Detailed review of MC HELIOS-81H 2/50 (aka ARSAT H 50mm 1: 2)

MC Helios-81H 2/50

In short

MC Helios-81H 2/50 (or MC Helios-81H 2/50, or Arsat H 50mm 1: 2) - is one of the best standard lenses of Helios family... This lens is most often called a 'fifty-kopeck piece' because of the focal length of 50mm. On full-frame cameras (film and digital cameras with a frame size of 36 x 24 mm) it is standard (in terms of focal lengths and angle of view) and is suitable for everyday use for a wide range of tasks. Helios-81 can also be used as a portrait and creative lens on modern cropped cameras.

In my opinion, Helios-81 earned its popularity due to its compatibility with Nikon digital SLR cameras with Nikon F mount. The bulk of the lenses of the Helios-81 family do not require any adapters and work similarly to the original manual Nikon Nikkor AI / PRE-AI lenses. ...

Also, the popularity of the lens is associated with a special twist of the background, inherent in many lenses of the Helios family, as well as good optical capabilities at a fairly low cost. On average, Helios-81N can be found for $ 30.

Critical: there are many different variants of the lenses of the Helios-81 H / M / AUTOMAT family. If the latest versions are indeed some of the best stock lenses from Helios family, then early versions are the worst... Early versions are easily distinguished by their wide focusing ring and serial number near the front lens. These options have many mechanical problems. Later and better versions have a serial number in small print on the side of the aperture control ring. Here is such a paradox - from the best to the worst is just a step. I strongly advise against messing with these early versions (shown, for example, in the 'Appearance # 3' section). And also by no means do not purchase lenses marked 'AUTOMATIC'... Lenses series Helios-81N AUTOMATIC have a different mount, for which there are no adapters for any cameras (the appearance of lenses HELIOS-81 2/50/53 AUTOMATIC shown here). If something is not very clear, or if you want to be 100% sure that the future purchased lens will please you - ask here in the comments, or contact me according to my personal contacts.

It is difficult to overestimate the creative potential of such fifty dollars. Photo enthusiasts often use it as a portrait lens. Many people just want a fast prime, especially in addition to their stock / kit lens. Aperture F / 2 approx. three steps wider aperture of f / 5.6, which is used in 'dark' kit lenses at the long end. In numerical terms, this means that Helios-81 is approximately 8 times brighterthan, for example, whale Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6Gwhich use a maximum relative aperture of only 50: 1 over a 5.6 mm focal length. The calculation of the difference in the relative aperture (count the aperture) is performed elementarily: (5.6 * 5.6) / (2 * 2) = 7.84, which is rounded to the value '8'.

History

Helios-81 is a descendant of the Helios-65 (HELIOS 65 AUTOMATIC 2/50), which, in turn, is a shortened descendant of the lenses family Helios-44.

The Helios-81 lens family includes many models and their modifications. In general, the development of the line proceeded as follows: Helios-81 AUTOMAT -> Helios-81 M or N -> MC Helios-81 M or N -> MC Helios-81 N -> Arsat H. Each of the modifications has several subversions.

For practical use, the latest versions of MC Helios-81 H (aka 'MC HELIOS 81 H') and Arsat are best suited for which the serial number is indicated in small print on the lens barrel, and not near the front lens.

Different names

Just different names: ARSAT 1: 2 50mm МС ГЕЛИОС-81Н 2/50

Optically, they are the same lens. The difference between lenses with different names lies in different mounting threads or mounts, body rims, enlightenment and age. Many new lenses MS Helios-81Nreleased in Ukraine (after the collapse of the Union) are called Arsat. This review discusses one of the most popular lenses, namely MS Helios-81H 2/50.

View of the Helios-81N MS lens on a Canon camera

View of the Helios-81N MS lens on a Canon EOS camera 350D Digital The lens is mounted using a cheap adapter Nikon mount F - Canon EOS.

As usual, the first thing you feel and pay attention when using the old lens is its weight, the lens is small, very short, it resembles a pancake. The weight of this “pancake” is quite large. The build quality is usual - a lot of metal and glass. The lens has no backlash.

