Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical Review

Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical (abbreviated as  Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX) was announced on February 9, 2009. Now this lens is quite popular and it is easy to find both new and used.

Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical Review

In brief about the Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical

Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX IS standard fast fixed lens for Nikon DX cameras... In this case, the word 'standard' refers to the focal length and means that the lens provides a moderate angle of view of 44 ° across the frame.

Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX has large aperture... The maximum relative aperture to which the lens aperture opens is 1: 1.8, which is a very good indicator. The Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX is usually a complement to 'dark' versatile zoom lenses such as Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII VR II AF-S DX Nikkor or Nikon 18-105mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED Nikkor VR AF-S SWM DX IF Aspherical. If we compare the maximum aperture of F / 5.6 used in these zoom lenses with the F / 1.8 used in the Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX, the difference will be more than 2 steps, which is about 10 times. Thus max aperture this lens is 10 times larger than regular zoom lenses mounted at the extreme zoom position. So big aperture simplify shooting in low-light conditions. For example, in due time I shot without problems on this lens in temples wedding ceremoniesand baby baptism.

Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX is a fixed lens, which means its focal length is always the same (there is no zoom function). Fix lenses make it much easier and at a more modest price to get very good optical performance. So, this Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX has very good sharpness, inaccessible to a large number of zoom lenses.

The Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX is also a very compact and lightweight lens, it is easy and simple to always carry. Below you can see photos from my vacation, for which I took a lightweight Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX along with a lightweight camera Nikon D40.

To summarize quickly, the Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX is a lens from the category 'Must Have'. 35 mm focal length on the camera Nikon DX give the same angle of view as a 52.5mm lens (virtually the same 'half a ruble') on the camera Nikon fx. Such a lens is suitable for a wide range of photo tasks.

It just so happens that the Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX is the only truly 'fast' prime lens specifically designed for cameras Nikon DX. Other fixed lenses Nikon

Nikkor DX:

have much less aperture.

Assembly

The copy from this review was made in China. The Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX is quite pleasant to the touch, its plastic body does not cause any discomfort. It is very good that the lens uses a metal mount, which is at least some sign of a quality lens assembly. The lens uses commonly used 52 mm filters.

Please note that the Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX mount side has a special dustproof and waterproof mount seal, which is an indication that the lens has a base mount. dust and moisture protection. Unfortunately, the rest of the case is not protected from the negative impact of the external environment. More information on the all-weather protection of Nikon SLR lenses can be found here.

Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX uses a rubberized focus ring. There are bayonet mount tags and a tag for quick hood installation on the case. The lens uses a strong plastic lens hood HB-46, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The lens hood comes with the lens. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. In this position, access to the focus ring is completely lost.

The Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX comes with a soft velor case CL-0913, with which you can transport the lens.

Focusing

Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX focuses quietly thanks to 'SWM'-motor (Silent Wbird Motor - quiet wave motor) and refers to the lens'AF S'type (with built-in motor focusing), and therefore it will automatically focus on any Nikon digital SLR camera.

Auto Focus Speed - average. I want to note that the Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX focuses slower than Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical и Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor. On cameras Nikon D40 и Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro the lens focuses tenaciously and does not release objects from the field of focus. Note that there are a lot of rumors on the net that the lens may not focus accurately (have 'back' or 'front' focus). I've had 4 different similar lenses in use all the time, and they all worked and focused properly.

During focusing, the front lens remains stationary. The lens uses RF focusing (Rear Focusing), which is done by moving the back of the lens group. For practical use, focusing type RF is no different from focusing type IF ('Iinternal Focus' - 'Inner Focus'). With this lens, you can easily use any filters, for example, polarizing.

The minimum focusing distance is only 30 cm, while you can shoot Macro with 1: 6.3 magnification... The Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX has neither a window with a distance scale, nor a depth of field scale, nor a mark for working in the infrared spectrum. In manual focusing mode, the ring rotates approximately 90 degrees, when reaching the extreme positions, it does not rest against it, but continues to slide without affecting focusing. Manual aiming is easy. True, some users of this lens still blame the tight rotation of the focusing ring.

