Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1: 4-5.6G ED VR IF SWM has a very long name, so for the sake of simplicity I will refer to it as 'Nikon 55-200 VR'. This is an inexpensive telephoto zoom lens for Nikon DX cameras... Nikon 55-200 VR has a built-in focus motor and is therefore suitable for all Nikon cameras... At one time, it became a replacement for an older version - Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor ED 55-200mm 1: 4-5.6G SWM, which did not have an image stabilizer, and in 2015 it was itself replaced with an updated model - Nikon DX AF-S NIKKOR 55-200mm 1: 4-5.6GII ED VR II, which has a lens parking mechanism.
In total, there are three such lenses:
The focal length of the lens is 55-200 mm, which will allow using it for a large number of photo tasks. For example, with this lens you can shoot not very shy animals, sports, various events. It is no secret that a telephoto lens, in general, is suitable for shooting portraits, since it has a small distortion, does not distort the geometry, respectively, the faces are not distorted in the pictures, while a large focal length helps to achieve a small depth of field. True, the Nikon 55-200 VR still has a small level of distortion, but on the other hand, 200 mm focal length can be easily blur the background, which is sometimes very important for portraiture.

Current prices in modern online stores |
Nikon 55-200 VR belongs to the lenses of the most low price range, because you should not expect stunning results from him. The lens is designed for use by amateurs, for the pros there are much better lenses. Depending on the set focal length, the lens has a maximum aperture from F / 4 @ 55 mm and F / 5.6 @ 200 mm, and the minimum value can be set to F / 22 and F / 32, respectively.
The advantages of the lens and their impact on shooting and photo quality:
- Nikon 55-200 VR weighs only 335 grams. On younger cameras (used on Nikon D3000, Nikon D40As well as Nikon D90) It provides a normal weight distribution and holding the camera in your hands is quite simple and convenient. The lens does not pull the camera down.
- Zoom is 3.6 x, which is a normal indicator for such optics. The larger the zoom, the more complex the optical design and the more difficult it is to get good image quality. Also, keep in mind that the viewing angle of 55 to 200 mm on DX cameras is equivalent to the viewing angle of the lens 82.5-300 mm for full-frame cameras. More details in the section on crop factor. I used several Nikon 55-200 VR lenses and did not observe spontaneous focal length changes on them under my own weight (the trunk itself did not protrude).
- Built-in ultrasonic focusing motor SWM (Silent Wave Motor) - allows you to focus on all Nikon digital SLR cameras. This factor is important to owners of non-powered cameras by type Nikon D5200, Nikon D3200 etc. since they can easily use this lens on their cameras.
- Internal focus - when focusing, only the internal parts of the lens move, which means that the front lens and its frame do not move. This will allow you to use different filters without problems. I recommend immediately get protective filter, a filter diameter of 52 mm, filters of this diameter are considered the most common and easiest to find.
- The Nikon HB-37 lens hood comes with a lens. It is very pleasant that Nikon has not been stingy of additional accessories such as blends or caps for its lenses recently. The hood is quite large and with it the lens looks very solid. You can also wind the hood in the opposite direction and always carry it with you. With this installation method, the lens hood does not take up extra space, always on the lens. But if the hood is wound in the opposite direction, then it covers the focus ring and you cannot use the lens in manual focus mode until you remove the hood.
- VR ('Vibration Reduce') is Nikon's term for Image Stabilizer. it the most important aspect in this lens. The stabilization system will allow you to shoot without grease from your hands at slower shutter speeds. The instructions say that you can reduce the shutter speed by 3 steps, which is 2 ^ 3 = 8 times, that is, if you shot with shutter speedequal to 1/160 s, then now the same can be repeated with shutter speed 1/20 s without loss of sharpness (for stationary objects). This is an indispensable feature in the dark. For a telephoto camera, image stabilization is a very useful feature. Of course, the instructions are a bit exaggerated and in reality it will be possible to shoot at shutter speeds no longer than 1/60 s at a 200 mm focal length. There is a button on the lens to control the operation of the 'VR ON / OFF' stabilizer.