Example photo on MS Helios-81N 2/50

Interesting: 81-H is read not as 81-'ash ', but as 81-'en'. Easy to remember 81-Nikon, as 'H' mount is Nikon F mount (Nikon F mount)

MS Helios 81-N produced at the Arsenal plants in Kiev or Uman in Ukraine. The lens used special lanthanum glasses - super-heavy crowns with high resolution, this allows you to partially get rid of chromatic aberrations.

How to use with modern cameras

Nikon F-mount DSLRs

To use the Nikon MS Helios-81H 2/50 lens on Nikon DSLR cameras just install the lens without any adapters and shoot for your own pleasure without any tangible limitations. Possibility focusing on infinity, as well as semi-automatic iris control... This is due to the fact that MC Helios-81H 2/50 uses the same bayonet mount (mount type) as the native Nikon lenses. All lenses from cameras Kiev-17, Kiev-17m, Kiev-18, Kiev-19 and Kiev-19m, Kiev-20 use the Nikon F mount, the same as that of modern Nikon DSLRs. Some cameras will even have automatic metering exposure. Exact list of cameras that support metering exposure with manual lenses (such as this one) you can see here or here. For more information on how to use manual lenses, see my article. Soviet optics.

Important: although the lenses MC Helios-81N 2/50 have a protrusion for transmitting the aperture value to the camera through the aperture rheostat (copy AI Nikkor Lenses), while the diaphragm skirt may be too long (like PRE-AI Nikkor Lenses) because some Lenses Helios-81 2/50 without additional modification cannot be installed on modern Nikon DSLR cameras. Some can only be installed on a specific list of cameras. To treat such a disease can be very simple - just cut off part of the diaphragm control ring, as shown in the figure by Sergei Elizarov here.

It's important: if you come across a lens that does not sit on your camera and you don’t want to cut it, you can still easily use the lens on any Nikon DSLR with macro rings... MC Helios-81N 2/50 can be easily installed on any Nikon F cameras via Any extension tube for Nikon F-mount cameras... However, this loses the ability to focus to infinity and medium focusing distances.

Important: to immediately find a variant of MC Helios-81H 2/50, which can work on any Nikon F-mount SLR camera, you need to look for lens options with the name MC Helios-81H 2/50 (or MC HELIOS-81H 2/50) and without a serial numbers near the front lens, as well as any lens variants with the modern name ARSAT.

UPDATED

Photographer shared examples of photos on MC Helios-81N 2/50 with readers of Radozhiva Lilia Nemykina:

My experience

I like Helios-81N, with it you can feel the spirit of Soviet lenses, get nice shots and feel like a real manual technician (a photographer who uses manual lenses).

Unfortunately, I must state the fact that in general this fifty kopeck piece loses in many respects to any autofocus similar lens. Helios-81N is very popular, but still, if possible, I recommend using autofocus fifty dollars. Some of them, for example, Nikon 50 / 1.8 AF MKI / II / III (D) (for cameras with a focus motor) or Yongnuo 50 / 1.8 (for any Nikon cameras) are only slightly more expensive than the Helios-81N.

Video review

My video review of the Helios-81 lens family with examples of photos you can see on my Youtube channel, or in the video below:

Results

Latest modifications of Helios 81H - some of the best standard Soviet high-aperture lenses... First of all, Helios 81H is interesting for its twisted bokeh, compact size and low cost. Among the shortcomings, one should single out the difficulty in searching for the “latest” MS modifications and an unblacked diaphragm.

  • Dear commentators, if there is a need to buy original adapters with Lushnikov's Dandelion, please contact me, I am the official representative of Victor in Ukraine, it is enough to type "Dandelion in Ukraine" in any search engine. Victor makes for 3 systems Canon, Nikon, Olympus 4/3 and micro 4/3.

