 comes across, then it is either redone or with the usual transition ring M39-M42.
All the necessary technical specifications and other important points have been described in review of black Jupiter-9. How to use Jupiter-9 on modern Nikon digital SLR cameras read in the section Soviet optics, and how to use on a Canon system - in the section Old Canon Lenses. Personally, I took all the sample photos for review using the camera Nikon D90 and a KP-42 \ N lensless adapter, while I could not focus on infinity.
Regarding the picture of white Jupiter-9: The photo is already quite sharp, starting from F2.0. But it is not the sharpness you need to chase with this lens. At aperture of 2.8, it seemed too sharp, if it was exactly in focus. For a portrait, such sharpness is already too much, so it is very convenient to get exactly portraits, working at apertures from 2.0 to 2.4. The bokeh is very pleasant, plastic, unobtrusive, although there is a slight ripple in the blur zone. Circles in the out-of-focus area have a slight characteristic increase in luminosity near the edge (ring). Ha quite normal. If you see a not sharp image in the sample photos, these are focusing misses. When working with the lens, it exceeded all expectations, although the first impressions of black version very upset. It is also worth noting that the lens normally holds lateral and even backlight, there is a drop in contrast, but they fit into the acceptable range. Vignetting on my cropped matrix is not noticed. Distortion also does not suffer, and therefore does not distort the image in the photo, which can be used for portraiture.
If you want to purchase any of the Jupiter-9 options, we can help with this - contact the contacts listed in the manual optics section.
Sample photos on Jupiter-9
Almost all photos without processing. Only reduced size and imprinted EXIF data from the camera. I did not always remember the aperture values, therefore the limits are simply indicated. Imagine how Jupiter 9 would show itself in full frame.

Hack and predictor Aviator:
Jupiter 9 in the white version, the Krasnogorsk factory is an ideal portrait lens. You can shoot with it at any aperture, the lens has a small weight and size, a nice focus ring and gives a wonderful picture. Sometimes it claims to be able to compete with Helios-40-2 because of its compactness and ease of handling.

It's a pity I can't add the link it doesn't work ... :-(
Links are added without problems on Radozhiv. Just copy it and paste it into the comment field - nothing complicated.
Arkady, but will this adapter help to install the rangefinder option on the DSLR? Can I take pictures with it the same way as on the Yup-9 with the m-39?
Will not help.

Nothing will help the rangefinder option in reaching infinity - only a rework, and that is, fears of touching the mirror with the rear lens - https://radojuva.com.ua/2012/10/dalnomernaya-optica-na-slr/
They say that some instances of white are very yellow. How serious and disposable is this if I am going to work in RAV?
For someone it is strong, for someone it is weak, in RAW it is possible to correct.
Arkady, hello!
Thanks for the reviews!
Could you give some advice: which lens would you recommend as a portrait portrait on the Canon 5d Mark II?
Thank you in advance for your reply.
From Soviet optics Jupiter-9, Jupiter-37A, Vega-12B, Helios-40 (2)
Arkady, thanks for your prompt reply! Can you tell me, can “Helios-103” 1.8 / 53 be an alternative one (there is simply such a copy in the collection)?
Thanks again.
As far as I know, it is difficult to use it on a digit because of the specific bayonet mount and short working distance.
Helios 103 can be used on mirrorless mirrors
Helios 103 can be used on mirrorless mirrors
And I got Jupiter 9 m39, '59, can you tell me who will go for the alteration ?, I’ve found an article, but I’m definitely not able to http://evtifeev.com/4375-9-nikon.html

