Nikon D40 review

I used my first Nikon D40 camera for about 3 years, then I sold it, and a few years later, in 2015 I bought it again. Now I have a lot of practical experience with the Nikon D40, which I share in this review.

Nikon D40 review

Nikon D40 review

The Nikon D40 was introduced on November 16, 2006, and became the fourteenth full-fledged Nikon digital SLR camera. Before its release, the following Nikon D1 cameras already existed, D1h, D1x, D100, D2h, D70, D2x, D2hs, D70s, D50, D200, D2xs, D80 (the list is shown in the order the cameras were released). Nikon D40 has opened a new class of Nikon cameras. Like Nikon D50, Nikon D40 belongs to the line of amateur cameras, but unlike all of the above cameras, the Nikon D40 was taken away from a very important thing - the focusing motor, which is responsible for autofocusing with non-motorized lenses like 'AF'. Thus, all Nikon D40 owners were automatically forced to use more modern and sometimes more expensive lenses such as AF S и AF-I. Many Nikon users cursed the company for taking away the Nikon D40's compatibility with a huge (really very large) fleet of old autofocus optics. On the other hand, the Nikon D40 turned out to be a very cheap camera, which is why it was bought by a huge number of users. Subsequently, Nikon did not pay attention to user complaints and continued the line of cameras, for which it was Nikon D40 that became the basis.

Nikon D40 Camera Setup Display

Nikon D40 Camera Setup Display

This camera is the `` youngest '', the slowest, with the worst focusing system and the simplest camera in the lineup of all digital SLR cameras Nikon... Don't expect stunning performance figures from it. If you need a more serious amateur camera for photography, then you should pay attention to the modern, latest and most 'feature-packed' device in this line - Nikon D5600... The Nikon D40 baby remains just a tool for amateur photographers who don't need modern 'gadgets'.

Compared to more advanced cameras, the Nikon D40 does not have the following important functions:

  • No built-in focus motor
  • There is no front selector for the index finger of the right hand. This makes it difficult to configure many parameters. This selector was first thrown out of Nikon D50.
  • There is no high speed sync function with Nikon external flash units.
  • There is no function to control external flashes in automatic mode using the creative lighting system Nikon CLS.
  • There is no diaphragm rheostat for working with manual optics.
  • There is no way to shoot video.
  • The camera does not know how to shoot panoramas, HDR, there is no time-lapse function, there is no bracketing, there is no function ADL, there is no control of vignetting, chromatic aberration, distortion and a million modern lotions typical of modern cameras.

But Nikon D40 retains the main thing - a large sensor. Physical matrix size (sensor) the Nikon D40 is the same as on modern expensive Nikon DX cameras: Nikon D7100, D7200, D5500, D5300, D3300 etc. One of the key differences between a DSLR and an ordinary digital compact is matrix size. In ideal shooting conditions, the Nikon D40 allows you to get the result on par with any modern Nikon DX camera.

Nikon D40 is Nikon's slowest DSLR camera. Maximum burst speed is only 2.5 frames per second... Its predecessor had the same low burst speed - Nikon D50. But not everything is so bad, if you delve into the characteristics of other cameras, you can find that professional cameras Nikon D300 и D300s also lower their speed to a miserable 2.5 frames per second during shooting with 14 bit color depth in RAW format. And also, if you recall that the top legendary Nikon D3X camera reduces the burst speed to meager 1.8 frames per second while shooting in RAW format with 14 bit color depth, the Nikon D40 doesn’t seem so slow at all.

When shooting at ISO HI1 (equivalent to ISO 3200), the burst speed drops to 1 fps, because the Nikon D40 is still the slowest camera in the entire Nikon DSLR family.

