Overview of the MS Kaleinar-5N lens

MC Kaleinar-5H is an excellent short telephoto lens with f / 2.8-22 aperture and 100mm focal length. His double meets ARSAT H 100 F2.8 - they are the same lens. After the collapse of the USSR, the optics of the Arsenal plant began to be produced under the brand name “Arsat“. They say that this is a Soviet copy Nikon 2.8 / 100 Series Ebut this is not so, Nikon and Kaleinar have different optical schemes.

Overview of the lens Kaleinar-5N 2.8 100mm

Lens MC Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 100 is a legendary lens. MC Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 100 was produced for 'Kiev' cameras with 'H' mount. Now the lens MC Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 100 is very popular lens due to its relative cheapness and high quality of the resulting photos. He is rightfully considered one of the best Soviet portrait lenses.

The current popularity of the MC Kaleinar-5H 2.8 / 100 lens is due to the fact that Nikon cameras have not changed their mount type for more than 50 years. Some of the 'Kiev' cameras have the same mount as Nikon, this allows you to use lenses with the 'H' designation on modern Niko SLR camerasn without any adapters. In more detail about the use of old Soviet lenses in the article about Soviet lenses... For those who want to use the MC Kaleinar-5H 2.8 / 10 on a Canon system, an article about old lenses at canon.

When using the MC Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 100 lens (the letter 'H' in the name means the mount type), there will be no problems with focusing to infinity, as well as with aperture presetting. Once installed on Nikon cameras, the aperture will be at its maximum open position and will only close at the time of shooting - just like with modern Nikon lenses. It is very easy to find out the year of manufacture of a lens - the first two digits in its serial number are responsible for this.

The first thing that catches your eye, but rather in the hands - massiveness of MS Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 10... The lens weighs over 300 grams with its small appearance. MC Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 10 is made in the good old traditions - glass and metal. Actually, my copy is over 20 years old, but the quality remains at the same high level.

Focusing:

The lens has only manual focus. The focus ring is rubberized. When focusing, the trunk of the lens lengthens by about 2 centimeters. The focus ring rotates 270 degrees, so the Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 100 MC has very large stroke of the focus ring. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate. Focusing on the lens is nice enough. The minimum focusing distance is 80 centimeters.

Diaphragm

The lens aperture has only 6 blades - this is one of the strong disadvantages of this lens. The aperture blades are black, the light in the middle of the lens does not reflect back. F / 2.8 maximum allows easy control of DOF and taking photos with blurry background. The aperture can range from F / 2.8 to F / 22. Please note that when using the lens on Nikon cameras, automatic iris control is possible using the aperture ring on the lens, this is due to the fact that the lens is AI-S compatible lens for Nikon. If you use the lens on other cameras, then the usual manual iris control will be available.

I use or used this lens on cameras without any problems Nikon D90, Nikon D40, D80 и D700.

When using the lens on cameras Nikon DX EGF lens will fit 150mm. On cropped cameras, the MC Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 100 is a real telephoto lens. Due to the excellent ratio of focal length and aperture, the MC Kaleinar-5N 2.8/100 lens is perfect for portrait and creative shooting.

I have more here one shot at Kaleinar = 5N in the studio.

Attention!

This lens can work in full automatic aperture control mode through the camera and with confirmation of focus... How to do it - read in my article Dandelion Lushnikova.

Addition to the article:

Recently I got my hands on a Kaleinar-5H lens with an interesting name written through the letter 'C' - 'MC Cbut byjnar-5H 2.8 / 100 '. In the literature, there is an export version with a name through the letter 'K' - Kalejnar-5H (see here) Visually, it is no different from a lens with a name in Cyrillic and looks like this:

The lens has good image quality. First of all, I want to note the excellent sharpness over the entire field of the frame, good contrast, color reproduction. MS Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 100 well tolerates backlight, has no distortion. The vignetting of the lens is minimal, especially when using the lens on cropped cameras.

Beginning photographers can feel the old days with the Kaleinar-5N 2.8 / 100 MC and appreciate the importance of each shot they receive, as well as increase their level of dexterity and knowledge of photographing methods and techniques. There is even a joke that a novice photographer usually buys the simplest camera Nikon D40 and one of the Helios-81N or Kaleinar-5N lenses.

  • Roma

And how on the D90 to shoot in aperture priority mode on this lens?