- The image quality is acceptable, it is useless to hope for something super-good, for it alone says its price.
What did not like:
- The lens is almost all made of plastic. The bayonet mount (attachment point) is also plastic. The lens itself is made in China :(.
- Auto focus speed is average. It's funny, but the Nikon 55-200 VR focuses faster than the more advanced model - Nikon DX AF-S NIKKOR 55-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G ED VR SWM HRI. The focus ring, unlike the zoom ring, is not rubberized and rotates only 60 degrees.
- The lens does not have any additional marks on its body.
- During focal length changes (zooming), the rear lens moves, creating a “vacuum cleaner effect,” which can quickly contaminate the interior of the camera.
- The lens shows good sharpness at f / 7.1 apertures
- Nikon 55-200 VR has a weak macro, with a maximum magnification of 1: 4.3.
- The lens does not have a permanent manual focus control mode 'M / AM'. Attention: To focus manually, be sure to move the lens to the 'M' position. During autofocus, the focus ring rotates and cannot be touched. Alas, focusing is not the quietest.
Here link to the archive with the originals - 294 MB, 37 photos in .NEF format (RAW) from the camera Nikon D80.
From personal experience using:
The built-in image stabilizer can sometimes buzz and jerk the image in the viewfinder - this is due to the fact that the stabilizer still works for some time after pressing the shutter button and when you move the camera, the stabilizer holds the picture, and then it turns off and the picture “twitches” due to moving the camera. This is absolutely normal. To check the stabilizer, you need to turn off autofocus, turn on the stabilizer and press the shutter button halfway at this time, the noise from the operation of the hybrid gyroscopic drive should be heard.
If shooting at long focal lengths, it is advisable to use excerpts no longer than 1/300 - 1/200 s (if you shoot without the stabilizer turned on) and always remember that the stabilizer only helps to reduce the level of vibrations, but does not completely remove them - therefore sometimes you have to use a tripod. I highly recommend reading the article as take offto prevent blurry pictures.

Conclusion:
Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1: 4-5.6G ED VR IF SWM is one of the most affordable telephoto lenses for Nikon DX cameras. The lens produces image quality comparable to its cost. Me aboutI liked very much its lightness and the presence of a stabilizer. Due to its low cost, I recommend it as a good addition to a standard class lens 18-55 / 3.5-5.6.
In 2015, this lens was replaced with an updated model - Nikon DX AF-S NIKKOR 55-200mm 1: 4-5.6GII ED VR II.

Hello Arkady. Please advise which lens is better to buy - Nikon AF-S 55-200mm f / 4-5.6G IF-ED DX VR. or Nikon Zoom Nikkor 70-210 mm f / 4-5.6 AF. Camera Nikon D90. Or maybe some other lens? thanks
Take 55-200 BP, only with the stabilizer. Without it, there will be solid soap and shake. Do not wait for sharp photos, only with a bright sunny day. But really, the Nikon 70-300mm f / 4.5-5.6G VR is the best telephoto lens for crop and FF from inexpensive and budget models.
Everything is confirmed, I recommend that you read: https://buynbest.ru/luchshij-teleobektiv-nikon/
40 thousand rubles (or 650S) is it budget and inexpensive?
What did you see for 40 sput? Both glasses are for a maximum of 200 bucks, and 70-300 are inexpensive
The new Nikon 70-300mm f / 4.5-5.6G VR in stores costs about 40 ty.
Just watched from 24
Valєra talk about the lens for FX, stink the road and get a little better, and obviously about DX
I'm talking about fx bach
> In 2015, this lens was replaced with an updated model - Nikon DX AF-S NIKKOR 55-200mm 1: 4-5.6GII ED VR II.
Yes, the stores are full of them - over 40 offers.
I would like if not for recall, then at least for understanding what was updated in it and what it gave.