Frame buffer the Nikon D40 is also small and is:

  • 4 frames in RAW format with all disabled advanced settings
  • 3 frames in RAW + JPEG L BASIC format with all advanced settings disabled
  • 8 frames in JPEG, L, FINE format with all advanced settings disabled
  • 12 frames in JPEG, L, NORM format with all advanced settings disabled
  • 18 frames in JPEG, L, BASIC format with all advanced settings disabled
  • 60 frames in JPEG, S, BASIC format with all advanced settings disabled
  • 3 frames in RAW format with all advanced settings enabled
  • 2 frames in RAW + JPEG L BASIC format with all additional settings included
  • 7 frames JPEG, L, FINE with all advanced settings enabled
  • 11 frames JPEG, L, NORM with all advanced settings included
  • 17 frames in JPEG, L, BASIC format with all advanced settings included
  • 59 frames JPEG, S, BASIC with all advanced settings enabled

Please note that the Nikon D40 can only shoot in JPEG L BASIC quality when using RAW + JPEG.

Nikon D40 uses the most primitive Multi-CAM 530 focusing systeminstalled in only 3 cameras: Nikon D40, D40x, D60... In the future, this focusing module was abandoned. Unfortunately, the Nikon D40 has only 3 focusing points, only one center is cruciform. The camera tenaciously holds the subject, but it is quite difficult for it to keep track of moving objects. Also note that the Nikon D40 in focus mode AF-C has focus priority over shutter release priority. This little thing greatly interferes with work and is described by me in a separate article 'Nikon entry-level cameras and focus priority'.

Nikon D40 allows you to manually select only 5 ISO values: 200, 400, 800, 1600, HI (3200) units. Given that the Nikon D40 is the shortest excerpt equals 1/4000 s, sometimes the minimum ISO 200 can play a trick when using high-aperture optics.

Measurement exposure is 420 segment RGB sensor, which is used in a huge number of other cameras (for example, in Nikon D3400, D5100, D90 etc.). But the Nikon D40 froze exposure often carried out with errors, very often the camera likes to overexpose 2/3 steps. I do not know what this may be connected with. Very often you have to make additional adjustments from -0,3 to -1 2/3 steps.

The camera slows down a bit when turning on the display and when corrected exposure (while the display is activated, you can skip the frame).

Helpful advice - Set the programmable button to change the ISO, it will be a little easier to work with the camera. To add charm to the camera, turn off the siren (sound notification), which beeps when focusing. For more set the sharpness and color in the camera to 'Optim. snapshot -> VI '.

And what about Nikon D40x? Nikon D40x was introduced 4 months after the release of Nikon D40. The main difference in D40x there was another sensor for 10 megapixels. The letter 'x' after the name of the Nikon camera just speaks of the increase in the number of pixels on the sensor. In general Nikon D40 and D40x very similar, in something the Nikon D40 is even better than Nikon D40x. All the differences between the Nikon D40 and D40x will find in the Nikon D40x review.

Sample photos without processing

Below is a gallery of shots taken with the Nikon D40 and lens YONGNUO LENS 100mm 1: 2 YN100mm F2N for Nikon. The photos in the gallery below are shown without processing, the conversion of the source RAW files by the original Capture NX-D or ViewNX-I converter or the on-camera JPEG L FINE without any additional adjustments or on-camera JPEG.

Original JPEG photos can be download from this link. Examples of photos on YONGNUO LENS 100mm 1: 2 YN100mm F2N for Nikon with a little processing you can still see in my gallery here.

My experience or what really?

In fact, everything is simple, Nikon D40 is the last camera on the legendary 6-megapixel Sony ICX-453-AQ sensor. A list of all Nikon DSLR cameras and their sensors can be found at this link. Older cameras use the same sensor. Nikon D70, D70s и D50that delight the eye with a nice picture. Older camera Nikon D100 uses a similar matrix, but still different from the one on the Nikon D40. CCD matrices of these old men give a very nice color, for which they are appreciated.

Unlike Nikon D70, D70s, D50 и D100 Nikon D40 camera is the only one that uses a more modern image processor (processor), similar to the processor (processor) in cameras D200, D80, D40x. This processor allows ISO HI1 (ISO 3200 equivalent) and DL function for RAW images (this function was not available on previous models D50, D70, D70s etc.). A list of all the processors used in Nikon cameras can be found at this link.

Working with cameras on old 6-megapixel CCD matrices, I came to the conclusion that on-camera JPEG with Nikon D40 is the most pleasant. The Nikon D40 shots are some of the most enjoyable ones I got right away in on-camera JPEG. Of course, I really love cameras Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro и Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro, but with the Nikon D40, sometimes there are much fewer problems to achieve a good result.