    • Embodiment_Dreams

No intervention in any way. The lens is not autofocus (not chip-like), which means that the camera does not know what is dressed on it, because the metering does not work and, accordingly, the camera cannot calculate the required amount of light.
There is an option to attach a Lushnikov dandelion to a lens that will emit a native lens. There is also the option to shoot on cameras Nikon D200, 300, 300s and all full-frame, there is the possibility of metering the current luminous flux.

  • Tell me, will the signal work when focusing? and will he even focus on my D60? And how to control the diaphragm?

    • Embodiment_Dreams

No, there will be no focus signal. Focus on your D60 only in manual mode, to check focusing, you can focus on the green dot in the lower left part of the viewfinder. The aperture must be controlled manually, but when focusing, it remains open and closes to the desired value only when the shutter is released.

  • Anton

I am the owner of this lens, I really like it !!! Since I am a beginner photographer, I very often missed the focus, thanks to you I learned about this green dot, now I can’t get enough of it !!! Thank you))) (taking pictures on nikon d40)

    • Embodiment_Dreams

On the Nikon D40, you can also change (select) one of the three focus points using the joystick, then the focus according to the indicator will be determined by the sharpness at the selected point. By default, this is the center point, but when you need to take an interesting scene, it helps. Point support almost does not "walk" on Kalainar, I myself sometimes use D40 with this glass.

  • Do not tell me where you can buy Kaleinar 5H?

Do you happen to sell a kaleinar?

    • Embodiment_Dreams

Personally, I do not sell my copy, but the site is engaged in Soviet optics and you can purchase this lens by contacting the contacts (in the upper left part of the site).

  • Alexander

    Arkady, thanks for Kaleinar.

The lens is just excellent, and after I have installed Lushnikov's dandelion, I don't take it off the carcass - I can't get enough of it :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

It's my pleasure. If it’s not difficult, share with us your experience of where you ordered a dandelion, how long you waited for delivery, and how easy it is to install it. As far as I understand, does the camera now work in priority of aperture? All the best.

      • Alexander

Everything turned out to be simpler than I expected.
I bought the dandelion in a store on Shota Rustaveli, 8a (Kiev) (fotofond.com.ua). It was beyond my strength to wait for delivery - I drove into the store.
Set on the stencil from the kit, glued with a super torque. I will fix it later with resin.
        Programmed according to the instructions.
I installed Dandelions on Kaleinar 5N 100 / 2,8 and Arsat N 50/2. In an hour, both lenses were ready.
After the upgrade, both lenses support aperture priority functions, aperture control through carcass and shutter priority functions, and therefore all the software modes of the device (Nikon D40).
There is also another interesting option: the photo will be taken only if the subject is in focus, i.e. you can shoot with the shutter button fully pressed and the focus ring rotating. The function can be disabled via the dandelion programming mode.
There are some nuances when shooting at apertures above F / 8 - exposure compensation must be entered. In my case, around +0.5 to +1 EV.
In general: for ridiculous money, I got two lenses with an excellent design and a good operating speed, which can compete with modern lenses.

PS Lenses with a mount type other than F mount will only have aperture priority function.

        • Arkady Shapoval

Thank you for your reply. I will try to write a review about this miracle of post-Soviet thought, I plan to hook it on Jupiter 37a.

  • Sergei

The lens is good, but I probably did not find the most successful one, inside the lens something looks like fog somewhere on the last lens, I think it’s sprayed with MS spray ?, it shoots well in perfect lighting, but there’s nothing the slightest backlight Vityanish solid marriage as you do not try, someone will tell you whether it is possible to do something with these? I will be very grateful

    • Arkady Shapoval

MS is not a sputtering, but an enlightenment; in principle, it cannot crumble, but it can give rise to corrosion. It is difficult to judge what exactly with an instance. It does not hold back light in perfect condition, it gives a white veil, I forgot to indicate in the review. In this regard, Nikkor 100 2.5 AI is better

