MC ZOOM ARSAT M 80-200mm 4.5 Lens Overview

MC ZOOM ARSAT M 80-200mm 4.5 - one of the most massive Soviet televisions... After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Arsenal plant in Kiev continued to produce the Granit-11 lens under the Arsat brand. Granit-11M and ARSAT M 80-200mm 4.5 are one and the same lens.

Please note that there are two versions of the Granite-11 lens. Granite-11N and Granite-11M. The first, Granite-11N, has an N-type bayonet mount, as with Kiev-19 cameras and the like. The N mount is the same as the Nikon mount F, so if you have a Nikon camera, the Granite-11N lens will mount on the camera without adapters. You can see the review MC Granite-11N F4,5 80-200mm (or ZOOM ARSAT H 1: 4.5 80-200mm)

I got the Ukrainian copy of Arsat, on which “Made in Ukraine” is proudly written.

When working in the lens, the first thing that pay attention is its weight, almost a kilogram (950) grams. All made of iron and glass - in the style of old technology. Massiveness inspires confidence, although the quality of the pictures is a little disappointing.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.
  3. CANON M: For cameras with Canon EF-M mount need adapter M42-Canon M, it can be found at this link.
  4. CANON R and RF-S: For cameras with Canon RF mount need adapter M42-Canon R, it can be found at this link.
  5. Nikon 1: For cameras Nikon 1 Series need adapter M42-Nikon 1, you can find it at this link.
  6. Nikon Z: For cameras Nikon Z series (FX/DX) need an adapter M42-Nikon Z, it can be found at this link.
  7. FUJIFILM X: For cameras with mount X need an M42-Fuji X adapter, you can find it at this link.
  8. FUJIFILM GFX: For medium format cameras G-mount need M42-Fuji GFX adapter, you can find it at this link.
  9. SAMSUNG: For cameras with NX mount, you need an M42-Samsung NX adapter, you can find it at this link. There are no adapters for the NX mini camera yet.
  10. PENTAX: For Q-mount cameras, you need an M42-Pentax Q adapter, you can find it at this link.
  11. SIGMA / PANASONIC / LEICA: For cameras with L mount you need an M42-Leica L adapter, you can find it at this link.
  12. LEICA: For cameras with a bayonet mount Leica M need adapter M42-L / M, you can find it at this link.

Personally, I just fixed it with a foil, as shown in the picture below. In this position, you can control the iris in manual mode using the iris ring on the lens.

The main positive points in the lens MC ZOOM ARSAT M 80-200mm 4.5:

1. Weight - weight avoids a lot of jitter, with my camera it gives a normal mass distribution between the camera and the lens. Larger weight is very important for handheld shooting, as the mass of the lens and camera reduces hand shake.

2. Internal Zoom - it is very convenient when you change the focal length, the lens does not extend and does not retract the trunk (as in ordinary zooms). The mechanism moves only inside the tube. Nowadays, the multiplicity of the internal zoom is greatly appreciated.

Sample photo on Arsat 80-200 F4.5

3. Long stroke of the focusing ring - the stroke of the ring reaches about 320 degrees, has a very smooth stroke, a very positive thing for thoughtful shooting. The smooth movement of the focus ring allows you to accurately focus on sharpness.

4. Manual aperture setting - A convenient thing, but to use it, you need to lock the aperture in the pressed mode, as shown in the figures a little higher.

5. MS - multilayer enlightenment, in fact, I still do not feel the virtues, but it gives a nice color to the front lens. In fact, it gives a reflection coefficient of about 0.2, which means that 80% of the light passes to the camera’s matrix, and is not reflected from the lens glasses. Also, MS helps fight back and side light.

6. Constant aperture 4.5 - relatively light telephoto, no need to bother when changing the focal length. Constant aperture for a zoom lens, this is a very important parameter. At 200mm, the F4.5 aperture makes the lens an excellent portrait lens. For example, a lens Nikon 55-200 f / 4-5.6G IF-ED AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor on the same 200mm has aperture 1.6 times less than Arsat.

7. Zoom 2.5 times from 80 to 200mm, a pretty nice side, because it is so popular. When used on a cropped Nikon DX matrix, the viewing angle is obtained as for a 120-300mm lens for 35mm film. More details in the article about crop factor.