Subjectively - Nikon D40 is my favorite camera... I've had about 5 different Nikon D40s over the years. The last one already has mileage more than 150.000.

Nikon D40 body on the secondary market can be found for 70-100 USD - it is one of the cheapest SLR cameras of all time. For 80-100 USD you can find a pretty super-zoom to it Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-135mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM IF Aspherical or Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED DX SWM IF Aspherical and shoot for your own pleasure. My practice has shown that the cheapest and most functional set is just a bunch of Nikon D40 and Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-135m 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM IF Aspherical.

Low-priced lenses are great for creative shooting. Nikon 35 / 1.8G DX, Nikon 50 / 1.8G, Yongnuo 35 / 2 и Yongnuo 50 / 1.8.

The Nikon D40 is Nikon's simplest DSLR, but its simplicity doesn't stop it from taking good pictures and having simple, straightforward controls. Nikon D40 lacks a huge number of useful functions and capabilities, however, it can handle 90% of standard photo tasks. One of my Nikon D40 cameras has already run over 150.000, the other has 120.000 shots and continues to shoot. Now Nikon D40 is considered morally obsolete, since after its release Nikon released a whole series of similar 'cut-down' cameras: Nikon D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D3300, D3400, D3500, as well as slightly more advanced D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500 и D5600. Now Nikon D40 is of interest to budget enthusiasts who want to join the world of SLR cameras.

Comments: 501, on the topic: Review of Nikon D40

  • Charles

    - Today I could.
    -Oh, congratulations sir!

    • KalekseyG

      the text was distorted

  • Hsien

Friends, help me choose the best universal lens for Nikon D40.
Although I choose a lens, I write in this thread, because it is needed for the D40, and here its specificity affects.
    Among the applicants:
    - Nikon 18-105mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED Nikkor VR AF-S SWM DX IF Aspherical
    - Nikon 18-140mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED Nikkor VR AF-S SWM DX IF Aspherical
    - Nikon 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED Nikkor VR AF-S SWM DX IF Aspherical

(unfortunately, in the reviews of Arcadia the initial release date of the lenses is not always indicated, and this makes it difficult to assess their novelty, which is probably associated with the corresponding improvements).

So, on the one hand, if you knew the date, you could choose the most modern of them, i.e. with improved optics - resolution, etc.

But on the other hand, in the D40, the resolution matrix is very modest, only some 6 megapixels, and a more modern lens with improved optics will probably not have the expected improvement in the quality of the picture obtained with the D40.

So it was interesting to hear opinions on the choice of these lenses for the D40, especially from real life experience.

    • Lynx

      18-140

      • Hsien

Good. But since these are only numbers, without the opinion itself, then the question naturally arises - why exactly 18-140, why is it better than others, for what reasons?

        • Lynx

it is better in the sum of all parameters.
if you want specifics - read the reviews.

          • Hsien

Before asking this question, I read all the reviews about them here, and not only.
And yes, they gave a good idea of these lenses.

But I'm asking something completely different - how exactly did each of them show themselves on the D40?
This is not observed anywhere, so the question arose.

            • Denis

So, on the one hand, if we knew the date, we could choose the most modern of them, i.e. with improved optics - resolution, etc.

There is an answer to this question. Still, you read the reviews inattentively, each of them has a production start date (and an end date)

              • Hsien

Well, I’ll argue, because even if you’re right, it only emphasizes my choice question, which still has no answer, only evasive advice

              • Hsien

I looked through the tables again, and yes, I found the launch date under the “Period” parameter.
So I apologize for the carelessness, and I ask again to return to the original question.

              • Denis

for example, 18-140 has a slightly higher level of chromatic aberration (in this article Arkady was typed up in this word :)), and the D40 cannot correct them when shooting in JPEG (I learned about this from this article). if you shoot in RAW, it’s not essential
18-200 less sharp than the rest
here is a comparison (the matrix for D40 and D70 is the same)
                http://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Compare/Side-by-side/AF-S-DX-VR-Zoom-nikkor-18-200-f-3.5-5.6G-IF-ED-on-Nikon-D70-versus-Nikon-AF-S-DX-NIKKOR-18-140mm-F35-56G-ED-VR-on-Nikon-D70-versus-AF-S-DX-NIKKOR-18-105mm-f-3.5-5.6G-ED-VR-on-Nikon-D70__206_197_1208_197_205_197

              • Hsien

                > here's a comparison (D40 and D70 have the same matrix)
Does this table somehow take into account the matrix?

