Comparative review of white Jupiter-9

On my site you can find a review of the lens Jupiter-9 of black color, Lytkarino plant for M42 thread и Jupiter-9 P of white color from cameras with Contax-Kiev mount. By the way, the first Lytkarino Jupiters were also white, which complicates their difference with the Krasnogorsk Jupiters, a review of such an old white specimen can be viewed here.

This review focuses on the lens: white Jupiter-9 Krasnogorsk plantoriginally made for an M39 threaded SLR camera. Jupiter-9 is in the top five the best soviet portrait lenses.

Below shown list of major versions of JUPITER / JUPITER-9:

  1. JUPITER-9 2/85 AUTOMATIC. In the case for the Kiev-10/15 cameras, the Arsenal plant (Kiev), the Kiev-Avtomat mount
  2. JUPITER-9 1: 2 F = 8.5cm. In a white case, Krasnogorsk, mount Contact-Kiev
  3. JUPITER-9 1: 2 F = 8.5cm P. In the white building, Arsenal building (Kiev), Contact-Kiev bayonet mount
  4. Jupiter-9 1: 2 F = 8,5cm P... In a white case, KMZ, M39 for Zenit cameras
  5. JUPITER-9 2/85. In a white case, Lytkarinsky, M39 for Zenit cameras
  6. In the black case of the old type, Lytkarinsky, M42 (no review yet)
  7. JUPITER-9 2 / 85. In a black case of a new type, Lytkarinsky, M42
  8. MC JUPITER-9 2/85. In a black case of a new type, Lytkarinsky, with 'MS', M42

Unlike his Lytkarino brother, white Jupiter has a thread under M39 and purple enlightenment. The main difference in the picture is the sharpness already with an open aperture. As mentioned in the review of the black version, Lytkarinsky strongly softit and soap on open diaphragms.

My version has an M42 thread, in fact, all white Jupiter-9 go under M39, if M42 comes across, then it is either redone or with the usual transition ring M39-M42.

Wonderful sharpness on the open aperture of the lens Jupiter-9

Wonderful sharpness on the open aperture of the lens Jupiter-9

All the necessary technical specifications and other important points have been described in review of black Jupiter-9. How to use Jupiter-9 on modern Nikon digital SLR cameras read in the section Soviet optics, and how to use on a Canon system - in the section Old Canon Lenses. Personally, I took all the sample photos for review using the camera Nikon D90 and a KP-42 \ N lensless adapter, while I could not focus on infinity.

Wonderful bokeh on the open aperture of the lens Jupiter-9

Wonderful bokeh on the open aperture of the lens Jupiter-9

Regarding the picture of white Jupiter-9: The photo is already quite sharp, starting from F2.0. But it is not the sharpness you need to chase with this lens. At aperture of 2.8, it seemed too sharp, if it was exactly in focus. For a portrait, such sharpness is already too much, so it is very convenient to get exactly portraits, working at apertures from 2.0 to 2.4. The bokeh is very pleasant, plastic, unobtrusive, although there is a slight ripple in the blur zone. Circles in the out-of-focus area have a slight characteristic increase in luminosity near the edge (ring). Ha quite normal. If you see a not sharp image in the sample photos, these are focusing misses. When working with the lens, it exceeded all expectations, although the first impressions of black version very upset. It is also worth noting that the lens normally holds lateral and even backlight, there is a drop in contrast, but they fit into the acceptable range. Vignetting on my cropped matrix is not noticed. Distortion also does not suffer, and therefore does not distort the image in the photo, which can be used for portraiture.

Almost all photos without processing. Only reduced size and imprinted EXIF data from the camera. I did not always remember the aperture values, therefore the limits are simply indicated. Imagine how Jupiter 9 would show itself in full frame.

Hack and predictor Aviator:

Jupiter 9 in the white version, the Krasnogorsk factory is an ideal portrait lens. You can shoot with it at any aperture, the lens has a small weight and size, a nice focus ring and gives a wonderful picture. Sometimes it claims to be able to compete with Helios-40-2 because of its compactness and ease of handling.

Arkady, change the first link in the review - it refers to the same review, and not to the review of the black Jupiter-9 lens, from the Lytkarino plant for the M42 thread.
Thank you very much for your hard work!

Arkady and where can you find such a not painful expensive Jupiter 9 white for a SLR ... not expensive .. within 5000 rubles ??

