Overview of Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50

Industar-50-2 and Industar-50-2 are one and the same lens with different spellings of the name. At the end of the review, in the supplement, the differences between lenses with different spellings of the name are indicated.

Industar 50-2 Lens Overview

Industar 50-2 Lens Overview

TTX Industar-50-2 (Industar-50-2)
Focal length: 50 mm
Diaphragm: F3.5-F16
Number of aperture blades: 7 pieces
Thread: M42
The weight: 70gram
Optical design: 4 lenses in 3 groups (4-lens enlightened anastigmatis). The circuit is similar to Tessar lenses.
Filter Diameter: 35mm (there are also 33.5mm lenses)

Of course, after you see the lens in reality, it turns out that it is much smaller than it seems in the pictures. Industar-50-2 - very light and compact lens, I can’t even believe that in those far times they could make such small lenses. I even got the impression that Industar-50-2 pulled out of the camera of some sophisticated modern mobile smartphone.

But its size doesn’t stop the Industar-50-2 from taking great pictures. Industar-50-2 is a medium aperture... Its maximum F-number is only F / 3.5. For comparison, an aperture of F / 3.5 is 3 times 'darker' beyond F / 2.0, which is available with a number of lenses, such as MS Helios-44m-7 2 / 58

General useful information about Industar-50-2:

  1. The lens is small. Industar-50-2 can always be taken with you. It fits comfortably in your pocket.
  2. Little weight. On a hike he will not create excess weight. And with such a tiny lens, any heavy SLR camera becomes an order of magnitude lighter than other lenses.
  3. Cheap. It is unlikely that one can now find a cheaper Soviet-era lens. You can not be afraid to damage it, lose it, get it dirty - which means you can always take it with you to the most extreme conditions. Buy Industar-50-2 can be approximately 10 cu
  4. Excellent sharpness. Sharpness allows you to use the lens starting at F3.5 aperture. The sharpness of the lens is due to its optical design. The circuit was copied from brand lenses Carl Zeiss Tessar... The Tessars are also referred to as the 'Eagle Eye' for their excellent resolution performance. By the way, you can read a review of such a Tessara - Carl Zeiss Jena DDR Tessar 2.8 / 50
  5. The lens has all the necessary indicators: distance, aperture, depth of field. Moreover, the aperture indicators are duplicated twice, which is rare.
  6. Due to the small size of the lens, it is quite difficult for him to find the front cover. If not, you can use the hollow (usually white) cover from the back lens of the lenses of modern Nikon, Canon lenses, etc.
Dual aperture

Dual aperture scale. The lens has two rows of numbers for iris control.

Image quality:

The lens is almost completely fixed HA. Distortion is very small, not very different from other fifty dollars. Of course, aperture fails a little, but the Tessar scheme does not allow particularly fast lenses. A characteristic feature of Industar-50-2 is its ability to twist bokeh, this can be seen in the examples of photographs. What does it twist at the level of Helios-81n. The contrast of the lens is satisfactory. Backlight holds normally. In general, the picture on Industar-50-2 is pleasantly different for the better from the whale lenses that come with the new digital cameras.

View of the Industar-50-2 lens when focusing on MDF

Focus ring Industar-50-2 rotates approximately 320 degrees, which makes manual focusing very smooth and enjoyable. When focusing, the trunk of the lens lengthens by about one centimeter, while focusing front lens rotates. The depth of field scale is indicated for aperture values of F / 3.5, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16. Compared to other fifty dollars, Industar-50-2 a rather large depth of field at F / 3.5 (seen in the picture above).

Industar-50-2 with a native front cover

Industar-50-2 with native ZENIT front cover

But the lens aperture control ring is quite inconvenient. It is located in front of the lens. To see what aperture value is set, you need flip the lens front lens to yourself. Iris control is smooth, without fixed values - you can set any intermediate value of the F number from 3.5 to 16.0. When focusing, the aperture control ring is very, very rarely touched. The lens aperture blades have 7 pieces, they create the usual 'nuts' in the out-of-focus area in bright light sources.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.
  3. CANON M: For cameras with Canon EF-M mount need adapter M42-Canon M, it can be found at this link.
  4. CANON R and RF-S: For cameras with Canon RF mount need adapter M42-Canon R, it can be found at this link.
  5. Nikon 1: For cameras Nikon 1 Series need adapter M42-Nikon 1, you can find it at this link.
  6. Nikon Z: For cameras Nikon Z series (FX/DX) need an adapter M42-Nikon Z, it can be found at this link.
  7. FUJIFILM X: For cameras with mount X need an M42-Fuji X adapter, you can find it at this link.
  8. FUJIFILM GFX: For medium format cameras G-mount need M42-Fuji GFX adapter, you can find it at this link.
  9. SAMSUNG: For cameras with NX mount, you need an M42-Samsung NX adapter, you can find it at this link. There are no adapters for the NX mini camera yet.
  10. PENTAX: For Q-mount cameras, you need an M42-Pentax Q adapter, you can find it at this link.
  11. SIGMA / PANASONIC / LEICA: For cameras with L mount you need an M42-Leica L adapter, you can find it at this link.
  12. LEICA: For cameras with a bayonet mount Leica M need adapter M42-L / M, you can find it at this link.

