What type of camera to choose

Today there are two types of cameras most of all on the market - digital SLR and conventional digital cameras.
I decided to write a small article about the choice between what you need to look at, being guided in choosing the type of camera (camera).

General view and design of the digital mirror camera

General view and design of the digital mirror camera

Key Benefits of DSLR Cameras

1. Interchangeable optics allowing you to mount any lens from wide to telephoto, allowing you to shoot in the style of "photosniper". Or vice versa - macro objects, allowing you to shoot very small details. This allows you to quickly get the right quality and artistry of the photo that is required. This is strongly related to the ability to control the depth of field.
2. Performance. Digital SLR cameras have much greater speed. This is due to the fast focusing, powerful processors and camera ergonomics, as well as the speed of turning on the camera.
3. Sensor value - that is, the very digital film with which the image will be registered. Everything is simple here - the larger the sensor, the better the final picture.
4. A million with a tail of additional details and functions - external flash units, control panels, microphones, etc.
5. Quality - in most cases, images with a central lens on any lens under equal conditions of 90% will be better than with digital cameras.
6. Sighting method - when the frame is separated by a black background, it is much better to compose it, and indeed, finding what you need through the viewfinder is easier, since the eye directly sees what will be in the picture, and not another piece of the display, the camera and the background when you aim at soap box.
7. Battery life much longer than a conventional digital camera due to the fact that it is possible to sight through the viewfinder, and not through the display. The display itself absorbs energy.

Disadvantages:
1. Weight, sometimes it exceeds 2 kg, depends on the staffing.
2. Dimensions - large, you need a photo bag.
3. Price - the price bites

The main advantages of digital cameras:

General view of the supercompact camera

General view of the supercompact camera

1. Ease, Now you can buy a Central Committee weighing with a mobile phone. The camera will not interfere and burden on travel, which can not be said about the most compact digital SLR camera.
2. Compactness (in comparison with the central lock)
3. Price, prices will be lower anyway.
4. Ability to shoot video. Not all digital SLR cameras can shoot video, but in conventional digital cameras this function is built into almost every camera.

Disadvantages
1. The picture quality in general will be lost to conventional digital cameras, but in some cases the difference is difficult to find.
2. Convenience (although a rather controversial issue) is worse than that of a SLR camera.

Depending on what you need - you should look towards one or another type of cameras.
In general, digital slr cameras people who are determined to get very high-quality pictures are getting it, as well as amateur photographers who plan to further develop the park of photographic equipment and accessories to achieve even better photos.
Digital cameras more suitable for people who need compactness and mobility, modern digital cameras can always be placed in a handbag or even a jeans pocket.

Thank you for attention. Arkady Shapoval.

Comments: 110, on the topic: What type of camera to choose

  • The

Thank you, thank you, thank you again ... Finally, I found a short and clear explanation of the differences between SLR cameras and "soap dishes" !!!

  • Andrei

Thank you, everything is clear and clear. I pick up a DSLR for myself, settled on two models Canon EOS 1100D and Canon EOS 1000D (fit into the budget). But I still can’t completely decide which one to choose. The Canon EOS 1100D is a newer model, with a faster processor, with the ability to record video (not sure what I will use), the Canon EOS 1000D model is older, slower but it has a matrix cleaning function. In the Canon EOS 1100D, the matrix is cleaned manually or the camera itself removes traces of dust in the photo by itself. Please tell me, is the matrix cleaning function so critical (this is the main argument in favor of the Canon EOS 1000D) if I plan to buy some Soviet manual lenses over time, or does this function not really help? On the other hand, I live on the periphery and find a service center where you can clean the matrix is problematic.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Cleaning the matrix is useful, but in any case, you have to once a year (as it is) clean the matrix yourself with special tools, or take it to a service. Built-in cleaning will not save from dirt stains that still appear on the camera. I advise you to take the 1100D, it is faster.

    Thank you very much!

    Hello :)
I would like to ask you for advice on choosing a camera. Now I'm sitting on Olympus FE-5050 (some pictures were just superb, I didn't think that an ordinary digital soap dish could take such a picture))))), I want to switch to a DSLR. I'm only interested in Nikons, I want to keep within the area of about 30000, although the price is not particularly important. Traveling, landscape photography and all that stuff, I often take macro shots. I also shoot in low light, even less often in motion. In the future, I really want to do professional photography. I wanted Nikon d5100, it has a good matrix, I really like the rotary screen, I really like the HDR function, (if you know where it is still there, tell me - in the reviews of other cameras it was not mentioned) :), I also looked closely at the d90 and d7000 ... In different reviews, they write the absolutely opposite, it's easy to get confused. Can't decide what's right for me. Tell me :)

    • Anna

describe the pros and cons of possible models, so to speak, in your experienced opinion

    • Arkady Shapoval

Nikon D90 is outdated. Nikon D5100 is an amateur camera, a more or less self-respecting pro should not be able to sight through a rotating screen - this is me to the fact that 99% of pictures are taken through an optical viewfinder - this is the beauty of a DSLR. You can also visualize through the display to a soap dish.
Nikon D7000 is it. I still recommend the D7000 - a completely different level compared to the D5100, so it will be much easier to move to a higher level. Personally, I highly recommend the D7000 and nothing else.
Regarding HDR - since the D5100 glues them from two pictures, and not from one, it is better to learn then to stitch pictures with one button on a computer, the quality will be better (if you figure it out), and RAW sources can be stored. D5100 shoots HDR only in JPEG.

