Oh, thanks a lot. At least I got the basics, I hope a friend and a bride will look at the material with pleasant feelings.
It’s hard when the shooting experience at the wedding is zero. I hope everything works out.
But here would be some more tips on how to shoot a video at a wedding, different there are “5 seconds of guests, 10 - of those who are getting married”. These nuances ensure success. Can you tell us about filming? And so pleased, thanks for the advice.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Everything will work out. Video needs dynamics, video processing is much more difficult compared to photos (although how to say), if you also subscribed as a videographer, then it will be really difficult the first time. Good luck, and be sure to write your impressions of the shooting.

  • Sergei

Wide-angle and fast fix is available ...
Instead of a telephoto, it is still 18-105 ...
Do you think you can come up with something? )))
    Was there such an experience?

    • Arkady Shapoval

It’s completely rolling. I did very well in my youth at 18-105 + 50 1.8. The kit is what you need.
The experience was even on a manual shoot :) and more than once :)

  • Of course, this was somehow interested in any photographer - even those who do not plan to take money for their hobby. Accordingly, at an early stage it is always necessary to “listen to senior comrades”, i.e. those Korean photographers who ate more than one dog at weddings.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Therefore, the article did not so much write about the intricacies of shooting, the different currents of light for a bride in a veil, etc., but simply important general things that you don’t even suspect about without experience. :)

  • Igor

Thanks. Great site. He learned a lot of what is needed for himself. To start a career as a wedding photographer, a fix for 50 1,8 is better to add an 18-105 kit or 18-50 kit and is there enough sb700 flash? I understand the commonplace questions, but I don’t want to throw away money in vain; it might be better to dig it up. (Nikon D90).

    • Arkady Shapoval

There are no bad questions. For money spent on 18-105, it is better to take B. at. Tamron 17-50 2.8, I understand that it is more expensive, but 18-105 and 18-55 are not the best option for weddings. Although, personally, I shot weddings and 18-55 and 18-105 the first couple of weddings.

  • Igor

Thank you, very timely advice, then I will unsubscribe after purchase

  • I bought a Tamron 17-50 2.8 with a zoom stub until I have one lens that you think is enough?

    • Arkady Shapoval

The question is not entirely clear whether enough or not enough depends on the needs.

  • everyone thinks that photographing a wedding is easy, I also thought so right away)))
now, too, sometimes my hands hurt on the second day, although he himself is not a hilak.

  • Konstantin

and I dream about this wedding all night
    :)
and hands and back then feel a couple more days tight
Arkady Do you have a wedding assistant or are you attracting a reflector to hold?

    • Arkady Shapoval

It all depends on the order. If a serious order, then with an assistant, there is not only a reflector needed. If simple, then you can recoup on the witness, or some of the guests.

  • Walden

I shoot with a whale 18-55 (I use it as a shirik, 18 - 3.5 hole), 50mm by 1.8, helios 44-7 (58mm, very beautiful bokeh), and Jupiter 200mm (the picture is just gorgeous!) 12MP EOS 1100D carcass. I only shoot in RAW! and everyone is happy)) cheap and angry, in the future I will take mark II.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thank you for sharing your experience)

  • Orward

Arkady, thanks for the article! Everything is very informative.
I would like to ask a few questions about the wedding shooting, namely, about shooting at the registry office:
    1) I have a D7000 with SB-910 flash, I would like to know what kind of autofocus setting (modes, zones, points) do you consider to be optimal during the continuous high-speed shooting mode with an external flash, when young people sign and put on rings? Those. when you need to give everything as much as possible in order to manage to make a lot of shots and not screw up?
    2) What do you do when this crucial moment of painting and putting on the rings comes up, and the flash does not show how much battery power remains? After all, before that you have already shot and it turns out that this is a lottery. How could it be that the charge of batteries or accumulators runs out at the most inopportune moment? What is the best way out?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      1) AF-C single point, shutter priority. If it is dark, AF-S is in release priority mode, as in AF-S the flash can illuminate infrared focus. Just don't be too zealous - you can squeeze out 910 frames with a power of 20/1 with the SB-1 and it will go out for 2-3 minutes due to overheating.
      2) If panic at all, you can shoot without a flash. But seriously, just put fresh batteries before entering the ceremony hall. For example, I have 3-4 pairs with me.

  • Orward

    ps
Yes, I forgot to ask more about the shooting modes of the newlyweds walking through the hall. I tried to shoot at home, but while shooting, I still can’t achieve the proper clarity in serial shooting, there are a lot of fuzzy shots. I ask for advice in which modes it is best to shoot walking people?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      1) tracking autofocus on one point, but the automation may be wrong. In general, if I were you, I would not worry about the registry office - everything is simple there. The most difficult thing is to shoot a wedding walk, where you need to perform art or staged photography.

  • Orward

“One-point AF-C, shutter priority ...” Can't you shoot in aperture priority mode? I always shoot in A mode. And if in shutter priority mode, what is the best shutter speed?

    • Arkady Shapoval

You confuse the priorities of the focusing system and the shutter control modes. Shooting is the easiest priority for aperture.

