On my site you can find a review of the lens Jupiter-9 of black color, Lytkarino plant for M42 thread и Jupiter-9 P of white color from cameras with Contax-Kiev mount. By the way, the first Lytkarino Jupiters were also white, which complicates their difference with the Krasnogorsk Jupiters, a review of such an old white specimen can be viewed here.

View of the white Jupiter-9 on the camera
This review focuses on the lens: white Jupiter-9 Krasnogorsk plantoriginally made for an M39 threaded SLR camera. Jupiter-9 is in the top five the best soviet portrait lenses.
Below shown list of major versions of JUPITER / JUPITER-9:
- JUPITER-9 2/85 AUTOMATIC. In the case for the Kiev-10/15 cameras, the Arsenal plant (Kiev), the Kiev-Avtomat mount
- JUPITER-9 1: 2 F = 8.5cm. In a white case, Krasnogorsk, mount Contact-Kiev
- JUPITER-9 1: 2 F = 8.5cm P. In the white building, Arsenal building (Kiev), Contact-Kiev bayonet mount
- Jupiter-9 1: 2 F = 8,5cm P... In a white case, KMZ, M39 for Zenit cameras
- JUPITER-9 2/85. In a white case, Lytkarinsky, M39 for Zenit cameras
- In the black case of the old type, Lytkarinsky, M42 (no review yet)
- JUPITER-9 2 / 85. In a black case of a new type, Lytkarinsky, M42
- MC JUPITER-9 2/85. In a black case of a new type, Lytkarinsky, with 'MS', M42

Photo on Jupiter-9
Unlike his Lytkarino brother, white Jupiter has a thread under M39 and purple enlightenment. The main difference in the picture is the sharpness already with an open aperture. As mentioned in the review of the black version, Lytkarinsky strongly softit and soap on open diaphragms.

Portrait on Jupiter-9 85mm F2.0
My version has an M42 thread, in fact, all white Jupiter-9 go under M39, if M42 comes across, then it is either redone or with the usual transition ring M39-M42.

Wonderful sharpness on the open aperture of the lens Jupiter-9
All the necessary technical specifications and other important points have been described in review of black Jupiter-9. How to use Jupiter-9 on modern Nikon digital SLR cameras read in the section Soviet optics, and how to use on a Canon system - in the section Old Canon Lenses. Personally, I took all the sample photos for review using the camera Nikon D90 and a KP-42 \ N lensless adapter, while I could not focus on infinity.

Wonderful bokeh on the open aperture of the lens Jupiter-9
Regarding the picture of white Jupiter-9: The photo is already quite sharp, starting from F2.0. But it is not the sharpness you need to chase with this lens. At aperture of 2.8, it seemed too sharp, if it was exactly in focus. For a portrait, such sharpness is already too much, so it is very convenient to get exactly portraits, working at apertures from 2.0 to 2.4. The bokeh is very pleasant, plastic, unobtrusive, although there is a slight ripple in the blur zone. Circles in the out-of-focus area have a slight characteristic increase in luminosity near the edge (ring). Ha quite normal. If you see a not sharp image in the sample photos, these are focusing misses. When working with the lens, it exceeded all expectations, although the first impressions of black version very upset. It is also worth noting that the lens normally holds lateral and even backlight, there is a drop in contrast, but they fit into the acceptable range. Vignetting on my cropped matrix is not noticed. Distortion also does not suffer, and therefore does not distort the image in the photo, which can be used for portraiture.

Small depth of field Jupiter-9
Sample photos on Jupiter-9
Almost all photos without processing. Only reduced size and imprinted EXIF data from the camera. I did not always remember the aperture values, therefore the limits are simply indicated. Imagine how Jupiter 9 would show itself in full frame.

Conclusion:
Jupiter 9 in the white version, the Krasnogorsk factory is an ideal portrait lens. You can shoot with it at any aperture, the lens has a small weight and size, a nice focus ring and gives a wonderful picture. Sometimes it claims to be able to compete with Helios-40-2 because of its compactness and ease of handling.