Addition

I recently purchased INDUSTRAR-50-2 3,5 / 50 (the name is written in Cyrillic, serial number # 7457498), which differs very little from Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50 (from this review, serial number # 80126529). The differences are miniature:

  • INDUSTR-50-2 3,5 / 50 has vertical green lines to indicate the focusing distance. During focusing, the frame rim extends forward, vertical lines allow you to accurately determine the focusing distance.
  • INDUSTRAR-50-2 3,5 / 50 has an older KMZ factory logo with an arrow at the end of a stylized beam.
  • different spelling of the name: INDUSTR-50-2 and INDUSTAR-50-2

The differences are clearly shown below:

Personal experience

Modern cameras look very funny with such a small lens, some people even ask what kind of bayonet cap I have. Many photographers do not attach any importance to the capabilities of the Industar-50-2 lens, but with its help you can really get great photos. Results

Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50 is very compact and contented cutting half a ruble, which allows you to use it for a number of standard photo tasks. From the big conclusions, this small lens can simply be arrogant :)

  • anonym

the lens is just some kind of unrealistic, such photos on whale optics have never been obtained, to shoot only in M mode on the D3100, did not use an adapter with a chip, only with glass. Amazing purchase for 500 rubles. given the quality of the photo. It’s harsh, it’s hard to twist the diaphragm, but it's worth it.

  • CHIM

I bought this lens, to be honest, I was not impressed, on the open aperture on the right side of the soap that disappears only on the F-8. But on the other hand, it became excellent on the broken Kenon 35-80, now I have this lens has auto focus + made it possible to extend the lens, macro rings are not needed if it were not for the soap on the side, UH, and it is lying on the shelf. Helios 44-2 is much brighter, but unfortunately you cannot do auto focus.

  • Jury

I tested two of these lenses (1982) on a Nikon 5100 using a lensless adapter ring, after removing the stop screws from the barrel that limit focusing to infinity. On an open aperture, the image quality of distant objects can be characterized as very mediocre, and in one of these lenses the left side of the frame is much worse in sharpness than the right side, while in the other instance it is vice versa. Aperture down to a value of “8” produces a good image, although it does not equalize the sharpness of the worst edge with that of the best. Further aperture will degrade image quality. Focusing is difficult due to the small relative aperture, but you can raise the mirror and use the monitor to focus.

  • Lavr kosnik

Most likely I'm not writing in the subject (sorry in advance). Can anyone tell me why I have a 50-2 in Industar after assembly with only one adjustment ring - it clamps the diaphragm. Those. it somewhere wedges or clamps after tightening the lens unit with the back ring. I put it together with two adjustments - everything works. Can not understand. Thanks in advance.

    • zengarden

So you yourself answered your question. Some part of the lens block due to lack of sufficient space (without one ring) rests on the diaphragm mechanism and presses it. I had this on some of the old Soviet lenses.

  • Leonid

Hello Arkady! Happy New Year!!! Do not tell me, the Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50 lens is compatible with the Zenit-12XP camera? The thread there is the same, but there may be nuances. I think that most likely I should do it, but I would like to know your opinion.

  • Al

Gentlemen, question ... The Chinese offer filters here (http://ali.pub/39pbyo) and cannot answer which thread pitch. As I understand it, ø35.5 by 0.5 should be. Help, is the thread pitch correct there? How much worse will it be if I pump another CPL filter on the Industar 50-2?

    • Michael

if my memory serves me, the thread for the filters there is plastic. If the step does not match, the filter simply will not wind up to the end and stick, there is no crime, you can remove it.

      • Alexey

In Soviet lenses, there were only plastic caps)))
Metal thread for filters, as expected.
The question is different: the front lens rotates, the threaded ring for the filter simultaneously controls the diaphragm - what other polarizer is there ?! How to twist it? And most importantly - nakuya .. and so there is no aperture.