On the lens housing you can find focus switch 'M / A - M'. In the 'M / A' position, auto focus works with constant manual focus priority. The 'M / A' mode is very convenient and useful - for manual focusing or focus correction, you do not need to additionally switch the lens to the 'M' mode. You can turn on the 'M / A' mode and forget about this switch forever.

 Diaphragm

Diaphragm lens consists of 7 rounded petalswhich form a fairly even hole. Diaphragm closes to F / 22. The lens does not have an aperture control ring, nor does the DOF scale.

Lens features on Nikon FX full-length cameras

Interesting: the lens has a good margin of performance, it can work with grief in half and on full-size Nikon FX cameras (for which it is not designed to work) Here is the link on mine sample photos on Nikkor AF-S 35mm f / 1.8G DX and full-format camera in FX image area mode.

Image quality

Good picture quality is obtained due to use aspherical element in the optical circuit of the lens. On foreign sites they write that the lens uses plastic inserts for a hybrid aspherical element, I did not find detailed information about this. Chromatic aberrations (HA) are highly visible until F / 3.2. The purple halo (Purple fringing), which is difficult to remove even when shooting in RAW and post-processing. To catch such a halo, you need to try. The purple halo border is the only major drawback of this lens.

In general, the lens has “cream” bokeh. Don't expect the lens at f / 1.8 to blur the background too much when photographing portraits. For portraits, any half a ruble (50mm fixed lens). I recommend reading my article about  how to take pictures with a blurred background.

Distortion 35 mm still remained and quite a bit makes its own negative adjustments.

Vinienting imperceptibly at any aperture. Natural color renderingeasily fixed by setting white balance in the camera. Lens very sharp at any aperture.

My experience:

The 35 mm fix, even on the DX matrix, is quite short and not familiar to me, but shooting with this lens is a fairy tale! Ergonomics and functionality on top. All those who want to upgrade their whale lens, I recommend this particular Nikkor AF-S 35mm f / 1.8G DX.

Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical is an excellent standard high-aperture prime lens for cropped Nikon DX cameras. The lens has excellent sharpness and compactness, works on all digital SLRs Nikon. The lens has only one serious drawback - strong purple halos on the contrasting details of the image.

Hello, I purchased this lens three days ago. My first fix, before that I used only the whale zoom 18-55, so I was expecting something special ... but this did not happen ((The picture is soapy compared to the whale even at 5,0 aperture. For example, I give two photos:
    1. AF-S NIKKOR 18-55 mm 1: 3.5-5.6G
    2. AF-S NIKKOR 35 mm 1: 1.8G
Both photos are converted from Raw with the same default settings from Adobe Camera Raw, 100% crop, shutter speed 1 / 1,3, aperture 5,0, ISO 100, focal length 35 mm for both lenses, in both cases a tripod was used, the delay was 2s and preliminary lift of the mirror (the image stabilizer in the whale was disabled).
Now I don’t know what to think. Maybe the lens is defective or is there nothing criminal in these photos? Then where is the vaunted sharpness of fix?
Who has any thoughts on this?

    • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

As for me, both photos have no focus. Maybe it's in the camera. The difference in sharpness of zoom and fix is noticed only by an experienced photographer, and even then not in every photo. Fix take as a portrait or wide-angle, also for greater aperture to shoot in low light. Fixes are not bought for sharpening. If the whale had a problem with sharpness, then the problem is not in the lens.

    • John

This is your weak carcass. I also set this glass to 5100 and only 2 out of 20 shots caught focus. In the Photo-Parts workshop in Nikolaev, after “shooting” at the target, I was advised to change the carcass. They didn't take money. I bought 7000 and aptly beat 10 out of 10. The lens is cool. Worth the money% 200.
Thanks to Arkady for the resource! :)

      • Valery A.

Weak carcass? This lens works without any problems for me on any of the 4 available carcasses - from d50 to d5100, at d50 it is the nicest of all.

    • Ekaterina

Hello! I recommend that you take it to the official service center for calibration and always wear all new equipment for this procedure, it helps to eliminate such shooting defects.

    • Alex

I bought a lens for 5100. earlier there was a kit 18-55, I saw the difference from the first frame, the sharpness is very good, the focus is faster, the bokeh is just bombing, I recommend !!!

