Overview of the MS Kaleinar-5N lens

MC Kaleinar-5H is an excellent short telephoto lens with f / 2.8-22 aperture and 100mm focal length. His double meets ARSAT H 100 F2.8 - they are the same lens. After the collapse of the USSR, the optics of the Arsenal plant began to be produced under the brand name “Arsat“. They say that this is a Soviet copy Nikon 2.8 / 100 Series Ebut this is not so, Nikon and Kaleinar have different optical schemes.

Lens MC Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 100 is a legendary lens. MC Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 100 was produced for 'Kiev' cameras with 'H' mount. Now the lens MC Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 100 is very popular lens due to its relative cheapness and high quality of the resulting photos. He is rightfully considered one of the best Soviet portrait lenses.

The current popularity of the MC Kaleinar-5H 2.8 / 100 lens is due to the fact that Nikon cameras have not changed their mount type for more than 50 years. Some of the 'Kiev' cameras have the same mount as Nikon, this allows you to use lenses with the 'H' designation on modern Niko SLR camerasn without any adapters. In more detail about the use of old Soviet lenses in the article about Soviet lenses... For those who want to use the MC Kaleinar-5H 2.8 / 10 on a Canon system, an article about old lenses at canon.

When using the MC Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 100 lens (the letter 'H' in the name means the mount type), there will be no problems with focusing to infinity, as well as with aperture presetting. Once installed on Nikon cameras, the aperture will be at its maximum open position and will only close at the time of shooting - just like with modern Nikon lenses. It is very easy to find out the year of manufacture of a lens - the first two digits in its serial number are responsible for this.

The first thing that catches your eye, but rather in the hands - massiveness of MS Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 10... The lens weighs over 300 grams with its small appearance. MC Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 10 is made in the good old traditions - glass and metal. Actually, my copy is over 20 years old, but the quality remains at the same high level.

Focusing:

The lens has only manual focus. The focus ring is rubberized. When focusing, the trunk of the lens lengthens by about 2 centimeters. The focus ring rotates 270 degrees, so the Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 100 MC has very large stroke of the focus ring. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate. Focusing on the lens is nice enough. The minimum focusing distance is 80 centimeters.

Diaphragm

The lens aperture has only 6 blades - this is one of the strong disadvantages of this lens. The aperture blades are black, the light in the middle of the lens does not reflect back. F / 2.8 maximum allows easy control of DOF and taking photos with blurry background. The aperture can range from F / 2.8 to F / 22. Please note that when using the lens on Nikon cameras, automatic iris control is possible using the aperture ring on the lens, this is due to the fact that the lens is AI-S compatible lens for Nikon. If you use the lens on other cameras, then the usual manual iris control will be available.

I use or used this lens on cameras without any problems Nikon D90, Nikon D40, D80 и D700.

When using the lens on cameras Nikon DX EGF lens will fit 150mm. On cropped cameras, the MC Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 100 is a real telephoto lens. Due to the excellent ratio of focal length and aperture, the MC Kaleinar-5N 2.8/100 lens is perfect for portrait and creative shooting.

I have more here one shot at Kaleinar = 5N in the studio.

Attention!

This lens can work in full automatic aperture control mode through the camera and with confirmation of focus... How to do it - read in my article Dandelion Lushnikova.

Addition to the article:

Recently I got my hands on a Kaleinar-5H lens with an interesting name written through the letter 'C' - 'MC Cbut byjnar-5H 2.8 / 100 '. In the literature, there is an export version with a name through the letter 'K' - Kalejnar-5H (see here) Visually, it is no different from a lens with a name in Cyrillic and looks like this:

The lens has good image quality. First of all, I want to note the excellent sharpness over the entire field of the frame, good contrast, color reproduction. MS Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 100 well tolerates backlight, has no distortion. The vignetting of the lens is minimal, especially when using the lens on cropped cameras.

Beginning photographers can feel the old days with the Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 100 MC and appreciate the importance of each shot they receive, as well as increase their level of dexterity and knowledge of photographing methods and techniques. There is even a joke that a novice photographer usually buys the simplest camera Nikon D40 and one of the Helios-81N or Kaleinar-5N lenses.

    a good site

    This lens is GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (D7000, D200, D3)
Even if you do not have a Dx camera !!!!!!!!

  • Alexander

Kaleinar-5N on the Photo Chip: http://www.fotofishka.ru/index.php?productID=5151 at an affordable price. Not an advertisement.

  • Novel

Found today Kaleinar-5N with M42. Is it folk art or what?
Question: how can this be remade under bayonet H without any special consequences?