The main negative aspects

1. There is no mount under a tripod or monopod.

2. When you change the focal length, the focus is lost - although I personally read in the instructions that it is not lost, most likely this is due to the use of an adapter.

Sample photo on Arsat 80-200 F4.5

Sample photo on Arsat 80-200 F4.5

3. When focusing, the lens lengthens quite a lot and the front lens rotates. This removes all the superiority of internal zoom and interferes with the use of various filters.

4. Large - Hard to fit in my camera bag. It should be noted that the closer the focal length, the farther out the “trunk” protrudes. Once I did not return it to the position of focusing at infinity, and for a long time I wondered why it no longer fits in my photo bag.

Sample photo on Arsat 80-200 F4.5

Sample photo on Arsat 80-200 F4.5

5. Average photo quality - low contrast, afraid of side and back light. Sharpness is rather weak.

6. The number of aperture blades is only 6 pieces, when you change the aperture, it feels like the blades go randomly. Petals metal (white), add extra bunnies.

All sample photos in this review were taken on the MC ZOOM ARSAT M 80-200mm F4.5, released in 1995 and camera Nikon D90.

Bokeh on Arsat 80-200

Bokeh on Arsat 80-200

It is also worth noting that the rear lens remains in place when focusing and zooming, thereby avoiding the effect of a vacuum cleaner on the interior of the chamber. Due to the fact that infinity is lost on the Nikon system when using a lensless adapter, the best use of the lens is in portraits. The lens gives a good picture, removes small skin defects, the main thing is to focus on the eyes, since the depth of field at F4.5 is very small. Also, when shooting, it is advisable to set rich photo mode, since the lens suffers a little yellowness and gives a little contrast. You can read more detailed information. about shooting mode settings.

Conclusions
The Arsat 80-200mm F4,5 is a rather interesting lens in terms of its parameters, but in fact, the sharpness of the picture fails very much, perhaps this is due to this particular instance, but still I would like the best.

  • Denis

as far as I know, the marking in the lenses is “m” - for the thread m42 and “n” for the mount type “n” (Kiev) or “F” (Nikon)

    • Embodiment_Dreams

In my copy, which is described in this article, the marking is exactly M, that is, under the M42 thread, so I had to put the KP-42 \ N adapter to install the lens on a camera with Nikon mount with loss of infinity.
In the description, Granite N is simply described for clarity.

  • Jury

Yes, tempting Granite. I was looking in the market with a focus of 200mm and I got Granite 11 and without any "letters", that is, with a manual diaphragm setting, which is insanely happy. I will use it in conjunction with a Panasonic Lumix DCM G-1 carcass with an M4 / 3 adapter. M 42, apparently, and infinity should work.
QUESTION: To determine the true focal length, you need to multiply by the crop factor ?????

    • Arkady Shapoval

To determine the focal length that corresponds to 35mm film, you really need to multiply by the crop factor. In your case, the equivalent will be well beyond 300mm. But if we speak more correctly, the focal length of the lens will not change, it will simply “cut out” the central region and it will seem that it brings closer closer.

  • Clea Helena

Is there an arsat (not granite) with Nikon mount?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, there is, it is called ZOOM ARSAT H, although Granit N and Arsat are one and the same lens.

  • jekadean

Ah, (ZOOM ARSAT H), does he lose infinity?
if installed without an adapter, on the Nikon D90 /
or does he still need an adapter?)
And what is its optimal price, at the moment,
    in a new state ...
??? Ana him a hood at all ???
    Thanks)…

    • Arkady Shapoval

Arsat N does not lose infinity. For other questions, please contact the contacts in the manual optics section.

  • Lavon

So, Denis measures - marker H - geta nikanaўskaye F, then the side of M42 da Nikana is not a tube.

  • Sergei

    pros:
Internal zoom - it’s very convenient when you change the focal length, the lens does not extend and does not retract the trunk (as in ordinary zooms). The mechanism moves only inside the tube
Cons: You need to pay attention that the closer the focus - the further the "trunk" protrudes. Since I did not return it to infinity, I wondered for a long time why it no longer fits in my photo bag ...
What is that supposed to mean?
Does the trunk still walk or not?