I read a lot of admiration from Arkady (Thank you very much for the reviews, Arkady!), I bought a white KMZ “P” 1960. I put on Canon 5D. I clicked a target for pampering, looked in raw, that's what I found. On the open one it is sharp, the outlines are drawn quite clearly, but there is no contrast at all. In focus, light fragments seem to have an aura, black ones become light gray. At f / 2.8 - both sharp and contrasting. Further narrowing of the diaphragm has no effect.
Surprisingly, in raw, the difference between f / 2 and f / 2.8 is huge. In the viewfinder, I DON'T SEE such a big difference between f / 2 and f / 2.8. I even took a recently cleaned Spotmatic (with a bright, large viewfinder), I didn't take pictures, I just looked through the viewfinder - really, gorgeous quality when open! And the same thing, visually I DIDN'T notice a big difference between f / 2 and f / 2.8.
In this regard, I had a theory. Could it be that the image projected by the lens onto the CCD element (which is almost mirrored) is reflected back into the lens, causing multiple internal reflections in the lenses, and back onto the CCD. Which causes a drop in contrast. After all, initially the lens was built for a film, which has an almost matte surface. And how does it work with the mirror surface of a CCD element? Could this be and how to deal with it?
Thanks in advance for your comments. Yours faithfully,
    Alexey

    • Ivan

Have you been doing photography for a long time?)))) Write such nonsense))) the image is mirrored ...))))

A drop in contrast and software on the open is characteristic of many fast lenses
This is due to XA or some other properties of the optics, for example, I have a Nikkor 50 1.4D, on a fully open one the contrast also drops and softens strongly, on 1.6 there is almost nothing of the kind, on 1.8 - everything is generally fine

      • Alexey

Thanks for answers! I apologize if I offended any high professional with my stupid question. In the meantime, I bought a cheap Jupiter 9 under Kontaks, the same year of manufacture as my Krasnogorsk m39, and with a similar serial number. I threw the lens unit, clicked - the “new” one under the contax turned out to be much clearer, sharper, contrasting! I fiddled with the lenses, tossed them back and forth, and it turned out that the front lens of my Krasnogorskiy, apparently, was not native, or defective. It is she who gives a lot of "soap". (looks quite beautiful) The middle and back glues are absolutely equivalent. Also, the color of the “defective” front lens enlightenment is more reddish than violet. In any case, the lenses differ in the color of the coating, despite the almost identical serial numbers (the difference is several dozen). So, I think the seller changed the original battered front lens for a different one from a different Jupiter. And vtyuhal, like everything dear. In short, the front lens was the cause.
Further, I bought a NEW Lytkarinsky MC of 2009 “Made in Russia” at the auction, quite cheaply. Very satisfied! Sharper, more contrasting "white", which I had. (Not as sharp as Canon 85 / 1.8 at f2.0, but close) And no hassle! Go and fotay! A less positive feature (for me!) Of the new Lytkarinsky MC is a more neutral color rendering, in comparison with the “retro” color of whites. That's it.

Alexey, you are absolutely right about re-reflection from the matrix on the inner surfaces of the lenses. If you were interested, then Marumi, for example, introduces a special anti-reflective layer on his filters (of the corresponding price category, of course) to minimize this effect, the so-called DHG technology. Its essence is that it (I quote) “allows you to get rid of parasitic glare, which is the scourge of serious digital cameras. The matrix reflects the rays of light falling on it much more actively than photographic film. The internal mechanics of the lens, lens elements and the light filter itself begin to glare, reflecting the brilliance of the matrix - the beam falls into a "trap". The DHG coating allows the reflected beams to freely "exit" the optical system. ”
The manufacturers of optics, initially “sharpened” for use with matrices, and not film, do the same.
But you said: “filmed worlds”. With regard to the Jupiter-9 lens, this is a completely useless exercise. This lens needs to be tested only on volumetric worlds, or at least shoot the head of a sculpture. The resolution is not important here, in the center it is sufficient at apertures from 2,8 to print 20x30 from the negative, not to mention the matrix. But plastic is a wonderful property of Jupiter-9. But here you need to hit the diaphragm, depending on the plot. I shot a lot for them in Kiev. Then he gave it up. Now I'm thinking about buying it. Yes, more. Focusing is best at the working aperture. This is a Triplet derivative, Zonnar, and it has a fairly noticeable focus point shift from XNUMX to XNUMX aperture. This is partly a consequence of the spheres being specially corrected to allow the lens to be as it is. This must be taken into account when shooting portraits. It is very convenient to work in this mode on cameras from Sony, there, with a working aperture, the brightness of the EVI does not change and there is an electronic magnifier, but that's another story.

      • anonym

Yes, I’ll add another feature that the depth of field of this lens is almost U-shaped, that is, it stretches in space. Behind and in front of the area of sharpness is immediately a steep cliff. So you need to control sharpness with a working aperture and therefore.

I drove on this glass, thanks to Arkady. True, for the sane money, the mirror "Krasnogorets" could not be found. took Latyrkin, but white, under the M39, for DSLRs. By the way, I bought the lens in Ukraine. True, the seller did not want to send to Belarus. had through friends. And only then I thought that it was necessary through Arkady, he would have tested it for a week and then sent it to me)

In general, I received yesterday - a '67 lens, if you count by number. Acceptable sharpness starts at 2.8. True, at this value it is not yet "razor-sharp" (this is already coming from 4.0), but "dermatology" is already being observed. I will try in every possible way to achieve sharpness at 2.0 (vibrating alert, wire ring - how it goes).