    • nashua

FROM THE FACTORY THE LENS WAS DELIVERED

  • Adon

So it’s not clear whether we recommend this lens for beginners to upgrade skill or not?
Will he be better than fifty dollars as a portrait?
Sony A58 camera, there is a whale 18-55 Sam II, minolta AF 50 mm 1,7, Tamron 18-200.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Beginner Beginner strife. As a portrait, it will be definitely better.

      • Adon

        Thank you for your reply!
After the whale, the Minoltovskiy fifty dollars seemed very expressive to me, and the portraits became more interesting because of the bokeh. I would like to try something else, so I’m taking a closer look at Soviet lenses.
I looked at Jupiter-9, maybe it is better?

An adapter from M42 to Sony is already there, though without a chip.
I wonder if autofocus will suggest the correct focus on sharpness?

        • Arkady Shapoval

Normal Jupite-9 will be difficult to find. If you come across a good one, it will also be a good decision. Focus confirmation depends on the chip.

          • Adon

Took Kaleinar-5n. It seems like a good copy. My copy does not have a hood.
Two things help focus without a chip:
            1) Electronic magnifier, focus so slowly, but very accurately.
            2) Focus picking, highlights the contours in red, the area that is in the zone of sharpness.

Unexpectedly for me, a camera with an uncleaned lens allows you to shoot in all modes, A, P, S ... even a green car :) (and I thought that only M would allow).

The adapter slightly backlash, but it’s scary to adjust something between it and the bayonet ring. Maybe someone overcame a similar problem? Or leave as it is, let it play, in principle, the play is less than 1 mm?

        • nashua

For the portrait, this lens is too tight. except for brutal male portraits, especially in b / w Although bokeh is basically acceptable, if you do not cover the diaphragm. For a portrait with a cropped camera, the lens has a large focal length, which is not always convenient.
Jupiter-9 is more interesting in the portrait, but it’s worth looking for old versions that use old glass.
I use kaleinar as a macro lens, using macro rings. For a focal length of 100mm, just a magnificent portrait portrait of a native Nikkor 105 / 2.5

    • nashua

Well Minolta 50 / 1.7 is just a gorgeous lens. On a cropped camera, it is very good for portraits. True, in a large-face portrait, it will give some distortion, but some women even like it. If the model has a small nose, then the short-focus lens gives the face fashionable thinness, swelling of the lips, and enlarged eyes. But some photographers shoot large-face female portraits at 35mm. But here you need both the right light and the “right” model.

  • Nicholas

Maybe someone has this lens in good condition. I would buy it for myself but only in Belarus since I don’t want to get in touch with the mail (I had bitter experience) now I buy optics only from hand to hand I live in Zhlobin, if necessary I can come to Minsk or to any other city in the Gomel region. I looked at these lenses in Ukraine enough and we haven’t found something in the normal state, maybe someone from Ukraine often happens in Belarus and can bring it?

  • anonym

so-so pictures of course came out

  • Vitalik

Guys, firstly thanks for the Labor!
I bought a kaleinar from me D3100 purely for manuals and I would like it to work in the semiautomatic mode (A, focus confirmation) what do I need to do for this? Put a dandelion on it? Or does it not help in conjunction with the 3100?

    • Michael

      Yes, I need a dandelion

    • Adon

To confirm autofocus, you need an adapter with a chip. But it is possible without it, with the help of a magnifying glass or picking Focus.
The buoy mode can be used, I even tried Zelenenkoe auto))

After the Minoltov lenses, Kaleinar seemed more faded in color.

  • Nicholas

Hello. You won’t say why ico 200 is installed in the photo, instead of 100. You can reduce the shutter time.?

    • anonym

Not very clear which photo? Maybe there is a big dd scene, so Iso and set the base

  • Igor, Kiev

Thanks for reviewing and showing the pictures. The lens is very good and is not inferior to modern ones, the “soul” lives in it, just take a closer look in the camera's viewfinder. The lens is old and before use, it is imperative to check the lenses for the presence of plaque (usually a small translucent veil). If there is a parasitic film, clean the lenses in order to avoid scattered (cloudy, low-contrast) images. Then you can enjoy the quality of the pictures. And yet, you need to check the focus of the camera (viewfinder) to get sharp shots with the correct depth of field.

  • Sergei

I got this lens. I use on Sony A7 R2.
Everything is fine, except that when photographing at infinity, there is practically no sharpness at the end. Everything a little closer is in focus. And in good focus. But in general, this means that, for example, I can’t take advantage of a TV set. There may be a problem in the adapter, because it feels like literally half a millimeter does not spin. Therefore, to the respect of the owners two questions. How it shoots to infinity, and is it possible to do something with the adapter (if you have order with sharpness at the end.)
By the way, Jupiter 37A has sharpness (like a telephoto, not just a portrait) at infinity is just perfect.