Good day!
Explain, please, what is the difference between U9 for SLR cameras and U9 for rangefinder Kiev? Will Yu9 for rangefinders work normally on Nikon?
Thank you in advance!
They differ in the bayonet, the optics are the same, they also differ in the minimum focusing distance of 0.8 versus 1.15 for the rangefinder. On Nikon, a copy from a rangefinder camera, even with an adapter, will have a much shorter working focusing distance. This will not affect the picture, but the functionality - yes. This review presents an example from a SLR camera with a thread for M39, the lens is transferred for M42, therefore with an adapter it can reach somewhere up to 3 meters.
Arkady, Good afternoon! I have Jupiter-9, I can’t understand what kind of mount! Can you help me?
Thanks for the speed)))
I want to clarify ... with an adapter can reach somewhere up to 3 meters ... what? minimum focusing distance or maximum? What is the approximate flange distance?
What does the lens mean redone for M42? Just added ring M39-M42?
Thank you in advance)))
The focusing limit will be 2-3 meters, in my examples there is just no opportunity to get infinity, it turns out to take a person up to his waist - but then it is problematic. The minimum focusing distance remains almost unchanged. The working distance is a completely different concept, it does not change just like that, read Soviet optics in my article. You can install the ring, or you can redo it. If you change it, then when using an adapter without a lens on Nikon it will be 2-3 meters, if the ring is M39-M42 then when used on Nikon it will focus up to half a meter.
Sorry, that a lot of questions)))
It’s just possible to install a white rangefinder Yu9 on Nikon, so I want to know whether it is worth bothering with the search for adapters and an approximate end result)))
I advise you to redo the rangefinder option, with adapters there will be a rather narrow range of distances for shooting.
And if there is an adapter Bayonet K to M42 in Pentax Kr, then will there be any restrictions in the range of distances for shooting?
I can’t answer this question, I’ll try to find out from my colleagues.
I have a question:
If you put the M42 adapter with a correcting lens on my Nikon D7000 on this instance of white Jupiter 9 (redone rangefinder), will infinity survive? thanks
If it is converted to M42 with preservation of infinity, then with a lens on Nikon, infinity will also be preserved. If this is just a rangefinder option, then the lens will not save.
Your copy - I bought it from you for Pentax Kr about 2 months ago ... Now I bought a Nikon d7000, and I wonder 0 how it will work on it ... Is it worth buying an M42 adapter with a lens
Most likely they bought from Sasha, I do not sell equipment, only reviews, etc. If it is the lens from the review, then there will be infinity with the lens.
If with a lensless adapter it works somewhere for 2-3 meters, then with the lens it will be possible to focus at infinity.
Good afternoon, I have a canon mark II and I would like to try on it Jupiter 9 for rangefinder cameras, I also have it, there are rings 39 and 42, but accordingly the focus area is about 20 cm at a distance of 50 cm. After reading the comments, found that you can redo this lens, is it possible for canon? and where how and how can I redo it? )
Thank you for the future announcement.
Andrei
Redo for infinity - no way, there was a mistake in the article - fixed.
You can redo it, even redid the 57th year Krasnogorsk from a movie camera with an unknown bayonet mount for Nikon-Kiev, according to tests on the D90 it is slightly inferior to MF 85 / 1,8 nonAi 1968-71.
Hello.
thanks for the review.
read both articles on black and white Ju-9. but my question is a little different: do LZOsovsky and KMZshny Yu-9 differ greatly from each other, if both were made somewhere in 1961, the performance is “white”? Are all those distortions of the black Yu-9th present in the old white Yu-9m of the same LZOS?
and second. you were told that these lenses were redrawn from the famous Zonnar and were produced at 2 factories. about the third information is lost. saw Arsenalovskiy Yu-9 1958th year of release. from the front lens. whether he was an "automatic", etc. - not in the know. but the logo of the plant is uniquely Kiev Arsenal
Maybe they were produced at other factories, I just did not see them and did not hold them in my hands, therefore I limited myself to two “canonical” versions. There are rumors on the Internet that all white people give a good picture, I cannot guarantee how true this is.
thanks. sorry that you are not in the know.
an acquaintance recently gave to use "black". maybe my hands have grown out of the wrong place (everything can be)))), but he and I have the same attitude to this lens. or maybe just a specific instance turned out to be ugly.
only a question: is it necessary to look for “white” CMG (in many reviews for some reason they compare black with white CMG))) or which one is there?
blacks are rather nasty, that's why I wrote about white. I would take what there is, after making a couple of frames on it. In any case, given the age, you need to look at the specimen.
