MC ZOOM ARSAT M 80-200mm 4.5 - one of the most massive Soviet televisions... After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Arsenal plant in Kiev continued to produce the Granit-11 lens under the Arsat brand. Granit-11M and ARSAT M 80-200mm 4.5 are one and the same lens.

Please note that there are two versions of the Granite-11 lens. Granite-11N and Granite-11M. The first, Granite-11N, has an N-type bayonet mount, as with Kiev-19 cameras and the like. The N mount is the same as the Nikon mount F, so if you have a Nikon camera, the Granite-11N lens will mount on the camera without adapters. I got the Ukrainian copy of Arsat, on which “Made in Ukraine” is proudly written.

When working in the lens, the first thing that pay attention is its weight, almost a kilogram (950) grams. All made of iron and glass - in the style of old technology. Massiveness inspires confidence, although the quality of the pictures is a little disappointing.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.

1. Weight - weight avoids a lot of jitter, with my camera it gives a normal mass distribution between the camera and the lens. Larger weight is very important for handheld shooting, as the mass of the lens and camera reduces hand shake.

2. Internal Zoom - it is very convenient when you change the focal length, the lens does not extend and does not retract the trunk (as in ordinary zooms). The mechanism moves only inside the tube. Nowadays, the multiplicity of the internal zoom is greatly appreciated.

3. Long stroke of the focusing ring - the stroke of the ring reaches about 320 degrees, has a very smooth stroke, a very positive thing for thoughtful shooting. The smooth movement of the focus ring allows you to accurately focus on sharpness.

4. Manual aperture setting - A convenient thing, but to use it, you need to lock the aperture in the pressed mode, as shown in the figures a little higher.

5. MS - multilayer enlightenment, in fact, I still do not feel the virtues, but it gives a nice color to the front lens. In fact, it gives a reflection coefficient of about 0.2, which means that 80% of the light passes to the camera’s matrix, and is not reflected from the lens glasses. Also, MS helps fight back and side light.

6. Constant aperture 4.5 - relatively light telephoto, no need to bother when changing the focal length. Constant aperture for a zoom lens, this is a very important parameter. At 200mm, the F4.5 aperture makes the lens an excellent portrait lens. For example, a lens Nikon 55-200 f / 4-5.6G IF-ED AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor on the same 200mm has aperture 1.6 times less than Arsat.

The main negative aspects

1. There is no mount under a tripod or monopod.

2. When you change the focal length, the focus is lost - although I personally read in the instructions that it is not lost, most likely this is due to the use of an adapter.

3. When focusing, the lens lengthens quite a lot and the front lens rotates. This removes all the superiority of internal zoom and interferes with the use of various filters.

4. Large - Hard to fit in my camera bag. It should be noted that the closer the focal length, the farther out the “trunk” protrudes. Once I did not return it to the position of focusing at infinity, and for a long time I wondered why it no longer fits in my photo bag.

5. Average photo quality - low contrast, afraid of side and back light. Sharpness is rather weak.

6. The number of aperture blades is only 6 pieces, when you change the aperture, it feels like the blades go randomly. Petals metal (white), add extra bunnies.

The lens gives a good picture, removes small skin defects, the main thing is to focus on the eyes, since the depth of field at F4.5 is very small. Conclusions
The Arsat 80-200mm F4,5 is a rather interesting lens in terms of its parameters, but in fact, the sharpness of the picture fails very much, perhaps this is due to this particular instance, but still I would like the best.

    I had one, bought in the year of the Olympic Games in 1980. The very first I succumbed to the temptation to buy after reading its description in the magazine “Soviet Photo”, I don't remember the number ...
    It was simply called “Granit-11N”. Built-in retractable metal hood, manual locking diaphragm, no multilayer coating (MC).
    At that time, a zoom lens was a rarity, the last squeak of technological achievement of the mechano-optical industry of the USSR.
    When the focal length is changed, the sharpness is not disturbed, it is afraid of backlight, the resolution is mediocre. In a word, nothing outstanding besides the constructive - all from metal. In all honesty, I wouldn’t buy such a lens now, I don’t want to ... even with a surcharge.

    Please help me, I don't understand anything, I clamp the diaphragm pusher, only from the inside. I met a video on YouTube where a guy squeezes it with a small piece from a ballpoint pen. His video clearly shows that everything works. I disassembled it several times, picked up the ring, and nothing happens anyway, the diaphragm does not work in the end.

Due to the adjustment ring, despite the fact that there is only a millimeter of thickness, focusing to infinity is lost. Alas. I just don’t want to buy an extra corrective lens ring yet. There, more often than not, the reviews are not very good, saying that the picture ends up “soaping”.
        Why fact? Because if you just attach a lens, without a ring, focusing at infinity appears.
        It's a pity that you just have to use the lens itself by 50%. I somehow got used to not being able to use a diaphragm, but still, it's better with it than without it. But most of all is over - the impossibility of focusing on infinity ... = (
