Overview of Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50

Industar-50-2 and Industar-50-2 are one and the same lens with different spellings of the name. At the end of the review, in the supplement, the differences between lenses with different spellings of the name are indicated.

Industar 50-2 Lens Overview

Industar 50-2 Lens Overview

TTX Industar-50-2 (Industar-50-2)
Focal length: 50 mm
Diaphragm: F3.5-F16
Number of aperture blades: 7 pieces
Thread: M42
The weight: 70gram
Optical design: 4 lenses in 3 groups (4-lens enlightened anastigmatis). The circuit is similar to Tessar lenses.
Filter Diameter: 35mm (there are also 33.5mm lenses)

Of course, after you see the lens in reality, it turns out that it is much smaller than it seems in the pictures. Industar-50-2 - very light and compact lens, I can’t even believe that in those far times they could make such small lenses. I even got the impression that Industar-50-2 pulled out of the camera of some sophisticated modern mobile smartphone.

But its size doesn’t stop the Industar-50-2 from taking great pictures. Industar-50-2 is a medium aperture... Its maximum F-number is only F / 3.5. For comparison, an aperture of F / 3.5 is 3 times 'darker' beyond F / 2.0, which is available with a number of lenses, such as MS Helios-44m-7 2 / 58

General useful information about Industar-50-2:

  1. The lens is small. Industar-50-2 can always be taken with you. It fits comfortably in your pocket.
  2. Little weight. On a hike he will not create excess weight. And with such a tiny lens, any heavy SLR camera becomes an order of magnitude lighter than other lenses.
  3. Cheap. It is unlikely that one can now find a cheaper Soviet-era lens. You can not be afraid to damage it, lose it, get it dirty - which means you can always take it with you to the most extreme conditions. Buy Industar-50-2 can be approximately 10 cu
  4. Excellent sharpness. Sharpness allows you to use the lens starting at F3.5 aperture. The sharpness of the lens is due to its optical design. The circuit was copied from brand lenses Carl Zeiss Tessar... The Tessars are also referred to as the 'Eagle Eye' for their excellent resolution performance. By the way, you can read a review of such a Tessara - Carl Zeiss Jena DDR Tessar 2.8 / 50
  5. The lens has all the necessary indicators: distance, aperture, depth of field. Moreover, the aperture indicators are duplicated twice, which is rare.
  6. Due to the small size of the lens, it is quite difficult for him to find the front cover. If not, you can use the hollow (usually white) cover from the back lens of the lenses of modern Nikon, Canon lenses, etc.
Dual aperture

Dual aperture scale. The lens has two rows of numbers for iris control.

Image quality:

The lens is almost completely fixed HA. Distortion is very small, not very different from other fifty dollars. Of course, aperture fails a little, but the Tessar scheme does not allow particularly fast lenses. A characteristic feature of Industar-50-2 is its ability to twist bokeh, this can be seen in the examples of photographs. What does it twist at the level of Helios-81n. The contrast of the lens is satisfactory. Backlight holds normally. In general, the picture on Industar-50-2 is pleasantly different for the better from the whale lenses that come with the new digital cameras.

Focus ring Industar-50-2 rotates approximately 320 degrees, which makes manual focusing very smooth and enjoyable. When focusing, the trunk of the lens lengthens by about one centimeter, while focusing front lens rotates. The depth of field scale is indicated for aperture values of F / 3.5, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16. Compared to other fifty dollars, Industar-50-2 a rather large depth of field at F / 3.5 (seen in the picture above).

Industar-50-2 with a native front cover

Industar-50-2 with native ZENIT front cover

But the lens aperture control ring is quite inconvenient. It is located in front of the lens. To see what aperture value is set, you need flip the lens front lens to yourself. Iris control is smooth, without fixed values - you can set any intermediate value of the F number from 3.5 to 16.0. When focusing, the aperture control ring is very, very rarely touched. The lens aperture blades have 7 pieces, they create the usual 'nuts' in the out-of-focus area in bright light sources.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.
  3. CANON M: For cameras with Canon EF-M mount need adapter M42-Canon M, it can be found at this link.
  4. CANON R and RF-S: For cameras with Canon RF mount need adapter M42-Canon R, it can be found at this link.
  5. Nikon 1: For cameras Nikon 1 Series need adapter M42-Nikon 1, you can find it at this link.

