Detailed review of MC HELIOS-81H 2/50 (aka ARSAT H 50mm 1: 2)

MC Helios-81H 2/50

In short

MC Helios-81H 2/50 (or MC Helios-81H 2/50, or Arsat H 50mm 1: 2) - is one of the best standard lenses of Helios family... This lens is most often called a 'fifty-kopeck piece' because of the focal length of 50mm. On full-frame cameras (film and digital cameras with a frame size of 36 x 24 mm) it is standard (in terms of focal lengths and angle of view) and is suitable for everyday use for a wide range of tasks. Helios-81 can also be used as a portrait and creative lens on modern cropped cameras.

In my opinion, Helios-81 earned its popularity due to its compatibility with Nikon digital SLR cameras with Nikon F mount. The bulk of the lenses of the Helios-81 family do not require any adapters and work similarly to the original manual Nikon Nikkor AI / PRE-AI lenses. ...

Also, the popularity of the lens is associated with a special twist of the background, inherent in many lenses of the Helios family, as well as good optical capabilities at a fairly low cost. On average, Helios-81N can be found for $ 30.

Critical: there are many different variants of the lenses of the Helios-81 H / M / AUTOMAT family. If the latest versions are indeed some of the best stock lenses from Helios family, then early versions are the worst... Early versions are easily distinguished by their wide focusing ring and serial number near the front lens. These options have many mechanical problems. Later and better versions have a serial number in small print on the side of the aperture control ring. Here is such a paradox - from the best to the worst is just a step. I strongly advise against messing with these early versions (shown, for example, in the 'Appearance # 3' section). And also by no means do not purchase lenses marked 'AUTOMATIC'... Lenses series Helios-81N AUTOMATIC have a different mount, for which there are no adapters for any cameras (the appearance of lenses HELIOS-81 2/50/53 AUTOMATIC shown here). If something is not very clear, or if you want to be 100% sure that the future purchased lens will please you - ask here in the comments, or contact me according to my personal contacts.

It is difficult to overestimate the creative potential of such fifty dollars. Photo enthusiasts often use it as a portrait lens. Many people just want a fast prime, especially in addition to their stock / kit lens. Aperture F / 2 approx. three steps wider aperture of f / 5.6, which is used in 'dark' kit lenses at the long end. In numerical terms, this means that Helios-81 is approximately 8 times brighterthan, for example, whale Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6Gwhich use a maximum relative aperture of only 50: 1 over a 5.6 mm focal length. The calculation of the difference in the relative aperture (count the aperture) is performed elementarily: (5.6 * 5.6) / (2 * 2) = 7.84, which is rounded to the value '8'.

History

Helios-81 is a descendant of the Helios-65 (HELIOS 65 AUTOMATIC 2/50), which, in turn, is a shortened descendant of the lenses family Helios-44.

The Helios-81 lens family includes many models and their modifications. In general, the development of the line proceeded as follows: Helios-81 AUTOMAT -> Helios-81 M or N -> MC Helios-81 M or N -> MC Helios-81 N -> Arsat H. Each of the modifications has several subversions.

For practical use, the latest versions of MC Helios-81 H (aka 'MC HELIOS 81 H') and Arsat are best suited for which the serial number is indicated in small print on the lens barrel, and not near the front lens.

Different names

Just different names: ARSAT 1: 2 50mm МС ГЕЛИОС-81Н 2/50

Optically, they are the same lens. The difference between lenses with different names lies in different mounting threads or mounts, body rims, enlightenment and age. Many new lenses MS Helios-81Nreleased in Ukraine (after the collapse of the Union) are called Arsat. This review discusses one of the most popular lenses, namely MS Helios-81H 2/50.

View of the Helios-81N MS lens on a Canon camera

View of the Helios-81N MS lens on a Canon EOS camera 350D Digital The lens is mounted using a cheap adapter Nikon mount F - Canon EOS.