    • Arkady Shapoval

So to understand, with zoom the trunk does not walk, but with focus it walks.

Carcass NIKON D3000. I love to shoot with glass. Jupiter-21M 4/200 is heavy. Tears off the head of the trine. I bought a brand new ZOOM ARSAT H 80-200 1 / 4.5 made in Ukraine and only for 1180 UAH. An excellent portrait photographer and not only. For such a lens, the weight is normal. Velbon holds up confidently on an extremely lightweight trine. With the right choice of lighting and depth of field, the picture gets better volume than kit 50-200, even if in manual mode. Light collects norally. Glass is glass, you just need to tinker and choose the modes. A digital is not a film, you can experiment, and the result is instant, but at home you already choose on your computer. For the pleasure of the shooting process itself! Anyone who trusts only an automaton will not understand this. Good lens - I recommend.

  • Dmitriy

Yes, what are you talking about, the lens is not good, it shoots disgustingly, the quality is worse than on an ikt lens, you need portraits, see Helios 40-2, 44, but there is a much more interesting option Jupiter 135, on the crop it’s almost a telephoto. And this lens is not suitable for them even in soles. And it stands like a cast-iron bridge, the price exceeds 5 kilo rubles, just a waste of money. Once again, I’ll take Jupiter for 1500 and 2000, and be awesome, the kit includes an interchangeable shank for your DSLRs. Dare, I hope my advice will save at least someone from wasting money, and do not believe anyone that this lens is good

    • Arkady Shapoval

You may have used a bad copy.

  • Dmitriy

Well, you look at the photos that are posted here or on other sites, the quality does not correspond to the value, isn't it right, you have experience working with U37 and everything else, and am I not right? And after comparing with the rest of the photos, I realized that my copy was not bad. Although the taste and color ... I just spoke, and then everyone decides for himself what he needs.

P.S. Your tests are very interesting, and they helped me a lot, thank you very much and I'm sorry if I offended you with something

  • Denis

The lens is good as a portrait lens. It is very difficult to catch infinity on Canon. I had to put a paper washer under the outer lens. By the way, the zoom mechanism sometimes strikes the front lens, especially if it is screwed to infinity. Has a very weak aperture jump mechanism. It breaks at the first opportunity. With the leg of the jump rope constantly clamped, the diaphragm blades really want as they want and make eggs on the bokeh. So-so, but the price is not high, they almost don't look a gift horse in the mouth. I repeat once again - how good it is. In short, before buying this lens, you have to spend a very long time playing around with it and looking for jambs. And then you're in luck. It was presented to me by a person who does not know much about the intricacies of this lens. Thanks to him, in general ... But now I have extensive experience with Arsat ...

  • Eugene

I have a Ukrainian copy with a Nikon bayonet mount. I put it on Nikon D600 - there is a black stripe at the bottom of the frame. What is it? I examined: everything is clean, nothing interferes, the lenses are clean. At the same time, other Soviet lenses work perfectly (Helios-81, Mir-24, Mir-20, Jupiter-37A).
Does anyone know what the genesis of such a problem could be?

    • anonym

      maybe the mirror is flying?

  • Igor

Unfortunately fucking. Sharpness is useless. How is a portraiture ?, Jupiter21m is better, but albeit without zoom. Zoom in the legs. It's about a bunch of the above and NIKON D200. Respectfully to the author ..

    • Gor

With respect to you, go to the train ... You have already gotten with your nadrachiv… m for sharpness and Epiter. Happiness is not in sharpness, and as for the zoom, the sharpness is decent as well as the picture quality. I will tell you a secret, kid, people take different lenses for different purposes, and everyone chooses according to their artistic taste. Well, as a photographer you are completely crap, just give you the sharpness.