And such a question: Arkady, why in this review and in this
https://radojuva.com/2014/03/nikon-af-s-55-200-ed-dx-mki/
have you stopped publishing tables with parameters that everyone is used to?
It was so convenient!
I did not stop, then I did not add tables yet :)
Advise a good lens for the Nikon D3100?
> which has a “lens parking mechanism”.
It looks like this term appeared on your site for the first time, so it would be nice to interpret it.
Because neither Google nor Yandex knows about it, think what you want.
Look at the review on Radozhive lens 18-55, the last, the newest, there is a video there. Here it is told about the parking mechanism.
The newest one turns out this one - https://radojuva.com/2010/12/obzor-otzuv-nikon-18-55-nikkor/
But there is nothing about the packaging there.
And it’s strange that Google knows nothing about it.
After all, usually like: ask something from Google, and he will certainly lead to Radozhiv :)
And the parking lot - silence ...
How to use Google search described here. Nikon DX AF-S NIKKOR 55-200mm 1: 4-5.6GII ED VR II version is officially located here.
Arkady is silent, and questions are piling up :(
Including errors in the review, for example:
> This lens was replaced with an updated model in 2015
> - Nikon DX AF-S NIKKOR 55-200mm 1: 4-5.6GII ED VR II.
When you look at this text in the review, you see “GII”.
And when you follow the link, you get to “no GII”, just “G”.
Apparently, the point is that there is no such lens "PII" in nature.
Arkady, explain it, or correct it.
And it would also be nice if they gave a detailed distinction between this new version and the previous one.
If go at this link (indicated in the review), then you get just the description of GII VRII. The difference will be described in a review of the GII VRII.
Arkady, I am talking about this link to the “Magaziilla”!
Have you walked on it for a long time? I am already the second day, and every time I get on
Nikon 55-200mm f / 4-5.6G ED VR II AF-S DX Nikkor Specifications and Description
Where do you see “GII” here? There is no such lens in nature yet.
Maybe you should send a screenshot of the magazine?
Yes, send, there is a wonderful photo of this lens with the inscription GII. I attached part of this photo above. The trick here is that the lens can be called both GII and VRII and even GII VRII :). The lens is officially called 'Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f / 4-5.6G ED VR II'. But on the lens body, suddenly, oh Gods, we will find only the inscription “Nikon DX AF-S NIKKOR 55-200mm 1: 4-5.6GII ED VR”. Here is a game of cat and mouse. If you put the prefix 'II' next to the letters 'VR', it turns out that the stub system works better. But in fact, II is not placed near the VR, but simply at the end of the lens name, denoting the second version of the lens, and not the second version of the stabilizer. With this trick, people were bred with Nikon 18-200 G and Nikon 18-200 GII lenses. I quote the names of the lenses according to the writing on the lens barrel and box.
I'll send it right away, one minute ...
Here is a description of the lens on the store - http://savepic.ru/10695508.png
but his photo is there - http://savepic.ru/10685268.png
I don't see GII anywhere ...
Have fun. Please try to carefully look again at your own picture and at my pictures sent earlier. I attach a picture indicating the place to look :)
> I attach a picture showing the place to look :)
Shamed :(
How many did not look, did not see this GII.
But then the question is - where did VRII go? He's not in this photo, as well as on the manufacturer's website.
Although at the same time there is GII in the photo and VRII in the text.
Kick-ass ... as they say, hold the watermelon. Nikon, with its contradictory explanations, completely confused: (((
It will be even more difficult now. Near the front lens is already the usual G, but at the same time VR II. Because the manufacturer is disingenuous. I described this fact in detail in the same situation from 18-55 and 18-200 :). It’s this 55-200 GII VRII in the picture, which is why I call it that in the reviews.
Of course, these tricks and "cat and mouse game" can confuse anyone.
Therefore, let's turn to the manufacturer.