  • Sergei

    Fix

    • Jury

      it's not a fix, but 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6

      • Sergei

In what sense? In terms of quality - I agree, but in fact - AF-S NIKKOR 35 mm 1: 1.8G

        • Jury

in the sense that in EXIF this photo says: Lens Model 18.0-55.0 mm f / 3.5-5.6

          • Sergei

Looked - indeed in exif it is written that the whale is 18-55 mm, but if I took a picture, I was definitely 35, how can this be?

          • Sergei

In exif of the original ditch 35 mm, after converting to jpeg - 18-55 mm

          • Sergei

But the question is whether this sharpness is normal for a 35 mm fix, maybe I just got a super sharp whale before, and now I see a sharp deterioration in sharpness?

            • Jury

I recommend checking the lens with the camera for back focus, read on the Internet how to do it

              • Sergei

I checked it on the newspaper - the line I was focusing on was not sharp yet, the depth of field begins on the more distant ones. Is this a lens replacement base? (according to the law, it seems like there are two weeks to check for faults). If you give it to a yustiroku, it will not void the warranty?

              • Jury

I will not tell you - I never gave lenses for adjustment. According to the law, within 2 weeks you can simply return if the presentation is not violated.

            • Vasil

During the year I managed to buy and sell this lens three times because of the “shift focus”. In the Internet, the effect is well described - focusing at f1.8 and shooting at a set aperture. Moral - shoot on LiveView or take into account autofocus misses.

Friends, help confirm or dispel the assumption about the sharpness of this lens.
After some analysis of my focusing preferences, I realized that I really need a short crop fix. The strips are still too long for everyday shooting. And then naturally 35 / 1,8 was drawn as a leader in terms of price / quality. But damn it. Looking at the pictures from him, jitters begin to beat. Everyone talks about its wonderful sharpness, but nobody mentions the nature of this sharpness. And the character is exactly the same as that of whales - an apparent sharpness. Everything seems to be ringing, but there are no details, and the tone transitions are all in the mud!
The feeling is that on cheap plastic lenses, microcontrast is simply overstated, they achieve a sharp picture. On the same helix, if you get the focus, then the sharpness is obtained precisely from the clarity and purity, but if the focus is slightly shifted, then with a photoshop increase in micro-contrast you can get something similar to this plastic sharpness.
Another example: the ancient nickor 35-105 gives a picture that seems to be blurry in appearance, but if you look closely, it’s designed for every small detail that has got into focus, and you can safely add sharpe.
So maybe he nafig, this 35 / 1,8? Then only 35 Chinese and 30 / 1,4 sigma remain of the available ones. I would not take a steam bath and immediately took sigma, but with it there is a different lottery - focus and reliability of the motor, well, extra weight ...

    Hello, which is better Nikon D7000 Nikkor 35mm f / 1.8G or Nikon D7000 18-105 VR Kit?

If a little for everything (and capture wide, and zoom in), then 18-105, and if more interesting photos in terms of sharpness, volume, and with slower shutter speeds or ISO, but with a limited "angle of view" (approx. 45 degrees .) - this is for fixing.

Good afternoon) Tell me please, is it worth taking 35 mm, or looking for something from the zooms? In the presence of a d90 camera, there is a fifty-fifty 1.8d, there is also Helios 50, I would like something universal, for landscapes and portraits.

    • Valery A.

Universal, for landscapes and portraits - this is a compromise, a concession of quality in exchange for universality in focal, zooms like 18-105, 16-85, sigma-tamron 17-50 / 2,8. You can shoot a landscape even 18-55, but have you tried your portrait 50 / 1,8D?

    • Arkady Shapoval

In any case, I advise you to have a station wagon. Sigma 17-50 OS, Tamron 17-50 VC just right.

  • Alexander

Of course I tried) but I want to with a wide angle and that it would be possible to shoot in some room.

    • Michael

Take it and try it somewhere. 35 on a crop convenient distance. For portraits, they usually use just from 50 mm, and vice versa for landscapes. I want everything at once = zoom.

    Which is better Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1: 1.8G SWM or Yongnuo YN 35mm f / 2 lens for Nikon, 35mm F2.0? thanks

    • Valentine

Other things being equal, the native Nikkor is better. Nikkor should be checked for focus accuracy and defects in optics, mechanical or electronic parts. For an amateur crop, a good choice.