  • Sergei

Yes, I use all my manual lenses using focus picking. It focuses usually perfectly.

    • Igor

Sergey, Jupiter on sony a7r2, how does it feel? Sharpness, microcontrast? In short, does he pull this matrix?

  • Margaret

Tell me, please, for Sony alpha (e mount) everything, as always: m42 adapter?

    • anonym

Of course not. On it is the Nikon mount.

  • Sergei

If aperture and autofocus, shooting in good lighting is not important, then in terms of quality on a crop, which lens is better, Kaleinar or branded fixes 85 / 1.8?

    • Arkady Shapoval

In general - proprietary fixes, especially on the adjacent diaphragm 2.8

      • Sergei

Thanks! (I think which second lens to buy for 50 / 1.8.)

  • Gennady

Yesterday I bought such a lens in a dandelion version.
From the post office immediately to the nearest park, try it out on the ground. For some reason everything seemed somewhat soapy. Something even saddened. I removed half of the frames at the viewing stage. I saved a part to look at a larger display. It turned out that it washes only on the display of the camera. Filmed with a primitive amateur D5100. Even on the display of the smartphone, everything that remained was quite usable. From fifty meters he took ducks on the water surface, pigeons on the sidewalk - very sharp shots. From twenty meters the fishermen snapped - even the texture of the fabric on the jeans is quite readable. Almost satisfied with the purchase (it was more expensive than we would like).
Absolutely all shooting modes work, including predefined scenarios for shooting food, pets and other blossoms and sunsets.
Decent lens. She would have autofocus and I would have married her. :)

    • Gennady

Gentlemen photographers, who faced this situation? I put the kaleinar on the d5100 on a tripod, take pictures using the remote control, and the jerking when the shutter is released is such that the next frame is no longer in focus and you need to slightly touch the focus ring. On diaphragm 8, this happened.

      • Arkady Shapoval

Kaleinar has a tight jump rope, on many cameras this lens "flinches". But so that the focus is lost - I see for the first time.

      • Dmitry

A similar thing was observed on my Helios 81n, several times I had to disassemble, adjust, reassemble, so the problem was not completely solved.
My advice: shake off this Soviet miracle as soon as possible to some “connoisseur” and buy something like Nikkor 105 2.5

        • Vldislav

105 2.5 times a hundred and fifty more expensive.

          • Rodion

You can take Nikkor E 100 / 2.8 - there was a comparison somewhere, and it is no worse than Kaleinar. Even better. And hardly more expensive.

  • Alexander

Hello! Please tell me what is the mount to the mount on the Kaleinar 5N.
    https://ibb.co/NYZFT76

    • Alexey

It looks like home-made, maybe this home-made ring is screwed onto the M 42/1 mount, but this is not accurate.

    • Alexey

It is also possible that this is the mating part of the bayonet torn out of the camera, then maybe Nikon, but rather M 42, Nikonovsky could have been removed, but M 42 might not have been unscrewed.

      • Alexander

Most likely this is so that the M 42 might not have been unscrewed. How will they bring it to me then we'll try.
        Thank you!

  • Irina

    I need advice
The Kaleinar 5n on the d750 is set to normal, but after the first shutter release the viewfinder darkens very much.
In live view, everything is fine.
When you remove the lens, it seems like you hear the sound of lowering the mirror (but maybe it isn’t). The diaphragm torture does not stick.
With Helios and dandelion everything is in order, everything works and shows as it should, nothing sticks and does not darken.
    What to do

    • Irina

everything turned out to be simple - a slightly protruding limit switch, it was necessary to grind it off.

      • BB

If possible - take a photo to the studio :)

        • Irina

          a photo of what?)

  • George

met such an opinion that on the D610 it is touched by a mirror! ... is that so?

    • Roman

on the D610. there are two kaleinars - nothing hurts

  • Alexander

A couple of weeks ago, I bought a Kalainarchik with F-mount on the occasion. Outwardly, it was in perfect condition, there was a veil on the rear lenses. Washed, cleaned, beauty. I decided to test it, there were Nikon 50 / 1,8 + Linzovanny converter x2, Kalainar and Nikon 80-200 / 2,8 on a sotochku. As expected, Nikon 80-200 / 2,8 in first place in detail and color rendition. Kaleinar is in second place, slightly inferior in detail, the difference is visible at 100% magnification. Kaleinar gave slightly colder colors than in reality. And at the end of nikon 50 / 1,8 + converterx2, detailing is noticeably worse than that of kaleinar and cold colors gave out, far from real colors. Once again, I was convinced that converters are evil. When using Kaleinar, I felt a vibration when the shutter was triggered, very surprised. To work in aperture priority, on my Fuji-5s pro (Nikon D200), I need to stick a piece of plastic on the lens skirt so that it rests against the aperture position lever on the camera. After weighing all the pros and cons, I decided that it would be more interesting for me to use Nikon 105 / 2,5 AI. I hope it will be no worse in detail and color reproduction than its brother. The advantage will not be "recoil" and the ability to work in the priority of the diaphragm without a collective farm.