  • Orward

“AF tracking”, is it in AF-C mode with one center point? If yes, then the camera does not beep in this mode, the focus cursor just jumps and that's it, but there are no signals, you worry a little about it, but suddenly it misses

    • Arkady Shapoval

Beeper is generally a very bad photographer's tone, I advise you to learn to work without him. The focus point is manually selected. I am the abbot recommend my article on FOCUS. Regarding experiences - first try to shoot, as you see fit, with experience, you will more and more feel confident in yourself and the feeling of focusing will come. Perhaps the focusing style in which I work is not suitable for you. Many of my colleagues, in general, shoot on the machine.

  • Orward

“You are confusing the priorities of the focusing system and the shutter control modes.” OK, but where to see if this is so?

    • Arkady Shapoval

In the section on focus and aperture priority, you will find your answer.

  • Orward

"Shutter priority", this is not searched for in the passport for the d7000

    • Arkady Shapoval

Page 91, it clearly indicates the priority of descent and the priority of focus. And page 208 describes how to configure for AF-C and AF-S. Please read the instructions more carefully, also, I already wrote that in my article it is written about focusing https://radojuva.com.ua/2012/05/nikon-autofocus/

  • Orward

Shutter priority is a feature that allows you to take pictures regardless of whether the autofocus has fired or not? Those. roughly speaking, the subject is out of focus and the shutter can still be released

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes everything is correct. Just very often, the camera focused normally, or the DOF is sufficient with the aperture closed, and the camera refuses to release the shutter, and continues to try to focus. Shooting, for example, at a wide angle, the depth of field is very large, and even if the camera is not 100% focused correctly, you can get an excellent result. Therefore, I recommend learning to work with tracking focus. In general, if you do not try, it will be very difficult to imagine how to shoot in this mode.

  • Orward

As far as I understand, do you prefer to shoot in AF-C mode, with single-point AF? As if learning to shoot in this mode, is this the best option?
In addition to 9, 21, 39 points, the camera also has a 3D tracking mode, as far as I understand, at weddings these modes are of little use, will the single-point mode be much more useful?

    • Arkady Shapoval

If you learn to work well with them, then they will be useful. One point is the only way for the camera to pinpoint the subject to focus on. Even if it's a group portrait. However, sometimes you do not have time to move the point to the right place in the viewfinder on the D300, so there I can use other methods of working with the focusing system.

  • Orward

Yes, I noticed, you need to change the points with the joystick, otherwise it may not be buzzing. By the way, what number of focus points do you use in the camera? 11 or 39?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I don’t have a D7000, I’m shooting on D200, D90, D80, sometimes on D300. because the points are either 11 or 51.

  • Orward

The camera is set to AUTO ISO with the parameters:
    - Sensitivity 100
    - Max. sensitivity -1600
    - Max. shutter speed 1/60.
I wanted to ask, maybe 1/60 is a bit much and you need to make the shutter speed shorter? If so, how much?
At the expense of the AUTO ISO threshold, is the normal value for the D7000 1600 or is it already too much?

    • Arkady Shapoval

1600 is normal, about 1 \ 60 read the article how to take pictures with your hands, and everything will become clear.

  • Orward

Question about the flash. Based on your experience, is it worthwhile to use a light-diffusing cap on the puff on wedding shoots that comes with the SB-910?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Depending on the needs and requirements. In the registry office I do not use, I manage the card with a diffuser.

  • Orward

SB-910 also has a diffuser card, let me know, why is it better than this cap?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I didn't say she was better. It is more convenient for me to get it to hide it, but the “cap” needs to be stuffed somewhere else into the wardrobe trunk and taken out from there. The question is efficiency. Well, and their light scattering ability is better. Until you try, you won't know.

  • Orward

“There are only two ways. The first is to open the maximum aperture. The larger the aperture, the faster the shutter speed ... ”This rule works if you shoot without a flash. And if you work with a flash? It remains 1/60 as set in the camera settings. I asked about it, is it enough if you shoot with a flash?
In addition, if you shoot on the street with a puff, then the quick synchronization mode works. The fact is that even with puff, sometimes you get somewhat blurry shots, it turns out that 1/60 is too slow shutter speed? What to do in this case?

    • Arkady Shapoval

In that article, in my opinion, it is written quite clearly that the shutter speed should not be shorter in numerical value, for the focal length. I ask you to fully read that article, otherwise there can be no question of any sensible advice on my part.

  • Orward

How long does your card stick out above the lamp relative to the housing? 2-3 cm, or more / less?

    • Arkady Shapoval

She should stick out the whole length. It is extremely rare to pull out not the entire length. Are you sure that you can take off the wedding with full responsibility?

    • Ada M

I read the questions Orwarda I am shocked if you shoot weddings .., finish at least some courses .. ask Arkady practical questions, And how many cm can I get the card off the puff .. I just almost fell out ... Arkady, you answer so correctly ... I would have I didn't have enough strength for such stupidity ..

  • Orward

No, I’m not sure, and until I’m sure, I won’t go to the wedding

  • Orward

Although, many photographers who have purchased DSLRs do not even know part of what we are talking about and beat in the machines. So everything is relative

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Yes, I see these often)