              • Denis

of course. there you select the model of the camera and see the test results on it

              • Hsien

                > choose a camera model and see the test results on it
Wow! Exactly what you need, thanks!

PS. Now, if she still gave the result immediately in the pictures!
                Just kidding;)

  • Peter Sh.

Senya, go to the market, buy a goose, and fool his head.

You have already been told it is very clear which lens is better.

If you couldn’t understand this from long detailed articles with pictures yourself, then how can we tell you this in ten seconds of the comment format?

    Don’t upset us, Senya!

  • Hsien

Peter Sh., I like to listen to the advice of clever experienced people, weigh, think over, and - in general, do not interfere, please.
There is such a category of people - perfectionists, haven't you heard? And your goose has nothing to do with it, hug him yourself.

    • Valery A.

Here on Wikipedia they write that perfectionism is often a mental clinic.

  • Oleg

I have been using my D40 for 7 years with the nikkor 35mm f / 1.8g prime - my favorite lens, albeit a specific one, and so, an excellent camera, still pleases with the quality of the images, despite the fact that it is outdated! True, the mileage is small, only 3000 frames. I rarely find time for photography, but surprisingly, even the battery is still serviceable and holds a charge normally. So much for a cheap camera.

    • Valery A.

Well, how cheap - at one time it cost about 1000 tanks.

      • Oleg

Well, actually, yes, I bought for $ 600 at the time. By the way, it’s a pity that there are no firmware hacks and it’s a pity that there will be no more, we could add a couple of missing software functions. It is a pity that Nikon's firmware is so encrypted.

  • Hsien

Maybe someone from the owner will tell you how to cope with the high-handed behavior of the three small squares of focusing?
With each frame, the red mark is set on an arbitrary square - sometimes not the left, sometimes the right, sometimes not the central one.

I would like to fix it on the central one and so that it no longer jumps to the neighboring ones.

    • Valery A.

And what have you assigned to the “AF area mode”, not “near. an object"? One zone is needed.

  • Hsien

I checked - just "One zone" and stood.

There is also “Near Object” and “Dynamic Zone Selection”.

  • Andrei

I started with d90, then there were d80, d700, d200, d600 (in that order) and the other day I got d40. Talk about noise I perceive as a desire to embrace the immense, I myself chased them, was a victim of marketing)))
If you are an amateur - why try to shoot in low light? Maybe it's better not to reach the camera at all, if you can't use the flash?
That is the conclusion I came to. D40 in good light (and the camera is needed mainly for holidays and travel) allows you to get a decent result directly in jpeg, the files are lightweight, a 16GB card is enough for more than 3000 shots. For an amateur, I consider the minimum of settings to be a plus, on the contrary, I always have a basic 200, autofocus on the center point does not cause questions, I do not use others.
A boxed kit on ebee with a whale of 18-55 costs about $ 150 with delivery, in my opinion a great option.
But still buy 35 / 1.8G does not hurt)

    • Namesake

I also accidentally bought it today. Suddenly I discovered that he was shooting as well as modern cameras. However, I assumed so. After all, the new ones are better in terms of various lotions. And they shoot all the same. In a blind test, hardly anyone can tell which crop was taken - D90, D7000 or D40.

  • Jury

Good day! There is a desire to purchase the first DSLR. Which advise to take NIKON D40 or CANON 350D (the price is the same)?

  • Jury

    Or maybe NIKON D200 body?

    • Arkady Shapoval

You can, but also look at an inexpensive and functional Canon 450D.

  • anonym

Senya class! If only I would come

  • Sergei

Good day! There is a D40 camera, it is very necessary to get good shots of sports scenes in it indoors. Is there a chance to find the right lens for it, and even with a decent zoom?