On his website http://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/camera-lenses/all-lenses/index.page
for 55-200 VRII only one line appears -
55-200mm f / 4 AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f / 4-5.6G ED VR II DX AF-S $ 349.95
There is no 'GII' here either.
On the product is written in gold on black GII (lens of the second version).
Okay. Arkady, tell me, please, on this link is this lens we are talking about - GII / VRII, or some other?
http://hotline.ua/foto-obektivy/nikon-af-s-dx-vr-ii-zoom-nikkor-55-200mm-f4-56g-if-ed/
And if possible, literally in a few words, why is this GII / VRII better or worse from the previous version?
And then I’m going to take it, but this informational vacuum stops.
Yes, the range of prices from 3000 to 6000 is shocking, what is behind this is unclear.
Sellers, of course, when asked, everyone is lying as he knows :)
The new version of GII / VRII is more compact, there is a parking mechanism to reduce the size. Should be sharper and stabilizer slightly better (3 stops versus 4 stops). Which one in the store - few people will say, because the sellers themselves do not know what they are selling, they are not specialists, it is difficult for them to distinguish which version. But, I'm 90% sure that if VRII is indicated, then this is a new lens :)
I meant that they are lying about a 2-fold price range - for 6000 a license from “Nikon himself with a 2-year” warranty, for 3000 - gray import or restored.
And how, by the way, to distinguish these refurbished from full-fledged ones, do they really have a mileage counter?
By the way, I found the only review in Russian -
http://www.onfoto.ru/review/Nikon-55-200mm-f-4-5-6G-AF-S-DX-VR-II-IF-ED/4631.html
where the author is also mistaken, calling him VRII and claiming that the mount is metal ..
YES, the mount there is plastic fiction :)
In general - many thanks, Arkady, for the clarification!
And I look forward to your review on GII.
When, by the way, will he be released? And then I'm torturing you with my questions :(
When it falls into your hands :). But Nikon is still a scoundrel with these markings.
Is it made only with China?
And then there are smart reasoning, which happens from Thailand, and even from Japan.
And how to distinguish restored?
In nakhish countries you can't tell. In the west, they come in a gray or silver box, or the Refurbished inscription. VR2 - Thailand.
And yet, Arkady, break all the official description of this GII / VRII on this page
http://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/camera-lenses/af-s-dx-nikkor-55-200mm-f%252f4-5.6g-ed-vr-ii.html
found out that the same abbreviation is invariably found everywhere in the description text -
“AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f / 4-5.6G ED VR II”
It turns out that only the photo points to GII, and the whole description is to VRII.
Then I registered on the offsite to ask a direct and unpleasant question about this confusion :), but first I got into their closed bins, where I downloaded the user manual.
But even there the name is the same as in the text - VRII.
I reloaded it here, those who wish can be curious -
http://share.bashtel.ru/files/559867
I'll also try to ask a t / n question like “What x are they confusing honest buyers?” If I can formulate a question in their own “Albanian”.
It is already clear that all this confusion does not matter anymore, because there is only one such a new lens, and I will buy it, but it’s definitely necessary to poke their nose into the confusion created by them, which is unworthy of a solid brand.
Only with the purchase we have a very unpleasant obstacle: I really do not like these “refurbished” lenses, which cannot be distinguished from full-fledged ones.
So the classic is remembered:
- Why are you sitting?
- I sold a copper ring for a gold one!
Only in our country nobody is imprisoned for these trifles - the “gray” business is booming! :(
All comments with 2 or more links are moderated. And they can name the lens as you like, in fact, they are always right.
> And they can call the lens whatever they like, in fact, they are always right.
Yeah, like “as I want, I jerk off”;)
I wrote a request to them about this confusion, the robot hinted that the answer would come before 48 hours.
there is in the top row of the letters VR. there is simply no place in the second line to duplicate this, and apparently they do not want to reduce the font. and no conspiracy :)
> there are letters VR in the top row. there is simply no place in the second line to duplicate it, and apparently they do not want to reduce the font.
