Overview of Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50

Industar-50-2 and Industar-50-2 are one and the same lens with different spellings of the name. At the end of the review, in the supplement, the differences between lenses with different spellings of the name are indicated.

Industar 50-2 Lens Overview

Industar 50-2 Lens Overview

TTX Industar-50-2 (Industar-50-2)
Focal length: 50 mm
Diaphragm: F3.5-F16
Number of aperture blades: 7 pieces
Thread: M42
The weight: 70gram
Optical design: 4 lenses in 3 groups (4-lens enlightened anastigmatis). The circuit is similar to Tessar lenses.
Filter Diameter: 35mm (there are also 33.5mm lenses)

Of course, after you see the lens in reality, it turns out that it is much smaller than it seems in the pictures. Industar-50-2 - very light and compact lens, I can’t even believe that in those far times they could make such small lenses. I even got the impression that Industar-50-2 pulled out of the camera of some sophisticated modern mobile smartphone.

But its size doesn’t stop the Industar-50-2 from taking great pictures. Industar-50-2 is a medium aperture... Its maximum F-number is only F / 3.5. For comparison, an aperture of F / 3.5 is 3 times 'darker' beyond F / 2.0, which is available with a number of lenses, such as MS Helios-44m-7 2 / 58

General useful information about Industar-50-2:

  1. The lens is small. Industar-50-2 can always be taken with you. It fits comfortably in your pocket.
  2. Little weight. On a hike he will not create excess weight. And with such a tiny lens, any heavy SLR camera becomes an order of magnitude lighter than other lenses.
  3. Cheap. It is unlikely that one can now find a cheaper Soviet-era lens. You can not be afraid to damage it, lose it, get it dirty - which means you can always take it with you to the most extreme conditions. Buy Industar-50-2 can be approximately 10 cu
  4. Excellent sharpness. Sharpness allows you to use the lens starting at F3.5 aperture. The sharpness of the lens is due to its optical design. The circuit was copied from brand lenses Carl Zeiss Tessar... The Tessars are also referred to as the 'Eagle Eye' for their excellent resolution performance. By the way, you can read a review of such a Tessara - Carl Zeiss Jena DDR Tessar 2.8 / 50
  5. The lens has all the necessary indicators: distance, aperture, depth of field. Moreover, the aperture indicators are duplicated twice, which is rare.
  6. Due to the small size of the lens, it is quite difficult for him to find the front cover. If not, you can use the hollow (usually white) cover from the back lens of the lenses of modern Nikon, Canon lenses, etc.
Dual aperture

Dual aperture scale. The lens has two rows of numbers for iris control.

Image quality:

The lens is almost completely fixed HA. Distortion is very small, not very different from other fifty dollars. Of course, aperture fails a little, but the Tessar scheme does not allow particularly fast lenses. A characteristic feature of Industar-50-2 is its ability to twist bokeh, this can be seen in the examples of photographs. What does it twist at the level of Helios-81n. The contrast of the lens is satisfactory. Backlight holds normally. In general, the picture on Industar-50-2 is pleasantly different for the better from the whale lenses that come with the new digital cameras.

Focus ring Industar-50-2 rotates approximately 320 degrees, which makes manual focusing very smooth and enjoyable. When focusing, the trunk of the lens lengthens by about one centimeter, while focusing front lens rotates. The depth of field scale is indicated for aperture values of F / 3.5, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16. Compared to other fifty dollars, Industar-50-2 a rather large depth of field at F / 3.5 (seen in the picture above).

Industar-50-2 with a native front cover

Industar-50-2 with native ZENIT front cover

But the lens aperture control ring is quite inconvenient. It is located in front of the lens. To see what aperture value is set, you need flip the lens front lens to yourself. Iris control is smooth, without fixed values - you can set any intermediate value of the F number from 3.5 to 16.0. When focusing, the aperture control ring is very, very rarely touched. The lens aperture blades have 7 pieces, they create the usual 'nuts' in the out-of-focus area in bright light sources.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.
  3. CANON M: For cameras with Canon EF-M mount need adapter M42-Canon M, it can be found at this link.
  4. CANON R and RF-S: For cameras with Canon RF mount need adapter M42-Canon R, it can be found at this link.
  5. Nikon 1: For cameras Nikon 1 Series need adapter M42-Nikon 1, you can find it at this link.
  6. Nikon Z: For cameras Nikon Z series (FX/DX) need an adapter M42-Nikon Z, it can be found at this link.
  7. FUJIFILM X: For cameras with mount X need an M42-Fuji X adapter, you can find it at this link.
  8. FUJIFILM GFX: For medium format cameras G-mount need M42-Fuji GFX adapter, you can find it at this link.
  9. SAMSUNG: For cameras with NX mount, you need an M42-Samsung NX adapter, you can find it at this link. There are no adapters for the NX mini camera yet.
  10. PENTAX: For Q-mount cameras, you need an M42-Pentax Q adapter, you can find it at this link.
  11. SIGMA / PANASONIC / LEICA: For cameras with L mount you need an M42-Leica L adapter, you can find it at this link.
  12. LEICA: For cameras with a bayonet mount Leica M need adapter M42-L / M, you can find it at this link.

