Overview of Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50

Industar-50-2 and Industar-50-2 are one and the same lens with different spellings of the name. At the end of the review, in the supplement, the differences between lenses with different spellings of the name are indicated.

Industar 50-2 Lens Overview

Industar 50-2 Lens Overview

TTX Industar-50-2 (Industar-50-2)
Focal length: 50 mm
Diaphragm: F3.5-F16
Number of aperture blades: 7 pieces
Thread: M42
The weight: 70gram
Optical design: 4 lenses in 3 groups (4-lens enlightened anastigmatis). The circuit is similar to Tessar lenses.
Filter Diameter: 35mm (there are also 33.5mm lenses)

Of course, after you see the lens in reality, it turns out that it is much smaller than it seems in the pictures. Industar-50-2 - very light and compact lens, I can’t even believe that in those far times they could make such small lenses. I even got the impression that Industar-50-2 pulled out of the camera of some sophisticated modern mobile smartphone.

But its size doesn’t stop the Industar-50-2 from taking great pictures. Industar-50-2 is a medium aperture... Its maximum F-number is only F / 3.5. For comparison, an aperture of F / 3.5 is 3 times 'darker' beyond F / 2.0, which is available with a number of lenses, such as MS Helios-44m-7 2 / 58

General useful information about Industar-50-2:

  1. The lens is small. Industar-50-2 can always be taken with you. It fits comfortably in your pocket.
  2. Little weight. On a hike he will not create excess weight. And with such a tiny lens, any heavy SLR camera becomes an order of magnitude lighter than other lenses.
  3. Cheap. It is unlikely that one can now find a cheaper Soviet-era lens. You can not be afraid to damage it, lose it, get it dirty - which means you can always take it with you to the most extreme conditions. Buy Industar-50-2 can be approximately 10 cu
  4. Excellent sharpness. Sharpness allows you to use the lens starting at F3.5 aperture. The sharpness of the lens is due to its optical design. The circuit was copied from brand lenses Carl Zeiss Tessar... The Tessars are also referred to as the 'Eagle Eye' for their excellent resolution performance. By the way, you can read a review of such a Tessara - Carl Zeiss Jena DDR Tessar 2.8 / 50
  5. The lens has all the necessary indicators: distance, aperture, depth of field. Moreover, the aperture indicators are duplicated twice, which is rare.
  6. Due to the small size of the lens, it is quite difficult for him to find the front cover. If not, you can use the hollow (usually white) cover from the back lens of the lenses of modern Nikon, Canon lenses, etc.
Dual aperture

Dual aperture scale. The lens has two rows of numbers for iris control.

Image quality:

The lens is almost completely fixed HA. Distortion is very small, not very different from other fifty dollars. Of course, aperture fails a little, but the Tessar scheme does not allow particularly fast lenses. A characteristic feature of Industar-50-2 is its ability to twist bokeh, this can be seen in the examples of photographs. What does it twist at the level of Helios-81n. The contrast of the lens is satisfactory. Backlight holds normally. In general, the picture on Industar-50-2 is pleasantly different for the better from the whale lenses that come with the new digital cameras.

Focus ring Industar-50-2 rotates approximately 320 degrees, which makes manual focusing very smooth and enjoyable. When focusing, the trunk of the lens lengthens by about one centimeter, while focusing front lens rotates. The depth of field scale is indicated for aperture values of F / 3.5, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16. Compared to other fifty dollars, Industar-50-2 a rather large depth of field at F / 3.5 (seen in the picture above).

Industar-50-2 with a native front cover

Industar-50-2 with native ZENIT front cover

But the lens aperture control ring is quite inconvenient. It is located in front of the lens. To see what aperture value is set, you need flip the lens front lens to yourself. Iris control is smooth, without fixed values - you can set any intermediate value of the F number from 3.5 to 16.0. When focusing, the aperture control ring is very, very rarely touched. The lens aperture blades have 7 pieces, they create the usual 'nuts' in the out-of-focus area in bright light sources.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.
  3. CANON M: For cameras with Canon EF-M mount need adapter M42-Canon M, it can be found at this link.
  4. CANON R and RF-S: For cameras with Canon RF mount need adapter M42-Canon R, it can be found at this link.
  5. Nikon 1: For cameras Nikon 1 Series need adapter M42-Nikon 1, you can find it at this link.
  6. Nikon Z: For cameras Nikon Z series (FX/DX) need an adapter M42-Nikon Z, it can be found at this link.

