According provided by MS Helios-77M-4 1,8 / 50 lens (with the VOMZ logo) many thanks to the reader of Radozhiva - Vladimir Pivovarov.
MC HELIOS-77M-4 1,8 / 50 is a rather rare and good high-aperture fix, at one time it was used as a standard lens for some Zenit film cameras. Now MC Helios-77M-4 1,8 / 50 is sometimes found on photo flea markets and can serve as a good manual fifty-kopeck piece (lens with 50 mm focal length) for modern digital cameras.
MS Helios-77M-4 1,8 / 50 is well assembled. The focus ring has no rubberized inserts, rotates approximately 200 degrees. Manual focus is not a big deal. During focusing, the front retractable body does not rotate. Focusing occurs by moving the entire lens block.
Of the shortcomings, I want to highlight the non-blackened aperture blades, which can reduce the contrast, as well as the fact that there are only 6 aperture blades. On closed diaphragms, 'nuts' are easily obtained in the out-of-focus area. MC Helios-77M-4 1,8 / 50 is equipped with a standard blinking diaphragm, which works in automatic mode on most cameras with a M42x1 / 45,5 mounting thread.

How to use with modern cameras?
Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.
The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.
For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

Image quality
On a full-length mirrorless camera Sony a7 I used a lens with an adapter without any problems M42-Sony NEX. MC HELIOS-77M-4 1,8 / 50 is quite sharp in the center of the frame even at F / 1.8, slightly worse at the edges. On covered apertures, the lens shows very high sharpness. On F / 1.8, vignetting is noticeable.
When used without backlight, the lens shows good contrast. Unfortunately, despite the optics with 'MC', the lens weak in backlight, giving a large number of flares, glare and 'rainbows' (these artifacts are in the photos in the gallery below). Version MC HELIOS-77M-4 50mm 1: 1,8 backlit works much better. The highlight of MS HELIOS-77M-4 1,8 / 50 is unusual twisting the background in the blur zoneso that the lens has an interesting bokeh.
Ultimately MC HELIOS-77M-4 1,8 / 50 is an interesting lens that can be a good creative tool for photo enthusiasts. Poor backlit work makes it worse MS Helios-81H 2/50.
You can download RAW source files by this link (20 files in the '.ARW' format, 400 MB). All photos in the gallery above are on-camera JPEG from the camera Sony a7.

MS HELIOS-77M-4 1,8 / 50 is a pleasant Soviet fifty dollars. Even in spite of the poor performance in the back and side light, this lens can be attributed to the list of the best Soviet fifty dollars.
Familiarity with the Soviet Helios brand lenses I recommend starting with an inexpensive and common lens Helios-44-2 2/58 (aka HELIOS-44-2 2/58). The following links can look at modern lenses Zenitar и HELIOS.

I have an old ZENIT TTL, I bought it in 84 in the Kuril Islands, didn’t shoot a lot, brought it here to Berlin and forgot. I accidentally read the info on some website
ABOUT HELIOS 44M has already ordered the M42 adapter and three MACRO rings. While reading that
the knowledgeable people writes it was caught fire by the ZENITAR M 1,7 and the tapery also by the HELIOS 77M4 1,8
I will search and try. I looked at the pictures - very sensible and I want these.
I have 70x200L, 20mm sigma and sigma telephoto, but what I saw in the pictures
convinced me to look and TRY !!!!!!!!!!!
There is a Canon 50 / 1,8, but there is not enough manual aperture ring (for macro photography, putting the lens back on the front, with a reverse ring). I would like to take this for the Canon 450D, with an eye to the 70D upgrade in the future (due to the video).
Have you tried to shoot with this mode (putting on back to front), or in normal video mode?
How Sharp is the lens compared to the Canon 50 / 1,8
With the pentacon auto 50 f1.8 - is it worth looking for a 77m4 helios?
Hello, is it coming to the Canon 1100D with an adapter ?!
“Auto iris is rather a minus for use on modern cameras, as it will have to be blocked. But, the thing is convenient for Zenith cameras. That is, we set the aperture, and when the shutter is released, it will close to the desired value. On modern digital SLR cameras, manual diaphragm control will require locking the diaphragm pusher spindle. ”
Please tell me how to block it.
And another question, how critical is the focus confirmation chip?
Bought for $ 10, like new. I do not regret it.
You're lucky! And tell me where to buy?
I bought Helios 77m4 and compared it with Pentacon 50 1.8. They are remotely similar in appearance - but the blur pattern is noticeably different. Whoever saw something in common there - I xs ...
How to block the diaphragm?
I bought Lushnikov's dandelion today. The first shock - the dandelion works on the EOS M, it focuses amazingly. After the first shots, I looked around if it was a native Canon lens !!! And the main thing is that now on my Helios 77m-4 the aperture is adjustable, which was suggested to me by Radozhiv (thanks). focal point. Nice little things: decent packaging and a lid without backlash.
Before buying, I received exhaustive advice from Andrei Kuryanov. I am extremely pleased with the cooperation.
Thanks to the Radozhiv project, its author Arkady Shapoval and the mysterious adviser for the opportunity to solve my problem.
Just as an addition.
Helios 77m-4 differs from Helios 44-m4 ...
Resolution:
MS Helios-77M-4: (center / edge) 45/25 lines / mm
MC Helios-44M-4: (center / edge) 41/20 lines / mm
And at Helios 44m7-50 / 30 in sharpness
I sell this in perfect condition, who are interested, write wladtropin@gmail.com
How to determine what is really 77m-4 in hand? One grandfather has 77m-4 on the flea market, and 44m-6 on the other, if you rearrange the front ring with the marking and that's it, m-6 will become 77 ?!
And the price is significantly different!
The 77m-4 has a maximum aperture of 1,8 and all 44m have an aperture of 2.
The diameter of the back of the lens block is 77m4 larger than in the 44th!
It’s not true, they are exactly the same, I specially measured it now.
But no, the back lens of the 77 is 1 mm larger ...
And this is visible with a naked eye?
I understood on a scale of 1,8 or 2, right?
Yes, on the aperture ring.
I have lenses: MSGelios81N, MSGelios77, MSGelios44-3, Helios44-zebra,
I think what to leave on the Nikon D90, and which ones to get rid of. because I own a Nikkor 1 \ 4 50 AI with ears in the excellent condition for what I need for a report. (For the portrait there is Helios40, white, I love it, but it's heavy ) There is something the same in them, but there is a difference. I can’t decide, but I don’t have time to test in nature.
to sell all the glasses and buy a Nikkor 50mm 1.4g, if you need exactly fifty dollars to shoot
I have reworked the "MC Gelios-77M4" mount Nikon.
What do you say?
I got involved in evenings.
Є infinite safety, diaphragm praciuє (not pligayucha, noisy).
About, пktiv pіslya reprocessing the wigglyadє like this:
Viglyad from the other side:
Protesting over the reprocessing of the pid Nikon “MC Helios-77MC4”. The axis of mark on infinity,
diaphragm 1.8. It can be seen that there is an increase in the opening of the diaphragm on the infinity - the image is "smudged" at the edges.
The axis of the sign at aperture 5.6 on the limitlessness. The brilliance of nagato crushing. Vzagalі something, it is optimal to pick up "MC Helios-77М4" - on cropped cameras, for portraits. Win yes, beautiful bokeh.
What the beam holds back light: Helios 77m-4, Helios 81n or MC Pancolar 1,8 / 50.
Please tell me who can, in terms of sharpness and overall picture quality, which is better than helios77m4 or helios 81n