Addition

I recently purchased INDUSTRAR-50-2 3,5 / 50 (the name is written in Cyrillic, serial number # 7457498), which differs very little from Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50 (from this review, serial number # 80126529). The differences are miniature:

  • INDUSTR-50-2 3,5 / 50 has vertical green lines to indicate the focusing distance. During focusing, the frame rim extends forward, vertical lines allow you to accurately determine the focusing distance.
  • INDUSTRAR-50-2 3,5 / 50 has an older KMZ factory logo with an arrow at the end of a stylized beam.
  • different spelling of the name: INDUSTR-50-2 and INDUSTAR-50-2

The differences are clearly shown below:

Personal experience

Modern cameras look very funny with such a small lens, some people even ask what kind of bayonet cap I have. Many photographers do not attach any importance to the capabilities of the Industar-50-2 lens, but with its help you can really get great photos. Results

Industar-50-2 3,5 / 50 is very compact and contented cutting half a ruble, which allows you to use it for a number of standard photo tasks. From the big conclusions, this small lens can simply be arrogant :)

  • Marina

    Hello.
Please tell me, what is the difference between this lens and INDUSTRAR-50 1: 3,5 F = 5cm?
    Thank you.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The frame is different, also, it can be a rangefinder option.

  • Ivan

    Arkady, please tell me.
You worked with INDUSTRAR-50-2 and INDUSTRAR-50. Do their front lenses differ? I understand that the question is not in the subject, but at least in size. Two INDUSTRAR-50-2 should deliver, but one has a cracked front lens. On the market you can buy for a penny INDUSTR-50. I’m thinking of trying to change.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Worked only with Industar-50P under the rangefinder, they have different lenses.

    • VALENTINE

I-50 (M39) were produced for both Zeniths and rangefinders. In the latter case, the lens in a fixed frame was turned into a Zenit one, if you unscrew the tail of the frame with a rangefinder ring.

  • Ivan

Thank you so much. It turns out that if there is no "p" maybe he is not a rangefinder?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I can’t tell, there were a lot of Industarov.

  • Ivan

    Good day.
Here is my story with the industry. Several Industar-50-2 lenses were purchased. And among them a gift came one export option, in which the front lens was burst. Having walked around the flea market, I purchased (for the chervonets) the white Industar-50. I planned to rearrange the front lens, but after reading the info. on the Internet did not dare not to violate the alignment. I removed the lens block with the diaphragm from both lenses and changed them and assembled them back (it took 45 minutes, including cleaning the lenses). The result when comparing the three Industar-50-2 lenses on the Zeniths (I had no figures), all three options work the same way.

As for the difference between Industar-50 and Industar-50-2, this is the M39x1 thread in the first and M42x1 in the second, and the presence or absence of a rangefinder ring, which is a second to unscrew. The lenses and the internal focusing mechanism and aperture are absolutely identical.

It follows from the magazine of one master cutter that the letter “P” means “Enlightened” and was placed not only on Industars, but also on other lenses (Helios-44, Tair-3, etc.) until the beginning of 1960. After the letter “ P ”in the engraving of the lenses removed.

    • Tobacco

So the lenses come out the same and it is possible to change.
      Akela missed.

      • anonym

You can change it. BUT! Lenses are assembled and developed from different optical lenses. Different types. Changes and improvements can be made in the combination developed by the engineers. Everything could change in different years. In the lens there is not just “GLASS”, but DIFFERENT OPTICAL MATERIALS, BUILT IN A CERTAIN OPTICAL CIRCUIT, WHERE EACH LENS FROM A STRICTLY CERTAIN OPTICAL MATERIAL PLAYS IN ITS PLACE A STRICTLY DEFINED LENS How, what and when they modernized it is hard to find out. Therefore, you can change everything, but not the fact that the lens will work as it was conceived and built.

        • Rodion

You should have a boat ...
In a specific case, the lenses are interchangeable for I-50 and I-50-2. They differ only in enlightenment.

  • justina

good evening! Is this lens suitable for SONY alpha? tell me please!

  • anonym

sand dust got into such a lens; I had to disassemble and clean it; is alignment necessary now? And where you can do, you suddenly know

    • Arkady Shapoval

If there are no problems with focusing, then it is not needed.