  • Anna

Then another question: with which lens are you advising to take the D7000? for starters, of course

  • Roma

I’m trying to choose a camera, I want to choose a SLR between Nikon d5100 and d3100 I’ve already read a bunch of literature, I would like to see the difference in the quality of the pictures taken by both devices under equal conditions (the same lens lighting, etc.) say that the d5100 is much better and the quality of the pictures is close to d7000. advise what is better to choose

    • Arkady Shapoval

The quality of the images is highly dependent on the lens and settings. The D5100 will be better, since it has a larger working ISO range - less noise, etc. And 5100 cameras are up to date, look here.

  • Roma

then d5100 is better, well, perhaps on it I will stop my choice of a model steeper for me, they are a little expensive for me, so far these interests were of interest for advice

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Hello. I'm trying to choose a DSLR. Of the two models, Nikon D3100 or Canon EOS 1100D, which is better for the amateur?

    • Arkady Shapoval

For the amateur there is no difference. I would take 3100 because of Full HD. Nice comparison here.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

    Thank you!

  • I would add point 5. novelty, the newer the device, the better it is, with even 1-2 years and the difference is already visible, although there are exceptions.

  • Svetlana

Arkady, what do you think is the best of the Canon EOS 1100D or Canon EOS 500D cameras?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Better 500D) you will not regret it.

  • Svetlana

    Thank you)

  • Svetlana

And if you choose between the Canon EOS 500D and Nikon D3100?)

  • Svetlana

And how important is the exposure compensation range +/- 2 EV in 1/3 steps or steps

+/- 5 EV in 1/3 steps? Thank you very much for the answers))

  • Valeriy

Please tell me what is better to take for a beginner: the new Nikon D3100 or used with mileage from 1000 to 5000 Nikon D 80, or there are other options (the budget is limited to 5000 UAH)

    • Arkady Shapoval

You can find the D90 for that price. But if you had never taken a SLR before, then the d3100 will be just right.

  • Valeriy

    Thanks for the advice

  • Lily

Please tell me what to take Nikon D 90 or Canon 600 D
    and the best lens option

    • Arkady Shapoval

It would not be bad if you indicated the tasks that the cameras will face. If this is the first SLR, then the 600D with a whale lens will be just right. If you need more serious ergonomics for everyday work, then the D90 will do better.

  • Irina

Good afternoon, I am a tattoo artist, I need to shoot faces and individual details close up. What device would you recommend? (While I shoot with a soap box, the quality is terrible ...)

  • Alexey

Arkady, good afternoon! I purchased a Nikon D5100 kit 18-55 for myself, I have to shoot more dances (movement, and everything is not always good with light, the distance is 15-20 meters) I looked for this Tamron SP 17-50 mm f / 2.8 XR Di II VC LD Aspherical [ IF], I would like to hear your opinion about this lens and your advice if this does not work, and whether autofocus will work (first mirror in operation)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Hello. I did not use this particular modification, but his sibling can be very good - radojuva.com.ua/2011/11/tamron-17-50mm-f2-8-xr-di-ii-ld-aspherical-if/

  • Alexey

Thanks for the link, a lot of useful!

  • Lyudmila

    Hello Arkady!
I am an aspiring amateur photographer. I would like to consult with you about the camera and lenses. I'm trying to find a suitable camera, which is not very expensive, but which allows me to take more or less high-quality images.
A used Nikon D1 camera with two lenses - Vivitar 28-85 1: 3.5-4.5, 62mm and Tamron 85-210 zoom macro, 1: 4.5, 55mm - was found at the auction. How good are they for a beginner? Is it worth paying a total of $ 240 for them, or is it better to look elsewhere? If different, what would you recommend?
    Thank you.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I would recommend Nikon D80 used as a super cheap option. for $ 300 + Nikon 50mm F1.8D AF used for 80 USD D1 is a very outdated option, and the lenses you wrote about are all manual.

  • Lyudmila

Thanks for the quick response. If possible, another question. There was an option with the purchase of used. Nikon D3100 14.2 MP cameras with an AF-S DX 18-55mm lens. But there is already a question price of 450 cu Do you think it's worth it?

    • Arkady Shapoval

It depends on your needs. If you want to seriously engage, then I do not recommend taking an amateur camera with a whale lens.

  • Lyudmila

Thanks. Really like your articles. A plate with the evolution of Nikon cameras is generally very useful, especially for a teapot.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I'm glad you found my nameplate. Good luck in choosing the most suitable camera option.

  • Helena

please tell me how Fuji cameras in general? Or what camera do you recommend in order to shoot macro shots

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Fuji = excellent e.g. S5 Pro.

  • Helena

unfortunately they are discontinued, nikon, kenon fuji what to choose

    • Arkady Shapoval

If you choose between Kenon and Fuji - I would take Kenon.