good evening
if there is a choice - take Jupiter-37A or Jupiter-9, which one is better to take?
For crop, Jupiter-9 is better, for FF - Jupiter-37A
Good afternoon, thanks for the review. I have been reading your blog for a long time and got a lot of useful information.
The question is, in your opinion, is it worth looking for the Yu-9 for shooting portraits if you have the Yu-37A and G-44-2?
I think you can get by with the two.
I forgot to add a Canon 500D camera i.e. crop 1,6
Arkady, thank you very much for your site and for the wonderful reviews, I have a question for you, which, in your experience and view from a portrait lens, would you recommend:
1. Jupiter-9 is white;
2. Industar 29;
3. Wave 3;
4. Vega-12?
And if you can your favorite portrait lens,
Jupiter 9 would be the best option. My favorite portrait lens is the one I shoot portraits with, now it's Tamron 90 \ 2.8, from manual it is Jupiter-37A.
Thank you Arkady for a quick reply, it was important for me to hear your opinion. there is Jupiter 37A but it’s a bit long on the crop, so I’m looking for something shorter with a beautiful boke, until I choose white Jupiter and I’ll choose the best wave, although I also want 3b kaleinar to really like its appearance.
Still, I just want to choose jupiter9 white and industrial 29, Arkady, could you comment on your choice in the direction of jupiter?
Jupiter is faster and more suitable for portraiture; the Tessar industrial scheme does not always show good bokeh.
Arkady, I ask your advice ... Sergei Elizarov was asked a question about the quality of manual and modern autofocus lenses. The answer was: “Autofocus lenses have picture quality
better than Soviet lenses. Any take what money
enough. The Soviets are good precisely because of their imperfection. " Do you think so too? Simply, reading your articles and Sergey, I came to the conclusion that the Soviet ones are no worse than modern ones except for autofocus. Something I got confused ...
In general, Soviet lenses are worse. Worse in terms of efficiency and immediate image quality. Elizarov remarked very subtly that "the Soviets are good precisely because of their imperfection." Old lenses sometimes attract with their price, interesting design, they can produce excellent results, but nevertheless this equipment is very ancient and sometimes it cannot compete at all with modern monsters of lens construction. Of course, these are my subjective thoughts.
Good afternoon. Arkady, what is better to get for creative shooting on Nikon D90: Jupiter-37a, Jupiter-9 (white), helios-81n?
Arkady good evening. I am reviewing your reviews very much I like them. I would like to know your opinion about Jupiter-8. http://www.deep-life.ru/lens/index.htm. Is the minus lens example true? Thank you very much.
I did not find an example. Jupiter-8 did not use, I can’t say anything sensible.
http://www.deep-life.ru/jupiter-8/index.htm your opinion as a professional is very interesting
Opinion of what?
Arkady, Good afternoon! I have Jupiter-9, I can’t understand what kind of mount! Can you help me?
Hello. Whoever heard about Jupiter 9 (for movie cameras)? Is there a given lens of the Lytkarino factory, the first digits of the number are 720xxxx, can anyone know if the movie jupiters will soften on the open one? Is it worth it to remodel to a digit, or look for white?
Hello, tell me please, Jupiter 9 white on Nikon D90 is suitable with the help of rings M39-M42 and M42 with a lens, and will there be infinity in this case? Thanks in advance
Hello, I understand that I’m late, but I’ll ask Arkady after all: is it worth taking any of the Soviet lenses for portraits on Crop-Nikon, if there is a Nikon 35-70 AF 2,8?
Yes, thank you very much for the reviews, for the detail and patience. Andrei.
You can buy, it's up to you. Lenses recommendations for Nikon can be found here - https://radojuva.com.ua/2011/04/optika-na-nikon/#what-mount
Arkady Shapoval, please tell me if I have a Jupiter-9 optics 2/85 automatic, can I put it on Nikon 5100?
You can not.
Arkady Shapoval, please tell me if I have a Jupiter-9 optics 2/85 automatic, can I put it on Nikon 5100? one more question, if you can put it then how? as far as I understand everything you can do this through the adapter m39
Arkady Shapoval can you please explain why I can’t put the 9U jupiter on the Nikon 5100 through the m39 adapter. On many sites I find information that it can be done.
because in your first message you wrote about the "machine", and not about "A", in detail here - https://radojuva.com.ua/2011/04/optika-na-nikon/#kiev-a-mount
Why does the author write about the white Yu-9 of the Krasnogorsk plant, and in the photo Nikon with the Yu-9 from the rangefinder Kiev, the production of the Arsenal plant?
By the way, I did not meet the Krasnogorsk Yu-9 under the SLR, only the M39 rangefinder.