    • anonym

      There is

      • Sergei

Super! Can you suggest options? thanks

        • Valery A.

Probably you can't do without a flash, powerful and with TTL mode. And lenses - from the thickness of the wallet - Н.55-200vr, Н.70-300vr, Tamron or Н.70-200 / 2,8vr.

    • lynx

alas, the charming old man D40 is not at all fit for this.
Under your conditions, some kind of crop, from new ones, with the appropriate zoom lens, is best suited.
      As an ideal - Canon 80d, and 7dmark2. Nikon's - d7200 d500.
If weight and size are critical, then Fujik's x-pro2, X-T2. (plus local TV sets 55-210 and 40-150)
      .....
if all this is expensive, then look at the bushy nikon d7100.
      If it is expensive, then Canon's 650d (as well as 700, 750, 760d), 100d.
To look for nikon 70-300 VR (namely the new version with a stub) - the cheapest and most acceptable, or, ideally 80-200, or 70-210. new ones. But this is not cheap.
If the shooting is not from the spot, but "point-blank" then some kind of fast "average zoom" class 16-55 / 2,8, 18-50, 24-70

    • lynx

filming in dark rooms is primarily work at high ISO. And here - the newer the technology and the faster the optics, the better.
Ideally these are zooms with a working aperture of 2,8 (maximum - 4) and a telephoto range. and new cameras, better crop in these conditions, so that their working ISO is not lower than 1600, but better than 3200 at least. plus - fast autofocus.
Ideal - nikon d500. Alternatively, you can take a bush d3s.

  • Sergei

Thanks a lot. I'll think. But tell me, my friends, maybe it makes sense at the price of the top from the list of doctors above for this purpose a new device with a complete lens? The same EOS 7d mark II? Ps Do not throw rotten tomatoes, I am short-sighted in the subject, but I like beautiful pictures

    • Sergei

.. Instead of "doctors" - "take"

    • KalekseyG

Complete, it is whale, does not fit. They are usually short.

  • Alexey

Good day. I just can’t understand what was meant by the phrase:
"The physical size of the sensor (sensor) in Nikon D40 is the same as on modern expensive Nikon DX cameras: Nikon D7100, D7200, D5500, D5300, D3300, etc."
Isn't the crop factor talking about the physical size of the matrix? And does 1.5 crop differ in physical size from each other?

    • Denis

Since Arkady is not so meticulous (in the sense of boring) to measure millimeters, it simply means that the size of the matrix is like that of all other Nikons DX

      • Alexey

        Thank you for your reply!

  • Lion-like

Thank you, author! I love my 40-ku, I'm going to buy for 16.000 D 90 kit (with a handle) ...

  • Lion-like

People how to know the camera mileage?

    • Valery A.

Type in Google “download show exif”, use this program to open the last photo and see the Total Number of Shutter.

  • Andrei

I’ve seriously decided to buy a second camera for my wife, I myself have a D2S, and so the choice fell on the D300, I never had it, so I can’t decide. Gentlemen, tell me pliz, I somehow liked the D40 very much for my picture, the price is now about the same on boo. Does the D60 and D40 differ in the picture? I’m standing at a crossroads, that one was, and 60 even take a dumb

    • Charles

Yes, it is different - the D40 has a better picture, because the pixel is bold.

    • BB

The D60 will be better in many ways.

      • dragon yes not snape

Haha D60 is actually a clone of D40. Toko on a more shitty matrix.

    • Andrei

In short, I didn’t hear a clear answer, I bought a D40 mk, I didn’t have it and many people praised it before. Will arrive, I will unsubscribe what yes how

    • Andrei

Yesterday came a fotik, a small one compared to 300) It works quietly, I would say very quietly. The photo is very good, auto mode works with a bang. I recommend to buy. My copy is in perfect condition with a 10k run, with a card and a bag including a kit, it cost me 6k + 250r delivery from Moscow

  • anonym

Hello, but do not tell me why the flash on the d-40 does not open?