    • But what does he do under SONY advanchiks ???? thanks for the answer

  • Zhenya

With all due respect to the author, the bayonets (mount) from KIEV-15 and KIEV -17. various. The mount from KIEV-15 is not suitable for the mounting of NIKON.
This is a big problem for me, because 4 good lenses from KIEV-15 hang idle. Maybe someone will need? contact 9941624@ukr.net

    1. Helios-81 2/50 automatic (BAYONET FA Kiev 10, FA Kiev 15)
    2. Mir-1 2,8 / 37 automatic (BAYONET FA Kiev 10, FA Kiev 15)

    4. Jupiter-9 2/85 automatic (BAYONET FA Kiev 10, FA Kiev 15)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Edits about Kiev-15 have been made. Perhaps there is a method of installing them on Nikon or Kenon?

  • can be used for macro - changing the backdrop to a threaded one - were previously included but without a diaphragm drive

  • Sergei

Good afternoon! I took such a copy for myself after reading this article. And if honestly I was alarmed, it is not at all sharp ... I still haven't tested it normally, but I'm already rosy ... I compared it with Tamron 17-50 in f.r. 50mm. and of course "heaven and earth". While I will test it and if I don’t like it I will have to sell it.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Old Soviet optics is also famous for its spread in quality. I'm testing MIR-10A in perfect condition, but the picture is completely blurry. Therefore, if during a longer test the lens shows poor image quality, it certainly needs to be repaired or sold.

  • Taras

Arkadiy, say, a kind of gelos would have taken sob, for children, however, on the back portraits and decals of the landscape 81n chi 44m-6? Yakshcho abstracted in the form of FR, emphasis and focus on lack of safety .. (I'm friends with the file)) Dyakuyu.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I would take the G-81N, and I still use it. The next one would be Helios-77-M4. Please note that children in the movement for manual optics need to learn to photograph.

      • Taras

81st in me є, I am even more than pleased with him, and I have already filled my hand with him. It’s just that in the hem, even more richly masterpieces that are crumbling by 44, and from thinking, I’m not playing anything, I’m not playing 81 ... nyogo by 77-2 orders of magnitude more ... More food, see the 3st with a dandelion yuzaєte, why do you have a lot ...?

        • Arkady Shapoval

I installed the dandelion on Kaleinar-5H, I use Helios-81H without dandelion. At the moment I use Nikon D200 together with the camera, on which even matrix exposure metering and EXIF data of aperture and focal length are available. Recently, my girlfriend filmed the christening of the child with Helios-81H without any problems. As for the masterpieces, I personally managed to take a lot of good photos with a whale lens, it all depends on the author of the photos. Helios-81n still captivates a little with aperture control on Nikon.

          • Taras

So, the matrix exponent is cool .. At the display of the control of diaphragms, there is a single moment, which will make you suffer, more importantly, it will bring lower values on the nikors, it will be curved a little more inaccurately, and then it will become as low as 5.6 (approximately). +1,3 then at 5.6 to reach here to 0. I am humbly demonstrating the importance, a great message in the auto diaphragm, as well as constantly needing to turn the file on the ekspokorektsii, hiba very focus on the display ...

            • Arkady Shapoval

I just by “aperture control” meant its automatic closing when the shutter is released and the ability to aim at fully open in semi-automatic mode. In any case, the measurement at 2.0 does not lie, which is very nice.

  • Eugene

Hello! I have a Helios-81m 2/53 lens that doesn’t get on the Nikon D3100. Maybe someone knows the solution, thanks.

    • Arkady Shapoval

how exactly does he not get? maybe he has an M42 thread?

  • Eugene

thanks for the help! It would be better if the thread. It becomes but does not scroll. 2 hours I’m sitting on the Internet - looking for a topic. Here and there the answer slips that you need to file a little, but where exactly
it is not clear ... .. what to do - I do not know

  • Eugene

It becomes but does not scroll, it is not correctly said, it just does not.

  • Julia

    Guys, how to file a Helios-81 2/50 on a Nikon D90 ???

  • Alexander

    Good day to all!
And how does he make friends with the Nikon D5100? Will it be necessary to file something?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Make friends without problems. With all the younger non-powered cameras, there are no problems.

  • Alexander

I decided to take this miracle of Soviet optics. There are 2 suggestions: Helios MS and Arsat N. What advice would you give? As I understand it, helios is older, and Arsat is newer but without enlightenment ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

They are both with enlightenment, they often omit this on Arsat, just as it is by default on modern optics. I would still take old Helios.

