Even you got a shitty copy! I'm razor sharp! do not draw conclusions about glass on shit! How many helios I had not smeared since yours! it's just that yours is wrong!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Your remark runs through my entire review “you need to remember that this is only my copy”. But the review just shows an explicit hypothesis about a large spread in the quality of 44th Helios. If you have any other comments - write, people will be interested to know about the true Helios-44m-4.

  • Ramzai

there is scatter, but not to the extent that it has been inflated! Dozens of these helios passed through my hands, and frankly bad I met only 4 in total, and those with traces of analysis.

    • Arkady Shapoval

It so happened that for the test I came across a really bad specimen, as I already wrote, the diaphragm stuck there also after disassembly. Nevertheless, key points in the review are given.

  • Ramzai

If you tested a successful instance, the review would be completely different!

  • Haberdasher

I tested Helios 44m, the portrait resembled a film in terms of colors, but on F2 it is worse in sharpness than 5.6, but sometimes you do not need sharpness for a portrait “like a razor” It works in a semiautomatic device on my D300S where it is written into the processor of the device and in addition to the diaphragm and autofocus everything works. I want to try the lensless adapter. And for those who want the settings in the semiautomatic device to be saved - buy an adapter with a chip http://www.filmprocess.ru/nikon.html and everything will be like mine at 300tke

It’s quite a nice glass, but because of the shallow depth of field on the aperture up to 4 it seems soapy (although with crooked hands and on the others too :)). I have 2 helios, 44-4 and 44-2, there is such an interesting moment on both, infinity at infinity, but at zero, or rather its right part of the last maximum digit, that is, at 44-4 this is the right edge of the 10 meter mark, and at 44-2 it is the right edge of the 20 meter mark. I use with eos 350d. I bought 44-4 for 450 rubles, and 44-2 for 400 rubles. I never regretted the acquisition, I recommend it.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Thanks for the information.

  • Eugene

Yes, I also want to add, the hood (I use a rubber folding) and a light filter (so that nothing flew onto the glass) will not even hurt him.

  • DV

Does the author of the article have permission to place the photo “Helios 44m-4 side view”?

  • Alexey

Tell me, please, what is the difference between Helios 44m and Helios 44?

    • Arkady Shapoval

No difference. True, there are many different 44m-4, m-5, m-6, m7, etc.

      • Lelik

difference in price =))))) Arkady, for especially tight ones - really there are no differences at all? I have a Canon 500D, I take pictures of my family ... .. I like portraits, so I want to try Helios, but I don't know which one is better to buy. There are many different ones at the flea market….
        Help the blonde;)

        • Arkady Shapoval

If you come across high-quality copies, you can hardly see the differences in the picture. Most likely the question was not the price, but the quality of the picture and characteristics.
Helios 44m and Helios 44 have different design frames (type) and aperture control (+ for Helios 44 M39, for Helios 44m M42). Better take the old white Helios 44.

  • Lelik

oh, Arkady ... I asked wrong ... or rather, I hurriedly read the message, and then it turned out that my question was not about that. What I mean is “True, there are many different 44m-4, m-5, m-6, m7, etc.” …… ..I read the characteristics on the plant's website, but could you tell us in everyday life how they differ these lenses ... ... should I pay extra ... ... so at the flea market 44M costs 20 ye, and 44M-6 - 40 ye
    that's what i'm talking about
    Thanks for answering!!!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Lenses differ in quality control and resolution according to the idea. But in reality, how lucky. If possible, just try two copies on your camera - two or three shots will be enough to understand what's what. If you don't feel the difference, take Helios 44m. By the way, a comparative review of Helios-44-m6 will be released soon

      • Lelik

Well, theoretically M7 - d.b. better than m4? So? or they are for different purposes ... ..

  • I have exactly the same left from the “Zenith TTL”, I will definitely try to adapt it to the D5100.

  • Olegte

»At helios 44, the problem of infinity is solved by twisting the rear lens unit by the same 2 mm.