      • At one time, I performed the calculation of seven-layer interference filters, which were then carefully manufactured at the Institute of Semiconductors of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.
All of them "floated" after about 15 years of lying in a desk drawer at a stable temperature. When working in conditions of large fluctuations in temperature and humidity
MS begins to “crumble” due to differences in the coefficients of linear and volume expansion (as well as refractive indices) of different layers, as a result of which on
surface lenses appear iridescent spots. On some MARUMI filters, which I bought about 10 years ago, they already appeared. That’s why I always, when
it is possible, I give preference to one-layer - incomparably more persistent - enlightenment. When deep blackening the lens barrel inside the lens with a single layer
enlightenment may have less light scattering than an MS lens. My Mir-1A (amber single layer), for example, is noticeably smaller than that of Helios-81H MS,
and for Jupiter-37A with single-layer enlightenment and for Kaleinar-5H MS (1993 version with a rubberized focusing ring, dark brown matte
the diaphragm blades and the blackening of the frame, as deep as that of the Yu-37A) are about the same.

    • Dimark

it is chips from the diaphragm blades ... they are brass,
the usual picture for kaleinar-5n ...
he himself had such a thing ... it was impossible to photograph ...
if I'm not mistaken ... understands from behind - plaque mainly on the middle lens (there are 3 of them in mine)
Strange, but the tears just from “breathing and rubbing with your fingers” did not even clean off the whole film, put the lens back together - everything is OK. but they do not reach the end to clean their hands, and it does not seem to interfere.

      • Dimark

By the way, I’m smart - Canon .. with an adapter (with focus confirmation) everything works with a bang .. and focusing in the manual and froze in the prio. Aperture, and looks beautiful.

  • Sergei

Thanks for the answer, there are two versions (Nikkor 100 2.5 AI) and (Nikon 105mm f / 2.5 AIS), what is the difference between them and which is better?

    • Sergei

      By the way, I found another such Nikon 105mm f / 1.8 AIS http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/ais10518.jpg
Surely the best given triple of lenses?

      • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, this Nikon 105mm f / 1.8 AIS is better at aperture, but in terms of sharpness they are about the same, that this one is at 1.8, that those at 2.5. I didn't shoot AIS on Nikon 105mm f / 1.8, so I can't judge correctly. But if you can get a Nikon 105mm f / 1.8 AIS, take it, you won't regret it.

    • Arkady Shapoval

AI (AUTO INDEXING) and AIS (AUTO INDEXING SHUTTER) are methods of controlling and transferring the aperture number to the camera, you hardly notice the difference on the digit. Both are good.

  • Sergei

Here is my copybook and photo examples https://picasaweb.google.com/fomenkoff777/5#, can you tell me something?

    • Arkady Shapoval

And what do you suggest? Kaleinar is quite enough, I do not see any reason to change to Nikon 105mm f / 2.5 AIS, although Nikon would be better. For adjustment and / or repair, refer to the contacts in the manual optics section.

      • Nikkor is unlikely to be better. K-5H is comparable in quality even with Apo-macro-Elmarit from Lake (there are tests on the Internet).

  • Adrian

Sergei, regarding “The lens is good, but I got a copy probably not the most successful one, inside the lens it looks like fog ...” I can recommend going to the Arsenal warranty workshop (the corner of the building opposite the metro station of the same name) and a master for 50 UAH. will disassemble and wash the lenses. I did this a couple of days ago. A lens bought exactly 20 years ago is as good as new. And the problem was the same - there was gray dirt around the lens circumference.

  • Victor

The quality of the pictures presented here is not outstanding. I could give you my photos taken with a Nikkor18-55mm lens with a NikonD5000 where the quality of the photos is much higher against yours.
Therefore, based on the photos presented here, I see no reason what you admire.
Be all the same, be objective and do not fool people, make a comparison of photographs with a Kaleinar-5H lens and a Nikkor18-55mm lens. If, of course, you have made the correct settings in the camera, and an amateur photographer himself correctly evaluates the work of each lens. Do not get me wrong, I am not I want to belittle or insult.
    Best regards,
    Victor

    • Arkady Shapoval

The purpose of the review is not to show outstanding images on the lens, but the end result of standard tasks. The two lenses you listed have different purposes, therefore their quality can be judged only for certain purposes.
If it doesn't suit you, shoot with the Nikkor 18-55 - it's a great versatile option. Once again, about the comparison, understand correctly - it is categorically incorrect to compare a fixed with a focal length of 100mm and aperture ratio of 2.8 versus the universal 18-55 aperture ratio from 3.5 to 5.6.
If you still want to separately compare the sharpness of lenses or other parameters, this is a separate conversation, but the article clearly states that this is one of the best portrait photographers of those times and here sharpness does not play the first role. Or do you all think that the 20 year old will compete in sharpness with the new ED glass? Better test both lenses on Nikon D700 or any film, and then tell them that the picture is better on Nikkor.
All the best and don't forget to +1, tweet, like.