  • Gennady

Sorry, is it possible to read more about the predefined aperture on this lens?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Here, the automatic iris control (if you use cameras with Nikon F / Kiev N mount). During focusing, the aperture is always open, it closes to the value set using the aperture ring only at the time of shooting. After releasing the shutter, it opens automatically back

  • Vladimir

compared two lenses nikon nikor 105 / 2,5 AI-S (has a little dust behind the front lens unit) and Kaleinar 5H (one might say not used from scratch) checked at infinity 300 meters aperture 8 Kaleinar turned out to be sharper, so think that the second-hand is better nikon or our domestic in excellent condition

    • Rodion

      At F / 8, all cats are gray. Better to compare at F / 2.5-F / 4 then.

    • Alexey

Why shoot infinity with a portrait glass on a clamped aperture? It was not designed for that :) By its intended purpose, this is a beautiful glass, and the fact that the Zonnar (the original version) is more interesting in the picture, but slightly less sharp than the Planar (the later version)

    • anonymous

Why compare the infinity sharpness of portrait lenses with closed apertures? You know a lot about perversions. When comparing these two lenses in Kaleinar: 1) dull color (poor enlightenment) 2) glare-fog-veil, complete impossibility to shoot with side or backlight (poor enlightenment) 3) monstrous mechanical construct (USSR, what can you do) 5) incurable disease in the form of clouding of the last gluing of the lenses (bad glue) 6) a wild spread of the quality of different copies (the USSR is still), their news or old age does not play a role here. Thus, if you choose between J37 and him, maybe it makes sense. Nikon is incomparable. Absolutely. In everything.

      • Rodion

        2) rather a question of blackening
        3) what? have you ever disassembled lenses?
        5) he has only 1 gluing

    • Dmitriy

Come on. Kalainar is NOT sharper. And Kaleinar is very bad in color rendering, not to mention the poor constructive and poor enlightenment, which was applied with a pipette and whitish glue in the gluing of lenses and ... In general, guano

      • B. R. P.

        With a pipette?)

      • Igor N.

        ... "wretched constructive" ...
        Oh well …

  • Zen

The Nikon D750 does not enable movie mode. In the photography mode, everything is ok.
Who will tell you what it is? I thought the problem was in the camera. The service department said that everything was ok with the camera.

  • Alesandr

    Hello !

Does anyone use this lens on a FUji like the XT-3?
Have you encountered a problem focusing at infinity?
I have a version with an M42 shank

    • Arkady Shapoval

Perhaps you have converted it from H to M42 a little crookedly, because the M42-Fuji adapter does not give infinity to Fuji. Perhaps the adapter itself is bad, perhaps they climbed into the lens.

      • Alexander

No, I get a gap there because of the aperture lever ... On the lens
        It doesn't wind up completely

  • Jury

Suitable for macro Nikon 7100 :?

    • Vitalij

I haven’t tried it, but I think that there will be too little depth of field, and this is not good for macro. Although, when how)

      • Novel

        * Canon bashfully removed its EF 100 / 2.8, EF 100 / 2.8L IS USM, RF 100 / 2.8L IS USM from sales, a bunch of other manufacturers with 90 / 2.8 and 105 / 2.8 looked at each other *

        • Vitalij

are they macro? or through rings? Simply, I cringe, the difference in the grip of macro lenses and through the rings of not macro lenses will be. Although I personally did not hold them in my hands, and therefore I am dull with terrible force;)

          • Novel

When focusing on MDF, macro lenses are equivalent to macro rings - the elements move forward, the aperture decreases due to the actual increase in the focal length, and the depth of field decreases. It is necessary to check on the one that is 35 mm, but for 100 mm it is exactly so. The zoom on MDF is about twice.

      • Novel

For a lens to be a good macro lens, it needs several conditions:
        a) small MDF (ruled by macro rings)
        b) good sharpness in general
        c) uniform sharpness across the field and preferably minimal vignette.

In principle, Kaleinar fits these requirements better than many other Soviet manuals.

    • B. R. P.

This is not a macro lens, but with extension tubes or macro fur you can try.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Which lens is sharper, Kaleinar-5H or Jupiter 37A?

    • Andrei

The quality of an old lens (including sharpness) is highly dependent on the condition. Well, different focal lengths must be taken into account.

    • B. R. P.

      Jupiter is sharper.