      • KalekseyG

Not very cultural, but within the meaning

  • Vladislav

My copy is without MS, the sharpness is not the highest but quite acceptable. The lens has a positive property, it does not change the aperture value, at 200 mm the same 4.5. The same vaunted Nikon 55-200 by 200mm has f 5.6. It must be remembered that the ARSAT 80-200 squeezes 300 mm on the crop, and this is also a positive point. Annoying one thing, my copy is a little bit assembled, something is hanging out inside, the gap between the zoom and the diaphragm must be fixed tightly, but for some reason it has three degrees of freedom, it’s not fundamentally but annoying. And so in general, not a bad lens. PS Arkady, the question is certainly off topic, but still, what is joyful ?! Sincerely, Vladislav Ch.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, there are lenses of different quality, as they say, you have to choose one good from the bucket. Joyful - this is my blog :) More joy, more life.

    • Vladimir

And nothing that “the same vaunted Nikon” (or Canon) has excellent optical stabilization, autofocus, and weighs a pound less?

  • Nastya

Please tell me, is this lens suitable for the Nikon D3100?

  • anonym

Damn, what’s talking about, shit is not an objective, if you got it for nothing, you can play but no more, what kind of portraiture is there, a good portraiture is NIKKOR 85 1: 4 and optics worse than a cheap whale should not be seriously considered, in the USSR there are no good zooms was, there were fixes that are very relevant today, but a bad lens is a bad lens, not a good portrait, do not be fooled.

    • x

NIKKOR 85 1: 4 is a modern object, which means optics for numbers, and the Soviet have nothing to harass. They are designed for films and only some brands of lenses support the number. And if you compare the price, then on the diaphragm 11 and in sunny weather you can tolerate.

    • Gor

Great zoom, sharpness and contrast are good. The only downside is that the front part is spinning, you have to suffer with the polar.
And so, the thing is useful, especially for portraits and video shooting, the fact that it does not lose aperture when zooming is just chic for the operator.

And what kind of nonsense is written in the review? It is not made of iron, put a magnet to it and you will understand.

  • Victor

Cool guy Radozhiva. !!!! there is granite for sale for 400 gr. Read ... changed my mind. Thanks. I'm glad that there are professionals without the "Turkey" complex. The turkey knows everything, but just didn't get on this ...
I put an adapter with a dandelion 37 on a canon 42 on Jupiter 650a. And sho ... does not recognize and does not confirm anything ... but on the phone I did not give a word to say. How to subscribe to your reviews ???

  • Vyacheslav

I have Granite-11 without letters after the numbers, produced in 1978, probably this is the very first version of granite. The quality of the pictures is very mediocre, in good weather, you can even more acceptable quality after strong editing, but in low light the quality is so low that the desire to shoot them disappears. Maybe later versions shoot better. Here’s the shot http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/slava76-bww/view/585257?page=0

This is my first TV set I took in Samara in 2003 to my first zenith in my life. fabulously draws. sharpness is colossal and does not deteriorate when zooming. He took delighted clients to work in the park as a portrait portrait. Bunnies, of course, sometimes catches, but a portrait of 60 to 90 is not a problem for mine. Personally, I’m not selling mine for anything! Sincerely, Vladimir.

  • Victor

There was a problem with the skip blocking. In my case, it is not possible to close up the pusher with foil - it is pressed with great effort. Or is the whole secret in epoxy glue?

    • Soot

And a drop of superglue helped me.

Friends, please help, I got Granite-11 without shanks at all,
the size of the shank of this lens with an M42 thread is very necessary,
or maybe someone has an unused threaded shank - maybe I'll help get rid of it.

If the question is still relevant - since you have a lens, you only need the height of the shank (no thread), take the rest of the dimensions from the lens. To measure, I removed the shank from the specified device - height without thread 6,3 mm (measured with a micrometer). I'm not an expert, don't be surprised at this terminology - the thickness of the body through which the mounting screws pass is 2,3 mm (I think this is the most important size).
I still have a copy of the 83rd pusher on the diaphragm, but there is a lever for quickly closing the diaphragm to a preset value (relevant for digital mirrors). The lens hood is retractable as part of the lens.

Good afternoon. Yes, something can be squeezed out from Granite. And who took it apart. Need disassembly technology to lubricate the helicoid. A little taut, I want to change the lubricant. Can I get to the helicoid without disassembling the lens block? Technology is possible here. Dekarto11@mail.ru Thank you all.
