“So, if you have a lens with a focal length of Hmm, then you need to shoot at a shutter speed no longer than 1 / X. For example, if you have a 50mm lens, then you need to shoot no longer than 1 / 50s ... ”But what if the lens has a variable focal length? For example 55-300?

    • Arkady Shapoval

The rule applies to any lens, if you shoot at 60mm, then no longer than 1 \ 60s, and if you zoom to 200mm, then no shorter than 1 \ 200s. To set up auto iso for zoom, just take the limit. In your case, it will be 1/300 s, but considering that the lens is equipped with a stabilizer, you can reduce the value by 2-3 stops. For zoom, you need to take the limit, in your case 1 \ 300s, taking into account the stabilizer - it will be 1 \ 100s. In the registry office at 55-300 you can't take off too much for a crop.

  • Orward

Isn't it possible to change the shutter speed at each focal length?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Ideally, yes, but in fact, no one bothers about it. If you shoot with a flash, you also need to take into account the effect of freezing motion from the flash, because the flash pulse lasts from 1/16000 to 1/800 s for the SB-910 (as far as I remember). Thus, a number of parameters are superimposed on each other: flash, stabilizer, hand strength. And when shooting, you can already determine which limiting exposure to set.

  • Orward

in the registry office will be better than 18-105. Those. it turns out that for this lens in AUTO ISO, 1/60 is quite enough, taking into account the stub in the lens. And for shooting at 55-300, this value can be set 1 / 100-1 / 125. But for fix, 1/50 will not be too long, there will be no daub? He does not have a stub.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, for the registry office 18-105 will be just right with 1 \ 60. For a fix, 1 \ 50 is already slightly difficult, I sometimes shoot a wedding at 50 1.4 with an exposure of 1 \ 30, in short - very difficult.

  • Orward

Those. In principle, 1/60 shutter speed can be used for fixation.
About the flash. Now I tried to remove it with a cap and without. There are pros and cons. Puff 45 degrees to the ceiling:
    - first shot with diffuser, hair and colors are better, but there is shadow,
    - in the second case with a retractable card, it does not cast a shadow, but the hair color acquires a face tint.
A double-edged stick turns out ... But there is one more thing, but, while you pull this tongue out of the bowels of the flash (and it is pulled out only together with the hinged corrugated glass, because they have one lock such as a recess and a hole. It turns out that you first need to push both of them, separate with a retainer, push the corrugated glass back and pull out the matte tongue), then this whole undertaking takes even longer than putting on the cap, but this is nonsense, the main thing is that it seemed to me that this design would come to the khan after such manipulations to get / fold. Also, as if not a way out, or is everything there strong and reliable?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      yes, for fix enough 1 \ 60.
Khan does not come, I have SB-900 for the third year, and everything works fine, it's a professional flash. Also, note that the diffuser and reflector card are used together and are not recommended for individual use. Personally, I do not use them individually.

  • Orward

“The diffuser and the reflector card are used together and it is not recommended to use them separately ...” So if they are pulled out together, the grooved diffuser covers the flash lamp, and the card remains horizontally sticking out, so should you use it?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes. Pay attention to the flash zoom during these manipulations.

  • Orward

I don’t know how in the SB-900, but in the 910th on the grooves the spring is most likely the same in the 900th.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Exactly the same.

  • Orward

I would like to clarify something. Above you wrote: “Also, please note that the diffuser and reflector card are used together and use separately is not recommended. I personally don't use them individually. ”
Here is what the SB-910 manual says:
    -------
    Configure the built-in reflective card.
Pull out the reflective card and the built-in wide-angle diffuser and hold the reflective card in its original position inside the flash head.
To insert a reflective card, slide the built-in wide-angle diffuser back in and then reinsert it with the card back into the flash head.
    ---
    Adjusts the built-in wide-angle diffuser.
Gently pull the built-in wide-angle diffuser all the way and position it above the flash screen. Set the reflective map to the original
    position inside the flash head.
    -------
The instructions seem to say that the card and the diffuser are just used separately, about which I wrote above.
I would like to know where you read that they are used together? How do you use them at the same time?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I did not write that they can not be used separately. I just use them together, so the diffuser gives soft light, and the card increases the amount of light in the direction I need.

  • Orward

    Ok, thanks for the discussion!

  • Orward

"Yes. Pay attention to the zoom of the flash during these manipulations ... ”It almost does not move, as if the diffuser cap is put on, but if the wide-angle diffuser is put on.

  • Orward

Now I took 2 pictures, one to the cap, the second with a wide-angle diffuser thrown over and an extended card. The result was the same, shadow. colors, almost all the same.

I would also like to share my experience :) Before the wedding, I usually “try” young people, take a short shot, people are different with different skin types, which sometimes brings unexpected surprises and then you need to quickly and correctly make decisions. Also, during such shooting it will be easier for you to establish psychological contact with the newlyweds, and this is very important. The most beautiful photos are obtained when a person wants to be photographed. Very often many clients think that you are a pro with a mega cool photo and the pictures will also be super regardless of the circumstances. You need to know in advance where to take for a walk and what do it there, believe me (for beginners) such a mess will be in your head on your wedding day, that sometimes it is better to even sketch out a plan in a notebook :)) By the way, serial shooting is not salvation, very often it turns out that you get 5-6 misses, instead of one two sharp shots (regarding the reporting in the registry office). Therefore, if you are completely “green” it would be nice to go to one or two ceremonies (they are very similar and stereotyped) if you know chronology of events, you will be able to better navigate the place. And most importantly: time cannot be overtaken, only personal experience and "abrasions" will help you understand all the subtleties. Thank you very much to Arkady for the site, this is a huge breath of air for a beginner photographer.