    • KalekseyG

If in the on state, then either to the specialist, or on the mode dial

  • Michael

    Arkady,
You’ve already tried a lot, so please answer me, please,
from the top of my experience.
I want to take for the "soul" Nikon for 6 million. SSD matrix.
    Candidates: D 40, D 50 and D 70C.
    The questions are:
    1. Will the picture with D 40 be noticeably better than that of D 50 or D 70 C
This refers to color and sharpness (and preferably directly from the camera, without big dances with a tambourine)
You wrote that the image processing algorithm in the camera at D 40 is a little better,
    than D 50 and D 70C

    2. I read somewhere that the filter is the thinnest in the D70 S
therefore, she will have the sharpest pictures of all three. Is it so ?
(Similarly, as with Fuji C3, the pro is sharper than Fuji S5 pro)

    I tend to D50 myself - a screwdriver, Russian menu ..
    But will he not lose:
    - by color D40,
    and the sharpness D 70 C?

I would be grateful if those who are in the subject advise the same something sensible.

    • Alexey

I'm a little bit on the topic, so if no one minds ...

Generally. You will not notice the difference in color (compared with the D70), the ephemeral advantage of the D40 in the form of an “improved” algorithm more than covered the presence of a screwdriver in the D50, which significantly expanded the optics park for the latter. Here, for example, is a picture from a screwdriver fifty dollars on an incredibly sunny day:

    • Arkady Shapoval

      1. The question is whether you can notice it. The sharpness of the camera render the same.
      2. Visually, everything will be sharply due to the low pixel density
      3. D50 in on-camera JPEG will be worse than D40, the sharpness will be the same.

The picture immediately at the exit is best for the d40, the reasons are indicated in the review.
Convenience of management of the best at d70.
At d50, the card with a 2GB max capacity pushes me the most.

If there are no screwdriver lenses, I recommend d40. If you have an optics for a screwdriver, I recommend the d70s.

  • Alexey

Filmed on neutral profile. As you can see, the sharpness is fine. You can get soap on a “fat” pixel only if there are additional chromosomes))

  • Alexey

    Crop 1: 1 with forward

  • Michael

    Alexey
Thank you for your prompt and competent response!
    So, do you recommend D 70 C?
(We'll have to put up with the lack of a Russian menu)

    • KalekseyG

D40 is better. Screen. Flash drive. The size. He took and waved his old one from 18-55 to a new one (with less mileage) at 18-105.

    • Alexey

Mikhail chose D50 from two cameras. At a price of 4000 rubles at that time for a whale kit, it was just a gift of fate. The D70 sold twice as expensive without a lens. For my amateur needs, there was no point in throwing at least 4K down the drain.
I use the D50 to this day (if there are several multi-system full-frames).

The user opinion above (about the advantage of the D40) I put in a big question:
      - no screwdriver (very critical for me)
      - three focus points. Not important for the Orthodox who shoot only at the central point, but it seems like the Stone Age is long behind :)
      - some "plasticity" of the body. A double feeling is created: like good pictures, but holding such a camera is not very pleasant.

Summing up the above. If you want comfort - D70s, if the budget is tight - D50. If you don't have old lenses and a lot of shooting experience, the rugged D40 is enough.

      • KalekseyG

And also the orthodox do not like the absence of the central button “Ok” and the impossibility of selecting iso with both hands with adequate values and the upper limit in auto mode. And we were taught to re-frame after focusing in our youth

      • KalekseyG

Summing up the above ... Today I came across your ad on Farrost for the sale of d50, well, what else can I say ... If I like d40, then I'm looking for a second one, but the first one is not sold in any way. Advertising is a sales engine.

  • Michael

    Alex, thank you again!
Everything is very sensible, laid out on the shelves, and, most importantly, with arguments!
And the presence of a screwdriver is very critical for me.
    Good luck to you !

  • Michael

Arkady, thank you so much for the answer, for the site and your work.
And taking this opportunity, I want to ask:
    - Why don't you have some kind of article or thread about monitors for our case?
I recently changed the monitor, searched for applicants, looked at you, but nothing ..
But the quality of the monitor is very important.
(Maybe I'm wrong, and there is such a separate branch - then poke my nose ..)

    • Arkady Shapoval

There is no branch, but it really is very, very important.

  • Michael

    Then let's hope
what are you going to do with time
    and open such a branch.