These are not our buyers problems.
Let them reduce the font, make the sticker wider, as you like, but the names should correspond to each other.
And it turns out - they bought a Mercedes with a passport and money, and they rolled out a Zaporozhets for you, and they say that it is one and the same - what is it?
Senya, you got confused!)) That's right, the main thing is in the details)
But do you agree that a solid company makes a fool of the people?
They already have plenty of opportunities for this, but no, they even got to the signs.
And not this little thing at all.
Maybe a note of sarcasm flashed, but I'm the same, if I took it, I will study it thoroughly)
Good afternoon!
I have such a lens and I am delighted with it)) I can not imagine what will happen if I buy it even better!
Thanks for the review!
Arkady! Yesterday I found time to try to shoot the sunrise on the monitored lens and the question arises: when shooting in the “Landscape” mode, the camera works with a shutter speed of 1/1250 and f / 13, and in the aperture priority mode (set 8, 10, 11) and always the camera sets the shutter speed - 1/4000, ISO in all cases - 200, focal, approximately the same, why is it that I am doing wrong, I do not take into account the White balance ?, amateur pensioner, I study only? Please advise.
Because this is the maximum shutter speed of your camera, and with f / 8 it should be 1/5000. Lower your ISO.
ISO to a minimum. Shutter speed too slow for sunrise. Most likely you measure exposure in bright areas. Use M. Pre-measure exposure in the lightest and darkest areas. Set the average or minimum if you want to get a more silhouette photo. But do not expose the sun.
BB has nothing to do with it. The automatic camera set f13 and almost MAX short shutter speed 1/1250 (and the MIN allowed ISO 200), you started to open the hole up to f11, the automatic machine set MAX short shutter speed 1/4000, you continue to open until f8, the automatic machine has nothing to say, the shutter speed 1/4000, went overexposure (which is shown by the exposition in the OVI). It was necessary to cover the hole (up to f / 13), or put LO-1 ISO - 100, the light would immediately become twice as small.
Thank you Valery A, it seems to be understandable, but it’s bad for my brain, if I opened the aperture more, I thought that the automatic shutter speed would slightly change (purely arithmetically), but it turns out that he “thinks” differently, so if I set f of the same value, then and the camera will leave the previously selected shutter speed? I will think. Please don't scold me for my photo illiteracy ...
Actually, you are right - the machine quickly raised to 1/4000, can be explained by the fact that the sun rises quickly, the light grows. Another time, practice at sunset.
the aperture is the diameter of the hole, and the amount of light depends on the area. therefore the aperture is 3 times larger - 9 times more light. intermediate values can be calculated using the logarithm
Denis! Thanks! It is clear, but - logarithms ... as it was a long time ago ... and I studied at an agricultural university, my Alma-Mother: Omsk Veterinary ...
Well, actually, the aperture is not a diameter ... Denis, do not you show how to calculate a logarithm, say, an aperture 1,5 times smaller than f11. If you know what you are talking about.
actually the aperture is not F11, but F / 11
relative to the f / 11 aperture, 1,5 times less will be f / 16
light will pass at the same time 2.25 times less
Well, the difference between the aperture values is the root of 2
to calculate the number of stops, you need a base 2 logarithm multiplied by 2
The aperture f16 is one stop less than f11, i.e. two times less light will pass, and how to count as a logarithm?
Base 2 logarithm of what number? Write the formula, please.
in base 2, of course, I wrote. the number of stops will be calculated like this (in excel)
= 2 * LOG (16/11; 2)
get 1,08
I have not seen such math before. And who is 1,08? Are you sure you should not read about the diaphragm?
and 1.08 is the number of stops, 1.0 between 16 and 11 does not work due to rounding
on the other hand, 2.8 and 2.0 count and get 0.97
and between 16 and 2.8 get 5.03 stops
Well, I'm going to sleep. it seems like I started to write it all in vain, I just confused the beginner and the professional as well as finding fault with my calculations :) well, maybe someone else will write
It is generally accepted that the feet of the diaphragm are: 1; 1,4; 2; 2,8; 4; 5,6; eight; eleven; sixteen; 8; 11; 16 each next one gives half as much light, if 22 feet - then four times, etc. Why is it difficult?