  • Andrei

Arkady, if I understand correctly, in order to make Industar 50-2 (which, according to Ivan with an M42 thread) make friends with Kenon, do you need an M42 adapter - Canon EOS?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Yes, everything is absolutely true.

    • yuriy75

moreover, focus on infinity is maintained on canon and the scales of distances and depth of field work correctly.

  • Ivan

Hello, Arkady, I read your reviews about old optics with great pleasure,
question about the subject: was this lens available in a white case and with the M39?
just fell into the hands of a symbolic 150 Russian rubles animal in a white case, with the M39, and with the following designations: industar-50 3.5 / 50 N6646146 Krasnogorsk plant.
I would also like to know - is it a DSLR or rangefinder lens? thanks

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, it was produced, but most likely it is a rangefinder option similar to this https://radojuva.com.ua/2012/10/dalnomernaya-optica-na-slr/

    • Ivan

asked a question here, maybe I was embarrassed by the figure on the rim - 3,5 / 50 as well as on I 50-2, after the publication of the question I leaned out with the camera in the window, there is infinity, the carcass is canon 50D, adapter without a chip, link to Yandex photos: http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/batannikus/album/292351/ , It seems that still SLR)

    • DMITRICH54

IVAN BEFORE 1967 ALL OWN LENSES WERE WHITE BACK SECTION - 45,3 AND AFTER THE PENTAX STANDARD 45,5 MM AND NIKON ALWAYS HAD A SECTION 46,5 THAT TO PLANT ZENITO NAVSKY OBJECT NIKON (THROUGH THE ADAPTER), IT SHOULD REMOVE THE 2mm GASKETS.
OTHERWISE IT WILL NOT HAPPEN FOR INFINITY. AT KENON, a 44mm CUT ON IT THROUGH THE ADAPTER SITS ALMOST ANY LENS.

  • Georgy

by the way, about “not finding a cap”, on the dial (where you can generally find and order any non-standard crap like cheap diffusers for flashes for a penny) of these caps as well as a couple of types http://dx.com/p/37mm-digital-camera-lens-cap-cover-58050 и http://dx.com/p/58050, as well as UV (useful if you make a monocle from it) http://dx.com/p/15807 and polarik http://dx.com/p/17342
Surely do not consider it annoying advertising. )))

    • Boring

He has a 35 mm thread. The filter cannot be screwed on, but I sawed the cap (I left only the moving parts) and sat down normally

      • Georgy

and they generally have different threads. As it were, I had three industars on my hands - and all with different ones, though the 37 mm cap, did not fit any, “without sawing” ((.
However, I made a monocle out of one, and tightly, on a glue, with a small finish I put a protective 37 mm filter, and I put a 37 mm cap on it.

  • Andrei

Hello, Arkady, thank you, this review was very useful! I will soon buy a Nikon D90 (the first DSLR), but I don’t want a kit lens (18-105), I was thinking about the Sigma AF 30 mm f / 1.4 EXDC HSM version (the price is not small). But at home there is an old Zenit-E with an Industar 50-2 3,5 / 50 lens! What do you think, if Nikon D90 + (already available) Industar 50-2 will be better than the above options for combining with a “carcass” in terms of the quality of photos and financial investments? We liked your sample photos very much! Please also tell me where you can buy the KP-42 \ N adapter? And one more question, can the mirrors or the viewfinder in the Zenit-E camera darken or deteriorate after many years? When I look through the eyepiece, the impression is that there are dust particles and turbidity inside.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, it can darken a little with old age. Industar is not the best lens, but it will be more effective than a whale one. The adapter can be found here - https://radojuva.com.ua/2012/09/manualnaya-optika/

    • yuriy75

if you select a carcass for this lens, then better the canon 1100D

    • VALENTINE

Old Zeniths can "darken" only from dust and dirt. The glass does not darken. True, some types of glass can darken from strong radiation exposure (inside the 4th unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant?). My Zenit-3 and Zenit-3M of 1960 and 1966 are both in perfect working order, like their I-50s.

  • sasha

    Hello Arkady.
Is it possible to put this lens on a sony nex-6?
What fix is faster than aperture can be installed on this unit.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes you can. You can mount any fast lens.

  • VALENTINE

When buying I-50 (I-50-2), pay attention to the build quality and blackening of the frame. In the presence of shiny areas, "hares" are possible. For well-built lenses, the stops of the aperture ring should be exactly 3.5 and 16.

  • Yuriy

By placing an object on the Pentax K-5 through the adapter. I am of hostility, such an old and tiny object, I have a good sharpness and high quality of photographs. For Pentax cameras, you can focus on the lack of flexibility.