        • Michael

There was plastic too. Using the Polar is inconvenient, but possible. Using a polarizer for aperture ratio has a weak relationship, or rather no, it just eats up a step, that's okay

        • Novel

By the way, yes. The polarik reduces the luminous flux, but does not affect the aperture ratio - this is a design feature of the lens.

        • Al

I’m still a pervert, and I’ll wrap up another hood. Sorry.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

My copy is written in Cyrillic, but the icon is like yours from Latin and there are no green lines.

  • anonym

I do not want to praise you, but the description is made with a good sense of humor) Good luck to you!

  • Alex

yes, great glass. I have already 196X release. silver, not black yet)

    • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

it means you have an industar 50 (no deuce) (as far as I remember, the industrial 50-2 was no longer white - only different types of black)).

      • Alexey

I-50 white is a M39 thread and a working length of 45,2 (for vigilant and early zeniths).

  • Valery

Not only great photos can be taken by Industar, but also excellent video in 4K quality !!!)

    • Vladimir Lvov

      Nothing sse ... Cool !!!
Today I sold exactly such a lens, the export version of 1979 in perfect condition, and an hour later I bought exactly such a 1972 year without any signs of use.
He’s got a great macro with rings

      • Vladimir Lvov

I was mistaken for a few years with the year :): not in 1972, but in 1981

    • Iskander

This is a joke. 5D Mark III does not shoot in 4K.

  • Alexander

Good afternoon, and that this lens does not transmit the aperture value to the camera ??
With the adapter, he ideally sat on the Nikon d300, but there was no aperture control (((

    • Rodion

I wonder why he is obliged to do this in your opinion?))))

      • Alexey

Probably with the help of "... and some mother ..."))))))

    • Osh

I would understand it if such a question was asked by the owner of, say, D3100, who is taking the first steps ... It seems to me that the D300 is bought only by those who specifically know why they need such a camera, and they are not new to photography for a long time.

      • Valery A.

Don’t worry, and owners of 800-k sometimes ask something like that.

      • Pokemon

        D300 costs a penny on Avito, like 7D, like 5D, like 1Ds / 1D, like D7000.
In what condition they will be for this money ... well, it's as lucky and depends on the previous owners.

        • Pokemon

I’m saying that it’s not a problem now to buy a camera that was good three hundred years ago, when Puten just came to power.

          • Osh

Well, not so pennilesses, if a camera with a relatively low mileage (not 200 K), then they want normal money for it, since it’s 2.5-3 times more than the same 3100 with whale glass, which for a beginner in business, the photo definitely preferable in my opinion.

            • Michael

A newcomer buys a new one, and she, even an amateur one, is more expensive than these pro mastodons. And $ 200 is, however, pennies. Forgot how much a good camera used to cost ...

      • Alexander

shouted ... Do you think I am a specialist in old optics? I have helios and it works great with the camera, but this one doesn't. Later, examining in detail the design objectively, I saw the absence of a lever responsible for interacting with the camera.
And as for the "beginner" - see here
        https://www.instagram.com/konrad_23rus/

  • Alexander

Today I tried to shoot with this device. In short - into the closet. Everything is inconvenient: focusing, changing the aperture values, caps, and finally, removing and putting on it is inconvenient, not to mention the fact that it does not transmit any values to the camera.
It was not for nothing that at one time it cost - 7 rubles, and the same Helios 81N together with the Kiev 20 camera cost 400 rubles.

    • Alexey

Helios-81N has a fully compatible Nikon mount, and this Industar thread.
What are the "levers" ?? What the fuck is “transferring values” ?? What did you smoke ??
      Teach materiel, bread ...

  • RussTamblyn

I can not find information about the differences depending on the year of release. I read somewhere that this lens was released before 86. But I bought a 87th sample, like new. Lenses without enlightenment, in general, that confused. In all the photographs he is depicted with purple enlightenment. I bought a Chinese fake?

    • Rodion

Rather, it's just a dull amber or light blue enlightenment.

    • Michael

No, I also had without enlightenment. What year i don't know

    • Alexey

Then the Chinese have not faked anything, but only sparrows in the fields were shot))))))
      Learn the story.

  • Sergei

Good day, guys, please tell me, I bought this “Industar-50-2 50mm F3.5 lens for M42 with lens adapter” for nikon d3200, one moment in LiveView mode, for simple focusing, the shutter is activated for a long time, and through the video finder instantly in the same settings :( how to overcome this jamb? :(

    • Dmitry

This is not a jamb, this is how the camera works, and it is with any lens.
What happens when you shoot through the optical viewfinder:

Raised the mirror -> The shutter worked -> lowered the mirror.