Addition

I recently purchased INDUSTRAR-50-2 3,5 / 50 (the name is written in Cyrillic, serial number # 7457498), which differs very little from Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50 (from this review, serial number # 80126529). The differences are miniature:

  • INDUSTR-50-2 3,5 / 50 has vertical green lines to indicate the focusing distance. During focusing, the frame rim extends forward, vertical lines allow you to accurately determine the focusing distance.
  • INDUSTRAR-50-2 3,5 / 50 has an older KMZ factory logo with an arrow at the end of a stylized beam.
  • different spelling of the name: INDUSTR-50-2 and INDUSTAR-50-2

The differences are clearly shown below:

Personal experience

Modern cameras look very funny with such a small lens, some people even ask what kind of bayonet cap I have. Many photographers do not attach any importance to the capabilities of the Industar-50-2 lens, but with its help you can really get great photos. If you are interested in this lens and you want to purchase it, then contact us using the contacts from the manual optics section.

Results

Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50 is very compact and contented cutting half a ruble, which allows you to use it for a number of standard photo tasks. From the big conclusions, this small lens can simply be arrogant :)

And how does he behave with portraits? and what advise on manual mode advise? (nikon d5100)

  • Michael

A year ago, after reading this review of yours, I bought myself an "Industar 50-2". I was incredibly surprised at the capabilities of this lens. Then I was looking for the sharpest glass, and with this lens, I was literally achieving pixel-by-pixel sharpness. Then the f / a was stolen along with the lenses. Now that I bought a new camera, of course, the first thing I did was buy an Industar 50-2 for it. In appearance, the state is perfect, the windows are clean, there is no dust, but there is no need to talk about any harshness ... Helios 44 and that works several times more sharply. I am directly sad because of this .. Can you, as a specialist, tell me what it might be connected with?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      The spread of quality.

      • Vova

Arkady, tell me pzhl. Will an adapter with a lens for infinity affect the quality of the picture? I bought this pancake, very sharp and looks like new.
They say that it will be very soapy and in general everything is bad.
Thanks in advance for your reply.

different matrices. CMOS does not run out of power because of the "PERFORMANCE", as is evident on the SSD win richest + mile plurality of the matrix itself

    • Valery

Industar-50 is actually the sharpest of the 5 centimeters. And the fact that it gives you a bad quality - most likely indicates that it was disassembled and poorly or incorrectly assembled. Try to disassemble and reassemble it. On the comment that this is a spread of quality - spit it, tk. THESE lenses have always passed the test check at the exit and the actual resolution was entered in the passport with ink (!). If it was less than 45 l / mm, the lens was rejected. In fact, I once came across a half-ruble with a resolution of 63 lines / mm! (that's 126 pixels / mm)

I bought myself one recently and I'm quite satisfied. True, I often take pictures with them from a tripod than from my hands. The aperture ratio, after all, is not enough for rooms. It is a pleasure to aim for sharpness. I remember trying to aim manually with Nikon's whale - this is hell. And here there are no problems - the focusing ring travel is almost a full turn. I liked very much that the diaphragm does not jump - you can always shift the opening a little, and not click right away from 3.5 to 5.6. The dimensions are just super - it hides in the breast pocket of a jacket or shirt and is almost invisible. I will also take this campaign without options. In my backpack of fast photoreaction, it was registered for life, thanks to its small size (thanks to them, Canon's fifty kopeck piece and Nikon's cropped one 35 1.8 almost always live there). It looks funny on camera, even on a small 400d canon. And on Nikon d80 it is completely invisible :) The sharpness of my copy is fantastic, I got a new, unused lens. There is only one minus in this - the diaphragm and the focusing ring turn very hard. But it will develop over time. Bokeh as it turns can be seen in the description. Considering that I bought it for $ 13, this is a very decent lens. Thank you for your attention, all the good pictures!

    • Pastor

I will supplement my comment. Now I got a canon with life view, so I don’t put this lens on a Nikon with a lens adapter anymore. The quality is excellent, there is little chromaticity, no distortion, the sharpness is amazing for such a baby. And at 50d with a block, it just looks ridiculous. Gigantic camera and a very tiny lens. It turned out that he still looked nothing on the d80, on really large cameras it looks funnier :) Given that most professional cameras are no larger than 50d, next time I will write a comment here when I buy Nikon D2 or D3, which are even more than 50d with a block :)

  • fedot

Thank you so much for the work!
I, as an amateur, are impressed.
sit for days on your page and study.
I didn’t think that you can use old Soviet lenses,
and especially since they can produce such a picture.

I bought for a penny for a start this particular lens and is very pleased.
the picture is simply gorgeous: sharpness, color, volume ...
I put my whale aside and only occasionally use it,
when too lazy to strain or need to quickly and incidentally click.

already made a list of what else I want to buy.
I have a small wish for you regarding adapters.
could you indicate the international designations of the adapters,
since I live in Germany and for example the designation “KP-A / N shank” is not entirely clear.
Does it have an analogue of Western / Chinese production?

    all the best and success!

    • Amatich

This adapter can be put on all Soviet lenses.

  • Julia

    Good afternoon!