As usual, the first thing you feel and pay attention when using the old lens is its weight, the lens is small, very short, it resembles a pancake. The weight of this “pancake” is quite large. The build quality is usual - a lot of metal and glass. The lens has no backlash.

Example photo on MS Helios-81N 2/50

Interesting: 81-H is read not as 81-'ash ', but as 81-'en'. Easy to remember 81-Nikon, as 'H' mount is Nikon F mount (Nikon F mount)

MS Helios 81-N produced at the Arsenal plants in Kiev or Uman in Ukraine. The lens used special lanthanum glasses - super-heavy crowns with high resolution, this allows you to partially get rid of chromatic aberrations.

How to use with modern cameras

Nikon F-mount DSLRs

To use the Nikon MS Helios-81H 2/50 lens on Nikon DSLR cameras just install the lens without any adapters and shoot for your own pleasure without any tangible limitations. Possibility focusing on infinity, as well as semi-automatic iris control... This is due to the fact that MC Helios-81H 2/50 uses the same bayonet mount (mount type) as the native Nikon lenses. All lenses from cameras Kiev-17, Kiev-17m, Kiev-18, Kiev-19 and Kiev-19m, Kiev-20 use the Nikon F mount, the same as that of modern Nikon DSLRs. Some cameras will even have automatic metering exposure. Exact list of cameras that support metering exposure with manual lenses (such as this one) you can see here or here. For more information on how to use manual lenses, see my article. Soviet optics.

Important: although the lenses MC Helios-81N 2/50 have a protrusion for transmitting the aperture value to the camera through the aperture rheostat (copy AI Nikkor Lenses), while the diaphragm skirt may be too long (like PRE-AI Nikkor Lenses) because some Lenses Helios-81 2/50 without additional modification cannot be installed on modern Nikon DSLR cameras. Some can only be installed on a specific list of cameras. To treat such a disease can be very simple - just cut off part of the diaphragm control ring, as shown in the figure by Sergei Elizarov here.

It's important: if you come across a lens that does not sit on your camera and you don’t want to cut it, you can still easily use the lens on any Nikon DSLR with macro rings... MC Helios-81N 2/50 can be easily installed on any Nikon F cameras via Any extension tube for Nikon F-mount cameras... However, this loses the ability to focus to infinity and medium focusing distances.

Important: to immediately find a variant of MC Helios-81H 2/50, which can work on any Nikon F-mount SLR camera, you need to look for lens options with the name MC Helios-81H 2/50 (or MC HELIOS-81H 2/50) and without a serial numbers near the front lens, as well as any lens variants with the modern name ARSAT.

UPDATED

Photographer shared examples of photos on MC Helios-81N 2/50 with readers of Radozhiva Lilia Nemykina:

My experience

I like Helios-81N, with it you can feel the spirit of Soviet lenses, get nice shots and feel like a real manual technician (a photographer who uses manual lenses).

Unfortunately, I must state the fact that in general this fifty kopeck piece loses in many respects to any autofocus similar lens. Helios-81N is very popular, but still, if possible, I recommend using autofocus fifty dollars. Some of them, for example, Nikon 50 / 1.8 AF MKI / II / III (D) (for cameras with a focus motor) or Yongnuo 50 / 1.8 (for any Nikon cameras) are only slightly more expensive than the Helios-81N.

Video review

My video review of the Helios-81 lens family with examples of photos you can see on my Youtube channel, or in the video below:

Results

Latest modifications of Helios 81H - some of the best standard Soviet high-aperture lenses... First of all, Helios 81H is interesting for its twisted bokeh, compact size and low cost. Among the shortcomings, one should single out the difficulty in searching for the “latest” MS modifications and an unblacked diaphragm.

Good day! Please tell me if it makes sense to buy a Nikkor 50 \ 1,8D if there is an Arsat 50 \ 2,0H for a Nikon D90 carcass (for the time being I rent a carcass from a friend, and I plan to buy a Nikon D7000 for the future). And there is Arsat 100 \ 2,8H. What other lenses would you recommend. Thanks.