    • Denis

the Chinese product is rated as "for an amateur", "for that kind of money, okay"

    • Vitaly N

Native cheaper and better in the end. Already there are reviews about the breakdown after 2000 frames. These are several excursion days with a camera.

      • Denis

and a whale is better for an excursion than any 35

        • Vitaly N

Who argues. Until they lead to a museum or temple where you can’t use a flash. Or on a night tour. Or you need razor sharpness. There are many situations when a fast fix does not hurt, and sometimes it can’t work without it at all.

    • Victor

With third-party manufacturers like Tamron (17-50 2.8 the focusing ring increases backlash per day of shooting) sigma (you can see a microcircuit board with a hole for dust to get in. Yaga is money down the drain ...

  • Victor

Color reproduction is richer than fifty dollars, very sharp. It breaks the geometry. In daylight, the face is not very. He stopped at 16-85, in which everything suits.

    • Valentine

Your comment raises solid questions: what is the fifty-kopeck piece (you are comparing 35mm 1,8G with 50mm 1.8G)? what does a more saturated color reproduction mean - are you talking about contrast or what in this case? what's wrong with faces in daylight? breaks geometry - is it about a small distortion, which is automatically corrected by a camera or editor, or what?
PS 35 is definitely simpler than Nikon's 50 1,8G, but these are lenses with different tasks. No fragility, color distortion (skin or something else) I do not note. Pretty simple, but good and needed for crop lens. Fifty dollars a bit for other tasks.

  • Vitaly N

Hello, I tried to use this lens for the night sky on the Nikon D5000 in M mode (manual). I set the shutter speed to 8-10 s and opened the aperture to the maximum, and after the first shot, the shutter speed changed spontaneously, it was again necessary to set the second frame. Are the settings reset themselves manually? And thanks for the resource!

Where exactly did you include “M”?

    • Michael

      Maybe bracketing enabled

      • Oshel

Yes. AE2.0 has been enabled. Missed it. But he shot single shots, it seems he only works in the series. Thanks for the answer.

        • Michael

          No, on frame-by-frame shooting too

Arkady, hello! Can you please tell me, I bought a Nikon 35 mm 1.8 lens from my hands, the seller claims that he used it for two years, professionally, I guess. When buying, there were traces of "thread" from the constant change of lenses. Camera d3200. I am confused by the fact that the lens takes a long time to focus, the autofocus points are always red, and when focusing, they should light up green. For demonstration photos, the seller additionally twisted the focusing ring on the lens. Help me figure it out, or I was deceived, and the lens has problems with focus, or I do not have enough knowledge and skills to work with technology. By the way, I really started learning to work with a mirror quite recently. Thank you very much in advance! Sincerely.

It seems that on the d3200 in the viewfinder there is only one color of the focusing points illumination - red. If the lens works normally on one focus point, it means just unnecessary fears. The rest is not scary.

        Arkady, thank you!

    Hello!
I've been using the Nikon D5500 carcass and the 18-55 kit lens for the same year. I was thinking about buying a fast fixture. Having shoveled through a bunch of articles and conferences, I realized that the best inexpensive option for FX is 50mm, while on the crop its analog is 35mm. But then I came across the Nikon lens emulation site (https://www.nikon.ru/ru_RU/learn_explore/nikkor_lens_simulator.page) Comparing the picture on the FX-50mm and DX-35mm there, I see that they are not identical at all, the one-on-one picture with the FX-50mm on the crop is given by a 25mm lens. Who to believe? What to take? Share your experience.

    25DX 50FX

Trust the numbers, not the picture. Down below, the angle of view, it is different for 25 and 50

35 I have enough for walking. If the walk is long, I take 55-200 in addition :)
In general, 35 is the most universal lens for crop from fixes. And the emulation site is most likely lying.

I put 35-ku on d-90. With artificial lighting, hitting the target is one of five. When using an external flash, the result exceeded all expectations. A growth portrait from three meters with aperture of 1,8 gives each hair on the eyelashes.

And how does he make a video

  • anonym

Under artificial lighting, in an apartment, I'm only interested in the video ...

    Did someone use s5pro?