Thank you for your reviews, thanks to this, I nevertheless decided to order this miracle of Soviet optics for myself, literally today a package arrived. A lens with both caps, in a case, no dust and scratches are visible inside, which is very pleasing. Now I will try in action - I was lured by the fact that, judging by your description, it is quite sharp, which is sometimes not enough on my beloved Helios 44-2 (although I love it immensely, the whale has been gathering dust in the corner for a long time).

  • anonym

Today I tried this lens with a Nikon90 camera adapter with a lens even under the lower lens block. I put a gasket with a thickness of a millimeter. Infinity appeared. I shot it in a rabbi to make it easier to fix errors in manual exposure. The result was quite fine, I won’t say that the sharpness is awesome, you can see the glass in the adapter still makes itself felt, but I liked the picture. Soviet optics steers!

  • xatxi

The Industar 50-2 is a beautiful lens with unique sharpness across the entire field. True, he also has drawbacks. It is necessary to remove somewhere on f8.Remove it must be removed, set to sleepless. or turn on the main object. I shot on many Sonya just charm. Do not have to get the hood to it with your hand. If you want to buy it you have to choose from several copies. They all differ in quality. Buy, do not regret it.

  • a lion

Hello Arkady! Tell me what is the difference between Industar-50 (mirror version) and Industar-50-2 (rangefinder?

  • a lion

What version is worth taking for the D90? Is it possible to achieve infinity?

  • a lion

Lens Industar-50 3,5 / 50 No. 68 ... is mounted on a Zenit-S reflex camera. Does this mean that the lens version is also a mirror, not a rangefinder (analogy with Industar 61 and MS Industar-61 L / Z)? http://www.photohistory.ru/1207248188712843.html It says that there was an option for SLR cameras.

    Thank you!

With this lens, you can shoot video. Here is an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJ2AK8tODdY

Arkady, are the pictures that are shown here for INDUSTRAR -50 taken from a tripod?
They pleasantly surprised! I shoot with solid lenses whose price is sky-high
and the result with INDUSTRAR or HELIOS is no worse. Yes, no AF; STAB
and what is the result !!! Today I go to the markets to search !!! thanks for your
    labor and tips.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Everything (except one photo) was taken off hand.

  • Anatoly

Great review as always. There is such a lens, I didn’t think that it gives such a picture, I won’t wait tomorrow to try it. I have it as a stub for my old Kiev-17.

  • Dmitriy

Arkady, thanks for the excellent and detailed reviews. I have a question for you: can this Industar be used on Pentax? Is the M42 adapter suitable?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Well, of course it will do :)

      • Julia

Hello! My father got this lens. At the Sony-a37 camera itself. To use the lens do I need an M42 adapter? What does the chip affect, only on autofocus? And what kind of troubles with infinity :)?

  • Elizabeth

Hello! My grandfather got this lens. Can you please tell if it is suitable for the Nikon D7100? Do I need to buy an adapter for it? Which one?

    • fedt

      adapter М42 / Nikon - costs a penny.
with or without a lens - a matter of taste.
      shoot only in manual mode.

  • DM

Cool lens. On closed it gives 14 ray stars from the lanterns.

  • Alexander

A very interesting lens: sharp, affordable, both for purchase and for installation on the camera. Functionality can be considered convenient, but with a leisurely shooting mode.

  • anonym

Today I remade it to infinity to Nikon, without interference in the lens unit. Good lens)

    • fedot

could you share your experience ...

I tried to remake myself - infinity turned out,
but the sharpness disappeared a little. I was afraid to cut and drill,
so just unscrewed the back lens
and put there a ring about 1,5 mm thick.
while the rear lens deepened into the camera.
I think this is not entirely correct
but on the Internet helios is so corrected 44.

  • Anatoly

Yes, it’s easy to remake it under Nikon, it easily unwinds from the back, in front there are gaskets you want to remove, you want to add them.

  • Anna

and you have these pictures passed through photoshop? let's say where the tit is the same processing?

  • Alexandra

I wonder what can be fitted instead of the back cover? maybe there is some similar lens, a cover for which you can buy and use for this? removed from the zenith, now it is not clear how to close the zenith, or how to close the lens ...

  • DM

Alexandra, any covers can be bought on eBay, they cost a penny.
There are even adapter rings for filters for this kid.

  • Ilya

It’s a pity, the aperture is too small: with its excellent dimensions and, say, f2.0, this lens would be just a hit!

  • Natalia

Please tell me if it is possible to try the industrial 50 2 for the Canon 650 d?

    • anonym

650, a new model is needed; an adapter with new generation chips is needed, whoever sells the chips knows which cameras they are suitable for. I work with Canon 650; I also did the adjustment myself,

      • Natalia

        Thanks for the reply.