    • Arkady Shapoval

It makes sense in the Nikkor 50 \ 1,8D if you need autofocus. For what purposes do you need lenses?

  • Vladimir

Home photo, sometimes I take photos on documents (Arsat 100), I want to buy another wide-angle one for landscapes and panoramas.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I recommend looking at the 35mm F1.8G.

  • Vladimir

    Thank you.

  • Natalia

wonderful article! Tell me if it makes sense to buy Helios, if there is already an AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f / 1.8G? Not considering autofocus

    • Arkady Shapoval

There is no point in buying.

    • Denis

I don’t know how fifty dollars Nikon, but I like Helios more than Nikkor 35mm 1.8G

  • Vladimir

Sorry, but do not tell me what kind of lens Helios-81H 2/53 MS is, it is very different from MS G-81n 2/50?

    • Arkady Shapoval

This is the same G-81N, in a slightly different frame.

      • Vladimir

and I can safely take it to my Nikon D5000) get dressed without any problems?

        • Arkady Shapoval

It should be installed without problems, although, as I wrote, sometimes there are different options.

          • Vladimir

I read this, well, thank God in my native city ..) you can try on :) thanks a lot :)

  • Alexander

good day. Tell me on Helius 81 N 2-53 the distance adjustment is spinning a little tight. Is this the way it should or just needs to be developed?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Helius lenses do not exist in nature). In fact, the tight movement of the focus ring means that the lens needs to be disassembled and repaired.

  • Alexander

    I oiled now easier

    • Arkady Shapoval

I'm glad that the problem was solved)

  • Alexander

geleos 81 n. on a nutra lens like silver powder. Do you need to disassemble and clean it or does it not affect the quality? but how to disassemble it then assemble it ???

    • Arkady Shapoval

Better to clean. How to disassemble - can be found on the Internet.

  • Alexander

thanks. we will try to disassemble

  • Lyudmila

    • Arkady Shapoval

Take a look at the manual optics section.

  • Peter

I have 3 Helios 81 N - and I don't like them. When used on Kiev film cameras, I run the risk of getting either a good photo or sucks when using them.
I've been fucking with Kievs and Helios 81 - for a long time. My cameras are in excellent condition, after prophylaxis, the lenses were sorted out and adjusted. Why I don't get a good G-81 N. I tried 5 pieces - I sold 2.
The remaining ones catch hares, give a picture less interesting than, Canon 1.8 50mm, Rokkor-x 1.7 mm. Pentacon auto 1.8 50mm. Zenitar 2 / 50mm.
In general, I am not lucky with the G-81 N.
    Industars 50 and 61l / s MS - I don't have such misses as the G-81 N.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Why did you leave yourself already 3 G-81N?

  • Peter

Why did you leave yourself already 3 G-81N?

    And I have 5 cameras KIEV 20, KIEV-19 M and 3 Kiev 19.
There is Kaleinar 5 and Jupiter 37a on other cameras, the "hole" is closed by the G-81N so that the camera does not swallow dust, because Nikon's plug is more expensive and not put it on Kiev :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Decent answer) thanks for sharing your experience. Recently I came across a G-81N, whose jammed diaphragm ring) So, the G-81N is also not a panacea.

  • terik107

The ARSAT H 1: 2 50mm version came to hand. After the whale Nikkor 18-55 VR DX - the sky and the earth. Excellent glass - I'm in awe of it! Aperture, sharpness, color rendition are the strengths of the glass, the weak ones, perhaps, are manual focus, because. it is difficult to focus and catch a fleeting moment when an object changes its point of dislocation. But all with experience.))) It is difficult to find the right words, only positive emotions, and I and the model from the quality of the photo.))) The glass reveals all the possibilities of the camera and the photographer as well. If you didn’t think about exposure before, now you need do not “heartlessly” press the button on mode A, S, but think about what shutter speed and ISO to set. If the budget is small, then there is probably no better option !!!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thank you for sharing your experience.