  • DMITRICH 54

ARKASHA! THANKS TO YOU FOR THE SITE. YOU ARE VERY LITERATIVE AND THINKING GUY! YES YOUR GIRL PRAISED, AGREED, BUT I AM YOUR AGE (BEING A PHOTO) I CHANGE THIS TIME FOR TWO YEARS-YEARS OLD! I'm funny at you! You have feelings. up to 40 units without distortion, the flashes are wonderful, just take it off, and you are degenerating. We had 400 units with fucking grain. They guided me, by the way I still do not use autofocus in poor conditions, the viewfinders are excellent. You remind me of my grandson of 130 years, he the son on the pot was spoiling the diapers for 1,5 months .. ARKASHA I think about it, I wrote about the hyper-color distance, read that the 9mm lens with an aperture of 35 can generally not be sharpened. I’ll think about a bright thought, I repaired dozens of devices and lenses at one time. how to sort through the I-8.

  • Alexander

I am not happy with this lens and the fact that I wandered to this site six months ago! THANKS ARKADY !!

  • Vadim

It seems Dmitrich 54 is now tearing apart from importance. Just do not understand why. And everyone can give advice and write in the bathhouse.

    • Jury

It is visible DMITRICH 54 life lived and knows what he writes)) I wonder how old he is.

      • VALENTINE

If 54 is his age, then he suits me as a son. And this year I have a jubilee: exactly 60 years ago I made my father's Photocourt # 1, developed and printed my first picture myself. Since then, the camera is always with me, because according to the law of worldwide swinishness, an interesting plot can arise when the camera is not at hand.

  • Alexander

Well, once he writes 54, it means that it is ... the rookie !!! :) ... .. today I bought myself this charm, in perfect condition, with lids and a glass, even in cotton wool inside ... the number starts 72 .. (as I understand the year of issue) I immediately stuck it into my stump K20d .. and ofonarel! , for me as an amateur, it's just amazing !!! prettier, cheaper, and easier, well, just not! and the cost is only 5yo :)

  • Victor

Tell me how to install it on Nikon D3100 ?? Thanks in advance

    • Boring

Here is the recipe from one of the sites:
“There is a much more gentle way.
Unscrew the large ring from below (there may be a locking screw in its holes)
The lens block is removed along with the diaphragm installation ring.
There are usually 2 gaskets between the focusing mechanism and the lens block.
Replace them with 1 thin, made of aluminum foil (sometimes you have to do 2-3 if the chocolate foil is too thin)
      Putting it back.
If the diaphragm setting ring starts to touch (we have deepened it), we unscrew it by 1..1,5..2 .. revolutions (it is connected to the diaphragm mechanism with a locking screw, it is unscrewed and then screwed back)
We put it together finally, check infinity, if we flew over, add another gasket.
      This revision is reversible. ”

From myself I will add - removed, one gasket, as described above. I unscrewed the rear lens, put a 2 mm spacer made of black plastic under it (old felt-tip pen :)). I screwed on a lensless adapter with a dandelion from Kuryanov. The bottom line is that an excellent semi-automatic fix came out. There is infinity.

      • DMITRICH54

And no need to shout, everything is normal with hearing.
And I am to them ...

  • Alex

Good day! I recently dug up a similar lens. As I understand it, the first version is marked "Industar 50 3,5 / 50" (removed from Zenit 3m). I have a Nikon D5100 with a kit 18-55mm VR. Is the adapter the same as for Industar 50-2? Is it worth bothering with the industry?

    • VALENTINE

As can be seen from the above, it’s worth it!

  • Natalia

Hello. Tell me the Canon 1100D is well suited?

    • DMITRICH54

NATASH, NO OFFENSE TO NIKONISTS-THROUGH THE ADAPTER SITS, AS Native, BUT WITHOUT AUTOMATION.

    • Yuriy75

buy with a dandelion Lushnikova will work as a native with confirmation of focus. On the 1100d, the viewfinder is too small to focus. At first I used the live wiev mode, but the adapter with the chip greatly simplified my life.

  • Alexander

The Canon 1100D fits wonderfully; I use the I-50 M39 on this camera through 2 adapters.
If your I-50-2 is enough for one adapter, you will not regret it.

  • alexandr-sotnikov@lenta.ru

In my I-50 under the lens block were 2 gaskets 1mm and 07mm Canon did not aim at infinity
did not reach even a little, 07mm had to grind and 045mm was butt. Most likely on
NICON can be adjusted by the gap of these ruts. By the way in and 61ls also has such one ring,
I didn’t measure the frenzy at Canon, it became without a problem, I think you can adjust it to NICON with it.