I am a lover. Good night.
And who knows how exposure stops are calculated with an ND filter. For example, I have an ND8 filter, without a filter I have a shutter speed of 1/320 second, then what will be the shutter speed with an ND8 filter.
НД8 - 3 stops. If I counted correctly, then 1/40. Just 1/320 half stop. It is not very convenient to count in your head.

There is a lot of photo debris (poles, wires, parts of roofs), shadows are filled in, colors and light are embossed in places. Sunset is a beautiful thing, but the photo itself does not make an ordinary exception. It complements the plots well. Try to find an interesting spot, compose your shot and shoot at sunset / sunrise. I recommend suncalc.net for calculating the position of the sun at a specific location at a specific time.
I also recommend playing with the aperture, shooting the same thing with different values. Then analyze and understand which one you need, for example, to get a round sun or long rays. Consider the "transparency" of the sky.
In a word, read a lot, but no one has canceled the trial and error method. Good luck to you!
Sunrise, analyze and tell me where, what and how ...
All photos on Nikon 18-105mm.
I recommend a neutral density nd filter with a smooth transition or shooting with bracketing with further combining in the editor.
Artem, thanks. Took a note, I read about bracketing, as according to Ivan Vasilyevich, it seemed that reading is not enough, you need to study, but the ND filter? U / fiol. I know there is, there is a polarizing one, but I haven't used it yet ...
Normal shots, as for an amateur. The LP filter is a gray filter that captures part of the light for long exposures. You hardly need it, unless, of course, you feel the need for it.
It's about gradient. Due to the fact that one part is darkened, and the second one does not allow to align the exposure between heaven and earth. They are rarely more than three pillars, but it is better to take on 2 (nd4).
Thank you all for the information, tips, for humanity, sensitivity and mutual understanding, creative success and good luck ...

Good evening, Arkady, I want to take a Nikon 55-200mm f / 4-5.6G AF-S DX VR IF-ED Zoom-Nikk, for the nikon D3100. I am a beginner photographer, everyone advises me to 50mm, but I'm not comfortable with him, I don't like move away all the time or come closer to take a picture, with this, do you think it will be convenient ??
Hello. Probably, Arkady is busy, I will offer my IMHO. With the 55-200 lens it will definitely not be convenient in a room, indoors - it is rather narrowly “captures”, moreover, it is dark, but on the street it is good for something: as a telephoto lens, albeit moderate and amateur, for shooting distant objects, such as : people (including secretly) or birds (fearless), also on MDF, with 1,1m, and FR200mm, you can shoot winged insects, flowers, etc. This lens cannot be called universal. If you don't feel like framing with 50 or 35mm fixed legs (although they have a certain charm and convenience), your interest should be in zooms like H.18-105, H.16-85, sigma 17-50 / 2,8, etc. .P.
and will I feel the difference after the whale lens
Feel it brings closer.
If you need bokeh it’s better than 50mm, if you want to shoot birds from far away then 55-200. On the side, the advantage is definitely over a fifty dollars. With 55-200 you will go even further. There is some kind of bokeh at values from 85mm onwards, preferably 100-135mm in general. For 55-200 advantage when shooting remote objects. In general, the highlight of photography is fixed lenses, and for artistry, the fix is preferable to dark zoom
55-200 is a bit short for birds. Well, for the ducks, there ...
що підійде for zyomki football volleybo. May fotik nikon d3200
Thanks for the review! Arkady, could you put the archive of the originals of the photo on another cloud?
Thanks a lot of things I learned, when I bought a lens https://fozi.com.ua/shop/obektivy/ I didn’t even know this closely, if I had to buy a new lens now, I would definitely take all this into account!