  • 20- (and 50!) -Year old man CAN - AND STILL HOW! - STRETCH IN SHARPNESS with the new ED glass. GLASS PERFORMANCE, of course, is a condition for the quality of optics, however, it is only NECESSARY, and not at all SUFFICIENT. HELIOS-44 OF THE EARLY 70s, JUPITER-37A and KALEYNAR-5N OF THE LAST ISSUES (with a rubberized focusing ring and deep blackening inside the frame) - I have these - will give odds to many ED-renowned counterparts. To be convinced of this, read the ENGLISH reviews of Soviet optics. It is curious that the MORE THE LATER REVIEW, THE HIGHER ITS RATING. Of course, the HELIOS got lost when they began to do everything they were not lazy about.
I myself am an astrophysicist, a 70-year old man with more than half a century of photography experience.

  • Victor

For Old Man Valentine. The best belief is when the picture will be taken with the same apparatus of the same object but with different lenses, and the reviews are designed to promote this or that product.
    Sincerely, Victor.

  • Tell me where you can buy this lens or from whom someone can sell.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The article has a link to the manual optics section.

  • Vladimir

I want to buy one, but I don’t know if it will be a pleasant addition to the whale 18-55 on the d3000? Aperture-Etozh Strength?))))))))

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, it will be a good addition, but I advise you to start with Helios-81n, it is much cheaper and its picture is also excellent and the aperture ratio is almost a stop bigger)

  • Vladimir

Helios bought-81N, I thought I would get the Soligor 350 5.6 telephoto to the Nikon 3000 not expensive

    • Arkady Shapoval

350 5.6 as a telephoto camera will be more than enough, if you find it - take it.

  • Vladimir

I found it, not expensive (Solidor) I wanted to buy Nikora55-300 4-5,6 but expensive I just want a telephoto

  • stalk

And where in Moscow can you buy this miracle (ms kaleinar-5n 2.8 / 100)?

  • Vlad Dick

My copy is 87 years old, still with an iron focal ring. I had to remove my native hood, because I did not fix it as it should, I put another one, also metal, but screwed onto the front thread, and I do not remove it. Also there were unclear spots on the rear lenses, sorted and cleaned, now everything is in order. I really like the picture of this glass, together with excellent sharpness, the pictures are simply pleasing.

  • Vladimir

I want to buy a Kaleinar from Nikon D40. Tell me more about this green dot with the focus? Thanks in advance.

    • Arkady Shapoval

About the point is written in the Soviet Optics section

  • In general - Kalainars are different: "which are proletarian, which are bourgeois" (see my comment above). The early versions of the Soviet period had a shiny yellow diaphragm and poor internal blackening of the frame, which made it great "catching hares" in the back.

  • keb

I bought a great portrait recently, I’m shooting. Satisfied, I walk around the green dot, I think about Lushnikov’s dandelion. There is another Kaleinar for spare parts as I was told m42. broken lens but body and aperture are ok. I want to clean my own when I haven’t done this, so I’m afraid myself. Tell someone to contact. Thanks. Satisfied with the lens.

    • Arkady Shapoval

You can bring it to the Arsenal itself, there are also masters who seem to be doing it.

  • Sasha

what is the optical system called, who knows the thread?))

  • Anna

please help. I can’t figure out the mounts. I read the article about adapters to kenon and found the NIKON AI ADAPTER TO CANON EOS EF MOUNT WITHOUT FOCUS CONFIRMATION. Is this the same adapter? Or will it not work?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Yes, this should do.

  • Anatoly

Thanks Arkady for the reviews. Yesterday I bought for a ridiculous price (I already realized later) 200 UAH. We made a discount on the scratch on the back of the lens along the edge of the rim. Today I'm testing all day on the D5100, a scratch on the quality does not affect. Really sharp and bright at one time. Super. Helios and Jupiters are next in turn :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Congratulations on a successful purchase.

    • Jury

And I personally will never buy a scratch, even if it does not affect anything. Well, that's me.