Addition

I recently purchased INDUSTRAR-50-2 3,5 / 50 (the name is written in Cyrillic, serial number # 7457498), which differs very little from Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50 (from this review, serial number # 80126529). The differences are miniature:

  • INDUSTR-50-2 3,5 / 50 has vertical green lines to indicate the focusing distance. During focusing, the frame rim extends forward, vertical lines allow you to accurately determine the focusing distance.
  • INDUSTRAR-50-2 3,5 / 50 has an older KMZ factory logo with an arrow at the end of a stylized beam.
  • different spelling of the name: INDUSTR-50-2 and INDUSTAR-50-2

The differences are clearly shown below:

Personal experience

Modern cameras look very funny with such a small lens, some people even ask what kind of bayonet cap I have. Many photographers do not attach any importance to the capabilities of the Industar-50-2 lens, but with its help you can really get great photos. If you are interested in this lens and you want to purchase it, then contact us using the contacts from the manual optics section.

Results

Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50 is very compact and contented cutting half a ruble, which allows you to use it for a number of standard photo tasks. From the big conclusions, this small lens can simply be arrogant :)

  • Andrey Pavlovich

Good day! Thank you, Arkady for your reviews, many moments seemed very interesting. If you allow me - 2 questions:
    - Everything. what is written about "Industar - 50" can be attributed to the lens with the same name, but in a retractable frame (ie optical design and quality of work)? I want to try it with Nikon of the younger line for macro photography and, since the flange allows, and the frame is retractable, then for outdoor shooting, so as not to carry a heavy Nikon 3,5 / 16-85 with me for example on fishing;
    - If I understand correctly the description of the adapter-adapter for old Soviet lenses when used on D5100 in “A” mode
http://www.fotorox.ru/adapter-m39-nikon.php, autofocus will work in trap mode, and all other D5100 automation will be inactive.
I would be grateful for the answer, as always qualified and written in good language.

    • Arkady Shapoval

For the focus trap, you need an adapter with a chip. Industar-50 is almost the same lens.

  • Sergei

hello tell me, is there a difference between

    Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50 and Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50

    • Lynx

      No

  • Robot1524

Comrades, no one tried to remake this lens to infinity?

    • Lynx

      why did you try?
      redid.

  • anonym

Hello. I don’t understand, in order to photograph an infinity adapter with a lens, you need to buy or redo it.

    • Arkady Shapoval

First write, for which camera do you buy it?

  • anonym

    Hello!
Is it worth buying this lens if there is a Nikor 18-55 3.5 ??? Thanks! That is, are there any advantages?

    Nikon D3100 Camera

  • harry

I give some info, maybe someone will come in handy: as a front cover on Industar 50-2, the lid of a jar of AMT-Brewer's Yeast with Sulfur (100 tablets of 0.5 g each), produced by ODO Amateg, Borisov, was perfect. Belarus. Surely, other food supplements / vitamins / preparations are sold in such jars ... I have even painted this cap black - with paint from a can ;-)
PS Thanks for the review and reviews, I read it, I bought myself one :-)

  • Olya

tell me what is better industrial 50-2 3,5 / 50 or helios 44-2

    • fedot

take helios. aperture more and the picture is more interesting.

    • Sergei

Industar - sharp - soapy helios, depending on what you need. the glasses have a fundamentally different pattern.

    • Valery

Generally, Helios-44 was created as a portrait - a soft and juicy image. Resolution (center / edge) 38/20 lines / mm. For some reason, Wikipedia gives the same permission for the I-50, so I was not too lazy - I found passports for 2 pieces, and it says 48/35 in one and 52/38 in the other ... And the result is completely different: the same the group was filmed by Helios and I-50 - so in the first picture you cannot make out the faces, but in the second they are quite recognizable. Well, who needs a portrait in which all skin defects are visible? And who needs a picture of a group where you can't make out a face? So everyone is better in their place. The trotter is in a carriage, and the bityug is in a draft cart ...

  • anonym

Good day! Please help, I have a canon 40d, which adapter is needed for this lens?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      M42-Canon EOS.