He understands like Helios 44-2. It is necessary to lubricate the focusing unit, as somewhere in the middle of the focusing range it goes very tight, which complicates the already laborious focusing process.

The bokenator function is good. He hides the highlights in beautiful circles. I am waiting for spring to test beautifully in the “nature”. In the meantime, we will bring the mechanisms to mind.

Thanks to Arkady for the tip)

  • Oleg

    good day :-)
    Arkady, thanks for your work.
I got such a lens for free, an old supply of good people. probably from the rangefinder: white, M42 thread, 67 years old, inscription in Latin. so, he did not regret the money (35ue) he gave it to a man with his hands and he made it for Nikon with the ability to focus on ∞. This glass does not cease to please me. sharp in the center of the frame with 2, further wider. I shoot on d80. these are such colors, such a picture ... .mm song. I would never have thought that this glass would take on a new life, and what kind.

  • Alexander

I got white Jupiter-9, 68 years old, but on it is a sign of the Lytkarino plant

  • Dima

Good day. You can also add the well-known fact that in some, maybe in all versions of the M39, there is a spacer ring, removing which the working focus area increases somewhere to 5 meters. http://evtifeev.com/5108-9-852-nikon-leica.html
Oleg: Could you tell us what exactly was remade in the lens for Nikon? In order to at least have an idea, with what question should I contact the masters, if it doesn’t work out on my own. thanks
The lens is amazing, I only shoot portraits with it. But something is wrong in my version or I did not understand the logic of setting the aperture - this is extremely inconvenient.

Was Yu9 black Laktyrino brand new, seemed soapy and dull. I sold it. KMZ recently took a white mirror. As someone here above has already noticed that on a single photo of the lens from this review, Arsenalovsky seems to be really depicted. KMZ mirror white looks like this:

A couple of photos from him, but reduced and in some corrected (contrast, colors) but the picture is magical. A bit warm / green like.

I have a black 88g Jupiter exported with ms enlightenment, if I take pictures with non-contrast lighting, the sharpness is excellent even when fully open, I don’t think I should bother looking for a white Jupiter, it’s difficult to find a well-preserved specimen, it’ll be worn out on the lenses, it’s taking time his

    • Alexey

Quite right, I agree completely. My experience confirms this. Finding a "white" in good condition, unlearned by "skillful hands", is almost impossible. For no money! For 50-55 years, who has not delved into them only! I came across a VERY good sharp black Lytkarinsky MC of 2009, for little money (after all, everyone runs after the “white” ones ...). Very satisfied! I go and take pictures for my pleasure.

  • Maria

Hello, and how to distinguish it from Lytkarinsky? thanks

    • Igor

The easiest way: according to the logo of the plant. Type in a search engine: Signs of the enterprises of the optical industry of the USSR. Although we must not forget that there are scammers who can change the little ring with the inscription in order to give out one lens after another, more valuable. I do not know if there are any such cases with Jupiter 9 until I have met.

Arkady, is there a difference between the lenses of the Krasnogorsk and Lytkarinsky factories? I found a white instance of 65, but with Lytkarino, you can’t touch it with your hands, only a photo. So I don’t know whether it’s worth buying?

  • Nikola

Or maybe someone will help with the alteration of white Jupiter 9 (contax rf rangefinder) to Nikon F mount with infinity ?? in Ukraine
    mail epson@bigmir.net

    • Rodin

This is not difficult! You can easily remodel at home, you need a hacksaw for metal, a couple of files - large and thin. You also need an M42 macro ring and a good ruler. A good glue such as epoxy is desirable. Time takes half a day, without tool norms. Instructions are available online. Search - I have found.

  • Boris

I now have several Jupiters-9. Kmz and Lytkarino. Black, 1960s were varnished. The best according to my tests - Lytkarinsky 1965, 1966 white. Kmz will not say that it is something better (if we take white and lacquered black). But very good ones in 1961, 1959 ... As for the late black m-42s, I will say that they were not impressed ... even the ms version.

Why didn't I find a photo of the lens itself in your review? I still don't understand if you tested barrel or cylindrical (elongated). You yourself wrote that there are a lot of Y9 varieties. By the way, I have a black M42 LZOS 1976 as a barrel with a focus ring like the G44 from “Start” (in the form of a camomile gear, see the attached photo). As I understand it, you have not tested this? What can you tell us about him? Thanks.

  • Alexander

Recently I bought a white Krasnogorsk factory Jupiter9. The lens was originally a range finder of 60 years. According to the former owner, the lens was sawn under the M42 and replaced the back of the lens. Having adjusted it under my Nikon, I achieved infinity. I post one of the test photos.

I had three versions of Jupiter-9 for SLR cameras: regular, export and MS
But since I don’t like zonnars, not a single lens has taken root
However, I recently tested white Jupiter 9 for rangefinder cameras - export and released in 1963
    This is a thing
This is what our country could be proud of. What can and should be removed now. In general, a classic of the portrait genre