  • Ilya

Thanks for the tips. But what if I only have a fix of 50 1: 4, will it work?

    • Arkady Shapoval

If you try, of course it will work out.

      • anonym

Arkady, thank you very much for your advice. It is not the first year that I have been using your tips and advice. Although I myself am not a beginner in photography "relatively" (about 10 years), I did not dare to shoot weddings, I always refused, now I think to try. Good luck to you, good ADEQUATE customers. You can only envy your patience)))

  • Denis.

    Arkady, good afternoon.
I'm not going to shoot weddings yet, maybe later - for a couple of friends))))

Here we are talking about Tamron 17-50 / 2.8. What do you think, for everyday shooting (family at home, holidays, reporting), this tamron can replace 2 lenses: 18-105 (kit) and 50 / 1.8D?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Will not be able to replace. I do not recommend changing these two lenses to one 17-50.

  • Denis.

Arkady, specify what will not replace?
Separately, I have a 5H kaleinar, and I plan to purchase Helius 81H.
Now I feel a lack of aperture at 18-105, when shooting at angles from 50mm and wider into the room (more often there is not enough lighting) - I have to turn up the iso.

    • Arkady Shapoval

You wrote "What do you think, for everyday shooting (family at home, holidays, reporting) this tamron can replace 2 lenses: 18-105 (kit) and 50 / 1.8D?"
I replied: Tamron cannot replace these two lenses.

  • Denis.

    Thanks for the reply.
Tell me, only for rooms where there is poor lighting (let there be a home feast or a wedding), which fast zoom is best suited for crop?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      17-55 2.8 nikon, 17-35 nikon

  • Denis

    Last question))).
Because 17-55 2.8 are not sold in our region, and to order is even more expensive than its already expensive cost.
From the budget (that is, after Nikon 17-44 2.8) options, which advise?

    • Arkady Shapoval

From inexpensive there are 16-85 vr.

  • Nyurok

and at the first wedding I crippled my device ((it’s good that the pseudo-mirror was Japanese and the entire RK display flew off) so I could continue shooting through the viewfinder)))

  • bob

    Thank you for the article.
Let me make a spelling remark. “Unloved” and “from where” are written together.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thank you for helping to finalize the article. Errors have been fixed.

  • Igor

    Good afternoon Arkady.
On your advice, I am still picking up a flash, but I really wanted to get some advice (or maybe you have a desire to make a small article) on filming children's parties indoors (like a school assembly hall). Maybe there are some "pitfalls", tricks, features?
Their technique is Nikon D3100 with a whale of 18-55 and there will be an external puff.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I rarely rent children's holidays, but I need a good wide angle and the ability to contact with children.

  • Igor

About contact with children, this is inevitable))
But with the technology, the trouble is, that is, is it generally normal to remove what I have?
Or maybe something to buy from not very expensive? What do you recommend?

    • Arkady Shapoval

It’s real to shoot, but difficult. It is very desirable then to finalize the result in the editor.

  • Igor

    thank you clearly.
Still I will try)), for the experience will not be superfluous.

  • Vasil

Arkady Shapoval and what would you recommend - wedding - reportage - partying in a pub - d7000 + 18-105 + sb910 AF-C one point at a time or 3d - for dancers, shutter release priority - set iso manually or set full automatic (can you trust machine) or machine with a maximum threshold of 1600-2000? and about the shutter speed at 18-105 when shooting the launch of pigeons on the street - I put it on S - I wind up the shutter speed 600-1000 - iso on the automatic - shooting mode is continuous - AF-C focusing by 3 d with release priority - flash in the forehead - when too much bright and contrasting and without it - is it okay to set the settings thanks

    • Arkady Shapoval

With a flash, it is better to use manual ISO control, you can set something from the range of 400-800 and shoot for your own pleasure. You can shoot in 3D or in the usual automatic focus mode (green rectangle).

  • Vasil

Arkady still questioned the truth about the flash - he shot at home - on A (my favorite mode) at 18-105 at maximum focal length - for the bokeh effect - shot with a flash - in TTL sb - all the photos have some kind of yellowish tint - I removed the white balance on the camera from a car to a flash - even worse, I made an amendment to the BB car towards blue - it does not help, I just left it on the car and switched to shutter priority S - everything became normal and, in principle, bokeh is present - why is that?

    • Arkady Shapoval

The walls, the picture control mode, the BB is lying, the lens does not give the same colors - these are the main options.

  • Vasil

bb is lying in A - diaph priority? why in other modes ok - the same walls, the same lens, the same bb ???

    • Arkady Shapoval

Because the exposure and flash pulse settings are changed, which leads to a different luminous flux and the intensity of different color channels.

  • Vasil

So when working with a flash, you need to adapt to other options for working, then try everything and decide? with flash - one theory - without - another

    • Arkady Shapoval

The theory is the same, with a flash of nuances more.