Yes, the flash in TTL mode will not work. It needs to be switched to manual mode. ” Need scissors (better) or 2 screwdrivers (worse) At the rear end of the lens, you will see the rear lens, respectively, around which there is a thin metal ring with 2 slots. Pull the ends of the scissors into these grooves and rotate (carefully!) Counterclockwise. The ring will begin to unscrew along with the lens. Empirically select a value (there are approximately 2mm threads) and fix for example with a drop of PVA or “moment” so that you can then screw it back. • Novel

Do you think the Pentacon 50mm f / 1.8 MC will be better than this Helios?
as far as I know, they have the same roots and it seems that there are no special differences ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

Everything is very dependent on the instance. The optical design is the same. The only thing Helios is slightly longer in terms of focal. I would prefer Helios.

  • Matthew

Hello everyone. I also bought recently a Helios 44m4 amazing condition they didn’t use at all, the ring move is not bad, the photo is good, before that I shot the ring smoothly like a red-hot knife on the 44-2 move, at a price of 44m4 I bought it with zenith for 500 rub . and 44-2 for 300r. there is someone as lucky)

  • Saidaziz

I have a nikon. I took a Helios 44m from a friend, put on an adapter without an optical element, it turned out like this: they say there is no infinity and you can focus only on objects no further than 4-5m, I really tested it and got the numbers no further than 1-1,5m. Useless thing. Unfortunately the adapter with wholesale. I didn’t find an element in Tashkent, but the simplest M42 without a chip without which the red price for ibei $ 2 costs us 40 and is irrevocably. And as for those who say that on soap f2, I’ll say one thing, on f2 the depth of field is greatly reduced, so it becomes very difficult to focus precisely by hand, we are talking about a few centimeters, so it’s not the lens that is washing, but the human factor.

    • Arkady Shapoval

There the depth of field is less than a centimeter.

  • NIK

I have Helios-44m-4, the quality is exactly as the author described, for which many thanks to him. Not so sad.

  • NIK

And recently I took Helios-44M-2 from a friend, the quality is a cut above. It is worth thinking about the legend with the last digit. They riveted them on the conveyor, fulfilled the plan. And control at that time was not at all in this workshop, who was then interested in the quality of consumer goods.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Well, actually, I wrote that everything really depends on the selected instance)

  • Jury

I have helios 44m and ms helios 44k-4, the latter due to ms enlightenment has better contrast and holds side light not bad (unlike 44m) both lenses show very good sharpness and contrast with aperture 2.8,
    - when fully open, noticeable spherical aberrations sometimes give an unexpectedly strong soft effect (almost like a monocle)
    - by 2.5 the picture is more definite (and quite predictable) but the CAs are still noticeable and the sharpness is not quite sharp: D
    - at 4-5.6, I just don't know where it is much sharper =)

in 44k-4, by the way, the six-petal diaphragm with noticeably rounded petals gives, in my opinion, more pleasant boshes than 44m, whose 8 petals converge unevenly to a value of 5.6 (and this is on very many specimens, not only mine) and give in bokeh sort of circular saws: D

I think it’s unfair to show pictures in the review at values of 2 and 2.5 because on more covered apertures we have a different lens and I think this is very cool, because such features expand creative possibilities not bad

By the way, I almost forgot that both of my helios give a color rendition noticeably nicer than the native whale 18-55 3.5-5.6 (which many will not surprisingly say) and than the not-so-cheap AF-s 35 G DX 1.8 (but this is strange)

    I rent for Nikon D3100

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thanks for the helpful comment. In reviews of other modifications Helios-44 there is a photo on almost any aperture.

    • Paul

It would be very interesting to know how you hooked a 44k-4 with a Pentax K mount onto a nikon.
I myself have such a lens, I can’t find in nete how to remake it.

  • Jury

those. I wanted to say that it is important to show pictures with both open and covered aperture (from 2.8 and more)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Read the article carefully, my copy just did not squeeze less than 2.5. Yes, and very many people are interested in behavior on open, very many people just chase after aperture.

  • I shoot them on film. Such a normal staff / portrait lens. Soft (although my end result is usually sharper than in your photos), but I'm not after “ringing details”.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Check out the Helios 44 review. This review clearly states that the test instance was defective.

  • Maksim

Who cares, I can write detailed instructions with photos on how to align this lens to infinity. In fact, everything is quite simple.

    • Arkady Shapoval

If it's not difficult, write, in any case - it will be vital for someone.

    • Arkady Shapoval

  • Andrei

So I already have 2! I almost never use 18-55! Do not change it anyway?

    • Arkady Shapoval

And where do you get a wide angle?
