What settings are you using? For the appearance of bokeh, you need to slightly cover the diaphragm (1 stop will be enough). The appearance of bokeh also depends on the background. If in the background there is some relatively flat background (for example, sky, or sky and field), then you will not see the torsion effect.
But if it is a working garland on a dark background or light shining through the foliage - here you can enjoy bokeh in full glory. Shoot more in different conditions, then you yourself will understand when and what you can squeeze out of this lens. I can't say anything about the versions. I use only Helios-44-2 myself.