  • Dmitriy

I got such a lens, outwardly, ideally, with covers, a case, and even a passport is included there. I screwed it through the adapter to the kenon 500D. And here's the thing - in the center the lens gives good sharpness (I photographed the world - in the center it turned out sharper than the whale), but in the corners, especially on the right, the sharpness drops very much. Does he have this or do I have a defective / damaged lens?

    • Lynx

      rather defective.
But we must take into account that in general such lenses often suffer from a drop in sharpness in the corners

  • Eugene

Good day! Also, Industar-50-2 3.5 / 50 has differences in the form of a filter diameter: 35,5 and 33,5 mm. and accordingly the different diameter of the diaphragm ring, so the native plastic hood from the first does not fit the second!

  • Ivan

Has gained! remade to infinity, the picture is normal ... The question is - has anyone ever had a case when grease from the thread (behind the focuser thread is open) got into the camera? Cyanite grease (most likely). The grease is thick enough, but still ... ..

    • anonym

But how did you redo it? I have such a dust ..

    • anonym

      Do not cyanite! :) TsIATIM-201

  • Ivan

Yes, the search turned out)) by the way, I’ve shot it several times already .. everything’s normal, the mirror doesn’t cling, the grease doesn’t fall off ..) there’s a lot of information on alterations in the internet .. The ring is simply rearranged and everything works

    • Alexander

And another shot with an Industar 50-2 lens, showing sharpness at infinity:

  • Alexander

No. A simple rearrangement of the adjusting ring to achieve focus at infinity will not work! I saw this way of “modification” - bluff! For infinity to appear, the lens unit must be “drowned”, ie. bring it closer to the plane of the matrix. This is done by sampling (deepening) the footprint. To do this, a flat file is taken and uniform circular movements are made with the end part (opposite side of the handle). Dexterity appears after 5 circular uniform movements. Shake out the sawdust (in no case blow - we take care of our eyes)! Periodically install the lens unit to control infinity. As soon as the sharpness appears when setting the scale to the beginning of the “infinity” icon, stop “sawing”. Jumping beyond infinity is not desirable, but it is not prohibited either. You need to find the shabaibs that are suitable in thickness to put under the nut. The diaphragm will not be adjustable - you will understand why. You must first set the desired value. I set the maximum - f3,5 :) Nikon D3300 + adapter ring М42-> NikonF + Industar 50-2 (modified)

    • KalekseyG

infinity very easily appears (moreover, with overrun) with a thin ring, two alignment ones stopped back and all the norms

      • Alexander

When installing Industar-50 P on the Nikon D3300, infinity appeared immediately, without any additional settings. I just installed the adapter rings M39-M42 further M42-NikonF and removed the adjustment rings.

    • Valentine

I got infinity (for crop) as follows:
      1) Unscrew the large nut with the upper jaws of the caliper. We take out the lens block. We remove the adjustment rings from the front under the back large nut.
      2) Slightly untwist the lens block at the junction of the front and rear, unscrewing the pre-fixing bolt. I spun about 1,5 turns so that nothing dangled.
In principle, this option is the most common. Infinity appears. True, he did not suit me, because infinity was, but it was not sharp enough. So I went further.
      3) Slightly untwist the rear lens (with an ordinary metal ruler or knife). Next, I set the focus as close to the lens scale by meters (almost 1 to 1). So at a distance of 2 m, focus on a scale of about 2 meters, at a distance of 5 meters, approximately on a scale of 5 meters.
After that, there was a sharp infinity and the scale most closely corresponds to the meter to the subject, which is convenient. In fact, the full-frame lens has been redone to crop format. All distances were set with the desired sharpness, including infinity.
There is also a minus of this option: at the full frame of this lens, the contrast sags quite noticeably in the corners, i.e., in other words, soap appears in the corners. Accordingly, redoing the lens under the crop with distances and sharpness for a full frame will be the same as in a full frame.

  • anonym

And I have f / a Nikon d60, what kind of adapter do I need?

  • KalekseyG

infinity very easily appears (moreover, with overrun) with a thin ring, two alignment ones stopped back and all the norms

    • Alexander

… And my hopes were not justified when rearranging the adjustment ring (there was one ring) - infinity did not appear… the question is why ?! ... on reflection, I did the work according to the above described method ... the seat deepened by about 2-3mm ... and only then infinity appeared ... as a result of the refinement, the distance to the object on the distance scale coincides with the true (measured) values. Examples of photos are posted above.