  • terik107

I also noticed this feature, when using this lens on my D5000, the burst speed increased from 4 fps to approximately 8 frames. But this is not the maximum, I didn’t hold the shutter button any further. I think this is due to the fact that the camera does not measure the exposure and spends less time processing the frame, thereby not clogging the buffer. Maybe this is just a sound deception and the camera takes a little fewer frames, but it's nice to hold in your hands an “automatic” that catches up with the professional camera in speed)))
    Correct if I am wrong.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Your Nikon D5000 camera is physically unable to squeeze a burst speed of 8 fps. Perhaps you meant exactly the number of frames that fit into the buffer.

  • terik107

    Maybe so.:-)

  • Novel

Arkady, tell me in the stop) on the D5100, take 81M (not far from sale) or not. he will sit on my nikon or not in advance ATP

    • Arkady Shapoval

I wrote about this in the review. May sit, or may not sit)

  • Paul

Good day. I ordered myself Kiev-19 with Helios-81N because of the lens.
There used to be a Nikon-FM with this lens. Then he sold what I regret. Today came Kiev with Helios. The first thing I look at is the inscription in Latin-Helios-81H (there used to be a version with a Cyrillic inscription). I take off the lens .. somehow easier compared to what it was before. then I notice that the focusing ring is not metal with teeth, but rubberized with blunt teeth. structurally somehow a little less chtoli shot down and the move is more slack, not that informative smooth as before. I look at the number-9404379. I think the camera with the lens of '94. Ukrainian is not the USSR. In general, the construct was somewhat upset in comparison with the version of the USSR. The question is, are these late lens options in their optical qualities worse than their predecessor from the country of the Soviets? Unfortunately, I don’t have the numbers to evaluate myself :(

    • Arkady Shapoval

Optical lenses Helios-81N younger are quite normal. As for the assembly, you may have come across a really loose lens from frequent use.

  • Paul

Thanks Arkady for a quick reply. I’ll hold it until the figures appear.

I have a problem with this lens:
the aperture is not adjusted when the lens is screwed to the camera (nikon d5100), but when removed, everything is in order. As I understand it, the case is in the lever on the lens, when it is screwed on, this lever becomes in the position at which the diaphragm is fully open, should there be any solution to this problem?
    Thank you!

This is not a problem, but a principle of work. please read the review more thoughtfully, I mentioned this in the paragraph “use it with modern digital SLR cameras?” Please read this item and everything will become clear to you.

mnu also spins tightly, but as I understood not from the lever on the lens, but from the lever on the camera (below near the depth-of-field button - Nikon D80) I'm thinking of sharpening the edges of the lens in this place. It's just not clear what kind of lever is. With a native lens He does not touch whales at all. Please advise, so as not to rush.
And so the lens is very NRA.

Without an adapter, it will stand on the Nikon D5100?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, it will sit on the camera without any problems. Please, before asking such a comment, read the review, the review clearly states for your D5100 camera in the “Attention! Some lenses Helios-81N ... ”.

Where can I buy it in Odessa?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I can not tell.

mnu also turns the aperture ring tightly when the lens is on the camera, but as I did not smell from the lever on the lens, but from the lever on the camera (at the bottom near the depth of field button - Nikon D80) So I think to sharpen the edges of the lens in this place. It’s just not clear what by the lever. With his native whale lens, he does not touch at all. Just why not push it, advise, please.
And so the lens is very NRA.

Lever for reading lens type. You can just file it.

  • Dima

the rear end of the lens was slightly filed and the aperture ring spins very easily. Now it’s nice to double!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Excellent) I'm glad that the problem was solved

I have a little problem with Helios - 81H 2/50! On my Nikon D3000 it doesn't focus at infinity! If a person stands at a distance of more than 1,5-2 meters, then the picture is all blurry!

Tell me, what could it be???

    • Arkady Shapoval

Most likely, you have a version of the Helios-81 lens with a M42 mounting thread mounted through an M42-Nikon adapter. If this is not so, then the problem is in aligning the lens, and it just needs to be attributed to repair.