  • Sergei

I, Helius 81n, and Kaleinar 5n, on the Nikon D3100 became without question and starred too, but it seems to me that Helius 81n is not too sharp, but in Kiev I hardly used it, there was World 19n, this is the thing, but on Nikone failed to try, stolen back in the early 24s. I tried to file Vega 90b with a native extension ring 12, as if in focus, pretty fast, and it’s convenient to work, the focusing is long, and my built-in blade, I’ll probably refine it, I tried World 0.4b, I have almost new, dark and heavy, nothing interesting I did not see in it. Maybe someone will share about the soap on Helius 26n.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Most likely, it’s just an unsuccessful instance, or it needs adjustment, cleaning.

  • Michael_K

Good day! I use Arsat 50 2Н (I have two of them) on the D3000 and D300 there is no difference in optics,
only minor differences in mechanics. Very satisfied! Bourgeois of such quality is much more expensive than 50.u.
I advise everyone! Yes, I’m looking for Kaleinar 5N.

  • Diana

Good afternoon, I have a Helios 81n question about what kind of adapter you need on the Canon 450D, I really want to shoot with this lens, could you tell me where to get it.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Nikon - Canon EOS adapter required. More details in the article Old Lenses on Canon

  • Irina

Hello! Thank you very much for the information on your site. I would also like to know why on Nikon D 5000 with Helios 81 n the built-in flash does not work for me, the info that the flash is in TTL mode is displayed. Choose a different value or use a lens with a microprocessor, and with an additional flash in automatic mode, everything is ok. Thanks.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The flash on your camera can only work in manual flash control mode. To do this, manually set the flash power in the camera menu. More details in the 3rd paragraph in the article Soviet optics on Nikon.

  • Julia

Will this lens fit the NIkon d3100 without sawing and dandelions?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Tell me please! I found an old Helios 81m - 2/53 lens. What adapter is needed for it so that I can put it on the Canon 60D?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Nikon F - Canon EOS. More details in the article Old Lenses on Canon.

    Hello again.

    A few questions:
Found MS Helios 81H 2/50, judging by the marking it will fit under nikon
I have 2 Nikon D60 and D90, based on the article I read, I realized that
it will install on D60 without problems, but on D90 you need to modify it ...
    right?
And how to make a revision?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Not the fact that it will need to be further developed. First you need to try.

  • Temur

there will not be one that sticks and does not come out?

so if you need to modify it? how to do it?

    • Arkady Shapoval

If the lens does not want to become on the D90, you just do not need to screw it into the bayonet by force, otherwise then do not unscrew it. It is not always possible to identify an ailment, because I do not paint how to do it.

There is Helios 81n. Such a problem - the diaphragm is clamped only to 8. Everything else is in order, the jump rope works. What is the reason, the lens is faulty, and to change it, it needs to be disassembled, or am I misunderstanding something? Maybe there is a pre-compression of the aperture, which I did not find (I hope that))))?
Also, how much do I lose with this lens without 11 and 16 on the aperture. Is he good at them, or not at all?
Thanks in advance for your reply.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Virtually nothing to lose. Most likely, it simply closes the diaphragm. Often this is due to the lubrication of the petals.

Good Time, Here is such a thing as Helios-81 automatic 2/53 about M and H, this is understandable, but this is a miracle, you just can’t put it without a tambourine, can you like all ordinary adapters (39/42)? Although doubtful. with uv. Rostislav.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Almost the machine will not install. You need to run very hard with a tambourine.

  • Rostislav

Arkady Shapoval Thank you. I thought so, but Nadezhda still remained)) By the way, Thank you so much for the Tests reviews! Help a lot! I look forward to Impatience yet!)) For example, Wave 9 or even our relatives)) Thank you)

I want to buy a dandelion on Gilios 81-n for Nikon d3000. I don’t know if it would be more interesting to shoot with it? In principle, I got used to using Helios to catch focus, etc., but you have to play with exposure, but can it be easier with a dandelion?

    • Arkady Shapoval

With dandelion it will be possible to work in automatic metering mode. The picture of the lens will not change.