Arkady, I would not say that black is ugly, it's just different, and starting with f4 it produces a solid picture both in plasticity, sharpness and color, and it twists bokeh more adventurously than white (there are both, each is good in its own way)
about the third factory
At the Arsenal plant (Kiev), Jupiter-9 Avtomat was produced. This lens was intended for the Kiev-10 and Kiev-15 SLR cameras with a unique bayonet mount. There was no aperture ring on the lens - the aperture value was set by a disk on the camera body, mechanically connected by a movable lead to the lens aperture
You can’t just put a machine on a DSLR.
And can you tell me what difficulties will arise when remaking Jupiter-9 Automatic under the SLR
Difficulties just arose during the alteration, since it simply cannot be used through an adapter. And it takes a little labor to remake a lens.
Redid the rangefinder Jupiter 9 (1955 KMZ) on the canon EOS. Not converted version can be used on digital cameras such as Sony Neh. According to the drawing, he compared with Samyang 85, Pentacon 135 and Olympus OM tsuiko 50 1,4. The picture of the old white Jupiter is very nice and peculiar. In the bokeh zone, it is similar to the Pentacon, but clearly loses to Olympus. By sharpness loses to Samyang. Nmv is the perfect lens for a woman's portrait. A very interesting lens, I advise you to keep in your arsenal.
I bought Jupiter-9 1959 of release with a red letter P. What, does that mean? I’m photographing on a Nikon D-90 with an adapter ring and a lens, I’m just not overjoyed.
Means "Enlightenment".
Good afternoon! I'll say right away - I'm a beginner. I have available the lens Jupiter-9 white from Kiev-5. As far as I understand, it is a rangefinder option. The mount seems to have a CONTAX-Kiev bayonet - a lock on the tail. Can you tell me if it can be somehow screwed to Canon EOS or is it impossible? Thanks in advance)))
From the rangefinder to the SLR there will be no sense, only macro.
It's a shame, do not tell me, maybe on some forum you can offer an exchange for Jupiter-9 under M42, or is it unlikely that anyone will be interested? I'd love to try it out.
Give it a try. I think there will be people who need such a lens.
How to contact you, I can pick up Jupiter-9 (Kiev-Contax) from you. I have NEX and I was looking for such a lens.
I have such a new glass, Jupiter-9 2/85 automatic sharpness from 1,1 meters begins. If necessary, write….
please tell me how to find out what thread M42 or M39 is on the lens? I have jupiter 9 in black
measure with a ruler, you can make a mistake by eye.
Hello! I put Jupiter9 (white) on the Nikon d90. And he shoots like a macro. Nothing can be done with this?
Most likely you have a rangefinder option. There is nothing special to be done.
Good day to all. I have a white Jupiter-9, 1961, manufactured by the Kiev plant Arsenal. The lens was designed (was) for rangefinder Kiev. With the help of a file, a hacksaw, a screwdriver and some mother, I changed the thread into 42, with infinity, although in principle it is not needed enough10 -15 meters. I use it on Canon. The lens is decent. Beautiful bokeh, sharpness at 2 and 2,8 is good with light software, at 4-5,6 is sufficient. Color rendering is excellent. I tried black Lytkarinsky “MC” -full soap. The difference can be seen immediately, it is surprising how they could screw up such a lens. The disadvantages include the difficulty of focusing, especially at an open aperture.
I had a mirror ju-9 black, Lytkarinsky MS, soft. And recently, quite inexpensively offered to buy a white Krasnogorsk 1960, but rangefinder. It turned out that the lens units are almost the same (the rangefinder just does not have a diaphragm preset ring), and the focusing part is different. I untwisted both lenses into two parts (focusing and lens block) and screwed the white Krasnogorsk lens block into a black mirror focuser. Everything is working. The hybrid looks a bit strange, but now I have a sharp Krasnogorsk Yu-9 at Nikon. With infinity, too, everything is simple - the back of the lens unit is unscrewed a few turns and no adapters with lenses are needed.
Arkady, what is the best lens from your list of Soviet sticks by your standards?
Kaleinar-5N
Arkady, one could add that the lens for the M39 exists in two versions of the M39 with the usual working length (45,2 mm) and Lake M39 (28,8). The latter will focus on the CZK only up to 40 cm, since it is intended for rangefinder cameras. It’s easy to distinguish them; for SLR cameras, the lens has a minimum focal length of 0,85 m and a rangefinder of 1,15 m.
I have a white Yu-9 from a rangefinder Kiev, sawn under nikon. the lens is beyond praise, with the exception of an overly warm image (it corrects in any photo editor without problems, but you have to find fault with something). In my opinion, optically, Kaleinaru 5 is at least as good as it is, and even superior in resistance to backlight.
I got myself such a lens, it’s just perfect for portraits, excellent bokeh, I advise. Your reviews, Arkady, helped me with the choice
Hello Arkady! I read everything carefully, but still I can’t understand. How to visually distinguish a rangefinder option. Could you follow the link and see. I suspect that this is precisely the rangefinder Jupiter. Thanks!
Practically nothing.