  • Alain

I bought yesterday on Nikon 1j1 industrial 50-2 and adapter 42. I can’t figure it out, it doesn’t work without a chip, how can I do without it ??

  • Dmitriy

I’m not sure that Canon 5DsR or Sony A7R will be able to reveal the full potential of Industar 50-2 50 / 3.5 .. Here you need to wait for the cameras at 100 megapixels :)
Arkady, why is it not indicated who is sponsoring the new test cameras? Is it yours?

so as not to be offtopic - I am attaching a snapshot of our Industar 50-2 on a modest Sony A77 24 Mpix.

  • Sasha Grey

My first Soviet lens. I took it for 200 UAH, a new one, plus then I found the original hood (it’s very funny with it), I bought it after I got hooked on this wonderful site. Interestingly, since then I have been collecting Soviet optics, just for fun, I'm not a professional photographer, I just bought a DSLR and I like to walk around the city and take pictures for myself, find a fetish in old Soviet lenses. And Industar surprises me. In the process of filming, I change different lenses, but from this kid the photos are always the best for some reason. Today I walked on a rainy day and Industar showed himself very cool. During the walk I changed Helios 44-2, Jupiter 37a MC, Arsat H50, but Industar pleased me the most. Perhaps this is his element, overcast, harsh, rainy subjects.

  • Oleg

Znayshov udoma is such an asset, Mogger might want to buy it. Ready to sell 0-6-7-3-5-4-2-3-9-2. Oleg

  • Oleg 1

Good day to all photo lovers. Today for 0.7 cu bought a white 50, thread m39, wiped from
dirt and went to shoot. The 66-year-old lens was in very good condition for its year, lenses
Ideally. The result is such a fantastic sharpness I did not see, although the sharpness is quite good, soft on the open, although not as strong as Helios 44, the color rendering is almost correct, when the aperture is closed to 5,6, very good sharpness appears.
The pictures come out quite good for such a baby, a very large depth of field somewhere
with 8 that prompted me to shoot a video on him, and then the kid opened his giant
potential, the video came out just fine, having shot several videos with different lightening, I came to the conclusion that the video from it is no worse than from my hefty lenses, and the camera
almost weightless. Perhaps for shooting a video it will become my favorite lens. This Industar is a great replacement for a whale (especially at a price of 20 hryvnia).

    • Lynx

      hmm ...

  • Alexander

Tell me, please, which lens is better than the Industar 50-2 / 3.5 or CZ Tessar 50 / 2.8? In terms of sharpness on open and bokeh. The difference in price is not fundamental. Thanks!

    • Rodion

Tessar will be more interesting, especially the old one. The new one will be better in sharpness.

  • KalekseyG

    are your eyes bleeding?

  • Ruslan

Concerning Industar 50-2! I looked in the old literature his technical data and write that the resolution in his center is 39lin / mm! And on the forum, people write that it is like the sharpest! So I think it's like ?? That is, there is one thing in the passport, but in reality it is better! ??)) For example, industrial61lz on the passport, the resolution is much higher! So guys tell me what the nail is !? )) And why did I begin to read a branch about Industrial 50-2 I want it as a makrik!? will he be sharper than the Indian61ls! ?? Thanks who is really in the topic!

    • Rodion

Industar-50 is actually a sharp witch. For macro, it will be more convenient to use with rings.
Industar-61 is very soft on 2.8, chromatite. But the version of the native MDF is only 30 cm.
      I would prefer 50.

  • Ruslan

Rodion at 2,8 macro is definitely not who will not shoot!)) The gripe is narrower, it will only be eyes)) In general, I’ll buy spices!)) Because it’s really online there are a lot of words that the Indian 50-2 is sharp! I want to get along the passport lines an order of magnitude worse than the Indian61ls! Well, as they say, compare and accomplish your goal!

    • Sergei

Ruslan, it means that it is sharper across the entire field of the frame, in the center, then of course 61l / s will be better, but if you compare the whole frame, then 50 the average sharpness in the frame above shows

    • Rodion

Indeed - finally compare them and that's it.
But, I say, the I-50, even because of the diaphragm of the traditional form, is preferable.

  • Oleg

and that this lens has front and rear lenses

    • KalekseyG

no, no. this is a typo in the text. it has only medium (central)

    • Denis

1 front and 1 rear, the rest are intermediate