What happens when you shoot through LiveView (the mirror is up there and the shutter is open):

Closed the shutter -> Lowered the mirror -> Exit LiveView -> Measured the exposure and focused -> Raised the mirror -> The shutter was activated -> lowered the mirror -> Raised the mirror and opened the shutter again (= returned to LiveView).

Where do you think it will be faster and where it will be slower?

      • BB

Focusing takes place directly in lifeview, at the expense of exposure metering - I also doubt it.
Well, there is a single unit of mechanics, yes. That is, the mechanism needs to do a full cycle so that the shutter works. Some higher-level cameras have a separate mirror and shutter drive.

    • Igor

Yes, it’s exactly on your camera, as they wrote above, there is nothing to be done. On modern DSLRs, the mirror remains stationary in LV, and only the shutter is lowered.

  • Sergei

Guys: Dmitry, BB, Igor; Thank you more :)

  • Roma

Which adapter to choose for olympus pen ft? Or advise another compact inexpensive lens.

  • Dmitriy

I purchased such a lens on occasion, the distance scale is white, number 7132730.
The lens is sharp, but there was no infinity on the Canon 650D. the removal of one alignment ring helped.

  • Atanas

The question (if it's stupid - sorry) is it possible to shoot the Milky Way with Industar?

  • Olga

Please tell me which adapter you used on the Nikon D90? I am new to this business. Thanks for the answer.

    • Michael

M42-Nikon F. The article shows the adapters for cameras

    • KalekseyG

There will be no infinity, it is necessary to disassemble and complete. It's easy

  • notapic

    Chic fifty dollars.
From the pros: convenient focusing, size, weight, strength, sharpness, work in back and side light is no worse than modern optics
Of the minuses: there is no aperture pusher, inconvenient aperture control, aperture 3.5 (on I-61 2.8), weak XA on open, barely noticeable software on open in the back, visible only with crop 1 to 1, weak macro without rings.
Definitely recommend it is very cheap at flea markets. Best suited for macro with rings, on the crop you can shoot decent portraits.

    • Alexander

Its few pluses (and there are exactly 2 of them - size and sharpness) negate the extremely inconvenient aperture control and the difficult use of light filters. Good work in the backlight made me laugh)). There are no such Soviet lenses that would behave in the opposite way in the same way as modern ones. I had several of these Indians, I sold everything without the slightest regret.

  • Mikola

:) I bought a lens in a transparent package but there is no cap, how to find it ... .. :( To leave the lens on the camera

    • Sergei

There is an adapter for aliexpress from 35.5mm to 37, then from 37 anywhere, and you can use any cover, you can buy 37 on Ali there right away or adapt everything to one cover.

  • koba

A very interesting little thing - well-known among bloggers Ken Wheeler published the second version of the Fujifilm camera manual he wrote, where he included a list of recommended lenses compiled by himself, and among these really excellent lenses he placed the Helios 44-2 and this industry, as the most “artistic ”, Without discount prices for them. Personally, I don't like this lens, unlike Helios, which I used all my childhood.

    • Rodion

This lens is good, but I don't like it psychologically - it's too simple, unsightly, ugly, massive. His father - Industar-22 - especially for Zenit / Zenit-S cameras - on the contrary, is aesthetically pleasing and I liked taking pictures more. Although the picture is hardly much different from them.

      • koba

Thanks for the information, I'll try sometime, by the way, in China it is in excellent condition and costs $ 50.

        • B. R. P.

Oh and the prices. We have UAH 100 -150, take it - I don't want to.

  • Sasha

Hello, industrial, I recommend buying canon cameras through an EOS-M42 adapter, I use it for family photos in nature, and I take it on a trip with a width, in general, on the lung, and aperture 3.5 does not bother IMHO, And when buying from hand you always need to check the lens, or ask for test shots. On Nikon I would buy Helios 81N. IMHO. Carcass crop factor

  • Sasha

    Big greetings to Arkady Shapoval.

  • Sasha

Interestingly, if you connect two industrial 50-2 front lenses and put on the camera, you can
    so shoot macro?

    • Rodion

Can. You can connect it as you like - the lens will act as a macro attachment. But in the case of the two Industries, there will be a strong vignette or blackness around the edges. It is necessary to make sure that the rear lens has more FR (135 mm), and the front lens has about 50 mm. Then it will be fine. For example, if you combine Jupiter 11 and Helios 44, you can achieve good macro resolution.
